I have a phone that has a busted camera button, and I was wondering if there's another way (like going into download mode holding 1 and the power button when booting) to access the CWM recovery once I "softflash" it through Odin. I tried going into adb shell and su-ing, only to realize that that would only apply to a ready-rooted phone. Any help is much appreciated.
I've not tried myself, but have you tried adb from a computer without su? Just "adb reboot recovery"?

Yes, I did. It takes me straight to the stock recovery. Unfortunately, I can't do much of anything in there as I get error messages when I try to install roms, for example.

Okay, so I am coming from an HTC phone where you would flash this (*.img) in Hboot. As this is my first Samsung phone, how do I flash this recovery?
Thanks, in advance.
Same issue here. How do we go about flashing this onto the phone? - Im assuming this is done through ODIN (Using the "Flash" Boot Option) - or am I wrong? Also, the new Recovery is not showing up in CWM APP.

Do you HAVE a recovery? If nothing is working, I sure hope you have ADB because that's all I can think of.
connect your phone to your PC
open the command prompt (anywhere is fine, you're not moving files)
run [adb devices]
check for your device. (make sure your phone has "USB Debugging" checked)
run [adb reboot recovery]
That WILL reboot the phone into recovery. If it doesn't, then my only guess will be to flash a recovery into your phone. You can actually try doing that now before ADB, if you want.

Just do the Odin method sso you have access to everything. Testy me this phone is super easy to root and install recovery as opposed to other phones where adb is required. The guides in either general or the dev section are aupdated and will work nicely. 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 will both worl

Use the Odin method. I also came from the mt4g, in comparison, this is WAY easier to root. Welcome to the sgs2!
sent from the white unicorn.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
here you go,
make sure you have the drivers downloaded.
Remembering you from the MT4g way back when.... i would just install CWM and then flash a ROM which will give you root.
so...
1.install drivers..
2.DOWNLOAD MODE: Hold +/- and plug in the phone (let it install whatever is necessary)
3.run ODIN
4.put in the recovery tar in PDA
5.Click START
this should be fairly quick flash like a couple seconds, minutes top,.. there should be a quick green progress bar
troubleshooting:
there are times when nothing happens when you click start.. it says initializing and stuff.. don't worry! restart the process but try a different USB port... you can leave it in ODIN/DOWNLOAD mode and try different ports but you should restart the odin APP
now you need to disconnect from the computer to get into CWM recovery
to get into CWM hold +/- and power
NOTE: +/- Power also gets into download mode when you're connected to a computer
so its a universal sequence but depending if you're connected or not.
good luck
Coming from the G2x much simpler.

im guessing you ignored everything i said lol.
i guess you're gonna stick with stock since you're trying to flash superuser?
always wipe both caches when trying to install a zip.
every ROM comes rooted, so yeah. once you install CWM just flash a ROM and you're good... you can flash the stock deodexed ROM too if you want to stay stock.

Looks like you will have to odin back to stock, and reroot then. Looks like you got the MIUI that had the nuked recovery... there is a newer one i thought that had fixed this issue. If you need a tutorial on how to go back to stock you can find that here : Unroot/Unbrick Epic 4g
You can also re-flash recovery via fastboot flasher.Or just try reinstalling recovery the usal way via adb.

Where will he get a copy of the MTD Recovery to flash?
OP, what ROM did you go back to? Did you do this by restoring a nandroid? It looks like to get back to MTD Recovery you will need to Odin back to stock with repartition checked then move forward from there since you can't get into CWM. You can try ROM Manager before you go that route, set it for manual flash override, Epic-MTD and clockwork 3.x.x.x and see if it will get you into cwm. If not Odin is the way to go.

No you cant, there isnt an MTD clockwork mod that you can flash... and you dont use ADB on this phone for recovery... its Odin. Otherwise if he reflashed the Recovery through odin he would brick his phone.
And the moderator beats me to it

I just realized that you won't be able to remove those files without root. You should first check whether you have the files or not. If you don't, then I'm not sure what's going on.
If you do, you need to uncheck the box in Odin to reboot your phone when you flash the custom recovery. When the Odin flash is done, pull the battery, put it back in, then boot into recovery by holding Vol Up, Home, and Power until you see the little blue text. That should get you into custom recovery. From there you can flash su and Superuser.
At this point you have a choice. You can reboot, but it will replace your recovery with stock. You'll still have root though. You'll need to remove the files and reflash a custom root either with Odin, the dd method, or using ROM Manager or GooManager.
The other choice is to use adb while you're booted into the custom recovery and remove the files before you reboot.

Did you try to root with the toolkit then you install a custom recovery and finally you install busy box. Still with the toolkit

NVM you dont have root i misread your post....You could use odin to flash lg1 with root injected and then use rootkeeper app to preserve root then take the update to lh9 thats what i did. Gunnyman wrote a post about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895100

If you do flash LG1, be sure to do a factory reset in recovery before you boot to LG1 or you'll get errors from android.process.acore. If you do this with stock recovery, you'll lose all the picture, sound, and video files you have on the internal storage.
