Hi all,
I'm about to flash a new ROM, I performed the nandroid backup.
Now when I power on with the volume down, it goes straight to a screen that says 'FastBoot' highlighted in red, and then my options are Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader and Power Down. I have tried doing it manually, as well as doing it with 'Rom Manager'. If I'm about to go to a new ROM, is this right? I have just downloaded the new rom to the SD card, but can't get to the screen where I tell it which rom to select. How do I make it do this?
When it first comes on now, with the volume held down, it goes straight to 'FastBoot', when I select Bootloader, and then 'Recovery', it goes back to the 'FastBoot' screen...
EDIT: Forgot to include the details. Running a stock evo, haven't loaded a new ROM before. I have root access through unrevoked. I was able to access the Clockwork Mod just the other night to perform the backup, etc. Now, however, it won't let me. I'm betting it's something silly that I did, or one of the programs is stuck in 'Fastboot only' or something like that. But, I don't know where I would have selected that... HTC Evo, Android 2.2. Lastly, whatever I select in the 'FastBoot' program (either Bootloader, recovery, fastboot, etc) it will only reboot into 'Fastboot'.
EDIT 2: I should also add that the phone is loading up and working fine, it just won't let me get into 'recovery'
What am I doing wrong here?
Can I still change ROMS?
Thanks!!!!!

nothing's dead, your recovery just isn't working.
You need to install a recovery - either ClockworkMod's recovery (which is what I am assuming you're using) or TeamWin's, or an Amon-RA/clone.
Get that fixed, then go about your merry way flashing
What?? How did u nandroid if you can't flash a Rom... Just try power and vol up not down.. select bootloader hit power then.. select recovery power ..
In recovery wipe data wipe cache then restore nandroid backup
Are u rooted via unrevoked or revolutionary? In Rom manager choose flash cwm recovery then select manual reboot Into recovery

yes, I have run a ClockworkMod recovery through ROM Manager. I have also run a Nandroid backup through ClockworkMod recovery. I am worried that if I try to select that option, it will try to reboot through 'Recovery', but be unable to reach it. Then, I might be stuck in a loop.
So, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling Rom Manager and QuickBoot, nothing changed. In 'Rom Manager', I have an option to 'Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery', which I haven't tried. I have tried Reboot into Recovery, which takes me into my 'fastboot' loop that I mentioned before.
So, from what you're telling me, what will happen if I select 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery'? Will it just flash the recovery there? or will it start the recovery process, then try to reboot into recovery mode (which it can't get to) to finish the process?
Sorry for so many questions. Just would rather ask before I try it so as not to have a really pretty paperweight of a phone...
THANKS!!!

Sorry, this reply came in while I was answering the other questions....
When I ran the nandroid backup, I wasn't having any trouble getting into Recovery. This inability to get into recovery just started. I am rooted with unrevoked v2.
If I can't get into recovery, and I select 'Flash CWM recovery', is part of that process of flashing the recovery going to try to reboot into recovery, then not be able to get to recovery and get me locked into a loop? or will it just flash right there and then I'll be able to power down and get to recovery like normal?
So after reading the other comments, I guess what I need to know is, what happens when I select 'flash clockwork mod recovery'?
Does it just flash from within the program, while the phone is still turned on?
Or
Does it start the process, then attempt to boot into recovery to finish the process?
If it does the first option, then I might be ok to do it. If it does the second, then I'm worried that to complete the process, I might be stuck as it tries to get into recovery that's not available....
Any thoughts from someone who has done this? What happens when you flash CWM Recovery?
Thanks!

Download that file. Rename it PC36IMG.zip. place it on the root of your sd card. Power off your phone. Hold the power button and volume down at the same time. If your phone boots into fastboot select boot loader, otherwise it will boot into bootloader and begin the update. Your phone will prompt you to install the update. I believe it will say hit volume up for yes or volume down to no. This will reflash your recovery.img. After this happens you will have a recovery installed.
Great. Thanks! So, after I do that, then I will be able to either (1) boot into recovery, which I can't do now or (2) just boot the phone as I normally do until I flash the new rom?
thanks so much! I'm learning so much about this from you all.
flashing cwm from from manager won't reboot to recovery till you choose to but will install cwm recovery that app was built to help facilitate the recovery install with ease in mind don't worry

Get rid of rom manager and cwm recovery

EDIT: I have fixed it by continuely running ROM Manager to reinstall 5.2.0.7, I did fix permissions then installed 5.2.0.7 and it works. However still having problems rebooting and shutting down, but i will fix that later
So recently i updated CWM. Then i ran into some issues, is that when i tried to do a date wipe and a cache wipe to do a clean install it wipes the user data fine but freezes on wipe /cache. i rebooted and tried again and
Sidenote: when I try to reboot or shutdown it gets stuck at the "shutting down" pop up and never fully shuts down/reboots
I am a bit afraid to try anything more right now
EDIT: I tried to get it into download mode, to maybe try to use odin to flash the older version of CWM. Problem is that i can't get it to go into download mode, and can't find a odin flashable CWM
you dont have any backups? are you on any current ROMs?
If so,
download clockwork recovery or ROM manager from the playstore
open it up
Allow super user permissions
Scroll down to the very bottom you will see a option that says "all clockworkmod recoveries"
Make sure you are on a WIFI for a good download
Choose the CWM 5.0.2.7 version, that one is more stable.. i hate the new one its gay as hell lol
Let it download itll need a good minute, try not to do anything else. you may have to try to download a few times if it freezes just be patient
once it downloads you are good to go and you can flash any ROM
let me know if you have more questions just PM me..
Hit thanks if this helped!

I am running AKOP Oct 1st nightly. I have backups with Titanium, and an older one for Nandroid backup. I launched ROM manager and tried to install the 5.0.2.7 version but ROM Manager seems to freeze and not work. I kill the app but it doesn't launch properly and only shows the title. I have to take out the battery and reboot to be able to launch ROM Manager up again. I think i may need to find a way to boot into Download and use odin to flash a new CWM and maybe the stock rooted ROM and go from there. I have to agree about the new CWM it is kinda a step back, wish i had looked it up before update.
I am going to PM you but I always like to have this out there in case anyone else is having the same issue or has had it.
for me...sometimes i cant get into recovery/download mode is because
i have a phone case and both buttons arent fully pressed. and as for the tar recovery
Odin T989 tar its a stable version
i recommend using twrp for now for more stability
i had a had a soft brick like everybody else using cwm 6.0.1.4 lol

I press both buttons and i end up in CWM 6.0.1.4. no case on the phone right now.
I have tried to download and install 5.2.0.7 though ROM Manager but it just freezes. This is what pops up right before it freezes http://i.imgur.com/1ryrP.png if it helps. I think ODIN may be the only way if i can make it boot to download that is.

yeah just flash the tar file thru odin and/or just flash over twrp (goomanager then go to the app>menu button>install openrecoveryscript)

My problem is that I can't get it to boot into download mode, that Odin needs it to be in for it to function. Pressing the volume buttons just makes it go into CWM.
I got it to reinstall 5.2.0.7. It took awhile but it looks like its still working. Just tested it out and it works. Now i know to not update CWM. What are the other recovery options that might be better then CWM?

Ok, let's start at the very beginning (it's a very good place to start).
Before we get started, I'm going to make the following assumptions:
You successfully rooted your phone through Odin.
You currently have a custom recovery (either TWRP or CWM).
You have a Rom you'd like to flash on either your internal storage or your SDcard (I'd recommend the SDcard, but that's your prerogative).
If either of the first two is not true, I'd recommend going back to qbking77's thread and check out the videos on how to use Odin to gain root and a custom recovery.
If number 3 above is not true, download a ROM (nor someone new to flashing/custom Roms, I'd recommend Freeza's stock rooted Rom, as it's identical to stock TW, but just with Root). Once you download a Rom, check it's md5sum to verify that it's a good download. Copy the file to your SD card and get ready to flash (make sure you have decent battery life left, I try to keep at least 50% or more when flashing Roms, although it shouldn't take too long.
I'll give directions on how to flash a Rom below. The instructions will be for TWRP, but CWM has similar options/settings
Turn your phone completely off (hold down power for 3-5 seconds)
Boot your phone into recovery. Hold Up, Menu, and Power for a few seconds (until SAMSUNG appears on your screen and the phone vibrates)
Make a Nandroid backup. I can't emphasize this enough. In flashing, it's almost a certainty that one time, something will mess up. When that happens, you want to be able to restore a backup. In TWRP, just go into Backup Menu and choose where you want it (internal vs. External storage). It takes my phone a few (5-10) minutes to completely backup my data.
In TWRP, click the wipe button, then system. This will completely wipe the Rom from your phone. Doing this will allow you to get a "clean" install, without any settings or leftover files from your old Rom getting in the way. Instead, you could only wipe data (factory reset), which is good enough for most Roms. I'd still recommend a system wipe, though.
Also while in the Wipe menu, wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.
Go back to the TWRP main menu.
Click Install, then find your Rom zip file (may have to switch from internal to external storage).
Let TWRP do it's thing.
If you're installing a TW-based Rom, chances are it had gapps already installed. If not, you should now flash the correct gapps package from goo.im. Make sure you're flashing the correct one, as if you don't, your google apps will force close upon use.
Reboot into system and give it time to boot (first boot sometimes takes a couple of minutes).
Set up your phone the way you like.
These should be the directions to follow whenever you flash a new Rom. Some Roms have the Aroma installer, so you'll have more options once you choose to flash the Rom zip, but those are typically easy to follow (and vary from Rom to Rom, so I won't be able to give you a good guide on that).
Hope this helps!

Ok, it sounds like your recovery is bonked (and yes, that is the technical term). Something must've gone wrong when you were flashing the recovery through Odin (not necessarily your fault, sounds like it might've been a corrupted download).
One thing you can do is to download the latest TWRP. The way to do this is to install the GooManager app from the play store.
Once GooManager is installed, click on the "menu" button, then choose "Install OpenRecoveryScript." This will download and install the latest version of TWRP. Let it do it's thing then try to reboot into recovery again (you can do it directly from GooManager, it's one of the main options).
Let me know if that works.

Most likely. Alot of people miss that step. You need to reboot recovery to disable the recovery install script that reflashes stock clockwork on boot.

To the OP why do you say you are rooted? Have to tried to install an app which requires root access and where able to? I think you failed to root the device at all. I think you need to go through the process all over again to root your device. Once you flash the custom recovery via odin you can not let the phone reboot, you must pull the battery then boot into the custom recovery flash the team Epic root zip which will prevent the stock recovery from being installed again. Then at this point will you be able to reboot the phone. Once it boots up verify you have SU installed and have root access. Now the MOST IMPORTANT thing you are going to do is shut down, boot back into custom recovery (cwm) and make a nandroid backup.

Hey,
I recently rooted my SGS3 using odin which worked flawlessly. Thereafter I installed CWM and began the fun of trying out new roms... Tried slimbean which was just ok for me. I read that Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 was one of the best so I installed this on my device. My fop-aw here was I didn't know you needed to install the google apps before you flashed the rom. I tried to install an version of google play via sd card apk file, but when i open the app it imediately closes. Right now i am stuck with a rom with no way to install the apps I so dearly enjoy lol... So.... now for the problem, I can no longer get access to CWM to reflash the rom even when I do the whole power, volume, home like before. It goes to download mode instead of the CWM recovery. What can I do to remedy this situation. I only know as much as I have read so lets pretend i am a dumbass. lol
Thanks in advance,

Volume up + power + home = recovery. Volume down + power + home = download mode...
And u flash the gapps after u flash the ROM.
if you still have issues accessing cwm then I suggest you download Rom manager apk install it and flash cwm using it. I got cwm through Rom manager, but then I now flashed latest philz recovery.
use Rom manager to install recovery and cm10.1.3 is already rooted so u will have success
cheers
Thanks
Worked like a charm thank you very much for your time.
? though it worked but not.
After installing Rom manager I had it load up my recovery file. I clicked on the backup file and... It rebooted taking me to CWM recovery screen but with only few options to choose from: reboot system now, apply update from external storage, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partiion, apply update from cache... Obviously I am doing something way wrong. Any ideas?
Try starting Rom Manager and selecting boot into recovery.

Hey guys. I apologize in advance if this a common issue but I'm on my device now and every time I try to type in the search box, the search box disappears.
Anywho, so for some reason my phone has both Clockworkmod and TWRP recoveries. Whenever I try to access recovery to flash either through ROM Manager, Goo, or the power menu, the phone reboots, attempts to go into recovery and then flashes back to black and tries to go into recovery again.
Does anyone know of a fix for this?
I'm using the latest version of CWM.

Well, personally I think you could try a couple of things.. First I would try this app if you are able to boot up into the os, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools and I would flash philz touch recovery as its compatible with twrp backups as well as cwm to which its based upon. And just flash that one recovery. And fingers crossed you will just have that one recovery. It simple, it will flash the recovery for you, it will download it for you, super easy. Now if that doesn't work, I would start at the beginning and go into download mode and ref lash stock ROM, root, and recovery via Odin.. And that will ensure you have one recovery. Also I'm not a huge fan of the two apps you are using ATM but that's just me.. Easier to just hop into recovery and flash ya know.
