[Q] Thinking about buying an Acer Iconia A200 - Acer Iconia Tab A100

I am planning to get a new tablet as my Viewsonic GTab is dying.
I see a Iconia A200 has a good price point and am wondering if There is anyone on this forum who has one, and if there are any
threads on rooting, and updating to Jelly Bean, etc. I have not found any, but maybe it's because I do not know how to search for it.
Any help and advice would be much appreciated!
Aloha!

I don't really have an opinion on the a200, but there are some roms in the a500 forum specifically for the a200. And there is a forum dedicated to the a200 here http://www.acertabletforum.com/forum/acer-a200-hacking/

What about the nexus 7? I'm trying to hold for the 7.7, because the development on the A100 is dead, not sure on the a500 /a200 front.

Development isn't quite dead yet .
But If I were looking for an A200 i'd go for the A500 instead. Much better dev scene there for getting your hands on some Jelly Beans as well its the same thing with an extra camera.

I had originally planned to get an a200 for my 10" tablet, but after being ignored on a few ads I went with the Toshiba thrive instead, just plain better device then the a200 or a500, hands down. Full size SD card, full size USB with host, full size HDMI, removable rear cover and battery, batteries are like 10 bucks, its the best deal for a 10" tegra2 tablet, period.

My experience of Acer with the A100 has put me off them for life; poor update support (that was discontinued after 9 months of ownership) and dodgy quality control seem to be their Hallmark. I was recently asked to overhaul a friend's Acer laptop and discovered there had been no official driver support or Bios updates since it released 4 years ago. By contrast, my Toshiba has had about 8 BIOS updates and continued to get driver updates for 3 years after I bought it....

[Q] advice :/

Today on black Friday I picked up a Toshiba thrive and Acer A100 tab. They're both nice. I have an ipad 2 (got for work) and a my touch 4g. I've been wanting an andoid tablet for my own and now I'm torn between the two. Any suggestions / advice? There is no need for either, I just want one or the other lol. I just want an opinion on both. Thanks..
I have the A100 and played with the thrive the A100 is really smooth and manages memory real well the tegra Zone games are slick as well It is a great tablet for the money!
They have about the same specs hardware wise, so it comes down to size preference.
Personally, 7" is perfect in my opinion in being portable, and being easy to hold/use and still having a lot of screen space.
If you already have a iPad which is a 10incher, I'd keep the A100, and return the Thrive, unless you would prefer another larger tablet for maybe movie or webbrowsing.

Yea I'm in the same boat. I couldn't resist so I have both as of now. I'm thinking the Thrive will be going back as they don't update it as often.
Sent from my A100 using xda premium
I haven't used the Thrive specifically, but having had various other 9-10 inch tablets, I have to say I prefer the 7" form factor.
Don't forget, we're supposed to get ICS on January
keep the acer a100 easy to take around n easy to use can do a lot on this i love mine but i also have acer a500 for home ..... they seem to stay updated....
Stop into a Best Buy and test it out. They should have them on display. That's what I ended up doing. There are advantages and disadvantages to the 7" size.
I picked up the A100 then started to try for 10" tabs and kept missing out on the instantly gone deals. Best Buy ended up starting their Cyber Monday deals this morning and had an 8gb A500 for $229. Not quite the $212 16gb deal from Kmart but good enough that I picked one up. I'm now debating the two. The A500's winning out since the wife definitely likes the 10" better.

Looking to get a tablet

Hey I was in staples today and I saw the acer Iconia a200 tablet. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is similare to your acer iconia a100. I do not see a development section for the a200 but it looks like a really nice device.
The main thing I like is that it has a full size usb port. It also has a trgra 2 dual core with 16 gigs of ram and 16 gig hard drive and it is upgradable to ics if the spec sheet is right. Anyway if there is no development going on for it then I dont want it I need to be able to root and all that good stuff. So I was just wondering if any of you guys can help me out.
thank you,
Charlie
Okay so I did some more research on it and first of all it does not have 16 gigs of ram and I did not think so even pc dont come with that. Anyway it has 1 gig. The only differences between the a100 and the a200 looks to be the size the 200 it 10.1" and the 100 7" and the 200 says that it comes with honeycomb upgradable to ICS, the 100 only says honeycomb. But I see from reading the dev threads that it looks like you guys already have a ics leak and you got a OTA update also.
SO the question is does the size matter when installing roms and cwm and things like that? I would guess yes because it is built into the build.prop but I dont know anyone have any Ideas?
wow no one knows anything? Thats a first oh well thanks anyway I got my answers
The a200 is a 10 inch tablet while the a100 is a 7 inch. So huge difference there. a200 has ICS a100 is just starting to roll out. Full usb is nice if youre planning to hook up xbox controller or usb hard drive, mouse or keyboard. A100 doesnt support this. a200 has 16gb ($329) 32gb($350) while a100 has 8 to 16gb. Rooting I believe is the same as rooting a100 with leaked ICS. Check the dev section posted by ZeroNull. Dual core is last years technology so IMO maybe spend the extra $70 and get an Asus Transformer pad for $399 on amazon. Right now its $392 and was as low as $380. You will get Tegra 3 which to me is a huge difference in performance in particular when using HDMI out. No lag on the TV whatsover. however if you want a 7 inch then the a100 is a pretty decent tablet. And its more pocket friendly and portable.
Theres a thread in the Asus Transformer Prime if you want to know about the 300.
Let me know if you have other questions or you can PM me.

Well I don't know what you're looking for on a tablet, but currently the 1st gen would be the best to get I think considering the price. Don't buy the $160 2nd gen model, you would have to find one on eBay or Craigslist.
The devs on here are coming closer everyday to getting ROMs for the kfHD, so if you want all the new and exciting features that Amazon had to offer go for that.
If you want an open device that is amazing, then I would go with the nexus 7. It has most of the same specs as the kfHD, but is pure vanilla Android with a few bonus features for the same price.
There's my rundown on things. Hope this helps!

The KFHD is nice as far as specs go, minus the lack of immediate expansion via an SD slot, but KF1 has a robust development community. One problem with the KF1 though is it is aging in a fast moving technological world. It will be hard for it to keep "keeping up" with the ever expanding hardware requirements. Well, any piece of computer related gear is going to be outdated quickly.
If you want something "cheap" without bells and whistles, the KF1 is a good buy currently. The KFHD will be unlocked sooner or later although in a year the KFHD will be old news and something much superior will then take the stage. The Nexus 7 looks pretty sweet and that's what I would buy if I had money lol

The KF1 stock is a setback compaed with present tablet technology. If one is used to the common features of many tablets currently (camera, mic, BT, copious amounts of memory and being a non-slave device) it sure is hard to grasp the stock Amazon experience. I remember when I first got the KF1 and thought it was pretty sweet as stock.
The reason for me saying this was because the only other tablet I had experience with BEFORE I had the KF1 was a horrible El cheapo WM8650 7" resistive screen running Froyo. That thing claimed to have an 800MHz CPU but sure didn't act like it. If the battery lasted 3 hours I felt lucky. I have a Samsung Android phone that runs Froyo and has 256MB of RAM just like the WM8650 and that phone will out perform that tablet anyday! So when I got a Kindle I felt lucky but eventually was tired of the limitations of the stock software.
Ok....maybe back to the topic at hand. I can understand your frustration with a stock Kindle lol

I do agree the nexus7 seems to be top of the line, however it does have a few downfalls that would steer me away from it (and did) 1- no rear facing camera 2-no landscape mode and 3 - no sd card slot. I would recommend a samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0 it has all the above features and is priced comparable to the nexus 7 and imho it would be the better tablet also the 8 gb version of the nexus 7 is no longer available forcing you to buy the 16 gb version which is more expensive with LESS FEATURES .....hope this helps i got my daughter the samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0 8 gb version for Christmas and both of us couldn't be happier. the galaxy tab also has a feature on it that's called ir blaster that allows you to use it as a universal remote all of this and the fact i only paid U.S. -175$ (retail i believe is around U.S. -199$) i think the samsing would be a better deal for features and price.

Personally, I'm kicking myself for not buying a nexus 7. Here's my point of view: the Samsung one has a camera on both sides and an SD card slot. I don't really need either. The KFHD has stereo speakers and an HDMI port. I thought they would be handy but it turns out those features are not terribly useful to me either. The nexus has crap speakers that can be fixed with a free volume app, landscape mode is locked but there's a free app for that as well. You can't plug it straight into the TV but that's also not much of an issue, because you can send it to a Roku box, or a Google TV add on box. What really takes the cake for me is, even the wifi only nexus 7 has GPS. A nexus owner can carry his tablet around the house, doing his reading, texting, and redditing; then walk right out to the car with it and drive across the country with sat-nav powered by tomtom while pumping your mp3s through the car stereo. All the while enjoying having the latest version of android.
PS. Kindles don't natively read epub files, which take up 1/3 the memory of Amazon's mobi format, without downloading a 3rd party app like moon plus or aldiko.

I agree w/ some others on here, nexus7 is a better buy! KF1 is still kind of awesome in its own lackluster way though.

[Q] Nexus 7, should I get one???

Hello guys, I am considering getting a nexus 7 tomorrow, but I just read there may be an upgrade coming to the tablet. I really like all specs for this device, but would be disappointed to buy this one, and then next month see a new nexus 8(?)
Just wanna have your advise on this, and also what do you think of it on regards of usability, reliability, rooting, custom software, performance, etc.
Thanks for taking time on reading this and sharing your advise. :fingers-crossed::good:

I've had my N7 (2013) since January, and I love it. I've had no issues with lag or anything of that sort. I am content with keeping the OS stock, only with root and Xposed Framework mods (same thing with my Nexus 5 and 10). That being said, since we're sooo close to Google I/O, I would personally wait. The only reason I bought one in January was because I was able to get a new 32GB model for $170 ($100 off normal price). I definitely wouldn't pay full price for one right now with Google I/O right around the corner, since I'd imagine the new one will be priced similarly, and the current model will probably be discounted as well. However, if you absolutely have to have one, it's a great little tablet.
Thanks for replying. I am still considering but seems its still a good choice for a tablet

You are asking in a Nexus 7 forum so will probably get a biased veiw.
Considering that, I think it's main selling point is great value for money. You also get instant updates and great ROM support. There are only rumours of a Nexus 8, the N7 is more than capable to do everything quick, efficiently and smootly. So even if one did come out I don't think you'd really suffer that much. The N7 is going to be future proof for 2 years I'd say from now.
Plus Best Buy has it on sale (the 16gb) for 199.99
Can't beat that deal c;

One thing i would recommend that if you are going to purchase the Nexus 7 tablet to go for the 32GB version not the 16gb. The nexus 7 does not use micro sdcards so you are limited to the size of your internal storage. Besides that the tablet is great! There is so much available for this tablet! I wouldn't worry to much about a new nexus device coming out soon. When a new device comes out it takes time for developers to catch up with the new device, and so if you get a device right when it comes out you have to wait for someone to find a way to root the device and then you have to wait for developers to create a custom recovery manager and you have to wait for developers to create custom roms for the device.
Currently for the Nexus 7 2013 you can:
install TWRP recovery manager (advanced recovery manager)
install MultiROM Manager (install multiple roms and choose which rom to load on boot)
install a great number of custom ROM's such as OmniROM, CyanogenMod, CleanROM, ParanoidROM, SlimKat ROM etc etc..
install Ubuntu Touch! -> This one is a lot of fun.
Install Kali PwnPad -> if you are into computer security you can install Kali PwnPad onto your nexus device and you can use external usb wifi devices such as the RTL8187 (ALFA AWUSH036H) with your nexus device and you can put that usb wifi device into monitor mode so you can use linux programs such as -> airacrack-ng, wifite, kismet, metasploit, social engineering toolkit, and others!
Link for Kali PwnPad XDA thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577356
install custom kernels There are so many great kernels for this tablet for example the ElementalX kernel!
And there are some great tools for your PC to use with your Nexus tablet such as WuGFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit. http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt
Trust me do yourself a favor and get this tablet!

I'd personally wait for several reasons - while only rumor it has been suggested that the upcoming Nexus 8 might replace the 7 at around the same price; so you'd get an updated larger product at around the current N7 price, which is great if the rumors are true. Secondly, the real reason - Google I/O is coming soon. Wait a little and your patience will be rewarded not that the N7 isn't nice; just that it's not long before you know what you can get with a little patience.
Wait the few extra months if you can. The Nexus 8 will be more than worth it
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I'd say it's the best budget tablet you can get! I'd wait a month or two to see if a new nexus 7 2014 will be announced or the rumored nexus 8. Unless you don't care about having the latest and greatest, cause the 7 is still amazing.
199 is nowhere near cheap enough. I got mine for 189 with a 25$ gift card at black Friday via staples price match.
Anyway I would definitely say you better open the box up and play with it for a while before buying. As long as you don't have touch screen issues (ghost touches, multi touch, etc) you're in the clear...

I just got the Nexus 7 32gb from Best Buy today with a price match of Staples for $179.00. Staples had an error with their online pricing and showed the 32gb for $179 instead of the 16gb in their paper ad for $179.
So far after unlocking and rooting the device, I have been happy with it.
Next step is to get going on ROM's to see what I like. Just did Franco Kernel as I have used his in the past and I've been happy with the performance.
Dudes, I'm also planning on getting a Nexus 7 2013 WiFi (flo). I just wanna ask, is 32 GB enough for high end games to be installed? Anda can you plug a flash drive via USB OTG to watch movies and stuff? Thanks.
I'd personally like to add that I just yesterday returned my Deb N7 from best buy I got for 268.80 with a price match for T-Mobile. It was bugging me ever since I bought it that the new one would be announced at google i/o. Really it's a great tablet but the loudness of the speakers and screen vibrancy didn't cut it. Although it was perfect in every other category.

Nexus 7 (2013) Should I buy it?

Hello,
So I have been looking for a tablet for my son for Christmas. He is only 3 (4 in June) Of course I looked at the Nabi's and Amazon Fire Kids edition, but the price for the specs you get kind of deter me. I can not see purchasing a tablet in 2015 with 1 gb of ram and 8 gb of storage.
So I have been looking at the Nexus 7 (2013). I know there are apps / launchers you can get to give any Android Tablet a kid friendly UI / environment. So I'm not worried about that. With 16 gb storage it will be more than enough to set it up for my son. (I don't plan on putting movies on it, Netflix kid mode is plenty good for that) The quad core processor with 2gb of ram seems like it would be a good performer. A lot of reviews of the Nabi's and Fire Kids tablets mention buggy, freezing up, lagging. I am sure the 1 gb ram contributes to this. Here is what I am looking to get.
Nexus 7
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DV...ds=nexus+7&dpPl=1&dpID=418KVzHTenL&ref=plSrch
Case
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00F9...C_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=Nexus+7+case&th=0
So, what do you think? This looks like the best Nexus 7 case for a 3 year old to me. Do you think this is a better idea then going with a subpar kids laptop? Also, I know Nabi can end up being a money pit, and they want you to pay for everything. Amazons comes with two year worry free warranty but to me it doesn't make up for it being a slow buggy tablet with crap resolution.
No idea about the case, looks plenty durable and suitable for rough housing though. As for the nexus, its an outstanding performer- still using mine now and don't want another tablet. It's way more capable than anything a youngster would want it for, handles games very well. I think it's even a bit of overkill for a kid.
The drawback is potential hardware problems- such as various screen touch issues. Asus took shortcuts on assembly. Hit or miss whether it would happen to you, but if it does you're kinda screwed. Some fixes are out there, and good luck trying to get asus or Google to take responsibility- make sure to get the warranty. For example mine goes totally unresponsive sometimes, i have to pop off the back and mess with it to make it work right again. Had it a couple years now and this just started in the past few months.
You could get lucky and never have a problem. If that's the case it's wonderful all around. To me, even with my problem, its far beyond worth the price tag.

I started out with one...and was so impressed that I bought one for each member of my family.
Yes, we are a family of Nexus 7 2013 users. No one has ever had any issues with it. Put it in a reasonable protective case, get a wireless QI charger for it (saves wear and tear on the usb connector...a lesson I learned the hard way on my previous non-Nexus tablet) and your son should be good to go.
Just be careful...you may fall in love with it and decide to keep it for yourself!

This is exactly what happened! lol. So I got it a few days ago. I got it all updated and everything seems to be great with it. I have had no issues at all. I really took a liking to it. The more I thought about, the more I did realize it was overkill for him. So I decided to keep it for myself. LOL. However, don't look at it as a selfish move. I really did not like any of the apps that turn it into a "kid" tablet. They didn't seem very user friendly, were buggy, and I just didn't like their layouts.
So, I ended up getting him a Nabi Dreamtab instead. Don't worry, he did alright. Specs:
Nabi Dreamtab HD8
8" 1920x1200 IPS Display
Nvidia Tegra 4 Processor
2GB RAM
16GB Storage
4500mah battery
Dual Front Facing Speakers
Built in Stylus
I think he is really going to like it! Not only does it have great specs, the built in stylus played a big part in my decision. The Nabi Art Studio looks pretty sweet with using the stylus.
I really like the Nexus 7 though. I have a brand new 64GB Cloud White Nexus 6 too. I feel it will help with the longevity of my phone. Now, when I am at home I will be on my Nexus 7. So my 6 will be my on the go device (obviously being its my phone) and my 7 will be my at home device. I also have a Nexus Player. LoL.
Just think, two months ago I never owned an Android device. I owned every iPhone from the 3-6 and never seen the need for a tablet. I sold my iPhone 6 / Apple TV and picked up a Nexus 6 / Nexus Player. I have had zero regrets and have not looked back since. I knew when I made the switch it would be for a Nexus, didn't think I would end up with 3. lol
