WIFI battery drain depending on the router settings - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It is really interesting to find that on some routers, the over night wifi on battery drain is around 3%, but on some other routers that's the hourly drain. I tried to alter the router settings, and it did help.
I switched the channel from 11 to 6, also I changed the security mode from WPA+AES to WPA2+AES, then the drain is significantly reduced. I am not sure what helped, and I could not test options one by one b/c the router is shared by many others...
Is there any theoretical justification to this difference? I heard that channel 11 is disturbed by phone signal, so that could be one thing. Would appreciate for any input! Thanks!

Does WIFI use power if its not connected?

I See my wifi has used 30% of my battery but ive been on 3G all day, does it drain the battery searching for networks?
It does use some power when searching for networks. There is probably an APP or settings that you can change to set the Freq of checks maybe. Or you can just turn of the Wifi radio when you know your not going to use it.

Yes it uses a lot of power if its regularly searching for networks. Especially if you're moving around and seeing dozens of WiFi spots. Just turn off WiFi when not in use, simple as that.
A lot of custom ROMs have less aggressive Wifi seeking intervals. You can usually set it manually with ease too. Lots of apps out there if you don't want to do it manually.
All that was said is true, but still I find that 30% usage for Wifi just for searching nearby networks is a little too much...
Although I haven't got anything to compare with, I always turn wifi off if I'm not using it during long periods.
Regards
I turn wifi off when it is not needed and battery life goes from one to two days.

I've been using Tasker to turn wifi on at home/work and off when I'm elsewhere. It's using cell towers to determine location, so hopefully it won't impact the battery much.
I leave wifi on 24/7, today it has used 2% of the 60% battery i've used.
I travel through london so I assume it is constantly finding new wifi signals.

Y5 Battery Saver .. on the market, free. Turns on/off Wifi based on known networks and cells in the area of the AP.

I leave wifi on all the time as well, and I also only have used 2% of the 70-80% battery I used up already.
Try going into wifi settings, then advanced wifi settings, then turn off the new wifi network available notification option.
This increased my battery life slightly.

Y5 - Battery Saver helps out tremendously! I barely ever use more than 2% when home all day...although that may be a bug but I started a thread for that already.

That 30% displayed can be deceptive since it's based on the amount of battery discharged and not entire battery capacity.
Well wifi, when on is looking to connect to known networks. If the signal is weak it will disconnect and connect to another network near by if there is that has better signal. This process does use some battery. The biggest drain will occur when you are actively using wifi, that is when you download or upload. So the best way to save battery, is to close wifi when not needed. If however you want wifi you can set it to never sleep. This way even if the screen goes off wifi will be connected and your device wont use the 3G which is way more power hungry.

[Q] Certain WiFi network draining battery

Hey! I have a battery drainage problem. My batter goes down really, really fast when I connect to my WiFi network at home. This happens only with my WiFi at home, after I changed the router to a new one. This did not happen with the previous router. I DO NOT experience such drastic battery drain on any other WiFi networks. This occurs on both my SGS2 and SGS3. This is clearly not an issue with my phone or android version but the WiFi router. Could you give me some troubleshooting ideas what I could do/test with my router (maybe it's a certain feature that drains the battery) to reduce the battery drain? Maybe there's some utility for android to help me see what's going on? I suppose my router somehow stops android from going into deep sleep but that's just a wild guess.

Check for noise on the channel you are using. If there are a lot of networks in your area that are on or close to your channel it is hard for your device to keep connected through all of the noise and will cause a heavier battery drain. If you can find a clear Channel near the beginning or end of the spectrum you are better off as there is less bleed over. Also make sure your router is set for g for sure and n in auto. Don't force a specific band. They will connect the fastest way that they can both talk to each other.

I set my router to automatic 802.11 n or g and I choosed the best channel avaible, which in wifi analyzer has about 8 out of 10 stars. We'll see if it changes anything.
Is there a tool that can help me make sure wether my phone goes into deep sleep or not?
My S3 does drain on certain Wi-Fi networks as well, while on other networks it is functioning normally. I haven't been able to find any solution...
Here is my thread, it may give you a clue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1829677

Something thats often overlooked is newer routers function on the 802.11 *N* networks rather than the older A, B or G bands.
This, from my knowledge offers higher data output and transfer rates, which in turn means that your phone could and most likely is processing higher amounts of data in a shorter amount of time which could very well cause high battery drain.
I would try switching to the G band if you don't mind losing a small amount of bandwith.
Thanks for the replies. I set my router to work only in 802.11g mode and I'll install BetterBatteryStats to see what's going on. I doubt it'll help but I have nothing to loose...

T210 WiFi problem

Hello all. Hope someone can help me. I have 3 pieces of T210. I have tried 4.2.2, 4.4.2 and 3 custom firmware. Im very surprised because the wifi signal is not stable even if im 1 meter far from wifi router. Tried to many kind of routers, Mikrotik, ubiquiti, cisco. Another problem am facing is the WDS option (roaming). when im on a WDS network (2 or more routers) the tabs need to many time to switch at the best signal about 15-20 sec or more. I have tried some apps saying improve wifi switch but no results. Can anyone tell me if there is any kind of modification to android to increase scanning time (or let it always on) even if the device is on standby. I don't care about battery life. Thank you for reading.

Wifi, BT and poor coverage drain my battery

Hi, I have the nexus 5x since Oct 2016.
With wifi, BT or poor coverage, y consumption is high. Minimum of 1,5%/hour. With mobile data 0,2%/hour. Perhaps with poor coverage is normal, but I don't understand why it happens with Wifi (At home (2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz) and at work (5Ghz)). I have tested multiples cases.
I have had 7.0 (stock), 7.1(stock), 7.1.2 (Dev), without root and with root + (Franco kernel or ElementalX kernel) + naptime. I have desactivate Wifi scaning on location. I never see the flat line in battery graph with Wifi.
I use the app "gsam battery" to see the battery graph. The kernel and Android system are the first app suckers, I think it's normal. I don't see anthing unusual in battery graph. The mobile go to sleep mode correctly.
What would be the problem? What new tests I can do?
Thanks
Question: Are you using Project Fi, or any other carrier that allows for WiFi calling/texting?
To clarify: I don't think Project Fi is the culprit, but I may have a solution that I've been testing.
A common complaint that goes back to my N5 running Kit Kat. The fix was to force the device to only use 2.4Ghz Wifi, however since 7.0 Google has removed that option.
Changing router's or updating the router firmware has helped some in the past but not for me.
Does your device Doze properly on a mobile data connection also? And does wifi occasionally idle properly, say when switching back and forth between wifi and cell data? That's the case for me currently, and you know something's wrong when a 3G connection idles better than Wifi.
I'm not using Project Fi, or any other carrier that allows for WiFi calling. My carrier is vodafone, a normal carrier.
I have tested a router with 2.4Ghz only, but the problem persists.
Doze works correctly with mobile data connection and Wifi. I can see the mobile go to sleep mode correctly in both cases.
But in idle mode, wifi use a 1.5%/hour and mobile data 0.2%/hour, but I don't see nothings strange in the graphs or stadistics.
What I can I try?

Ya sounds exactly like the issue I was describing. The fix used to be to force the device to only pick up 2.4Ghz connections but Google took the option away ever since 7.0. Being on a network they only transmits 2.4Ghz doesn't help as the device is still listening to and picking up 5Ghz signals.
There is no known fix that I'm aware of. I don't think Google considers it their problem, they would likely say it's a router compatibility issue and tell us to upgrade our router firmware.

Oreo 8.0/8.1 WiFi battery drain overnight

Hello guys. I suppose I'm not alone in this. My phone losses over 20% every night when connected to wifi network. I tested with wifi off and mobile data (4g) on, and it losses only 4%. Drain is not caused by any apps on my phone, and my wakelocks are ok(tested by GSam Battery Monitor and Wakelok detector). Phone does go into Dose mode overnight. After long period of testing and searching internet I did full wipe data/cache and install stock rom from oneplus site, and install just a few apps from playstore. It was disappointing when wifi drain continued after all I did. Also, when I turn on airplane mode, phone losses 2% overnight, so my conclusion is that wifi causes drain. If you guys have some advice for me, it would be helpful. Thank you!
Same issue here. I have tried everything (clean installs... Formatting data... Multiple roms and firmwares etc)
This is with scanning off and location off. It's Oreo related for sure as the issue dissappears when I flash Nougat

I hope there will be software update soon to handle this problem.
Hi
I have the Same issue on my Huawei p20 lite with Android 8.0. I think it's definitely the software
I noticed that the Wifi drain only appears if there are many wifi networks around.
At home we have 3 networks around and my phone doesnt lose any battery over night.
At my girlfriends place there are like 25 networks around and my phone loses >20% overnight.
Realy strange.
Maybe it has something to do with wifi scanning in the background?

Nah.. Think it's the wifi configuration on the router. When I switched ISPs, I was given a new router and the drain disappeared.
There have always been 4 wifi networks that show up on my devices.
