Lol samsung just cares about their international market, and tells us to go to hell. I don't think they will confirm the s3 getting 5.0 just so we can buy the s4 they probably see us as idiots who buy everything new . if they do it will be really late confirming.

Hey,
Samsung keeps talking about how the experience is more important than the software, just think that regardless if it's never updated again that Samsung was right about the software not being important..

Isn't that how it always works? Some new device gets released and the us market has to buy that in order to ge the newest os. Such as the list stated above is all international

I used to think it rocked! But as you can see, I already got off the Apple cart that I was on since 2007. Yep, Apple could do no wrong until I got a Nexus 7 tablet. Once exposed to the virus that is Android, my Apple immune system was compromised and I've now got the Android fever...

Samsung doesn't release updates frequently because of the hardware differences in the US versions... so we only get major updates.
EDIT: I would be severely surprised if the GS III US variants don't get 5.0
Oh wait
I don't think I see T999 only for international?
Or is that possible have custom rom for that?

That is kinda true And absolutely true of other cell makers like HTC, MOTO, LG and so on. But Samsung started with the s3 and took the note2 a step further. They basically said the hell with this and The note 2 is the same phone international or us. The only real difference is software. Of course there is the gsm and cdma variants but other than that once the international one gets 5.0 the us one can get it very easily. I think it will be the same with this phone. As long as the international one gets it we will. And it wont take as long. Now that's not to say Samsung or tmo will do it but CM will definitely do it. Especially since I think he is the proud owner of a tmo sgs3 I think. So rest assured you will see 5.0 and probably more on this device.
I think the direction that Samsung is trying to go is a good one and I hope that others will soon follow. To the point where there will be two different models the gsm\lte and the cdma\lte US world wide doesn't matter Just the carriers bloat. Even nicer would be if Google could some how stop the fragmentation and get all to produce vanilla android. Now that's probably a few years off yet if at all but it would be great. No more waiting for carriers to get the updates and all that. Just Google updates android and sends it out to all capable handsets done. Paradise.

True problem is I don't think Google cares much about how slow other carriers/manufacturers get update hence why they are always releasing new updqte every so often. The biggest advantage buying a phone from Google is that they obviously get everything first and sooner, they know that. Also I'm not sure how easily well get 5.0 ported from international rom from what I have read we can't really port their ROMs etc as they are really different inside . different processor, partitions, gpu that's why you can't flash international ROMs unless you want a brick, we'll get some unofficial ROMs but those are never as stable as when you build straight from source.

S3! Lol. The note is bigger than the S3 but I'm more than happy with the size and capability with my S3.
Its a tough choice. My buddy as an att note and it is really cool. Definitely an attention getter. But the s3 is going to be top dog for a while and should have some awesome development for it. Check both out and get the one that fits you best.

For me, the S3 isn't enough to leave my S2, especially with the price drop of the GNex AND the new nexus devices that will be released shortly, AND the other new phones that will be released shortly as well.
The TMo Note? That depends. Is it based on the Note 2 that will he released shortly, or is it based on the previous Note, putting it behind in rom development and basically another S2 type situation?
The TMo S2 was released so late that development was very, very slow and I see the TMo Note possibly having the same problem.
I DO like the Note, and would have gotten it in Feb had it been available on TMo then. But 5 months later? I'm gonna wait and see what else is coming along.

Would the Gnex be a good choice out of contract? I have to replace my samsung galaxy s2 because it had a carrier block from Tmobile (bought from craigslist). I just can't shell out >$600 but the Gnex is pretty cheap relatively.

The GNex is a great deal right now. I'm debating getting it as well, but am trying to hold off to see what the Nexus line is going to be like this year. The price will either stay steady, or continue to go down, so there is no drawback to waiting (unless you wait until a point where it's no longer made and out of stock, that is).
The only real drawbacks are it's last years Nexus, with new models a few months away, and the lack of SD card expansion (Google seems to have done away with that on their developer phones, but we'll see if that continues with the next series of Nexus phones).
However, it's guaranteed to get Jellybean (next month, confirmed), and will most likely get next year's update as well.
BTW, I'm only talking about the GSM GNexus. I don't even consider the Verizon version a Nexus device.

Well I thought about the Gnex for a while and decided that I wouldn't ever get it. I mean sure its got the curved and high resolution display, but its lacking key features like a micro SD card. And in actuality it will be more expensive for me to get the Gnex. So...I'm most likely going to go with the Galaxy S III but thanks for the suggestions!

I for one am going to wait til sept-oct too see the note 2 with a 5.5 screen. Which is also around the iphone 5 is set to release which will also means other goodies samsung and other companies will release to go head to head with it. I see no real reason to upgrade now and then want to upgrade again in just a few months, that's unless you have the money to burn like that.

Simply put, Verizon got their dirty paws on it. Came without Wallet (although it was able to be sideloaded), had some Verizon bloatware, and updates have been a nightmare for users (took months after ICS updates were released for Verizon GNex users to receive them). In fact, Google has since dropped support for it as a Nexus device (CDMA is a dead technology).

I have a Galaxy S3 in the mail from Tmobile right now, got it for under $200. Thinking of selling it and getting the Nexus unlocked from google. Now, I know that the Nexus's hardware is a bit behind the S3, what are some other differences in both phones? I'd like to hear it from people on here that actually used the phones and not some BS reviews on the net.
What would you do?
Thanks everyone.
I would keep the s3. I expect the S3 will be relevant a lot longer than the Nexus.

The Galaxy Nexus could possibly as well receive official updates for at least the next 2 versions of Android. I don't think we can say that about the GS3.

Of course you realize you will have to unlock it if you want to sell it to most people, will lose the warranty and T-Mobile may or may not detect the change in phones on a plan where they more or less own that phone until the contract is up. Right?
If the GS3 is already coming, I probably would just hold onto it, that's just me.
The resell value will be high probably around the time the next real Nexus comes out, then make your move.

TMO has no say on which phone he has to use. He pays the subsidized price which is recouped over the length of the contract. His rate plan remains independent of his device. As far as warranty, if you're able to root then you should be able to unroot and relock your bootloader (there are ways to reset your flash count as well). Resale value will be best though if it is carrier unlocked

WRONG...
not all the components have open source drivers so very frequently you end up needing to wait for source ( or stock rather) to be realeased in order for much development to occur.

no, i was actually looking to put complete stock android on it. like on the gnex. i'm not into roms that much. i have a G2 right now and its completely stock and i like it like that. so from my understanding i won't be able to do that, so i guess i'll have to sell the S3 (unlock it first with a code from TMO) and then get the gnex.
are there really any huge differences with the hardware between gnex and s3? like am i going to really miss out on something that s3 has that gnex doesn't?
Big main differences is better processors, more memory and better camera... outside of that not much
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I have the Gnex, my husband has the T-Mo S3. I have no regrets passing on the S3. It's a nice phone, but I have stock android with no fuss whatsoever. The Gnex software outperforms the S3 without a doubt (he's just got stock TW, so I'm not sure how it would do with a nice AOSP rom)
I agree with whoever mentioned the driver issue, the GTab got ICS 9 months later, and until it was released, no ROMs had cameras working. I'll take the Nexus over anything any day of the week.
I was close to getting the gs3 as well. Specs are fine but the development community is so much better. Yes we have cm10 for the s3 but how long will it take to get the next version. You trade some things away when you pick a phone. I will trade those specs for the best softwear and best dev community

Android 4.1 came with the Nexus 7. Allegedly, Google will be refreshing the Nexus 7 and releasing Android 5. It would be right in line with their release schedule to announce a new version of Android at I/O.

Yep...and that keeps right in line with AT&T mentality. The S2 was lucky to get that. Look at the fact that several U.S. carriers (smaller ones) have already updated to JB 4.1.2 on SGS3 models. AT&T being the way they are, will drag their @ss and we will be lucky to see this update. After all, why would they release an update that will break their apps...or make users happy.
I remember my HTC Inspire and the update to DHD to 2.3.5. Took AT&T 6 months or more to release it for the Inspire. It just happened to coincide with HTC's decision not to update the HTC DHD to ICS (after they had promised it).

Yah but my guess is that the Galaxy S3 will get Android 5 probably by the end of this year and it will be the last update the GS3 gets. I gave up and moved to a custom ROM and haven't bothered looking back. My next phone will probably be the next Nexus.

I agree.. A lot of people think carriers are at fault, well partially they are but they have to make apps and other little bells and whistles be compatible with any firmware updates. But like I said android 5 hasn't been announced yet. At all... Back when ICS and JB we're going to be released they placed Andy and the dessert selection outside Google. Nothing has been brought out yet. Unless they're taking an Apple motive and keeping everything super secret, I'm not going to hold my breath for android 5 or the next Nexus until the end of this year or the beginning of next. Google IO is around the corner and still no announcement of Android 5. They're main focus this year is going to be Google Glass Project since its ready to be sold to the public.

In years past, that only happened a few days before I/O, though. We are over a month out.
And carriers are at fault for having to add those "bells and whistles" to begin with. They should just put their apps in the Play Store and update them as compatibility issues are found.
To stick with the S3, or to get the latest and greatest.... that is the question.

That was an upgrade from my original Epic which I still have, I still love, and still runs all the new apps!!!
The original Epic just won't die!!!!
I would like an S4, but won't pay through the nose for it.....the S3 is working great and given my experience with the Epic I suspect it will continue.
I will likely skip the S4 gen phones and get whatever comes out the following year. By then it should have thought to text....

You lucky guy you!!!!!
I would if I could, but that darned contract/upgrade thingy has me stuck with my GS3 for a while.
I can't wait to see one and here some user opinions. It looks very nice, but not a HUGE upgrade from the GS3.
I'm curious if the 2600 mah battery is the same size as the one in the GS3.....that would be sweet!!!
I'm jealous....
I'm not getting the S4 merely because the CM team has stated they will not support it.

I know CM is nice in.all but that shouldn't sway you away from a great device especially GS4

Let’s start with the simplest form of this: CyanogenMod does not pre-announce support or lack of support for devices. Ever. Even for the Nexus 4, we did not announce support until a nightly build was available. Further, any announcement regarding the ‘dropping’ of device support will be communicated via this Google+ page, Twitter, Facebook, our blog, or a combination of those; it will not be something buried in a forum post.
This morning, a comment from a CM collaborator on XDA was taken to be as an ‘absolute’ in regards to support of the S4. He offered the opinion of four TeamHacksung maintainers, their frustrations and lack of interest in supporting the S4. What’s seemingly lost on those reading this is that his comments as an individual do not speak for CyanogenMod as an organization.
As for the team’s stance on the S4, there isn’t one at this time, and most definitely won’t be one before the device is sold at retail.
-The CyanogenMod Team
I usually jump on the band wagon for the newest and greatest. I just can't help myself. But if I'm smart this time and if experience has taught me anything I'll stick with the s3 for a while. I know myself and whenever i get the newest "best" device, i end up frustrated waiting for new ROMs and strong Dev support. Right now the ROMs for the s3 are smokin' and the hardware is still REALLY good. I'm gonna try to hold off until i see how strong Dev support is for both the s4 and the HTC one. Wherever devs go i follow... Lol. Right now they're on top of the s3 and I'm loving it.

Oh please come on. I never met a CM ROM that was worth keeping. Nothing ever works right, my personal experience. TWiz stock rooted works just fine for me on the S3, from great battery life to performance and stability. I don't live my life by what the CM team does or doesn't do. Geez..
The S4 has nothing worth the hassle of selling this S3 for 200-250 and then having to spend 500-600 retail for a new S4 for me. I strictly text and listen to music and use facebook. The fact that it isn't a quad core alone for the US variant was the last nail on the coffin for me to say no.

This^ :good:
It helps that the S4 won't be too different software-wise from the S3
Just wondering everything we know seems to suggest a "nexus" phone really, even if it won't be branded as such. I did not care for the LG version, so I skipped it but I am seriously thinking of upgrading to the Moto X unless the information posted so far turns out to be wrong.
Not on Verizon lol
Edit: for me, I like specs. This phone will not keep my interest with mid range specs. Maybe if I see the software on this phone with the Google optimizations, I might consider. For now, eyes are on a potential Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 smartphone.

Just being curious, why are you interested in the Moto X and not the Nexus 4, when both devices look really similar in terms of specs (the Nexus 4 looks even slightly better) ?
I'm thinking about the just announced Droid Maxx to replace my GNex. I'm waiting until I can hold it and people start getting them. Spec sheets are overrated.

I think my power button is going out so I'm sort of in the market for a new phone(thank god for volume wake/navbar screen off). As long as the price below $250, gets better battery life than our GN, I'm in. But I'm also curious if this IS the new nexus or if they'll be releasing another $350 Nexus with better specs later this year.

dancingtortoise, it's not a new Nexus phone: the Nexus 4 will still be in available for sale. We can probably expect a new Nexus phone for Oct-Nov 2013.
Yeah, I like the customization options for it, only thing holding me back (and only by a small bit) is the last year specs. That said, if the price is right then I'll pick it over the Nexus 4 and finally drop Sprint to switch to TMobile. Regardless, the Moto X price I think will be the deciding factor, if it's $200-ish then alot of people will probably get it just based on the hype alone. If it's $300-ish or more then I imagine it will fall more into a niche market.
I started with the original moto droid but I swore off Motorola after I got the droid 3. I was very disappointed. I used a fascinate in between selling the d3 and getting the gnex. I was running hellybean 4.2.2 and loving it, on a single core! The new moto phones look nice, but I will wait until the next Google nexus comes out, no matter who makes it. I just hope the phone comes out for Verizon too this time!

The Nexus 4 was too flimsy, heard waaaaay too many horror stories about build quality, easy breaking and lock ups. And anyway the hardware improvements were not a big enough upgrade to me, and I already had the software on my GNex. The hardware upgrades here seem more of an actual upgrade(i like the alleged 32gb option). Even though as before I will have to wait and see, and I will already have the new software upgrades since I am assuming this thing runs 4.3

From everything I have heard, and certainly this has not been confirmed, there will never be another nexus phone on Verizon. Ever. Google was pissed the way Verizon dealt with them on the GNex and supposedly has unofficially said they will never do that again. So at the very least you may want to think of a plan B

And what device on Verizon DOESN'T have a locked bootloader (GNex doesn't count)? The One when/if it hits? Well, if you like the One, go for it. Based on what was released earlier today, the Moto X/Droid line is far from "mid range specs". Hogwash, pure hogwash. The mid range spec thing was a rumor based on rumor. Motorola didn't say that and neither has any carrier. It was assumed because the processor was listed as "dual core" on FCC filings. Further, we haven't really seen the device in action yet. So far it looks like stock Android with a couple of Motorola widgets and some custom icons tossed in here and there along the OS. Looking at Motorola's X8 processor, it seems far from "old". Just because you read "Dual Core" online, it doesn't really mean a whole lot in this case. Is it going to be developer friendly? Probably not. But it depends on what you want. If you want to spend the life of your device flashing buggy roms and waiting for CM XX.XX to finally finish right as the next version of Android comes out so you do it all over again, well, then it's probably not for you. I think the X8 looks very intriguing.
For me, if it runs smooth, fast and lasts as long as my GNex does with my Hyperion then frankly it's a home run. I've always looked to Nexus devices to get the latest updates. Now, with Google's new APK's, that's less of an issue to me. Further, with Motorola having exclusive right's to develop the "Droid" line for Verizon and talks of them slowing down device roll outs, I'm thinking that this might provide opportunities for more updates (Especially with Google having a hand in Motorola now).
Don't like it, don't buy it. Personally, I moved to Verizon for the GNex knowing full well that it might be the only thing remotely close to "Nexus" that the carrier ever got. If it runs smooth with zero lag then that puts it up there with the One, and both will stand above the S4. Looking at a Spec Sheet is right up there with a redneck showing off their belt buckle size. People are duped into buying laggy crappy phones with awesome spec sheets every quarter.
Chase those quad cores that don't even have software and apps optimized to use them.
Do you optimize, bros!?

Not sure but even if so, you could always buy a verizon phone, root it and toss pure Android on it You'd have to pay full price for that HTC one. Honestly paying full price for a subsidized verizon contract AND paying full price for a phone would just be silly.

Yeah, just not the moto phones with locked boot loaders That's what made me get rid of my d3. Well I'm happy with my gnex for now, we'll just have to wait and see. I don't see a need to get rid of it for at least another year. Even if we don't get KLP, cm or other ROM devs will keep it going for a bit.

From what I've read around the web.. Nothing official, of course.... The Moto X looks to be similar in specs as the Droid Ultra.
I don't know if Verizon cares or not, but there are a lot of g'nex users keeping their phones due to lack of a satisfactory replacement. Maybe that will put a little pressure on big V to have 1 nexus phone on their service.
Just dreaming....
