Okay, I know I am probably asking a dumb question, my S3 from Sprint has 4.1.1 and I rooted the clockworkmod way that it showed on this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1743780 and in the video. Basically I used Odin and then used the clockworkmod file. I am not sure but from what I read this is a clockworkmod recovery? But all I did was a basic root and everything looks as always (same as sprint no custom rom etc) I just wanted to root for the tethering. Now I just received an update and it keeps popping up as a system update (I am not sure if its to 4.1.2 or 4.2 but, If I run it, will it crash my phone, do I need to temp unroot? or unroot and then update? Is there a step by step on how to update to to the latest without brick after or is it safe to just upgrade... If anyone has any links on this forum that answers this?
(used Odin and clockwork mod to root...just to use free tethering.)
Check the "everything ota" link in my sig

I want to root my phone to get WiFi tether.
I am confused. What is the best way to root the phone? I see a Zedomax Vid on youtube which links to a "version 1" file.
Can anyone post a link for the best way to root right now?
If I root the phone, is that the same as installing a custom ROM?
I want a custom rom eventually once they have been worked out a bit longer.
Right now, I just want to be rooted for wifi tether.
Thanks in advance and sorry for such basic questions, but I am getting a bit confused I as read through the forums.
My main concern with rooting the ET4g is the flash counter that I have read about here. I had my evo4g rooted so I'm not new to this but I am for the ET4g...Do these pre-rooted kernals replace the stock kernal? Will there eventually be a method to keep the stock kernal and root the phone? Will there be a way to bypass the flash counter built into the rooting process/a custom ROM? I want to have those questions answered before I root my phone b/c I don't want something to go wrong and then I can't get it replaced through sprint. The only reason I would want root is for wifi tethering...custom roms maybe but at this point I see no reason aside from random bugs that I would need a custom rom. Anyways sorry to jack this thread. I figured it was a similar question.
Edit: And maybe this thread should be moved into the questions section

You can flash a rooted kernel, then flash the stock to get back to the stock kernel and still be rooted. Both kernels are available in the developers section of this site. As far as the flash count goes - I'm not sure if there is a way to reset the counter.

Use Zedomax's method - I only say this because he includes the flash utility (ODIN) and a rooted .tar as well as a helpful step by step video.
You do NOT need to install a custom ROM to root - you can use odin to flash just the kernel.

Thanks for the reply. Should i use the method as on youtube with "version 1" link or is there an updated version?

Go HERE and use that version.. it is just the rooted stock kernel with a few tweaks. There are also links in that thread for ODIN (the flash utility) and Samsung Kies (you'll need to install this to obtain the proper drivers for your device) as well as a step by step method.
Hey guys, feel free to chew me out for this having been asked a million times but the other instances of this question always confuse me a bit so I wanted to ask for myself.
I was hoping someone could tell me how to return to rooted stock rather than running a custom rom. Also, once I return to stock, how do I get updates of the newest android software? Does a rooted gnex still get ota like our non root friends?
Please go easy on me for asking a question that I know has been answered before.

The easy way for you might be to check out mskip's tool kit found in dev section sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310. With it you can flash back to stock rom when you download it from Google directly http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html (make sure you choose the LTE one or GSM if thats what you need and choose the latest version) and place it in the appropriate location on your PC. Flashing is simple and should take just a few key presses but you need to install the drivers to work the program which are included, all this is included in mskips post and instructions.
So when your back to stock rom you will be able to get OTA notification again, what stops OTA notification happening is non stock rom (custom rom) , non original boot loader and custom recovery (clockwork mod recovery for example). So provided you go to stock rom, keep the boot loader version and recovery stock as included in the downloaded rom from Google site you should be OK to receive updates directly from Google. Root will allow OTA but bear in mind after OTA update completes you will loose root.
I hope this helps you out

Okay. So I believe I messed up. I accepted the OTA a few weeks ago and the next day realized some of my root required apps no longer worked. I was wondering what steps do I have to take to fix the root so that everything can work correctly once again.
Thanks,
In wondering how the OTA pass the custom recovery. Try in Development Section downloading a Stock Rooted version or acustom ROM.
Verify first of you can enter recovery. Stock/CWM/TWRP whatever you was using.
Let us know if you are in Stock Recovery and what version you have after the OTA. LG8 or LI3.

My carrier is US Cellular but the root method was the same step for step. My version says LI4. I am also rooted while still using the stock ROM.

if u have custom recovery boot into it and flash this http://k0nane.info/rom/ecm/TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip
If on stock recovery use odin https://rapidshare.com/files/4208525095/ODIN.zip and flash one of these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900492 to get it back
Hey folks. Just heard the 4.1.2 update is out. I am requesting for the stock koodo 4.1.2 with root injected into it. Preferably a flashable zip I can use through recovery. Seeing as I cant update through kies or OTA. Thanks guys. I hope I put this in the right spot and sorry for any duplicate threads in advance. I haven't seen anyone else send out a request yet on this matter.

If it's actually up, it hasn't been uploaded here just yet. That being said, you could backup your stuff and update with http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ (go check if the firmware is out for SGH-747m).
It won't be pre-rooted but you can root after flashing it. Also, Odin is usually needed to flash stock.

Stock with root injected is good if you don't want to trigger the flash counter incured by using a custom recovery. If it is a zip you will trigger the flash counter. The stock root injected would need to be done with odin or heimdall.
if you just want root then pulled the firmware from sammobile and then just root it.
Someone is bound to put up a rooted stock zip soon. are you rooted now ?
Yes I am. I originally used Odin to to do so. I found someone on here that had the koodo 4.1.1 with root already added.
Send from my awesome stock rooted I-747M from koodo.
Just to inform you, the flash counter was triggered using root66_KDO_I747MVLDLK4 through odin. It changed from official Samsung to custom and the counter to 1. This allows me to update through kies but not OTA. I want to use OTA so I can keep root. Here is what ive been trying...
Installed Triangle Away and reset the counter to 0 and back to Official Samsung SGH-I747M. I can now go into software update and perform an update. But now instead of saying my phone has been modified, it just does an endless searching for updates. My plan was to use voodoo root keeper but its pointless now if I cant even see that update.
Ohhh well. I can go back to stock and update that way (which I will eventually do) but I absolutely need root as I use my phone for ARliberator, OBD2, and much more.
I will keep searching and hoping I can find a way to update to 4.1.2 to keep root or just be patient and wait for someone to make a stock rooted version I can install through odin or flash recovery.

It's just as easy to flash the update and then root. There are guides all over the stickies for it.
OK, I went ahead and updated with kies, then used CF autoroot with odin and now im upgraded with root. Now I feel like an idiot.... It seems so simple now and easy to do. I just made a bigger deal out of it than it was. Kept all my existing apps and info on the phone too. But made a backup just in case. You may now close this thread. Thanks!
How to root 4.1.2? I was rooted for long time 4.1.1 and it was easy to find how to root it, but now I cannot find.
Is it the same with Odin and to use the 4.1.1 file?
CASUAL worked great....
You want untouched stock 4.12 and rooted? Check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2388065
Or you can just go flash one of the custom ROM 4.12 in the development forum.
I am getting error when I try to root it with CASUAL.
Yes, I am trying to flash custom ROM
CF AutoRoot will root it
Dl goo manager or Rom manager from market
Install custom recovery from dl'd app
Flash away
CF autoroot is how I did mine as well. Needs to be flashed with Odin (or mobile Odin I assume)

Rooting over a previous root
Hello, I am using the Canadian Samsung GS3 I747M
I understand that it is the same as the At&t version so I used Odin and rooted it last night with clockworkmod. Not sure why but my phone says the root is using about 4gb of space.
I tried flashing CM10.1.2 on my phone (the At&t version of the .zip) but it failed continuously.
I assumed it was because I was out of space on the phone due to clockworkmod recovery.
As I do more research, I am under the impression I may have rooted wrong, I have superuser and root apps work (like rom manager etc) but
I noticed as I tried to flash CM10.1.2, the phone kept writing "missing md5 file" or a variation of that statement.
I saw the xda video on how to root and I was thinking I would redo it and follow that more closely but I am not sure if I can root over top of the current root I have on the phone (is that possible). Or if that is necessary at all. And how I am going to free up the space on my internal storage.
I am purchasing a large micro sd and hoping to put all these rom and root files on that so I don't use up all my internal space. I am unsure how to move clockworkmod recovery to the SD aswell
I apologize in advance if this is posted in the wrong spot.
I'd appreciate any help at all.
Thanks
My advice is when you get your SD card, get the rom on it, "backup on external sdcard" there is option in cwm like this and format the phone. About the missing md5 check the file, it may be corrupted.
