Hello! I am new to rooting, and I wanted to root my kindle fire 6.3.1. I have Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.6 and when I try to install the drivers (install_drivers.bat) the wizard for windows xp pops up. I click next, but then it says:
Driver Name Status
X Google, Inc. (WinUSB)... Install failed (Unsigned)
The X is red by the way. I don't know how to check the ADB Status either, so please help!

Try going to your devices and installing the existing drivers for your kindle. Then plug kindle back in and let it install the proper drivers. After run the install_drivers.bat
In the install_drivers.bat that comes with KFU (right click, select edit), there are two lines that say:

start .\drivers\dpinstXX.exe
(where 'XX' is either 32 or 64)
Find the one for your bit size and change it to say:
Code:
start .\drivers\dpinstXX.exe /lm
That will disable the signature checking and allow you to install the drivers.
Kfu 0.9.5 worked better for me. (Win7)

I'm currently trying to root my kindle with 6.2.2 with my windows XP Computer.
I've downloaded the most recent KFU and the 2 other files listed in the KFU post
KFU is currently located at c:\KFU
When I run the instal drivers.bat file It yells at me and tells me that the Google driver is unsigned. No problem, Plugged in the kindle and when the "install drivers" box came up I selected the C:\KFU\Drivers folder
Everything installed fine, When plugged in I get the USB Storage under USB devices and Anroid ADB Device under phones
when I run KFU it shows that ADB is offline
I've tried with the Mass storage stopped, still shows ADB offline.
Does anyone have experience getting KFU to work in XP?
Should I give up on the simple utility and do it from the CMD line with ADB? (I just feel safer having a script run becuase it gives less chance for error / skipped steps)
I've also tried on my mac, but sadly my older mac doesn't support KindleWater or ADB for that matter
PS as a background I have rooted 2 phones in the past and Custom ROM"d 1 of them.
My girl got a Kindle Fire and wants Jelly Bean on it. I plug it into the laptop, Windows start to look for drivers, can't find them. So, thru KFU I install the drivers, open KFU, device is not showing. I open adb, run adb devices, blank. Run adb usb devices,, device not found.
The kindle will say that its connected to the computer and I can transfer files. But windows will not show an external device is attached. So, I go to Device Manager, its an "unknown device". So I looked through post after post, finding out that I need to edit the adb_usb.ini file. Problem is, I can't get to it......
I'm not a noob when it comes to computers or android, but this has me lost......

I had same problem. Errore was plug first kindle then install kfu with drivers. Remove all drivers you installed. Now install drivers provided with kfu. Make sure SDK and java is ok. Then plug kindle.

smsrat84 - when you plug KF into USB and Windows starts to scream about new unrecognized device, choose an option to install drivers manually from a specified location, and choose {KFU_HOME}/drivers/kindle - KFU will see it after that. Then install FFF, TWRP with KFU and so forth.
Try using Linux (yes I said the dreaded 'L' word ) because apparently it's not as fiddly with drivers as Windows is.
Personally, I used Mac and it was plain sailing all the way. No drivers, everything just worked first time [Just make sure you're careful, nothing is foolproof ]

Hey, well now that my Kindle has had a charging problem for quite some time, I sent it out and got a new one for no charge. So now that I have received it, I'm trying to root it, and I notice that Kindle Fire Utility is not connecting to ADB, so I proceed to re-install the drivers. It worked fine before I updated to Windows 8 from Windows 7, but now it just plain won't install. I do have another computer I can use with Vista and have tried, and the drivers will install on, but it detects my Kindle as an Android ADB Interface, not a Kindle. I have installed the drivers multiple times. So my question is how can I get KFU working? Please respond ASAP. Thanks!
EDIT: Resolved with another computer by uninstalling driver software then reinstalling
For anyone wanting to know how to install unsigned drivers shift+ restart, then select troubleshoot, then advanced options, then startup settings, then restart. After reboot select f7 to disable driver signature enforcement it will reboot again, then simply just install the driver.

No comment on the win8 since I haven't had a chance even looking at it.
On the other computer, it seems the driver installed correctly except that a normally booted up KF should read Android Composite ADB Interface.
W8 and KF - ADB finally recognized it.
I finally got adb to recognize my Kindle Fire on Windows 8. Device Manager still thinks it's a Android ADB Device - but at least ADB works.
[DISCLAIMER - I'm not a windows guru, so anyone who is feel free to adjust, or comment on these instructions to make them better. This worked on my W8 computer - I won't guarentee that it will work on yours...not all W8 installations are the same!!]
Before you preform this - make sure you have the latest Google SDK installed. If you're not computer literate (meaning you can administer your own computer without help) then DON'T do this.
Here's what I did to make it work.
First you will need to set up W8 to install unsigned drivers as suggested by Thepooch in post #2 of this forum.
Windows Key + C - brings up charms
Shift + Restart from the power menu
Select Troubleshoot
Select Advanced Options
Select Startup settings
Select restart
When menu comes up after restart - select F7
W8 puts the Kindle at different addresses that W7, so you'll need to edit two files.
Plug in your Kindle to the computer. Open Device Manager under W8 (you need to be computer literate to complete this. You've been warned!)
If you're Kindle shows up as a Galaxy Nexus then uninstall the drivers. Make sure you're Kindle is identified as a Kindle in the build.prop file on the device. If not, just do a quick reinstall of the OS.zip file and that should reset it.
Plug in the Kindle to the computer - Device Manager should find it as a Kindle Fire
Now right click on the Kindle Fire (should have yellow exclamation marke), open the properties tab.
Click on the Details Tab, select Hardware ID's. The Hardware ID for the Kindle on W8 is different that W7! You need to edit two files to adjust the hardware ID's so ADB will find the Kindle.
Leave the Properties Windows Open.
Go to C:\Users\"Your user folder"\AppData\Local\Android\android-adk\extras\google\usb-driver\
Open android_winusb.inf and insert the following three lines under [Google.NTx86] and [Google.NTamd64]
;Kindle Fire
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_D002
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_D002&MI_01
VERY IMPORTANT: The VID_#### and the PID_#### should MATCH what is displayed in the open Properties windows - check and make sure these numbers match!! Your Hardware ID's could be different!!
Save this file.
Go to c:\users\"Your User Name"\.android
Open adb_usb.ini with notepad.
Key in 0×18D1 (This is the same number you used in the VID_#### and PID_#### from the properties window - make sure it matches!)
Now go back to the properties window.
Select the general tab
Select update driver ....
Select Browse my computer for driver software to locate the driver software manually.
browse to C:\Users\"Your user folder"\AppData\Local\Android\android-adk\extras\google\usb-driver\ - select ok and install the driver
W8 will give you a big, nasty security prompt (only if you've enabled installation of unsigned drivers) - just hit okay.
The driver should install and you should see the Kindle as an Android ADB device now.
Testing Kindle Fire adb USB driver
Bring up command prompt (CMD).
Type adb kill-server then enter.
Type adb devices then enter.
That’s it. You should see Kindle Fire as one of the devices.
You should now be able to use ADB to manage your Kindle.

Try this;
Download the Android SDK and unzip it and copy the 'adt-bundle-windows' folder to your documents folder
Navigate to Documents/adt-bundle-windows/sdk/tools and run the android app - this opens the android SDK manager.
Go to tools - Manage-addon-sites and select the User defined Sites tab. Click new and add the following url
http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml
Hit OK and close
Now scroll to the bottom on the SDK manager and under extras will be 2 kindle fire options 'kindle fire device definitions' and 'kindle fire USB driver' select both and install.
Now close the SDK manager.
If you have previously used your kindle on your PC, plug it in and go to device manager and un-install the drivers for it - now unplug it.
Navigate to \Documents\adt-bundle-windows\sdk\extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and install the kindle USB drivers
Now add the location of the ADB.exe file to your path
You should now be able to plug in your kindle and execute adb devices and see your kindle - that means your good to go.

I downloaded the SDK and it didn't have a 'adt bundle' in the contents but i ran sdk manager and I had already added the link you mentioned and I also had already added the extras you mentioned earlier from a article I read and Nothing so I stumbled across this article and it had a few extra steps so I thought to give it a try only problem is, When I go to my device manager to uninstall the kindle drivers i don't have that option to uninstall a 'kindle' driver rite below it there's a android adb interface and i have the option there to uninstall but before I did so I wanted to post here what's going on with me. I wonder if it worked for the person who started the post?

Are you using the adb from the latest sdk?
I couldn't get adb to recognise my kf2 until I used the latest adb.exe
I rooted my both kindle´s before a week.
no idea why the other driver did not work.
The Driver from http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml work perfectly.
I had this same issue until I updated the driver with the latest. I don't have it in front of me, but when I looked at it, it's dated approx Dec 8th 2012 in Device Manager. Update the driver to the latest and you should be good to go.
know that if you install the drivers after connect your kindle it can mess it up, if you go into device manager and uninstall the drivers after you've disconnected you're kindle and install them then reconnect it, it should work.

Powerpoint is so right here, If you use any linux distribution, it's going to be much easier to get your kindle connected to adb.
Do we even have a q&a or general section for this device? Bought, rooted and turned into a tablet today

That must have been my problem. I ended up moving to my Xubuntu machine to get it to work. I think my adb was from November,

This probly isnt the right place for this but I have been to so many areas and so many websites that I am crosseyed now. I managed to root my kindle the other day and was attempting to install a mod on it. At this point I cant even remember which site I was on to share the steps I took. Needless to say, I messed up and now the kindle boots to to the logo for a few seconds, shuts off and boots back to the logo, over and over. I'm not very good at all this but not completely stupid either. I'm simply ready to pull my hair out. I have installed Android SDK and am having trouble getting the correct drivers for my kindle apparently. Its a kindle fire hd 2012. I went through all the trouble of installing the sdk and got to the part with the addons and manually putting in the amazon site, only to read on and discover its no longer supported so I can not get the different kindle fire definitions. In my device manager, it shows kindle fire and expanded shows Android ADB Interface (no composite.. does it matter?). I have verified that abd is installed and working, but doing a devices command, doesnt show any devices. It executes without errors, just doesnt list anything. I have a fastboot cable and it does currently say Fastboot on the kindle when I plug it in.. thats all it says tho, is it supposed to go any further then those words?
I have tried so many suggestions on here to get it to see my kindle to no avail. I follow tutorials, that seem to link to other tutorials because the previous ones had prerequisites and THOSE have links for downloads that no longer work and so I do a side load of a webpage trying to find the missing download I need and THOSE pages end up leading me somewhere else or going a different route then the previous tutorial took me and I just CAN'T get anywhere with this! It shouldnt be this hard (and I'm venting at this point so I apologize). Does anyone have an UPDATED (2018) tutorial for getting my kindle back to where it will boot up... assuming my computer will ever see it (windows 7 btw). Thanks in advance.

Having a bit of trouble with the Kindle Fire Drivers.
First time rooting anything so bear with me.
I downloaded the KFU utility and used the install drivers on that.
When i ran the utility it saiid that ADB status is Offline.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling and rebooting. Enabled ADB on the Kindle (STOCK FIRMWARE).
Tried to install manually by selecting "Android Phone" - But i dont get an option for Android Phone.
At the moment my Kindle is listed under " Portable Devices" AND under "Other Devices" (other devices with a yellow exclamation mark next to it).
Any ideas what i can do?

Is your kindle 1st gen? System version 6.3.1? If it is it still isnt that uncommon to have issues with driver install. What computer operating system are you using. If your on windows 8 you need to go through selective startup and disable driver signature verification. Windows 7 is about the easiest. Look for samsung adb driver if you had previously installed those before for a samsung device or kies. If you are not system version 6.3.1 you're using the wrong driver and it very likely will not show as android phone even if you're using the correct driver and kfu is useless for rooting you're device. Not to mention dangerous.
