I recently purchase a used Dinc2 with 2.3.4. It worked fine until i tried to root/unlock it. I followed the HTCDev guide for unlocking and after rebooting following accepting the agreement the phone stuck on the HTC splash screen. I've spent several weeks reading and searching trying to find a solution, but without any success. i'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
I don't consider myself a noob since I've been flashing my unlocked OG Droid for several years, however I will admit this HTC is a whole different animal.
Here are the details of what I've found so far:
* I can use volume down + power to get into hboot, which tells me the phone is unlocked with S-On.
* If i use fastboot oem lock I get " FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))"
* When I fastboot boot into CWM I get several E: Can't mount cache/ errors
* Formatting the cache fails with CWM and 4ext
* Flashing ROMs with either CWM or 4ext fails as well
Is there anything I should still try before writing this phone off?
thanks

You could try the root method in the "comprehensive S-OFF / root methods" thread in development, second post. It involves flashing a RUU in hboot, which you may be able to do. And, I'm not sure, but it could fix any partition error if cache somehow got corrupted.
What does hboot say? Should say unlocked and S-ON if you're HTC unlocked.

Thanks for the tips.
When doing this, when I get to the section where 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img', it hangs at writing 'recovery' and doesn't do anything.
Further update...
If I use 'Fastboot boot recovery.img' instead of 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' then 4ext loads, however it tells me:
ATTN: recovery is in safe mode. this is because the following partition is not accessible: "cache". Please enter the wipe menu and wipe cache! If you changes hboot you should choose to format all partitions (except sdcard).
If I follow either of those instructions and fastboot boot into 4ext it gives me the same 'safe mode' error every time.
It seems your Dinc2 is security locked, S-ON, you need a XTC clip to S-OFF your Dinc2
Before I seek out an XTC clip I would like to try using a signed version of PG32IMG.zip, however I haven't been able to locate one for the 2.3.4 firmware. Most resources point back to this link at rootzwiki rootzwiki.com/topic/18873-ruu-htc-incredible-2-signed-ruus-pg32imgzip/ but the link to the downloads is broken.
Can anyone point me to a valid download for a signed version of PG32IMG?
thanks

Have you tried running "factory reset" from the hboot menu?
Your phone seems to have partition errors (probably why it hung on the HTC screen after you unlocked, and why cache is giving you errors). I'm not sure if an RUU will wipe/re-write your partitions for you, or if it could error and brick the phone. I know that flashing a RUU is delicate, and errors while doing that can brick the phone. So, the only reason I'd flash a RUU at this point you're at is if you think you're already bricked and want to try something to fix it.
If you remember what Verizon version you had before you unlocked, you could find the stock rom, extract the boot.img into your android directory, and try flashing that in fastboot using "fastboot flash boot boot.img". That might get you booted in your current rom. Try this stock ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599767 In case you didn't know, when you're HTCDev unlocked, you have to flash boot.img every time you flash a ROM.
When I went from HTCDev Unlocked to S-OFF, all I did was flash an RUU and then run revolutionary. RUU_Vivo_W_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.18.605.3_Ra dio_1.09.01.0622_NV_VZW1.92_release_199487_si.zip
Which can be found in the "Comprehensive S-OFF/Root Methods" thread in development.
Download the first link under "Tacoroot" and extract the RUU zip file. It goes on the root of your SD card, and you rename it "PG32IMG.zip". Then, you have to go to fastboot (the bootloader) and type in the adb command "fastboot oem lock". After that, select "bootloader" and it should scan for the PG32IMG.zip and ask if you want to flash. If it runs correctly you should be on hboot version .97 with a stock ROM, and you can run revolutionary.
Did you ever type the command "fastboot oem unlock" at any point in the HTCDev unlock process? If so, you may not be able to run that RUU.

I cannot upgrade to a newer version of Clockworkmod recovery !
I have tried everything, fastboot flash returns failed signature verification, rom manger also cannot update to a newer version.
Also tried Unrevoked but it fails.
the phone is rooted and I have flashed several ROMs in the past without any problem.
Any idea?
Fastboot flash doesn't return verification failed error.
You need to be s-off to change recover using fastboot. Before you do anything, read some tutorials, you need to differentiate among most basic terms.

< waiting for device >
sending 'recovery' (3256 KB)... OKAY [ 0.468s]
writing 'recovery'... INFOsignature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 0.952s
I have tried to flash clockworkmod 5 and also tried the touch version, but with no luck.
Maybe the S-OFF is messed up, but only if rom manager did something wrong, because last time when I have upgraded the recovery it was from ROM Manager.
Fail on my part...
That seems like there is no device tho. My money is on broken drivers. There is a guide how to do in development so search for it as it works 100%.
unrevoked connects to phone, sends the file to phone then at the end it fails.
I have tried revolutionary for S-OFF the program connects to phone then displays the phone serial number, asks for the key then after I enter the key, the connection is lost.
So I really don't know what to do anymore, and I need a newer recovery since the one which I have does not have options to partition the SD Card and ICS is eating a lot of memory without SDExt.
The phone is ok, it's not broken, I flash every 2-3 days a newer ICS ROM and it works.
why dont you try a different recovery.i have been using ext4 recovery for a while and imo it is way better than cwm....
I use clockworkmod because I have purchased the ROM manager tool and it works with their recovery.
I finally managed to flash a newer clockworkmod recovery and very strange after reboot it has reverted back to the old 2.5.0.7 version !!! At least I was able to partition my sd-ext...
I have tried the boot CD with alpha-rev it freezes in the final stage, but after that I was able to flash the new recovery using the recovery itself, but as I said after reboot the new recovery has gone !
Now I have tried to flash again a newer recovery from ROM manager it says it finished successful, but the recovery still remains 2.5.0.7

Because all you are doing is a fake flash. You need to flash it from fastboot in order to stick.
Ditch the Rom manager. That pos app is guilty of more usb bricks than most of us can count.
And how can I flash it from HBOOT ?

You need to read ADB for dummies guide to gain knowledge how to set ADB up.
Then you go into hboot by pressing vol- and power button.
Select fastboot.
Download your recovery.img and place it in the same folder your fastboot.exe is, then type in cmd:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot erase cache.
Return to hboot and boot in the recovery.

Erklat, thanks for this - I have the same problem.
i have finally got round to get adb, etc, working..and it kinda works, except that when flash a newer version of CWM (v5.0.2) on fastboot it still doesn't work. I tried using the Rom manager, which failed straight away, and I followed your steps above. But still didn't work.
So my story's background:
I rooted my Desire with Unrevoked so I could install ICS (sandvold) - and it has been working beautifully. But now I want to create an ext3 partition and the GParted method is far too complex for me to follow through.
CWM i have installed doens't partition, and so I though I'd update the recovery tool so I could use it to partition.
Any suggestions on what I could do?

Do you get an error when you flash a new recovery via fastboot or does it say it successfully flashed the recovery.img file? If you didn't get an error, do you always go to Rom Manager to access recovery? If yes, I say ditch rom manager. Try vol down + power like on erklat's instruction, this time select Recovery. See if the recovery you flashed is booted.
If you are s-off it's better you flash 4ext recovery. It's by far the best recovery you can use for Desire.

I also tried flashing RA, just to see if it would work (and also heard its better). But nothing. It's quite bizarre.
My phone is not S-OFF - I used the HTC official software and I dont' think it does it - I have no problems in doing it if it will resolve this problem.
I have also tried this flashing using the terminal, Which I found in the Q&A's but i get several error messages, and then finally:
"error writing recovery: No space left on device"
So I uninstalled a couple of apps (freeing some 10mb+) but still the same issue.
As you are not s-off you can't flash recovery, get s-off and flash any you like

RA has not been maintained for quite some time. 4EXT is probably the best and it's developer is very devoted to his project.

theresa way to downgrade. check resources on my guide.
i had the same problem. s-off solved everything.
i had problems with s-off. i had ISC 4.0.3. and i couldn't get it to s-off and i installed some stable rom. cant remember which one, but i'm sure it was on of stable ones. and then tried to s-off again and it was over in few minutes.
and then i flashed recovery with adb
I have a Verizon Dinc2 given to me by a friend....I'm not a complete noob but not very familiar with this particular device...I know how to use adb and have rooted and modified several other models from the HTC lineup before
Here's the problem, the phone was apparently unlocked with HTCdev method, had clockworkmod recovery installed (v5.0.2.0) but then left with S-ON, no sd card and no ROM installed.
Every method I have found of rooting properly, or getting a new hboot on there, or downgrading or ANYTHING basically requires that you start with the phone booted, which I can't do because there is no ROM installed.
I have tried putting a ROM on an sd card and flashing from recovery, no dice.
I have tried flashing several different RUU (PD32img or whatever) from the bootloader, and I always get a 'bad image' or 'wrong image' message then nothing.
I have tried to perform a couple of downgrade methods thinking the RUU's included might install and help me out, and can't complete through adb because the phone isn't in the proper mode. or it will start a flash and give me an error of some kind.
I know if I could install a ROM, I could enable debugging, use charge only mode, even flash a different recovery, etc... but with no ROM, and no way to boot, I am at a loss.
Anyone know where I can go with this? the phone is pretty nice, and I would love to get it running, even just stock...Maybe somebody has a nand backup I could try running from CWM, or something along those lines?
The info I get from the bootloader is as follows:
***UNLOCKED***
VIVO_W XB SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.98.0000
RADIO-1.09.01.0312

Really hoping I can revive this incredible.
Got the phone in attempt to fix it, it's in a constant state of 'boot-loop syndrome'..
Can't go into recovery.. can't factory data reset.. all I get is the
....*vibrate*, white HTC incredible screen....*vibrate off*, etc. etc. etc.
The only thing that is working is hboot (as well as hboot usb when plugged into a pc).
But that's as far as I can get.. anything else I attempt to load from the hboot/bootloader it goes into a constant boot loop spasm.
The incredible is currently S-ON

I've tried numerous PB31IMG stock files in attempt to recover the system.
The system/sd card detect the files just fine and attempt to load them.
The PB31IMG at pvillcomp ( http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22 ) didn't work, too old
This one, however, does work (only one so far I've found that does)
http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.2/PB31IMG.zip
But while going through the installation process it fails at Radio_**
all other variables within the file (bootloader, system, recovery, etc) complete successfully.
Once all the components of the zip file are installed, it gives the message
partition update fail!

That sounds scary. I've heard that a failed radio flash is the only way to permenantly brick one of these phones.
Here's what I would try:
1. Update HBOOT to the latest, from here:
http://dinc.does-it.net/Hboots/Hboot_1.07/
2. Unlock the bootloader using htcdev (see cmlusco's or scotty's guides)
3. Flash a custom recovery using fastboot (I've used CWM and TWRP)
IF you can get all that to complete successfully, and can boot into recovery, you should then be able to get root adb access to the system. This will give you some more options, such as flashing an older RUU (again, see cmlusco's and scotty's guides for downgrading), and just maybe you'll be able to find something that works.

Thanks for the website, was looking for something like that
Anywho, tried to flash it in the bootloader, it seems to find it a file for which is proper but does not give me any option to update it.
It just says "looking for PB31IMG... then finds it, says checking PB31IMG...", then the prompt goes away.
I'm quite limited when it comes to knowledge on this stuff, but anyone think if I decompile the stock ruu (~180mb) PB31IMG.zip, and flashboot each part of the update separately it may work?
Hi all
DHD 2.35 GB
3.13.351.4
Used HTC hboot unlock
Used ace tool to root and flash cwm
So phone is hboot unlock rooted and have cwm.
Tried using hack kit to s-off but when it pushes the PD98IMG phone re boots into cwm.
Tried manually booting to hboot and it loads the PD98IMG but after loading says failed or wrong version.
Read somewhere that hack kit has to have locked hboot to work so tried the ace tool to re-lock hboot and that fails.
When it says phone will restart it restarts to cwm
Tried flashing a few roms as is using cwm (cm10.1, slimbean, viper)
cwm says the roms installed but either phone boots as normal stock 2.35 or hangs at htc screen
Luckily i did a full cwm backup so easy to restore if it doesnt boot.
IS THERE A METHOD OF FLASHING ROMS THAT DOESN'T NEED S-OFF?
IS THERE ANOTHER METHOD TO S-OFF
Any help greatly appreciated

It does not boot because you need to flash the custom rom boot.img in fastboot after flashing the rom in CWM.
Ok so this is what I did
In CWM factory reset, wipe cash, wipe dalviQ, wipe battery stats
CWM installed zip from card
chose cm-10.1-20130311-UNOFFICIAL-ace.zip
This completed in a couple of minutes no errors
back in hboot / fastboot
flashed boot.img from cm-10.1.... zip but get sig verify fail......
fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending boot 3824k
okay
writing boot
(bootloader) signature checking.....
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished
What an i doing wrong?

This is false. You can flash ROMs with S-On if you have an unlocked bootloader.
My mistake.
Stuuk, "the Bible" says: "the other way of gaining root is flashing custom ROM after unlocking bootloader."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168500
So, did you wipe the system and data after nandroid backup, and before flashing custom ROM?

Bananagronola was right
Even though hboot showed as unlocked it didnt act like it was.
I ran the htdev unlocker again then I was able to fastboot flash recovery 4ext (over cwm)
In the same session i was also able to fastboot flash a boot.img (which was failing previously)
So booted into 4ext recovery and flashed cm-10.1-20130311-UNOFFICIAL-ace and gapps again after wiping everything.
For good measure I fastboot flashed the boot.img again and hey presto everything works!!!
Well i say everything works however for some reason the touch screen seems a little unresponsive in this rom.
But now I know the procedure I'll be trying a few more roms.
Thanks for all the help

However, when I reboot, instead of stucked at the white htc screen, it shows different boot screen (instead of the white HTC screen), but the phone did not go further after an hour.
I also tried "fastboot flash boot ..." in combination of recovery flashing but none works.

i also got that same problem by using the wrong boot.img.
make sure you use the boot.img that is in your custom rom folder and then flash it (the rom) via recovery (i also think you have to reflash recovery to do this but i'm not sure, for me it has been a learn by your mistakes project).
Unlock bootloader again ..then flash boot image at bootloader then reboot normally ..

No worries on Me!
Hello to all developers,
Since I go throw this discussion I found out you people need some information regarding unlock boot loader.
I have literally no idea when I rooted my phone and install custom ROM and what is CWM. You guys at least knows it more than me,I'm sure but what i noticed is to unlock bootloader doesn't really require token code to unlock using htcdev.
As i mention above you may unlock bootloader via some program like i used it when these all words are completely new for me. I went through kingroot(dot)net, that site is in chinese so using translator i tried to understand the meaning out of it. Underneath that site once you scroll it down you'll find some various different icons for other site. From there I found to go through mgyun(dot)com download and install software. Don't worry its in Chinese but once you connect your phone it will display HTC G10(a9191) in other words desire HD/inspire 4g.
Kindly look throw all app you'll find "LOCK" kind of a icon. Click on it and check your phone it will display yes/no option choose yes and press power button to unlock BOOT LOADER.
NO NEED ANY SORT OF HTCDEV. As I said these words are couple of weeks ago totally new for me.I did that 20-30 times but I didn't have any idea what so ever that why its needed and what for.
Few things for S-OFF and S-ON
S-OFF you have all access because security is OFF
NO BOOT.IMG require here.
S-ON you have security ON
Always flash boot IMG using adb or using fast boot drivers.
Thanks.
