I've found this in many other forums, but can't seem to find any threads in here.
Anyway, here's a list of threads I found from other forums and I'm wondering if it's also applicable to DHD.
If it's applicable, I can just follow these lists, or should I be careful? I assume if it's required to run in other phones, it's probably required to run in DHD as well. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I intend to just follow these lists and selective remove some of them.

Appreciate any input! Thanks!
You can always dirty reflash if you delete something necessary. That XDA thread looks about right.

ok... not sure if this should go here or further up the XDA Tree.
I like this place but as someone that hasn't rooted and dont really plan to just yet.. the current forum structure is hard to see if an app/theme etc require ROOT or not.
Also the DEV forum is exception hard to follow.. especially with the long subject lines.
It would be nice in the DEV forum to be split into MODS, ROMS, RADIO, UTILS etc, maybe even a RELEASE only MODs, so seperate
the beta mods from the Final mods.
APPS/THEME forum could have a ROOT sub forum with any app/theme/whatever that will only work if you have ROOT.
you do see quite a few posts with someone asking "if Root is required" atleast this way we would know.
only a suggestion and i guess most on XDA are more likely to ROOT than say other Desire forums.
This has been raised before, and xda likes to keep all devices to the standard layout. As such, subforums don't happen, as a rule.
The reason is that it takes too many clicks to find anything. If I come over to desire forum to check for posts wrongly made in development, it's 2 clicks (or 1 if you go direct to dev from homepage). To then be faced with further categories and choices would be confusing for many.
Tbh, if you are on xda, it is usually presumed (at least in my experience) that you are rooted and familiar with flashing a ROM. Guides are available to get you to this stage.
But there's not much here not requiring root to be honest. Anything you flash needs a custom recovery flashed, and therefore root to do so.
Apps or themes in zip format to be flashed need root, and anything delving into the system or hardware needs root, as does anything trying to write to /system.
So yes, it has been raised, but no it's not something likely to happen. Get stuck in, look at rooting if custom ROMs appeal etc, and then it won't matter if something requires root or not
Oh, regarding these other suggestions about radios etc, that is the purpose of the wiki.
Perhaps a sticky wiki list could be set up for such things?
ta for the reply.. and yes i do agree, if you are here you more likely to be ROOTed or about to be
there some nice MODs but far to many mix in with betas/RC etc so it can get quite overwhelming to even picking 1.
I know this is a noob question, but what are the main advantages of rooting my phone? and what kinds of things can i do with a rooted phone?
I just upgraded to Gingerbread using the RUU , and i was thinking about using Gingerbreak
You see the development thread?
With root (+ENG & Radio S-OFF) you can do ALL (ROMs, Radio's, Kernels, RILs, Updates, Improve everything) that.
Without Root you can't do any of it.

WITH superuser permissions you can do a lot of things:
1-use apk´s that you can´t use without root access
2-flash roms
3-do s & eng - off for flash new basebands
4-flash new kernels and do overclock or underclock (for example, set up the speed of the processor)
5-change your screensplash, your boot animation, power off animation...
resumed: you have access to IMPROVE your device
you can do more things that i do not write...sure
Basically Root allows you to access all the underlying files, as administrator, on your phone, so what you can achieve is limited only by your skill not the software. IMHO the biggest reason for root is the ability to carry out a proper backup, after that the choice is yours.

Any suggestions?

Is there an official sticky for this question on XDA? Seems like many new users ask this.

Maybe a daft answer but it's true: It's a bit of a dirty hack and will often leave all manner of strangeness floating about. Once you get around to wiping everything and putting the ROM you want on (a reboot will probably solve it) then all will be well.
Whilst you're going through the process expect more of this.
Best guess for your particular example is just the retries without rebooting.

Have to say I disagree about putting a sticky for that.
1. The site tries to limit the number of stickies.
2. Where would it go?
3. Who would look?
4. Who would find it?
5. The question has been asked and answered SOOOOO many times already that it would be easier to find one of those (search results are date ordered) than to find the sticky (trust me, I just tried).
(I've not asked the questions for answers by the way, I know the answers. Just there as a point.)

If I knew the url to the sticky, I'd post that as a reply early in the thread. The sticky could contain a moderated list of advantages/disadvantages to rooting a device.

Guess its again a n00b question, does rooting will brick the phone or void warranty...
Yes, you will void the warranty by rooting your phone and being bricked is something if you does not follow the procedures correctly.
Greetings
I am aware there's threads about this, but I have searched a lot around the web, and there's many different replies to this.
I wish to root my Wildfire, running 2.2.1 with 1.01.0001. I want a more smooth-running rom than the stock, and would highly appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction
I don't know if it happens automatically, but would also like to have Livewallpapers enabled.
I'm aware there's always some kind of risk when doing such things, but I rather ask here as it seems like the best site for it!

You are correct, there are millions of guides. Any of them are fine to use, but you need to read up, loads. Learn what you are doing.
Visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396
It has everything, well nearly everything you need to know about rooting. Read it ALL. Also search 'how to root wildfire' in google and read some guides. Problems only ususally occur if you dont follow the procedure correctly.
Learn the terms that people use, for example, what HBOOT is, how to access it, what a kernal and radio do, what recovery is, how to flash, what a ROM is. If you dont know what i'm on about, find out, because you will need to know.
In regards to ROMS, look for something that suits you, try different ones until you find one you like because each offer different features and styles.
Popular ROMs are Cyanogenmod 7, Rempuzzle and DKs ROM. But you can modify any part of them
Its all part of the fun of rooting.
Good luck in your quest for root access!
that's the specs of my wildfire and your lucky because it's easy to root !
these video help me to S-off first, trust me, it works on a wildfire -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvg0i8in96M, thats your first step in rooting..
then you can also view this link for the succeeding steps (never mind the downgrading step).. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
do it on your own risk
Hi,
I wonder what are the initial suggested steps, and/or required order that they happen, after receiving my new gs3 from att/bb. In particular, any step/OTA that should be AVOIDED for 'full' functionality / rootability / unlockability? Anything done that could void warranty?
0) disable some crapware from ATT/Samsung
1) put in that magic code to sim unlock (risk free anyways?)
2) OTA to JB? (risk losing free tethering?)
3) I'd like to minimize time on this initially, but shall I root/unlock anyway in case future ota kills this capability? (and how about warranty?)
I'll read through the forum, but you guys has been amazing to provide soooo many tips on this device, and I feel overwhelmed
Thanks.

Yeah......
Each and every one of these questions are already answered. Most of the answers you are looking for are even topics of posts that are stickied. Try searching. Or go into the General Info thread and just look at the top 10 or so posts. If you have a specific question on the process, we can help, but I doubt that anyone is going to answer all of your questions here. Mostly because there are no easy answers and each recommendation will come with some caveats, all of which are listed in their respective threads. Good luck.

Thanks. You are right. I'll summarize what I do later.
Btw, I suppose there is no big NO NO about this device in terms of how it is set up. For example, for some android device, getting OTA is the end of day for some key functionality such as unlock/root. I don't find those problems relevant for gs3 by reading around. Please correct me if wrong.
I'd take it out of the box...

did the following:
1) easy root
2) install recovery
3) backup using recovery
4) flash Canadian ROM + desirable modem (so google voice call log works ok)
5) disable not useful apps from Samsung
6) install apps
7) check auto updates/notifications/sync settings for apps
8) backup using recovery
I'm running cyanogen and I can't access the play store.

Flash gapps. Usually linked in the ROM thread's OP (there are several CMs for the DHD and I don't know which one you're referring to). Please make sure you read OPs and other documentation. Not reading documentation when rooting or flashing can easily lead to a brick. Further, no one is going to hold your hand through these processes; it's no one's phone, and therefore no one's responsibility, but yours. So from the answers you've asked and I've answered, I strongly recommend that you be a little more thorough in your readings.
