[Q] android or jailbreak? - Windows Phone 8s by HTC

hi i have some trouble.
i would like to use my smartphone htc8s with usb OTG but windows doesn't allow do this.
is there a jailbreak or can I put android into my phone to get this feature?
thank you.

Do you really think that the phone can power a device such as a usb disk?
Doesn't it draw too much power for the phone to supply it?

mini usb to female usb adapter?

hi all does anyone know if it's possible to connect a usb flash drive to a mini usb and if a ppc will read the drive when plugged in?
It's possible. I saw some software that allowed you to do that, but beware, it will drain your battery severely.
thanks kraize, i wasn't planning on using it too often unplugged anyway but didn't think a flash drive would use that much power. would be nice if i could connect up a laptop hdd to the mini usb but not sure if it would have the power to run it anyway or access it?
It won't work. I tried it on my kaiser, and it didn't work. The only phones that can do that are the HTC Advantage, and the XDA Flame. No other phones has that hardware capasity.
Thanks hollywould, i did suspect that would be the case and thought someone would've tried it. didn't think it would be able to access hdd but was hoping

USB cable not mounting to iMac

The epic touch came with usb cable, at first I had problems mounting my phone to my iMac... My computer wouldn't pull up my phone.
I switched to HTC cable and my computer is finding my phone and I'm able to move stuff around.
Anyone else with this problem?
Also, I'm about to root... Which cable should I use (htc shows up on iMac or ET4G cable which still don't show), taking precautions to avoid bricking my phone. I read not to use htc cable to root... Confused here...????

I know with the Samsung cable the only way my Mac can see it is if I have USB Debugging on...maybe try that if you don't have it on already.

Charging and using usb hdd - possible?

Hi everybody
I'm just about to mount my carholder, and was wondering if it's possible somehow to charge my tab, and use an usb hdd at the same time?
I'll be using the tab for the children to watch movies, at it could be great to do it that way?
Thanks

As far as I know there's no way to do it, but there's always a modder who can prove me wrong... Stupid single proprietary connection.

Blame apple for the stupid single proprietary connection ... because that's who Samsung copied it from

The trick would be to find/DIY a powered USB hub that sends power upstream to the host device as well. You'll need a powered USB hub anyways for the HDD, power would come from the cigarette lighter.
It's risky, but maybe someone could take a non-powered USB hub and just inject more power into it. I've got an old USB hub that has two connectors on the host side. One for power+data and another one for just extra power ... what would happen if I hooked up the second power-only connector to something like the Samsung charger. Probably just fry the USB hub with too much current.
Oh, and if you want the Tab to charge with data you'll need a Pershoot Kernel ROM with Any USB Charge enabled on it ...
You cannot fry anything as long as the voltage remains around 5V. The current drain (Amps) ist always limited by the device itself. You could hook up a power supply that is capable of 5V at 100A without danger to the devices.
However I doubt that any USB hub would send power upstream as this could indeed fry a device that is not made to accept current upstream like a normal PC for example. Also I think that the tab would not accept upstream current while in USB host mode since this mode normaly requires downstream current from the tab to the devices. So I don't think pershoots kernel would help.

Achim
Edit:
I just found the thread about building your own cables. Click
"USB Host with power" is what you are looking for. Although I doubt that there is an aftermarket solution for this. You will have to solder the required cable yourself most probably.
can be done if you mod the dock...

It looks like it works! Both the phone and my 64GB flash drive are being powered via a USB charger connected to a Y-cable. As far as I can tell, the phone battery isn't being charged and may still be draining a bit--this may depend on the current delivered by the USB charger. But I've been playing music for hours from an attached USB flash drive with my screen on and the battery level is still sitting at 98%.
I've attached ZIP files with a boot image containing the kernel. The yakju boot image was created by replacing the stock kernel in a Nandroid boot image obtained from the Galaxy Nexus described in my sig. The other boot images were created from the boot image included with the Google factory ROM. I can't test these, so use with caution. NOTE!!! Make sure you do a Nandroid backup of your phone before trying out the attached boot images. Things can go wrong and you want to be able to recover.
This was posted earlier in the thread, but credits for the kernel code tweak, along with details, go to the contributor to this thread
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/30615-can-you-charge-usb-host-mode-simultaneously/
Have fun!
10/09/12:
I've added two more ZIP files. These contain boot images with the code modded such that the phone battery is charged when using the Y-cable. NOTE: The phone will think it is being charged any time a USB OTG cable is connected. I haven't figured out a way around this yet. This doesn't really hurt anything, except if you have your phone set to stay on when charging, you could end up running down your battery! Important safety tip.
10/15/12:
I've replaced the previous ZIP files with two new ones. These contain boot images for takju and yakju JRO03C/4.1.1 that provide USB OTG+charging, with the added benefit that you can still use a standard USB OTG cable to connect an external device. As in the stock kernel, the phone will provide power for the external device. In other words, the new kernel in the ZIP archives auto-detects if there is a charger attached via a y-cable and uses it to power the external device and charge the phone, if it's found.
I've also fixed the problem where the phone would show a charging icon in the notification bar if a USB OTG cable was attached without any external device connected to it.
NOTE: THESE ZIP FILES ARE NOT MEANT TO BE FLASHED TO YOUR PHONE. These files contain a file called boot.img that can be flashed to your rooted phone from your computer via ADB with the commands
fastboot flash boot /path/to/<boot>.img
fastboot reboot
You can learn more about using fastboot at http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/Fastboot.
12/28/12:
Version V4 is replacing V3. This new version fixes the bug where detaching external power from the USB OTG y-cable or USB hub wasn't detected by the phone. Now, when power is detached, the phone switches to battery power, including supplying battery power to any attached USB devices.
Note that the reverse is not true. If you connect external power when the phone and external USB devices are being powered by battery, the phone will continue to use battery power. The external power is not detected. When in doubt, disconnect and reconnect the USB OTG cable to cause the phone to recognize what's attached.

I believe he is making a reference to your op
I don't understand what op is asking.

I think he is wanting to somehow daisy chain the devices having power from the first one provide enough charge current for the last one. Least that is what im thinking he said i dunno though
Ok let me explain it a bit better. Lets say I have a flash drive (external storage, external hard drive, whatever you want to call it) I connect it to my phone with a usb to micro usb adapter. Now I have my ONLY micro usb connector in use, but after a while I'm running out of battery so I want to charge my phone BUT I can't since I can't remove my flash drive (because I'm using it).
Now I'm asking for an adapter or something that can let me connect my flash drive and still be able to charge my phone. like a 2 usb to 1 usb adapter for PC. Or like the adapter to connect 2 headphones in one headphone port.
I hope it's clear enough now.

Connect that to a powered hub, plug flash drive into one of the hub ports. That should work, though i don't use usb otg, so i couldn't say for sure.

Unfortunately, the answer is no. I've tried several ways to get this to work, with no success. I routinely mount a flash drive using a USB OTG cable and the Stickmount app in order to listen to my music collection. It works great, but USB OTG drains the phone battery rather quickly.
I even cut out a notch on my desktop dock so I could attach the flash drive while trying to charge the phone via the dock's pogo pins. Here's a thread discussing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651757
The USB standard does provide for a method of charging while using USB OTG via a device called an Accessory Charger Adapter. But I haven't found such a device available anywhere.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you do happen to find another solution, do let us know.
I don't think I have the bits needed to try it, but looking through the spec, I think you can simulate the requirements for the ACA.
Connect a 124K resistor from ID to GND on the micro side. That should tell the OTG host (the phone) to go to Charge/Host mode allowing the B device (memory stick etc) to work AND allowing the phone to charge... You will need to provide a decent 5V power connection. You need to power both the phone and the accessory device from this.

Ok I understand the resistor and where to connect it, but where I will connect the power source? if the memory stick is using the micro usb port?

Usb Hub

Hello there,
I've got myself an OTG cable, and if I connect a mouse, it works.
If I connect a keyboard it works.
And now I connect them both with a usb hub, doesn't work?
How can I solve this?
I've got already an OTG helper app.
Usb hub is a sitecom cn-060 and I'm on the galaxy note n7000
Anyone?

I've been diggin in the USB OTG feature as well.
Idk if you're question's been answered, but My best guess is that you're gonna need either an MHL with external USB port to provide power, which you can keep the pin arrangement standard, but it'll only work if powered by an A/C charger, or if you splice it and isolate the data +/- pins, then it'll still work if plugged into a computer or something of the sort...
There's some guides here on XDA that I've read, and ended up making my own, which seems to work better than the one I've gotten in the mail.
ANOTHER Solution, however... Use a POWERED USB hub, sourcing from your OTG cable..?
Cause I'm assuming that your device is capable of powering EITHER the Keyboard, OR the mouse, not both...
So providing power via powered usb hub should render them both active, and usable by your device...?
Idk, just figured I'd put it out there to ya.
If it helps, hit the thanks button!

Here's a pic of my OTG+PWRD-HUB setup...
And I took it to paint.exe and tried to outline it / highlight the important parts in the pic...
My paint skills are far from honed... =/
Also, sometimes you have to
plug/unplug OTG from phone,
and sometimes you
gotta switch the
order of the
2nd+3rd steps...
It Varies...
And if you have ROOT, which I'm gonna assume you do, KERNEL TUNER is a GREAT app, and in this scenario it helps me out too... if you don't know about it [forgive me if you do] it has a "MISC" section, where you can actually enable OTG over a regular USB Cable [My guess is it grounds the bus for the ID-Pin on the microUSB plug] which can be helpful in determining certain issues with OTG [make sure Fast Charge is disabled, for good measure, both in app and in ROM]...
Using that feature of Kernel Tuner in conjunction with ChainFire's "USB Host Diagnostics" app can REALLY help you narrow down and pinpoint the finer details of your scenarios. =]
That's mainly just for the sake of verification.
At one point in time I thought my old HUB was powered too, just cause when I used it with my laptop, the thumbdrives I plugged into lit up, lol.
But if your setup is similar, then the only thing I can think of that might be holding you down is the order in which you connect everything?
Idk, I'm no Dev [FAR from it], but I figured I'd put that out there, since this thread was up.
