MODS: if this is inappropriate for Dev section, please move to General.
Those wishing to experience the Ubuntu for Phones developer preview on their Sprint Nexus S 4G can do so. I just installed it and it is running (kinda slowly). The method I used is basically the same as used by kdb424 to get the preview on his Sprint Galaxy Nexus (using GSM Galaxy Nexus image). See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159832.
I won't post any binaries or links here because those belong to woorim98 in the Nexus S Android Development thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163085).
WARNING: I will not be held responsible if you kill your phone. Always make a Nandroid Backup before attempting to flash any new operating system. If you try this you will be installing binary code intended for a similar BUT DIFFERENT phone from yours. It might work and it might not.
Here's what I did to install it on Nexus S 4G. The Nexus S Ubuntu preview consists of 3 files:
ubuntuns-2.zip
ubuntu-preinstall.zip
ubuntu-rootfs.tar.gz
(as I said, you can get them at woorim98's thread).
ubuntuns-2.zip contains:
boot.img
system\
META-INF \ com \ google \ android \ updater-script
Updater-script is a text file containing instructions for the install. The very first line of updater-script defines what phone hardware to install to:
Code:
assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "crespo" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "crespo");
The proper thing to do is to change crespo to crespo4g, the device ID for our phone. For some reason, that didn't work for me. Installing through TWRP produced an error. The next (more dangerous) thing to do is to comment out the line altogether (put a # before it). That eliminates the hardware check altogether. When I did this, I got a successful install.
On reboot, after a few minutes, I got the Ubuntu welcome screen.

Ubuntu for Phones is a very early developer preview and hardly usable in any meaningful way. I will not be updating this thread with any new information because, frankly, Ubuntu is not ready for prime time. I'll be restoring my Android ROM after a few hours.
Just wanted to let you all know that it's possible to try it out on a Nexus S 4G.

It is about two steps away from a PowerPoint presentation, but some stuff does work. Both front and back cameras work. Once you get wifi set up (pull down the notification bar while touching -exactly- the wifi icon), web services work. It took me a long while to find the address bar for the browser (swipe UP from the bottom!).
But the preloaded contacts, music, appointiments are all fake Canonical data. There's not even a clock or calendar app.
I did log into my gmail account and I assume you could log in to facebook and twitter accounts: since they are all web services.
But on our hardware it is VERY SLOW!!

If you aren't comfortable with wiping, flashing, or
getting your Xoom out of a tuff spot THIS IS NOT FOR YOU.
I wiped because I had to in order to test the ROM. It may work fine without
but I wouldn't bet on it. So if you can't afford to wipe your device then I
would not attempt to flash this.

Actually I don't mind the 1% battery I just hated the battery icons used in the base. If/when I find some that I like I will include it. I was thinking about using the ones from my phone but they need rotated. Thats about 200 graphics so its on hold for now.

I got it as well and I noticed following difference:
All my music was gone and my phone asked me to synchronise with zune.
Same for my pictures and videos. All was gone; nothing was left on my phone.
//edit: unfortunately I have forgotten to backup my data. Some of the pics I can't get back anymore. What a pity. But honestly, I did not expect that would happen when I just load the updated HTC HUB via Market Place.
What can I say..? Would it be possible to release an update which makes me love my phone more?
P.S. Sorry, I don't like off-topic and since years I am just a member who is following your postings and take benefit of your experience, because I don't like to repeat what 100 other users have said before, but now I am really fed up with this stupid OS on my phone.
Further I thought I could save my first post for something greater than that

It's very unlikely that an app update caused this trouble. I have had these issues several times, but not due to updates (be they simple app or complete OS updates) but due to a hardware failure on my device.
I never heard that update did something like this no matter what OS it is!!!
perhaps the update included tagging location places?
For the first time it shows University at Buffalo as my location
Normally it just showed Buffalo

Still gotta DL the WHOLE app (eg. a 1GB game update) instead of just the new/replaced files that Google announced will be launched with the JB release.
Smart Update: http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/17/3248874/google-play-store-smart-updates-enabled
Anyone know what going on with that?
I don't know the technical details of the technology, but from what I read about it I assume it only works for changes in the APK. Games often contain a lot of graphic data, which probably renders this technique kinda useless
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I'm pretty sure they are already enabled but they still show as if you are downloading the entire file. So there is no way to know when they are put to use and how big the apk diff files are.
Busybox free uses it..and facebook 1.9.9 update too...
With the last updates it was finished within seconds..the download....
Interesting. So how does Google select which apps start using it? Or is it some kinda automated update adding apps to its list for Smart Update support?
Noo the devs of the apps must build it in aka support it

I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. Google automatically enables smart app updates for all (I presume) apps. This was said at the I/O conference that developers didn't need to do anything and personally I haven't seen any new API calls nor manifest lines that I need to add.

FWIW, I updated Dead Trigger the other day and it only downloaded around 500k of updated data... so, yea, it does work for games as well.
Again, it depends on the APK and the changes involved.
Something I noticed the other day: the progress bar on the Play Store was slow, and would cut off somewhere in the middle just before updating. If you want to see the real update progress, look in the notification shade.

I think its an switch that the dev must activate to use it
Yes..u r ri8...notification bar shows correct % of update where as progress bar shows size of kbs downloaded...

Yes, I have noticed this also recently. So I guess it was a slow rollout.
I have encountered several updates that use this. I remember Google saying that it is something that will happen automatically and not something that will require any changes on the part of the developers

I know. This question was asked a couple of weeks ago. I see that it working more often these day, so I guess a MOD can lock this up to prevent more replies. Th for the earlier info guy! :good:
Weird thing i found is how invisible this release from WPH is.
The Notification Center, the dream of every Windows Phone is forgotten !
I tested the app on my own phone... it doesn't work. OK, but still i found absolutely no thread about this Xap, i think it could be developped if known better (jaxbot has retired from the WP7 scene i think, so i guess he won't do it. We can be grateful for this very good start)

Here is his the presentation of the app found i here
There's been more opposition for this project than with... well, I tried to come up with a good joke, but let's cut to the chase.
I've decided to release a rewrite I made of Notifications. It only works on full unlocked devices. Here's the details:
This app caches the push notifications sent to your phone. So if someone mentions you on Twitter, and you miss the toast, it will appear in Notifications.
This app does not cache non-push messages, such as texts, emails, calls, etc.
Complete rewrite; it works differently than the original Notifications app. No PC tether, no external servers, etc.
The NC service runs on the device. This is why you need your device to be full unlocked.
I'll repeat that. It must be full unlocked, meaning you must be able to run EXE programs on it.
The setup is simple. Download and install it to your device. Run the app, and it should take you to the setup page. Press install, then agree to the disclaimer. It will prompt you to reboot. Do so, and with any luck, it'll work.
I'm releasing it without support. Notifications works for some people, doesn't for others. The problem is likely to do with full unlocking. If you have a custom ROM that is fully unlocked, it should work. As for EXE unlocking rooted devices, it may be hit or miss. We'll see on that.
The source is available on Github. Download the XAP here: ncroot1.xap. If you didn't read anything else: You need a policy unlocked or full unlocked device. If your device is not full unlocked, read the instructions appended below.
Also, if you want to test if it works, install SimplePush. It'll send a quick toast to your device.
Other than that, enjoy. I'm curious to see what the feedback is, and whether or not it works in certain scenarios. I don't know what the demand is to keep working on it, but here it is, and with that, enjoy.
Update: Should now work on interop-unlocked devices, provided you use WP7 Root Tools. To do this, install the XAP, mark it as "Trusted", run Notifications, click Install, and reboot your phone. Presto. Do give feedback on whether or not this works.

It's just a http server written using .Net (not silverlight), that listens for every push notification. But I really don't know what we can develop in this application. Any idea?
well personnaly i don't like the idea to have notification push making my phone ring every minuts (if i'm active on facebook or twitter).
So i use snotify to silence the notifications. This app would be ideal to tell me what did i miss on what app.
That's an exemple for one use, but i'm sure there is many others.
Actualy for twitter, my dream would be an app that puts in cache every tweets i missed (or the number of tweet i missed, even if i'm not mentionned, or every tweet from some selected profiles) so i would know if its worth opening the app or no (instead of checkin every 10 mins if there's something interesting) but we're maybe out of subject !
Any idear why it wouldn't work on my device btw ? I am full unlocked (septvies's devbuild_8862 1.5) on samsung Omnia 7

Nope! A no go with custom ROMs.
ATT Note 8.0 has locked boot loader and will brick if you install an unsigned ROM.
This is very disappointing... So I'm stuck?

IMO the samsung ROM is good. Just a wee behind. One thing you have on your side is rooting.
Once rooted, you can use framework mods to enhance the features.
I tested Civato's ROM and Kernel. Found it good but lacks supporting 64GB SD cards with Exfat.
Had way too many issues with Fat32 to call it worth while. Speed was good, but I realized after letting myself get use to the OEM ROM, there was not much difference.
If anything I recommend getting Solid Explorer Pro and Titanium Backup Pro..., they are worth their price on Google.
I removed all the apps that I can get on Google Play most of them are Google apps, but there is a few that you can obtain.
Once I removed all the Google apps... kept play store, I installed what I wanted. Don't bother with Google Music Player, it will run even when you reboot.
I kept Samsung Keyboard, and found it better than SwiftKey and Swipe Keyboard. As it has quite a bit of features you would not expect in a stock keyboard.
Setup my voice and language to be Ivona UK Welsh English, it is the best sounding of the English language. Google is setup to be the voice recognition.
My Samsung voice will be Ivona, and any Google voice in Google Now will be Google.
I setup a number of things with the framework mods, so it will take some time booting to completely load HD Widgets, if you choose to go that route.
Once ATT releases 4.4.3 in April, I may hold off until Xposed Framework gets a major overhall for 4.4.x.
I recommend the non framework version of Ghost Hide Root, with plugin. There is a framework version, but it does not work well with Samsung ROM.
Startup manager also is a good framework app, but there is a paid app that goes even further... I kept the Xposed app because it was smaller.
Don't bother with Power / battery apps... they tend to hog memory, and don't do much better than having your tablet do power saving mode when browsing or reading.
I keep WIFI and Power save mode on all the time. Yet to find a real issue with speed. Able to watch streamed movies and Miracast without hicups.
Oh by the way... I dropped Greenify as well.. seems to take up a lot of memory. I just stop some apps that allow not to be started during boot. Be careful, as some are part of the OS. I stopped All email apps, this way when I am wanting email I just open them. Also you can manually sync if you chose to. Though it can be annoying if you open mail for the first part of the day and find 40 emails waiting. On vibrate or notification sound it can be a bit annoying.
