I've rooted my stock DHD with VisionaryPlus and installed ClockWorkMod with ROM Manager.
When I try to boot into recovery, I get a red triangle with a ! inside, and the only thing I can do then is physically remove the battery.
The phone works fine otherwise, but I need to solve this problem if I'm ever going to back up my ROM or flash a new one. Can anyone help?
SOLVED: hadn't done s-off.
Probably the clockwork recovery is broken.. try flashing again i guess..
Thats stock recovery, after you root, you need to s-off before you can flash cwm......

Solved, thanks! I'm now fully backed up and running MIUI.

Are you fully rooted with s-off?
What steps did you take to install it?
What errors showed, if any?

i have s-on but unlocked it with htc's unlock bootloader. how do i get s-off?
You can't get s-off yet with that method, we still need to figure it out.
To flash a kernel, pull the boot.img from the zip you want to flash, and use fastboot mode and 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' to flash the kernel.

hey nipqer,
hey guys,
I'm a noob and whatI wanted to do is having root,
i've succeeded with the htc official boot unlocker (didn't knew it was that crappy)
and using supertool (with zergrush exploit method)
now that i'm less of a noob , I 've found out that I don't have s-off
so you are 100% positive when you're saying it's not possible to have it?
is it the reason why when I want to save my current rom in rom manager it shows me a red !
and tells me: “e:can't open /cache/recovery/command”?
I want to install a new kernel for overclocking, do you confirm that what you are saying is the only method for my situation?
"to flash a kernel, pull the boot.img from the zip you want to flash, and use fastboot mode and 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' to flash the kernel."
thanks a lot.
The red triangle with ! is the stock recovery.
The htcdev method keeps recovery and boot locked, unless you flash it via fastboot.
So pulling a boot.img and 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' is the only way
(though I have heard of someone working on a recovery to defeat protection, no idea how its coming along though)
-Nipqer
thanks a lot for your answer, so that's why I can't save with rom manager right?
another question before I flash my boot.img, because i want to be sure and I didn't found a clear answer yet..
can I get a boot.img extracted from any rom for Desire z ,i'm thinking about a virtuous unity for exemple...
will that work or do I have to get a special kernel?
do I risk a brick flashing that way?
thanks
Yeah that's why rom manager won't flash a recovery.
I really advise you to use the kernel that came with the rom.
Though most aosp kernels will work with other aosp roms, and same with sense (doubt sense 2 will work with sense 3.x and such like)
Also, you may have to replace certain files in the rom for everything to work (wifi, camera, etc)
There is no brick risk
-Nipqer
ok thanks
so you advice that I dont flash the kernel at all?
what I understand is that it's way too different from the original Rom, right?
I've got a couple more questions for you if you don't mind
what if it's from a ROM that's close to sense, like the VIRTUOUS SENSE ?
and is it possible to save my kernel as a backup or not ?
it's really a pain in the ass as I only want to overclock my DZ a bit...
And I really hope someone finds a solution for that S-ON problem with the official HTC unlocker...
thanks a lot again!
Well instead of flashing just a new kernel and staying on stock rom, I'd say change the whole rom.
Virtuous Sense is just an optimized stock rom, it is real nice if you want to stay as close to stock as possible.
Though the kernel should work, if you don't want to change rom.
As for backing up your kernel, you should be able to backup boot in recovery. It's just reflashing it which is a bit of an issue.
I'm pretty sure the next version of 4ext recovery will have a feature to allow boot.img to be flashed from recovery.
how do you mean, s-on problem? If you want to get s-off you can relock your bootloader, downgrade and run gfree
-Nipqer
ok then ,I have to agree on a whole new rom as well as it makes a lot more sense.
thing is ,for some reason I'd like to backup and be able to restore my original kernel, I like the idea of coming back to stock, so I guess I will wait for 4ext.
stupid question: is it possible to have several recoveries?
I mean I already have clockworkmod recovery.
I'm talking about the lack of S-OFF for the HTC official method (it was easy but it sucks) maybe I will find some time to apply the XDA method some day...downgrades kept me from doing it(yeah I know ,I'm not the same to feel that stupid
thanks
When you downgrade its only to exploit a loophole to let you permenently root your phone. Once rooted you will then be able to upgrade to many roms, all of which will be an upgrade. As for two recoveries not at the same time but you can always change to 4ext or what have you
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
ok thanks for the reply...
for the recovery,it seems that with the 4ext updater tool even if I install a recovery from there, it's still clockworkmod...there is also 2 versions with newer recoveries for the pro one??
gonna flash it manually...

well ,I just flashed the boot.img alone form virtuous sense,It's nice because I have overclocking now
what isn't that nice is that it seems that the Wifi doesn't work any more...any idea?
A full wipe and reflash may cure your wifi problem
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
thanks a lot, thing is I flashed the kernel only,so i guess it only works with a full rom install
I would have loved to find a kernel that's close to sense 2.1 with overclock...
The kernel may not fully be compatible with your rom, maybe try a similar custom rom with the kernel supported by the dev or try a diffrent kernel to flash over existing rom
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Sorry about the little bit of offtopic, but I think it will be alright if I ask it here...
So, how do you flash kernel? Is it just a .zip file that can be flashed from recovery (I have S-OFF)? And will that erase all my apps and data if I already use custom ROM?
Hi guys.
Hoping you can help me.
I rooted my DHD some time ago, with help from this forum, and was running the RCmix3D rom.
Well I have upgraded to an HTC One X, and a friend would like to buy my DHD, so. I thought I’d factory reset the phone.
Before I did that though I did a nandroid backup through CWM recovery.
After the nandroid backup, I rebooted into the ROM, factory reset the phone, however it then just booted through the White HTC screen into a black screen with the word ‘android’ in the middle.
Now, I didn’t panic, and I left the black screen for a while, but it didn’t change for ages.
So I pulled the battery, went back into CWM Recovery, and tried to restore, however, the restore didn’t take!
So I thought I’d just download another ROM, and flash that, but THAT hasn’t worked!!!
So I’m stuck without a backup and without a ROM,
I got the DHD on day of release so I guess it had Froyo on it!
Can I just download an RUU for this device and run that or are there additional steps that I would need to perform before that?
Thank you in advance.
Greg.

Greg, Factory reset only works when you are stock. As you were running a custom rom, you have just deleted the rom from your phone. You will need to flash a RUU to revert it to stock.
I don't actually know why you couldm´t flash a custom rom, but it should work as long as you are S-OFF.

Yes, you have two choices, or do it in the PD98IMG.zip way or flash it in fastboot. If you are S-OFF, you can flash any RUU, but I suggest and unbranded one. Don't flash a Froyo RUU or you will be in troubles.
On how to flash a RUU from fastboot, check the guide in my signature....:good:
Ok dude. I hear you.

If you are using a Gingerbread hboot and flash a froyo RUU then your hboot will work in super slow motion and might take half an hour to boot. And belive me fixing that is not easy nor fun...
Were you able to flash a ruu??

Hey dude.
Another few questions,
1) How do I know if I am using a GB hboot? Would a new hboot have been written when the GB OTA update came?
2) How can I tell whuch RUU is a GB RUU without the name being in the title of the RUU?
I.e. RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed.zip

Oh, and I think I have found out why I can't flash a different ROM like ARHD, I'm using CWM recovery, the instructions for ARHD state that you are only to use EXT4 recovery.

I really don't understand in all of that, but I just went through a very long process of rooting my phone etc.
and one of the million things I stumbled upon was this time I flashed a rom using CWM and the rom was corrupted..
I was thankful that CWM had the option to connect the phone via usb storage, [hard drive thing, so you could transfer files from comp to dhd]
So I just downloaded the rom again and placed it on the phone and flashed it using CWM.
I guess it might help you since you have CWM [and if you have CWM I guess you're rooted?] so you might try flashing a non-stock rom.
But I'm not deep into this stuff and don't really know, so you can try but I'm not sure it'll work.

First you need to flash the froyo radio thru hboot, and then a custom recovery if you already went to stock. Then flash the s-on patch thru recobery, then do the latest ruu thru hboot. That will leave you s-on and fully stock.
can you give me a url for a radio only hboot type zip?
the phone is running ics plus and is s-off.
the hboot & radio is ics the rom is ICS+,
recovery is CWM.
a lot of the very old radios and other custom things were on
mediafire and unreachable. The referenced threads return
404 errors.
I should then hboot flash that, then fastboot flash cwm to recovery
flash the s-on.zip, then flash the s-on zip.then flash the final full
ruu zip in hboot to reset to a stock version that VZW wont give
me headaches over..the last official ICS ruu zip should be fine.
I'm guessing if I can find an RUU zip for ICS, that flashing the
s-on.zip in recovery, then flashing the ICS RUU zip (PB31IMG.zip)
in hboot, should leave the phone s-on, locked, stock ICS everything,
which VZW should be happy with since the RMA issue is hardware
related.
I don't know where to find that (ICS RUU zip) either though

Looks like froyo. Here is exactly what you need to do.
Flash the froyo radio http://dinc.does-it.net/Radios/2.15.00.07.28/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot.
Then flash cwm http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot.
Then enter recovery and flash this s-on patch http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip.
Then flash the latest ruu we have 4.08.605.15 http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot.
Then you will be s-on, unrooted, and complete stock.

No there is no ruu for 605.19 yet. Use to be a guy named football who use to get us all of our ruu's, but i think he moved on or can no longer get them.
You can try taking this update file http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Image...WE_4.08.605.19-4.08.605.15_release_305224.zip, renaming it update.zip and placing it in your sdcard in no folders. Then boot to hboot, it might find the file and say update gift and install it.
If it dosent find it select recovery, then hold vol up and power till a menu appears. Then select install update.zip.
If that still dosent work you may need to do a factory reset from hboot first, and then try again right after with the update.zip

hello guys, I have a serious problem with my device and need your help to sort out the issue.
I have some previous experience in rooting, changing various ROM's in Motorola devices but i am a noob in HTC devices.
I unlocked my boot loader from HTC Dev.
Installed CMW recovery,
took a back up,
and flashed a new ROM.
After flashing my device, it is struck at the boot screen.
I tried to flash another ROM and the same thing repeats,
after that i tried to trouble shoot and then discovered that i did not root the device before flashing and just followed the steps to flash the ROM.
I want to know ,
1. Did i hard brick my device? the Phone boots up, i am able to enter in to recovery mode, flash a new ROM etc.. But that also stops at the boot screen.
2. I tried to recover from the CMW backup, but it shows some error message and unable to recover. i tried all the ways by clearing cache, dalvik memory and every thing, but could not recover.
This is my problem guys,
I know that i made a big mistake, but still i want to know whether there is a way for me to get my device back..:victory:
Please help me regarding this.:good:
I have found many threads that decribe the process for a rooted mobile. But could not find any problem similar to me. Please excuse me if i posted a repeated question.
Please find me a way out..!!!!
Thanks in advance for your valuable suggestions and your valuable time that you have spent on me. :good::victory::victory::highfive::highfive:
Hi
I think there is a way to install a rom with without root. Thats the one u are doing.
It does involves unlocking bootloader, getting cwm recovery, flashing new rom but it seems u have made a mistake somewhere.
Heavy_Metal_man is expert in these situations. Hope he might help you.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda app-developers app
running a ruu might take you out of this situation. As said above heavy_metal_man is the one you can count on.
Actually the thing you did wrong is that you didn't flash boot.img after flashing the ROM. That's a vital step if tyou have unlocked through HTCdev. Nothing related to root. Even if you flash an unrooted ROM, you can always go back to recovery and flash another one. You've just forgotten to flash boot.img. You need to do the same thing if you restore a backup also.

Exactly right this phone since it had already gained s-off for most of its users before htcdev was even out we never saw a recovery with htcdum-lock or smartflash like more modern phones got. all you have got to do is flash the boot.img from whatever rom or back up your using via fastboot and your off

Make a flashable zip containing su binary and superuser.apk and flash it. Then flash it and then flash the rom.

If you do that then first the Superuser.apk and su binary will be flashed to /system, then when you flash the ROM, /system is wiped and the ROM is flashed. So that doesn't achieve anything. To root an unrooted ROM, you have to first flash the ROM and then the Superuser zip.
In any case, the OP's problem has nothing to do with root access.

Just to clear something up here, once you have s-off or htcdev unlocked bootloaders you do of need root to flash roms. You only need a working recovery. The roms you flash may have root. But it is not a requirement these days for rom flashing. A root exploit is usually needed to flash a recovery on an otherwise locked device, but not for us
