Cleaning the Power button on Kindle - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I'm having an issue where a foreign substance (possibly sugar based) has gotten on the power button and some went just inside and around it. When I first noticed I tried clean it out with a sharp knife (hopefully I didn't aid in packing it in there) and was able to remove a good portion. Since then though the power button is initially hard to press but if I hit it a couple times in succession it seems free like it should be.
I can find my way around software problems but hardware issues are an unknown territory. Would there be anyway to correct this without disassembling the tablet? I don't believe contact cleaner would be very smart lol. Any help will be appreciated by me hitting the 'Thanks' button for you

So how was that donut?
I don't think contact cleaner would hurt anything, but I would try a few drops of isopropil alcohol to try and dissolve that sugar. Do it with the KF turned off, and wait a few seconds before trying the button.
If that doesn't work, look on YouTube for a guide to take it apart, it's easier than you think.

[Q] Resurrected my Epic from the toilet. One problem though.

Ok my one and a half year old son got a hold of my Epic Touch and I dont know for how long he had it in the toilet.I knew this day would come but I was hoping for it to be my girlfriend's original Epic, lol.
So I took it apart, dryed it real good with paper towel first, then with air and baked it in oven for a minute or two.
I put it back together and it works! Its amazing because after my son diped it in water it layed wet for about twenty minutes before I found it.
I have one question for those that have more knowledge about Epic's internals:
Everything works except the POWER BUTTON!Yes I can use the power button one time to turn on the phone but after that it doesnt work anymore.
I cant turn off the phone, bring up the shutdown/airplane mode menu or anything else,in order to turn off the phone I need to pull battery.
Yes I took it apart again cleaned everything with rubbin alcohol inside and still same problem, any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Oh,is there any apps out there that can map power button to search or home buttons?

Do not power it back on.. Put it in a sealed bowl and fill it with rice. Leave it there for at least 24hrs. Even longer if you want the best result. It takes water damage a couple of weeks to really rear its ugly head. Sofar rice seems to be the best bet.
Good luck.. Report back to help out others with this same prob.
Definitely try the rice trick... I would recommend doing that before baking your motherboard in the oven.
The only time I've ever heard of baking any electronic device in the oven is for the Xbox 360...

I already took it apart and dried it,plus put it in oven.I would say that there is no need for rice now, rice is for those that want to dry inside without talkn the phone apart.Everything works but the power button which is really strange.

I just did that to make sure any remaing moisture was gone.Still no answer why I cant use the power button except to turn on the phone.
Are you on a custom ROM? if so, maybe its the ROM bugging out, not the phone. Just a wild guess.
Do the RICE deal as mentioned above it WORKS on all sorts of electronics!

Im starting to think that too,im gonna try reflashing and see what happens.Power button does work to turn the phone on but after this it doesn't.
I just don't want to reflash because i been running Blazer 4.0 for 3 months now(the longest i ever went without flashing, lol) and i added all types of custom apk"s to that rom.I would usually extract apk files from this rom and pit them in the new one but i odexed it,so no it looks like im going to have to make a whole new rom and that's a day gone.
He has already gone far and above the rice trick. That would be repetitive and unnecessary.
Also, rubbing alcohol is not a good solution. It leaves a film on the metal that is highly corrosive. You need denatured alcohol.
The power button has a two step contact. That button most likely needs to be replaced. You can order cheap on a wholesale parts website.

Finally someone understands it.I don't think power button needs replacement because i use the power button to turn on the phone, lol. But after that power button doesn't work. The power button only works one time-to turn on the phone but that's it,so its not the button that's defective. Its gotta be software related or one of the chips that controls power button after the phone is on is fried.
I didnt kno the e4gt was out that long lol.. Either way anything could be going on.. It was dropped in water lol

Try button remapper to resolve the power button ordeal. I personally would ditch the search button and use that as the new power button.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The likely reason its not functioning after you power on is a short somewhere created by the liquid. When powered off the short is not affecting but once on it disables the button. I dont think you can replace that button unless you've got some decent soldering skills and you cant really be sure that even that would fix it. Liquid is one of those wildcards when it comes to electronics. You dont know if your screwed from jump or if the liquid might rear its ugly head later... too unpredictable.

I already thought of that,i was thinking if i run the phone for a while and internals get warm that this little drop of water will evaporate(if that's what it is because i heated in in the oven pretty good,i couldn't even touch it),i will have to see after few days of usage.
i thought the one problem... would be it smelled like ****. :good:

Lol the water emits an electrical shock when put in water which can damage any part of the phone.. Heating it up in a microwave is only resoldering the phone.. Wont fix an electrical shock that could have damaged a chip or a hardware button a led etc.. What would happen if you had a pc plugged in and dropped it in water while it was on? Just throw it in the microwave and itd be fine?

Lol,microwave?Who said anything about microwave?Im talking about regular oven, microwave will fry everything in few seconds.
Damn it,now its serious, phone wont go into Download Mode. When i try to put it in download mode i push "up" key for "Yes" and it flashes for about one second download mode, well not exactly it flashes this:
ODIN MODE(in red letters)
Product Name:SPH-700
Custom Binary Download:NO
Current Binary:Samsung Official
Downloading do not turn off target
It flashes that for about one second then it starts to boot into android.Another thing that i noticed is when i power on the phone i get Samsung Galaxy S2 logo then it disappears then the phone reboots and i get Samsung Galaxy S2 logo second time and then it boots into android.
So it boots after second galaxy s logo.I can still boot into CWM though that's only good thing.
Has anyone encountered similar phenomenon before?

Kindle Fire Power Button Wearing Out?

Hello All,
I was just curious if anyone has had any issues with the power button on their kindle fire wearing out?
What I mean is, we push the power button a lot especially when rebooting and/or flashing new roms.
Has anyone had their power button stop working?
I cant help but think all the flashing I am doing is taking a toll on it.
Any thoughts?
If you want to worry about it, all of the hardware has a lifespan and will eventually wear out. I think that time is a bigger factor than actual physical contact. If you figure out a way around that, my friend, please share!

Well one thing is for sure - the button isn't built 'industrial strength'! To make matters worse, it is placed at one of the most unfortunate locations on the device. I find it getting pressed inadvertantly when I change my reading position or bend forward while using it close to my body.

Dust and moisture exposure has a tendency to be detrimental on hardware buttons. My wife and I recieved Kindles last year and the difference in power buttons on both is like night and day. Her power button takes more pressure to get it to work meaning it hasn't been pressed nearly as many times as mine has. My Kindle's button feels weaker probably due to heavy use.
I have Atari 2600 joysticks from the early 80s and their one fire button STILL works fine. lol

Sgs2 won't boot. It just constantly vibrates when I put the battery in.

So, this sgs2 I have won't boot. When I put the battery in it boots right away without having to touch the power button. From some searching I thought it might be the power button but, I have no idea how to fix this. I made a USB jig and I can get it to enter download mode for about 2 seconds until the screen goes black again and starts to constantly vibrate once again. When I plug it into the computer with no battery it just vibrates with nothing on the screen at all. When I put the battery in it starts to boot and gets the the splash screen and then the screen turns off and starts the vibrating once again. I was thinking of preforming a JTAG but, I don't think it's that severe as it still shows some sign of life. If anyone could help me that would be great. Also it doesn't really respond to any button pressing when it's vibrating.
Mine does that when I hold the power button down. Thought you might like an independent test.

I had this issue when I purchased a phone off ebay. It could also be that the battery is shot.
Mine did this this morning when I put in an extended battery. I took the battery out, let it sit for a few, and put it back in, and everything is ok
I had the same issue I sent it into Samsung and they replaced the PBA board/ motherboard

If it vibrates every 2 seconds, then it is most likely your power button. Very common issue with this phone. Already swapped 2 phones because of it. If you really wanna mess with it to get it to work again, just keep pressing that power button 100 times to unstick it. It will happen again though
F**k I just posted a thread about my phone doing the same thing, was told to search. So up setting. Gonna leave it set and see what happens then gonna nail power button a lot lol. And go from there

I did the nail the power button a ton of times to get it unstuck. Lol. Working for now.
mine would load the Samsung screen the start the vibrating, I found out that if you hit the power button every two seconds I could get it to boot (given I was just turning the screen on and off till it unstuck)

This happened to my gf's phone, we both have s2s. Hers was completely stock and lasted 3 weeks until that happened. Had to get a new phone. Board was gone.
Xda T989
It's happening to me right now.
Pressing the power button many times got it to boot up, but then once I stopped it'll just restart again.
Another thing to note is that my battery hasn't been charging right. It'll say 100% charged. When I unplug it, it'll go straight to 97%.
Battery would drop to 80% within 30 minutes.
I have this problem intermittently with my phone. There is a post I found in THIS thread which was able to solve the problem for me.
I took apart my phone (it's really simple, only 6 screws), removed the logic board (be very careful, you don't want to snap it), and sprayed the ever loving [email protected]%# out of it with CRC QD Electronic Cleaner. I was able to pick up the electronic cleaner at my local auto shop.
REMEMBER TO REMOVE YOUR mircoSD and SIM cards BEFORE you take off the plastic covering the logic board!
At first I sprayed the entire board to get any kind of gunk off. I wiped it down with a Q-tip, sprayed it again, and then used a hair dryer to dry the logic board.
Then I soaked a Q-Tip with the QD electronic cleaner, and pressed the power button with the soaked Q-tip approx 50-70 times, resoaking the Q-tip every 20 presses or so. You really want that cleaner to seep into the power button so that you can remove the gunk that got stuck inside.
After that, I pointed the plastic nozzle of the QD cleaner directly at the bower button, and sprayed into it while pressing the button with the plastic nozzle. I used light, quick, short sprays less than 1/2 a second for this part, because anything longer or stronger would spray the QD cleaner in every damn direction. My process was to spray the cleaner, push the button with the nozzle 20-30 times, spray some more cleaner, press buttons another 20x, until I must have pressed that damn button at least 120-150 times.
Afterwards, I did more drying with a hair dryer, and then reassembled my phone.
It fixed the problem! The last time this has happened to me was approx. 5 days ago, and I haven't had a restarting problem since!
Good luck!

I'm going to try this!
I cleaned mine with alcohol and it works for a few hours at a time before the problem resurfaces.
Hopefully that QD cleaner will fix it long term.

[Q] Problems with power button and no way to fix it, workarounds?

It seems that my power button has died on my Galaxy Nexus, which is a huge pain in the strategical locations. While I know how to turn the phone off should it shut down, I have no idea how to handle anything else. I have my friends CALL ME to be able to unlock the phone and use it.
There are some apps on Android Market that specifically state that they fix power buttons, but none of them work with the latest versions of Android according to the reviews (if there's any I've missed, let me know).
I know that the phone can be turned off using a charger, since plugging it in or out makes the screen turn on. But are there other ways to turn on the screen, since it's a phone and I'm mobile most of the time?
Is there another way to remap the keys on Android? Note that I cannot root my phone, so options like that are not good either.
Is there a way to remotely turn on Android phone with a tablet through some app? Since I'm carrying my Nexus 7 with me and it uses my phones internet connection to stay online. I tried to find an app that does this, but could not find any.
Any help is much appreciated! I do not wish to buy Nexus 4 at the moment because it isn't much of an improvement and sending it back to UK for warranty seems like a huge mess that I would rather avoid for now.
Thanks!

First, try pgm (slide 2 wake).
Secondly, why can't you root the device? Once you have your screen on, you can turn on USB debugging, and use to it reboot to recovery or fastboot.
Third, there's some experience from users that fixed their own device's power button.

I had a similar problem with my Samsung Captivate a long time ago. I used WidgetLocker and enabled volume wake function. It uses volume buttons to wake the screen. I'm not sure if this feature is still available, but it's worth a try. If it is not, you can ask for a refund. There are also several apps/widgets to put the phone to sleep. I used this combo for a few months before I got a new phone. Hope this helps :fingers-crossed:
I still haven't found a solution and these apps that say they are a solution, do not work on latest versions of Android. Any other options?

I've managed to fix my power button recently, its a hardware problem. Do this only if you dont have warranty and are comfortable with opening up your Nexus.
Go to iFixit website and follow instructions to dissassemble the Nexus, its quite easy, a few screws and flat cable disconnects. Next, you need to remove your power button flex cable from the motherboard, do this by lifting the cable connector on the motherboard up and pulling it gently out.
Next thing is a bit tricky and you need to have pretty good sight and precision.
On the flex cable the button consists of 2 pieces, the flex cable and the button itself, which is like a black sticker sticked on the flex cable.
I've removed the sticker and the button that is glued to it with a scalpel (careful!!) and I've found actually rust and dirt on contacts (dunno how rust got there, i have expected dirt only), and then with my scalpel I've carefully scratched the dirt and rust of both parts of the button and its contacts on the flex cable. After that I've put the black sticker back on the flex as it was before (if it wont glue tape it with a small piece of tape) and return everything where it was and assemble Nexus back togeather. And voila! It works!
Keep in mind that I didn't have warranty so it was either open up and try to repair or toss a $200 device. Also, I'm not responsible for any damage that you do to your phone, this is just a brief description of my power button fix. Hope there will be more successful repairs :fingers-crossed:
I had to use volume_wake, while waiting for replacement power button. But this feature does not present on stock roms.
I believe i've read about remapping the hardware buttons; if you're interested, search google. I personally prefer and use smart screen on. I just wave over the proximity sensor and the screen turns on.
Try procedure described here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus/700265-power-button-not-working.html#post5797688.
I was very skeptical, but it indeed worked on my phone. Power button started to act normally again! I was amazed!

Solved the same problem with dj_chapz suggestion posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41282390&postcount=8
After I split in half the button I found oxidized contacts with green and black scurf. Cleaned it with little amount of ethyl - works perfectly!

I just did this repair and I have large clumbsy fingers. thank you! I just had to remove corrosion between the button contacts and around. i dabbed nail polish remover (i'm not sure if that is a bad idea or not, but it got my phone working!) and did a little bit of scraping. on my sch-i515 there was a some clear plastic folded over the back sticker part that i had to get up, then i was able to get the black part up without having to fully remove it.

Power button not working

I took apart my phone to see how hard or easy it would be to replace the s pen digitizer and now my power button isn't working. I've taken it alley again to see the prettier button itself and it looks to be unharmed and all the connections are connected. I'm scratching my head and have done several searches with no luck. Anyone have any idea on what I could do to fix it without buying a new button? Thanks

Anyone have any idea on what I could do to fix it without buying a new button? Thanks

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the back case cover has to be on the phone (with screws) .
