I have the Sprint SPH-l900 Galaxy Note 2 and every now and then I pick up some 4G data in my house, but when it says "4G" the download/upload arrows wont turn on and I can't use any data, if i try to access the web after a few seconds it switches over to 3G. Sprint said they are "Testing" my market, Lakeland-Winter Haven area. Is this why? anyone have any ideas? I haven't left my town in weeks so I haven't actually used my 4G yet in a city with fully functioning 4G like Orlando so I dont even know if it works.

I rooted and updated (keeping root) as soon as I got my phone and I cannot figure out if my 4G signal is weak or I'm having issues:
My 4G widget turns on just fine, and occasionally I see the 4G icon with 0 or 1 bar. And then the icon goes away. My MAC address matches my sticker, so at leasy I have that going for me.
Surely there is some diagnostic I can run to confirm when I am connected to a 4G/wimax tower, other than relying on the icon??
thanks!
How is 4G coverage in your area? Did you try other areas? I had sort of a similar issue where I would get 4G but it would drop after a few seconds and I would have to reconnect it by hitting scan.
Did you flash new radio and the wimax update? What rom are you using?
I am using a rooted version of the latest stock update 1.47.651.1. I followed this thread to the letter:

I am in Las Vegas and about 2 miles from where the CITA Wireless convention was held. If anyone should have 4G access I would think I should!
If I can somehow confirm the 4G connection through logcat or a shell command then I will just assume that I have a weak signal.
In Chicago you can go from 0 to 3 in the span of 2 blocks. I suggest you get closer to downtown to check

Ok, success! I was finally able to maintain a 4G signal. Looks like I was just getting a weak signal. There are a lot of buildings around all of the places I am checking.
Thanks for the help!
i live within a couple miles of the sprint campus in ks so i get good 4g here but when my evo shows the 4g signal bars and i try to use the browser the signal bars drop to nothing and starts scanning again any help is appreciated
any one know what is wrong sometimes m phone wont even connect to 4g
I have my Galaxy Nexus running CM10 (don't think that would make a difference, but who knows?). I was able to connect to 4g a few weeks ago, but recently I have found that I am unable to connect to 4g. I live Manhattan, KS and Overland Park, KS which are both Sprint 4g markets. I turn mobile data on and select LTE/CDMA and the phone just sits there without any data connection. Sometimes 3g will pop up, but that doesn't happen often. I have updated both my PRL and Profile from Sprint, but that didn't do anything. Any suggestions?
More on this. I re-installed CM10 and 4g was working fine until I connected to the Wifi network I usually use. Once I disconnected from that, I can't get 4g again. Can anybody help?
Probably an issue with the nightlies.. Make a backup, wipe, and flash back to stock?
Rooted and tether enabled stock JB is actually quite nice, FWIW.
Hi guys, I'm plenty familiar with the Note II having had mine since October release. I'm having an issue where I will be in a solid 4G coverage area (at my home) and my phone will stay in 2G mode.
There is a problem with either the tower or the phone, I'm leaning toward tower because my wife has my old Sensation 4G which is also staying on 2G. Have any of you encountered/noticed that your phone stays in 2G even though you are in a 4G coverage area? For me either on the Sensation or Note II, I just pick WCDMA, 4G pops in and works great. The only problem is that I have to remember to put it back on auto when I leave the area. I looked up and attempted the cell codes for making the phone prefer 4G, but without success there. Also my phone picks up 4G automatically when I'm at work, so again leaning toward tower (but how and why the tower can control this I have no idea).
I also noticed some threads claiming wifi calling would detect wireless networks nearby and disable 4G. I'm leaning towards BS on that because 1. my wi-fi is almost always turned off (true unlimited 4G plan), and 2. when I disable wifi calling all together it still exhibits the same behavior.
I'm running out of ideas - any help is appreciated!

In settings>more settings>mobile networks>network mode:
You should ALWAYS be set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)
This will automatically get you the best data signal available at your location. If you only get 2G in some locations, that's normal. You can try calling TMO support and have them check your address to see if you SHOULD have 4G at that location. If you really want to try to see what is going on, install an app called Open Signal Maps form the Play store. Among other useful things, it will geolocate the towers you are connected to complete with distance and mapped street address.
Where I live I only ever get 2 or 3 bars of 2G data. I use the TMO wifi calling app for all my calls and texting. This is only way I can get reliable service at home.

Thanks for replying vouty. When I switch from auto mode to WCDMA I have 4 full bars. That's the funny part. Speedtest is giving me around 12Mbps down 3 up on average (I live right by the tower - like .5 mile), so there is for sure something strange happening. If I keep wifi on it really isn't an issue, but I prefer to not mess with wifi and just keep it in 4G while at home, but as frustrating as this problem is, the phone refuses to switch from 2G on it's own. Once I toggle from AUTO to WCDMA, and then back to auto - it will stay on 4G. It's almost as if I am waking it up and causing the phone to re-detect the signal.

Cool app, very useful, appears I am on 3g at home. Turning off wifi to see if it changes to edge while using data.

4G is always a priority over 3G if you have it enabled. There's no way around it unless you switch lte off. So if you're in a weak 4G coverage and your phone gets the signal it will take over your 3G. Wifi is always 1st priority, 4G 2nd, then 3G, finally 2G. As long as those radio are on that's the order they work. Was always like that even in wimax devices. Switch to cdma while at home or connect to wifi.
