I'm using VJ's CM10.1 ROM, it's good , but has random crashing issue. VJ gave a solution is using EXT3 instead of EXT4.
My question is, is there any noticeable difference between EXT3 and EXT4, when using A2SD? I'm using a SanDisk C4 SD, going to replace it with a SanDisk C10 SD. Would it cover the difference?
It's a slight difference, not really a huge one when we're working with small amounts of storage.
The real difference comes when we have an ext partition of several TB, like at linux computers. That's where ext4 shows its real speed.

Thanks mate. I'll give EXT4 a try again, if still crash, I'll convert back to EXT3.
Really thanks.

MTD still only uses whatever internal memory the phone has.
I myself have a Class 10 MicroSD and half of it is EXT lol.
I also have a class 10 16g. Also is it better to have a large ext cause i tried data2ext with a 512mb ext and it wasn't very good
I am using the custom MTD myself with CM roms. This combination works well for me and is pretty much no-fuss to deal with.
However, if I were using a rom with a much larger footprint, like the CR_Mod-2.13, I would almost certainly go the apps2ext route...
what do you guys mean by class 10?
class 2= 2MB per sec
class 6= 6MB
class 10=10MB
Its the transfer rate of your sd card.
I think it pretty much relies on what you have, I plan on getting a class 10 SD card and use both MTD and Data2ext. Though currently I simply have MTD and put the leftover /system memory into data for now. Class 6 or above SD cards are better for data2ext, otherwise you'll lag your phone badly. I use CM-7 with a bunch of stuff removed and added Genius button, so I have 130 allocated to /system currently. if you use a Sense rom using MTD is almost pointless because it uses the full standard allocation of /system memory. Data2ext would be optimal at this point. So it boils down to what you are/plan on using and what you plan on doing with data.
How big should the EXT3 partition be for data2ext.

Hi,
first-time-rom-installer here so bare with me if I'm asking stupid questions
I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 so far with success, I've just finished partitioning the SD card but then I accidentally read something about ext4 would cause a shorter SD lifetime.
I'm not up to speed on all this stuff so logically I would go for ext4 (newest technology) but seen a lot of people saying there isn't noticable difference between ext3 and 4 is it really worth reducing SD lifetime?
Thx!
B
could you show us the info about ext 4 shortening lifetime
This shorting lifetime is a load of bull **** lol I have never seen one good evidence to this
I guess these are theories. I know leedroid has mentioned it.
Hello !
Sry for posting this here.. I'm still too new to post on dev threads =(
It's a question for ppl who use InsertCoin..
I got a 16gB microSD yesterday, so I want partition it for more ext..
But I saw this.. www[dot]miui-au[dot]com/faq/a2sd
If you go over 2Gb you may experience SD Card corruption and the Market will not operate properly!

And I saw somebody saying that the maximum ext that I should get is 1.5 gB at InsertCoin's main thread.. I'm not sure.. (I couldn't find that post anymore =\)
Does anyone know if there's a limit for MAX EXT using InsertCoin?
Thanks a lot !

I concur, more than that is a waste of space and decreases the r/w speed.
1 GB is recommended, in my case i use 2GB as i need space to sync my emails and other data. As rightly mentioned by paul.c more the space the more the time it takes to read and write and eventually the performance decreases. It also depends on what type of sdcard you are using, like class4, class 5 and so on.......
I had 1GB but wasn't enough 2GB will have a lot of problems, 1,4-1,5GB is max I recommend you for insertcoin.. I don't have any problems , 1.43GB ext

Sry for my noobility.. but why is that?
I mean.. flash memory allows random access, so why does it decreases r/w speed?

Thanks for your reply..
Could you point out what are the problems with 2GB ext?
And why do they happen?
Thanks !
I don't know why but Insertcoin became laggy as hell, never thought a class 6 16GB msd from Kingston could be the problem, but when i partioned it again i did just a little bit more than I had on my 8GB 1,3GB< and it helped a lot, Insertcoin is now working flawless.
Also another thing, idk if that's what they mean with sd card corruption but i could not move (almost) any files to my sd anymore since 2GB Ext. Got the whole time an error from windows, But why idk You should ask an expert I just don't recommend it

Ok, here is some geek talk!
EXT is really really slow! Why, becose its on your SD card, most SD cards used in phones are Class 2 cards, they have a read/write speed of 2MBs....
Your phones internal RAM/ROM have read speeds upto 1500MB/S and write speeds of about 500MB/S (depending on what type of chips used, PC RAM is much faster)
As you can see, there is a bit of a speed difference, even a Class 10 card is slow at 10MB/s
Also the SD card speeds are restricted by default, so if you are running a Class 2 card i would say you get about 1MB/s Read/Write speed (unless you use a SD card booster)
So the bigger the EXT, the slower the software is because it will take longer to read all the information, at 2GB of EXT (2048MB) takes the phone a long time to read going at less then 2MB/S on a class 2 card
What the title says basically. I'm looking to replace the 4gb class 2 sdhc card that came with the phone and get a bigger and faster one.
Depending on what the maximum size for an EXT partition is (I've read 1gb, other places said 2gb) I will chose between an 8gb and a 16gb one.
Coupled with that I have another question. I read that DATA2SD ROMs are generally slower that A2SD+ ones. If you were to compare an A2SD+ ROM using a class 2 sdhc card to a DATA2SD ROM using a class 6 card, which would you say is the fatest, most responsive?
Cheers.

Usually, size should be 2gb at max, 1gb is the general.
2GB is the limit for any rom before it starts to get a little unstable. 1GB is what everyone mainly uses but I have seen people with 1.5GB
IIRC by the guide I followed when I partitioned my card a long ago, it was recommended to have an ext of up to 1,4Gb.
1GB is ideal for the SD EXT
I have used 1gb also. (EXT4 partition)
Hi,
i have the problem of not enough memory OR a slow system. Currently im using a class6 16gb microsd with default app2sd from the rom (JB spazedog), but the app data fills up the internal memory nonetheless. If i move everything (not just apps) to the sd the system is getting slow and unresponsive.
It is worth getting a faster sd (class 10) and moving everything to sd or do i have no choice but keeping apps to a minimum?
Thx

No, but it would probably be worth to change to some rom which is not in beta and fits in /system small enough to have /data big enough to keep dalvik on nand and give more space for apps.
When using 6class and 10class i feel no significant changes in speed of app2sd area.
running speed test, write speed is usually about the same, read gives little higher results.

I'm using ICS Spazedog and DiskManager is working fine. Sometimes I have to switch pages when looking at app storage to get it to work. Maybe it didn't install properly, maybe your partitions need to be aligned, maybe the SD card needs to be reformatted. Could be quite a few things doing it.
Nope
Class 6 -> 10
If you use App2SD, definitely no.
If you use Data2SD, it is possible to see some differences.

In terms of memory, you have to keep in mind that using a2sd means sending the dalvik (if you choose so) ans the app to the sd-ext. While it allows to more internal space, it still decreases.
The sd-ext partition is practically limited to 1024mb by the desire inter storage size too, meaning that going over 1gb of sd-ext size wouldn't be better.
Now like erklat said, it is better to switch to more stable ROM as JB ROMs offer few space and their behavior have not yet been standardized.
Recap: In terms of memory, it is not necessary to change to an upper class, but it is always a nice harmless improvement.
In terms of speed, I have seen that changing to class 10 gives great speed changes in terms of massive gaming:
Due to the higher read speed and also with the read ahead bumped I was able to increase greatly the loading time of such games as Modern Combat 3 and Nova 3. I was surprised since I thought that it was because of the processor mainly that it was so slow. There is an increase in performance when switching to an upper class, but frankly you cannot notice it unless you benchmark the results by testing with a ressource eater app.
To recap: It is worth the change only for the read speed. I'm not sure but I think that write speed is somewhat limited somehow by the hardware. (I'm thinking about windows here, if someone could confirm that please. )
