First day with my ET4G

Hi everyone. So far I have my EL29 rooted and tweaked with Titanium already backed up with my apps. Gonna install CWM later do a nandroid and then...

well depending on if you want to stay on GB or go to ICS, I haven't moved to ics yet probably wont until source code is out, but so far my favorite rom has to be the tnz blend 3.0 by mijjah. has no bugs that ive found, and is very snappy. been using it as my daily driver for awhile now. think for fun im going to run blazer today. ill let you know what i think

I would take the jump and try out some ICS, its really all there for the most part and is more fun to play with than GB IMHO. Check out "The Goodness" by Mijjah, by far my favorite ICS rom out there.

HyDrA tablet/phone hybrid is very nice if you want ICS. For GB I would stick to TNz Blend or Calkulins ROMs as they are both tweaked to be fast ans smooth.

Try out Blu Kuban by Rujelus, he offers both a GB and an ICS version. Any of Calkulin's work for either GB or ICS. Agat63, Venum (Anakonda and Ice are fantastic), MIJJz. Of course the safest route is always sfhub's one-click packages to get a taste of the OS before adding in the extra sweetness of custom ROMs.
But as garwynn said, please read extensively before you do anything in ICS, heck even in Gingerbread.

The Hydra rom is nice, but I wouldn't suggest that to someone that just got an E4GT. Too experimental for someone that hasn't flashed a few roms first. But like I said, a very nice rom indeed! Everyday It seems I wake up to different "goodies" and I'm truely feeling the addiction. Finally I'm seeing a great community which makes it easier on everyone and leads to great roms. You will love this phone if you don't already

I just recently bricked my epic when going from one ICS rom to the Slim rom below. The page where this rom is is just below. The phrase at the beginning of the page was not put there when i was first looking at rom but now has been updated. Always flash back to a stock rom before you flash to another ICS rom for sure. Not even just flashing an EL26 kernel is enough to keep it from getting bricked. Other than that your going to really like this phone XDA has been really active in creating mod roms for months now and there a lot of GB and ICS options now. Patrick

Sorry about your luck. Did you flash he el26 kernel through a ICS recovery or Odin/Mobile Odin? I have flashed almost every ICS ROM including Slim-N-Trim with no issue. You MUST ALWAYS use el26+cwm to avoid bricks, but bad dl or flash can still happen even using it. I always do an MD5 check before flashing anything, even if I have flashed it before as data can become corrupted over time. You don't have to go back to a full GB ROM, but can if you choose. I just Mobile Odin the el26+cwm tar and reboot into recovery, then wipe and flash as usually instructed in the OP's.

Yup I flashed the el26 kernel though the mobile odin.. I have used this same el26 in the past on many many flashes and have not had an issue like this at all. And it has the CWM 5 embedded so i can boot immediately into recovery to use calkilins format all. Thats why i cant figure out why this happened to me in the first place.

Did you do a md5 check before you flashed? It could have became corrupted over time.

That's what I'm on now is the Blu Kuben- and I must say the Dev is right there to solve any issues that come up!! Been uesing it for a few days now - gist flashed the Fe21 modem and so far so good! + it is the only rom I found so far that lets you customize as you wish-
I have ran the other roms that are in the above post and have had very good luck with
all of them.

Let me clear that up - the Dev AND Others in the Development thread are there to help and since I don't post much ( have thanked and donated to a few) I look at all the post and the Op - this has helped a lot as I really haven't had many issues to begin with , with this rom, but the ones I have had - have been addressed by just looking at others solutions - so far I love this rom and cannot wait for the new update to drop - soon maybe?

If the Update and the download the same , I am on the 1.0.3.4 but don't see the update, can I download the full and use that to update without doing a wipe.

I think I will be trying to use Odin for my flashing until the bug gets worked out as my memory is susceptible to brick error. Probably after that too, I do like it.

Best ICS touchwiz Rom?????????

So I am asking cause I flash these Roms for a friend of mine at work he is a good friend but I don't have time test all these roms for him and I hate doing it at work with him . So what I am asking in everyone's opinion is what is most importantly the most STABLE ics touchwiz Rom as close to stock tpuchwiz as possible, he likes aosp but is a noob and I think a rock stable touchwiz ROM will suit him better since I can't test these roms out myself what Rom do you suggest also as close to stock please

Its one thing flashing your own phone to ics but why would you risk someone elses phone? Its not worth bricking a good friends phone, stay with GB until the release of ICS is final, stable and SAFE. (do as I say not as I do )

Back in May I installed the "leaked" ICS rom but it seemed a bit jumpy. I watched a lot of QBKings Rom reviews and installation instructions and decided to flash the Frankenstein Rom. I was pleased with that and they just released a new version that ironed out some bugs they had with the previous version (I did not install that). All this being said I really was intrigued by the Blu Kuban Rom and used ODIN to get to CWM and flashed this particular ROM.
They have a lot of testers with this ROM and now are part of Team Venum and have the support of them as well. This ROM has a built in ROM updater and the updater is very smooth. As was mentioned before, if this is your friends phone, well you know I had a samsung moment that I played around with before getting my E4GT. I was hesitant to do anything with it until the "Official" ICS build was released, but Jelly Bean may come out before that is ever released. Good luck.

You should have your friend look at qbking videos since you can't test them your friend can watch the review and how to videos have him search through threads so he can see which roms are stable and suitable for him. Everyone is different and every rom is different I think it's safer that way so he can't blame you if something goes wrong which 9 times out of 10 if your following the easy steps nothing should go wrong.

Ive tried many roms.. so far im having good luc with calks tw ics v1. 6.. then flashed the ff09 kernel. And modem so im up to date.. its very stable and so far no issues. And its rooted.. just tell him not to flash anything in recovery and you will be fine.. if he wants to flash things show him the right way (get to gb kernel with recovery).. and yes you take a risk of bricking the phone, but not if you know what your doing.. or u can listen to others and tell him to wait.. calks is great tho, mhl adapter works, 4g, 3g, mms, sms, wifi etc etc.. can even flash kobridge tweaks etc..

I have already flashed ics on his phone so I am not worried about that I am pretty good at reading up before I do anything and no all the basic commands, I just am tired of doing it for him and he is afraid to do it himself so I am going to find a stable ROM and tell him ill update it when I can I put aokp on his phone now but he doesn't like that he can't toggle the 4g like on a touchwiz Rom ,,,,, anyway I have read and team venom does seam to.be pretty stable but it is heavily themed I don't like that and neither will he thanks guys ,,,, on th team calk I flashed that before v1.3 I think but he could not install certain apps

Not to be rude about your friend, but someone scared and unable to flash their own phone, should not have root access. There are just too many user errors that they could make and then try to hold you responsible. Significant others is different, but a buddy at work just seems to risky. Like I said not trying to be rude, I know your just trying to be a good friend. The 1-clicks are idiot proof and maybe you can offer him advice and help him learn so that you are no longer responsible for his phone.

Help an S3 noob choose his first ROM

Currently running mostly stock 4.1.2 JB touchwiz MB1 MA7 with TWRP 2.4.3.0 recovery. Backed up as much as I could with TWRP, Titanium, and ROM Toolbox.
My wishlist:
- must work with Nova Prime (I make extensive use of app action shortcuts and swipe ups)
- themeable, but I'm not married to AOKP or CM10, any theme solution is acceptable including inbuilt themes
- prefer TW based ROM but not necessary if stability or functionality remains
- prefer not to have to flash a new kernel
- stability and lack of bugs are more important than performance to me (I use phone all day for work)
- must be able to use SwiftKey Flow in messaging app at very least
- all of above are more important than new features like multi window, photosphere, premium suite, new 4.2 JB goodies, although any of these would be nice
I was going to try CM 10.1 but got lost trying to figure out how to keep my Google Apps or flash the new ones correctly.

I agree with edfunkycold. Since you want to stick with TW, it's best to avoid the "Original Android Development Forum."
Nova Prime works with all TW ROMs, so no issue there.
In terms of Modding, you cannot beat the customization potential of Morphology. This works with most, if not all, TW ROMs. You'll have to flash a custom SystemUI for some of them, but it shouldn't mess anything up.
Kernels: In my opinion, you don't ever have to flash a new kernel. But sometimes one will play nice than others. I know the People's ROM gives you the option of which kernel you want to use.
Stability: This is the biggest improvement in TW-based custom ROMs in the last couple of months. These ROMs are more rock-solid than I've seen since LJ7 dropped. The Dev's have worked out most, if not all, bugs.
Swiftkey Flow: This should work with all TW-based ROMs.
So, after all of that, you're looking at any TW-based ROM in the Dev. Section. I would recommend The People's ROM, as it does allows for a lot of customization in the aroma installer.

(yes, we are shameless pluggers for this and MOAR)

Also take a look at goodness rom. They are always adding themes and other good stuff in the updater.

If you haven't looked already, also check out cyanogenmod. Love AOSP.

I know what you mean, being a flash-a-holic. For a while I was flashing 3 or 4 ROMs per week. I've now settled down a bit and have been running LiquidSmooth for 10 days straight. That's a record since I started flashing ROMs on my S3 back in December.

I get decent battery life, I have never really been one who analyzes it down to the last hour. I know that quite a few people use LiquidSmooth with the BMS kernel and have experienced over 30 hours of life (with minimal screen time, obviously).
Your mileage may vary, but for me, with LiquidSmooth with stock kernel, I can last at least 18-24 hours without charging (with minimal screen-on time). If I don't play any games, I'm sure it could last quite a bit more, but I like to watch videos and play games, so I never get the 30+ hours.

Are there other ROMs I can flash semi - dirty over TPR? It was a pleasant surprise when I flashed TPR over stock with only wiping cache and dalvik and all my apps and important settings and data were there waiting for me. I didn't have to restore anything from my backups. Even Nova automagically fired up with my previous setup. Is this typical?

Technically you should be able to dirty-flash any ROM over it as long as you are staying on the same Android version (4.1.2 to 4.1.2, for example). I still wouldn't recommend it.
And you should also know that if you do dirty-flash it, you'll get basically no support for bugs or issues. There's no way for them to keep track of the various bugs that would arise from dirty flashing for X Rom to Y Rom (think of how many combinations there are!).
I personally use Titanium Backup to backup/restore all of my apps/settings, and with Nova Launcher, you can backup your current setup and restore it after a fresh flash. I've gotten used to it, and can now get my phone back after a clean flash in about a half hour.

Appreciate the thoughts and agree. Already have all that stuff backed up. Once/if I find a setup I really like I will do it right and wipe all. But for now hopping around is sure fun. Only crashed my rig once so far (rescaled a boot animation which the sys didn't like at all).
Edit : well maybe I did crash it more than once. Had a weird issue using the back button in either aroma or morphology, but got into recovery just fine afterwards. Thought about putting up a warning but like you said since I haven't set up clean so was reluctant to say anything until I replicated the issue. But I'm here to tell you jumping back and forth in that morphology installer might give you an unpleasant surprise!

when i rooted the phone i used CWM...but then got TWRP when i tried to install CM 10....i like twrp, but wonder if there is any issue since i used CWM when i rooted?

The People's Rom has Gapps installed, if you go CM10 then you will.

I rooted with Team Epic recovery then changed to TWRP before I dirty flashed TPR 3.13 and all worked fine.

Yeah, as said above me, it doesnt matter what recovery you had when you rooted, you can switch at any moment and it wont make a difference
The only issue when switching recoveries is that you cant restore backups made in TWRP with CWM, and vice versa (cant restore backups made with CWM in TWRP)
Other than that, you can switch as much as you want

Question On Moving To A KitKat v.4.4.x ROM

Hey Everyone,
I'm currently running [ROM][TW4.3][MK3] ヅ Wicked Sensations Rom as my daily driver.
I am now considering moving to a KitKat 4.4.x ROM. I've done a bit of research and I've narrowed it down to the following:
1. - CandyKat 4.4.4
2. - **C-RoM** -***4.4.4***
3. - [ROM] [4.4.x] CyanFox Rom [OFFICIAL]
Now, for a few questions/points:
- Will I have any compatibility issues moving to one of these ROMs, coming from Wicked Sensations TW4.3/MK3?
- Do I have to flash a special version of either the Kernel or Modem to make these work correctly?
- Does anyone know if there are any glaring issues with these ROMs, more specifically, Bluetooth issues?
- As usual, looking for a ligh-weight, yet powerful and customizable, kick-ass ROM.
- I love the way that CandyKat uses the Aroma installer for custom theme options, that's pretty awesome.
- Any thing that I should consider before moving to one of these ROMs?
- Any feedback from those that are currently using one of these ROMs or perhaps suggestions on another ROM that I should also consider?

Cyanfox is on it's dead end. There are many others like PA,Carbon, CM, (The two I'm developing) Schism & MerkMod. I'll start at PA

You might consider Wicked X v7.3. Clear instructions in the OP on how to odin the nd8 rooted ROM. Comes with custom kernel and a boatload of themes. If you like tw and are familiar with wicked sensations this is well Worth a look. Been running this for quite a while and get great mileage on it and the modem is better than the mk3 IMO.

I'm currently running [ROM][TW4.3][MK3] ヅ Wicked Sensations Rom as my daily driver. Can I go from Wicked Sensations TW4.3/MK3 to any of the 2-3 KitKat ROMs that I initially listed?
Do I need to flash any special kernels or mods in recovery in order to make my phone work correctly with those ROMs?

ROMs usually come with a working kernel. Anything special they need should be posted in the OP of each ROM thread.

The rom that I suggested Requires that you take the OTA update or odin ND8 stock Kit Kat. This might not be what you are looking for.
The ones you listed I am not familiar with but at a glance you should not have any trouble flashing those. All roms need the occasional tweak or trying different kernels or modems. The best I can tell you is READ and then read some more.
I usually get about 50 to 100 pages into a thread before I flash a new rom.

If your going with touch wiz go with wicked x if your wanting to go aosp give vanir a run,I ran just about all the ROMs here and I have to say for touch wiz is great but vanir right now is so smooth and fast.I can't believe no one talks about it.latest nightly is 08/13/14 .its 4.4.4 , anyway which ever you try iam sure you will be satisfied. Just another heads up, switching to any AOSP or CM based Rom will cause lower signal strength Than touchwiz. While on Touchwiz, I get LTE in a lot of places but, when is switch to any CM based Rom, I'm usually stuck with 3g.

Besides 'Wicked X' and the 'Vanir' Nightlies...are there any rock-solid and stable KitKat v.4.4.4 ROMS out there for the Sprint SGS3? Last night for example, I flashed 'C-RoM'.
It booted up once and all seemed perfect. Then while I was going through the setup process, it rebooted for no apparent reason, then got stuck in an endless boot-loop cycle. Nothing I did worked to get it unstuck out of that boot-loop cycle.
Then as a desperate attempt, I went into Recovery and chose 'Fix Permissions'. Somehow that did something, because afterwards it rebooted perfectly.
I then finished up the setup process and began installing apps. I did a reboot (I forgot why) and then the boot-loop cycle began once again.
Now, even if I do 'Fix Permissions'...nothing will get it out of the boot-loop cycle.
Any ideas/suggestions? I sure hope that the hardware isn't damaged. Has anyone ever seen this type of an issue?

Yes totally, but I wasn't being ROM specific on my last post. I was just curious if anyone has seen this in general. My concern is that perhaps there could be some damage to the actual hardware.
** Also, are there more issues w/ 4.4.4 ROMs than 4.4.x ROMs? Which are the most recommended KitKat ROMs? I really liked the feel of C-RoM, but their Forum is fairly dead so they may not have much of a community.

Did you do a clean flash when installing?
Also, what recovery are you using? I recommend Philz recovery.

Also, to answer a few of your questions in the OP: I am on CM11 20140812 Nightly and all features are bug-free for me.
When flashing, you needn't worry about modems or kernels, unless you want a custom kernel. (I'm using the DKP kernel.) I would avoid modems altogether, as flashing more recent modems will not function without Knox.

Yes, Paranoid Android does work on our phones. I used to run it as my daily driver and loved it. Recently, I moved to CM11, as I wanted some of the features on CM11 that PA didn't have.

No need to format the sd card, as wiping personal files will do nothing to assist in flashing a ROM. To flash a ROM, one needs only to wipe /system, /data, /cache, and dalvik cache.
(Formatting /system wipes the OS and system apps off the memory partition; /data wipes user apps and data; /cache obviously wipes temporarily stored data off the partition; and dalvik wipes the pre-compiled drawings and app info.)
That's why I like PhilZ. There is a format option solely for the purpose of erasing partitions to flash a new ROM. It removes the guesswork.

Well i know one thing... I don't understand a word you guys are saying in that thread lol...
I don't know if this kernel affects the camera or not, i thought i saw something about a camera in the main thread, but i can record 1080hd with the camera now! That is the very first time I have been able to do that on ANY ROM...
It's running smooth... I'll keep messing around... Let you know if anything is off... I know that on the d710, 4g was merged with the latest cm nighties... If you flash any other kernel, 4g won't connect... At least it wouldn't for me... So I'll check that too when i get around 4g area...

Lanchon.... Thank you for the hard work you put in to the kernel. Flashed the FPBug fix kernel, worked great. Was able to play mp3s for 2 hours without Poweramp stopping every 10 mins or so. However, just flashed the Trim+FPBug kernel, and device did not boot. Samsung splash screen then black screen, no bootani, made 3 attempts then restored nandroid.

there are confirmed successes in the proper d710 trim thread, with extremely good results btw! plus you booting into recovery proved that the kernel actually worked.

i9100 is the model number, since you are in the d710 thread I assume you have one of those, you need one that ends with d710 for either m12 snapshot or 20141217-NIGHTLY. These are CM11 kernels so you need to be running CM11

Thanks. I kinda figured that kernel wasn't for the d710 but all I seen was kernels for the i9100 so I was thinking it maybe was a universal kernel. Didn't want to risk it. I had the s2 when it was first released and went through about 4 of them before the eMMC fix arrived. Now the s2 is back in my life.

I haven't done anything with my E4GT in some time. I've come back to try to get it running CM11. I've come across this thread and threads about trim.
I can handle installing CM11. What I am unsure of are all the other kernels available including this one. It appears there are kernels that support trim and ones that do not. From what I gather though the posts about this kernel is; it does not support trim. Is that correct?
