Best members.
I rooted my new Galaxy Note 2, and I reset my binary count to zero like I did on my Galaxy S2.
I thought I was good.
Unfortunately, I discovered that the Note 2 has a device status in settings that indicates whether my system is original or modified.
I found a way to reset it back to original by doing the following; I saw a tutorial on this forum that has 2 ways, wipe data from Syscope via Titanium Backup and/ or wipe your phone data.
I did the first way via TB but unfortunately the results were negative.
I back upped my data and wiped my phone data, yet again no luck.
I'm stuck at the moment and have no clue what to do, can anyone help me please?
Best regards.
How you have rooted your device?
Are you using CWM recovery /custom kernel?
What exactly there device status while you put device on download mode

Thank you for replying.
I have installed the root "Cwm6-root-note2.tar" Obviously w/ clockworkmod and chainfire's SuperSu permission app. Relatively simple installation (like always)
I have no custom kernels, roms or whatever on my phone, I simply rooted my device.
I just used the "Triangle away" app to set my binary count to zero. That worked perfectly!
I just need to find a way to set device status to "Original"
Note: I used your 2 ways tutorial, it's explained in very accurate detail but no positive result for me unfortunately. Thanks though.
Just check your download mode
You will have flash counter 1
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Costum Binary (Flash counter) = 0
Current Binary = Samsung Official
System status = modified
This is w/ my phone is telling me once in Download (ODIN) mode.
Sent from my GT-N7100
And which recovery you are having?
It should be CWM.?
Once reboot to recovery and again try checking binary in download mode
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Once in recovery mode I spotted the "Rom manager" logo in the middle.
My download mode is as exact as what I just told you on my previous comment.
I installed Cwm6 root, surely I must have CWM as recovery right?
Excuse my ignorance, it's been a while since I've been on this website, I missed al the updates and changes.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Once you have CWM recovery you can't reset counter as well status
If you reset it will change again to 1
Read first line on my signature post #3
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
I entered download mode for the second time, and I will explain to you in great detail what I saw.
- -
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-N7100
COSTUM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
SYSTEM STATUS: COSTUM
- -
It appears my flash counter is still zero.
How come?
Sent from my GT-N7100
In between have you reboot to recovery?
I think that should change after rebooting to recovery
It is well known fact if you have CWM recovery your counter will raise again
Same details you may find in chainfire's thread for triangle away.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
I have booted into recovery mode and you're right. It does goes back to '1'.
However this is no issue for me, I must need to know how to set System Status to "Original."

simply flash stock recovery, and reset counter as you did it before that's it.

Try using TA 2.37. it will bring your SYSTEM STATUS in download mode to OFFICIAL

to be honest i dont know. i have custom recovery and running a custom ROM but my status in download mode is OFFICIAL.
the link i provided is from S3, but it works on my note 2 as well.
see basically when you are on custom stuff and your counter is non zero then there is no value of status in any manner like to reclaim warranty/recieve updates
i don't know if any indication to reset it other than these.

Hey XDA! I recently perm-rooted my SGS3 T-mobile versionT999 using the QCOM Toolkit and Odin and I flashed custom CMW recovery 6.(whatever) and did backups of all my stuff like data, system, EFS partition and more. It also renamed my recovery restore files. I read a few things regarding the OTA update of JB coming out soon and heard that if it is updated it could actually turn s-off back on and mess up your root and mess up a bunch of other things that I've done.
First off I would like to ask for some clarification on this subject as to what exactly will happen if the OTA updates to JB and if it will automatically be prevented or if I have to do something to keep my phone from automatically upgrading to JB on its own. Also if it turns out that I cannot do the OTA JB update should I just flash a custom JB rom or possibly flash a stock release of the JB rom?
Secondly I wanted to ask about the flash counter. Currently I have not flashed anything but CWM (twice cause I tried to flash touch but it failed) I have not flashed any roms or kernels or radios yet. Has my flash counter already been tripped? What exactly will trip the counter? I also read something about resetting the trip meter and flashing everything back to stock including unrooting. Can someone post a link to a guide(s) that have steps for that? (Trust me I've been looking on XDA for a few hours trying to answer all these questions myself but I cant find some of them and I figured asking and having them answered all in one place would be much easier and helpful to me and others as well). In the future I may look into flashing another kernel so I can overclock and also some other roms. Another question arises though: What exactly is and insecure kernel ( I believe thats what they're called) and also what is an insecure boot img? Sorry I have so many questions but theres a lot of information to take in when a new phone receives root and gets a bunch of new possibilities!
One final question until new ones arise. What exactly are these new builds I keep reading about? Ive seen "T999UVALEM", "uvalh2", "uvalh3" , "UVLI2,3 & 4", "UVDLI3", "UVDLH3", "UVALG1", and "ULVH2" and I assume there are many more haha.
What exactly even are these??? Its just too much to keep up with. Thanks to anyone who can clear up the confusion
Well I believe that about sums up my questions so if you can help me out I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks guys!
If you have cwm installed the OTA will fail.

So when I used the toolkit (which used Odin) to root and flash CWM the counter was tripped? Oh well I'm sure there will be workarounds later
Yes go ahead and flash a custom Rom. The developers will have a rooted version of the ota once it drops. And you can just flash that.

I don't know what the toolkit is but there was a guide in the development section on rooting without tripping the counter. Essentially it used Odin to flash a stock rom that had root injected and from there you could install cwm. As long as u flash roms with cwm it shouldn't trip the counter to my knowledge but if u use Odin to flash roms it will trip the counter

Hi
My N7100 has a strange problem.
I switch on wifi, then go to about phone and then software update
Then I click check for updates.
Earlier when no update was available, the phone used to simply say "latest already installed or something like that"
Now it keeps doing "Checking for updates" and this goes on for more than 10 minutes. After that I pressed cancel.
I restarted phone, but no use
I am on stock rom, stock kernel. My phone is rooted though using dr. Ketan's method and I have also reset the flash counter.
Same here....got no clue

I've got the same thing. I just put it down to been rooted.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
So, does this mean, if you root your phone OTA updates are KAPUT??
I did not see this in the rooting threads. I think then we need to add this info, that if you root your phone, update through mobile ODIN only
Since rooters are facing this problem, I have changed the title to reflect the same.
Rooting is a modification in firmware, and OTA can not recognize modified firmwares. If you've rooted without a custom recovery, may be removing root from supersu (or any super user management tool) can fix this problem.
Mine showed 2 different OTA messages after rooting: The first one: "The phone has been modified, etc..." then I used Triangle Away (it always shows 1 in the flash counter though) and now it's stuck in "Searching for updates".
Unfortunately I can't find the stock rom for my country (Honduras). I want to go back to 4.1.1
Of course, sure. Rooting will Disable OTA update. If you wanna get OTA update back, just go to Samsung-update.com
, download the latest firmware with your country name, if your country is not found, choose the nearest country, and then flash it with Odin, then OTA update will available back.

I think as long as you're rooted you can't use OTA updates on Samsung. I got triangle away, status normal, rooted and the same thing happened to me when trying OTA.... so best way to just flash each new update via Odin. Since there is no data loss involved, it is ok. And then root again (it is a 3 minute operation anyway)

Yes if your rooted you can't do it. And your right it would be a lot faster just to flash the update via Odin. But if your just having a bad time with a rooted phone for some messed reason. Then that fourm will help u get back to stock as you can be.

After u reset your flash counter and reboot you still have a custom recovery that makes flash counter raise to 1 back again x) if u want to keep flash counter zero and still root u should get prerooted stock roms, there could be other options but i dont know abt that

Did you try root method #2 in the link that audit13 provided you with? It will root you and remove knox so you won't have knox trying to block SuperSU. But it will certainly void any warranty you may have (if the things you have attempted haven't done so already).

Have you considered using a custom rom like maybe S3Rx it is very stable way better than AT&T 4.3 and it is pre rooted with no knox. Your warranty is already void anyhow check it out in the development section. I have to warn you though it is a large file due to all of the options it has for you to pick from as far as what you actually want to flash on the phone. That's what I'm running now and won't use anything else.

The S3Rx has less bugs than the stock 4.3 glad I made the switch, but it isn't for everyone. To each his own. But don't rule them out. I don't do nightlies because of the bugs I only do stable roms.
There is another stock 4.3 in the development section that is a stock AT&T rom and has knox removed with selinux set to permissive. It is pre rooted aswell it is by loserskater IIRC it's in a thread by updwn4par. Good luck and happy flashing.

You can go down to 4.1.2 (we never got 4.2) but it is not something most people want to try. You can end up in a soft brick state where nothing will boot and no stock odin files will work. Then you have to flash a special fix to make your phone usable.
So why would you want to try that? If you just want stock odin the current NE2 tar from samsung.

2. My device was rooted with the binary count tripped so I can't revert to stock rom *
3. I can't go back to the custom rom that I was on because there's no OS *
* = is this true
Question is, is there a way to either reset the counter so I can go back to stock rom OR get a custom rom that has the stock framework underneath already that I can just flash?
I'm totally stuck. . .and I dropped my phone in the middle of this debacle and cracked the screen
I'd try going into download mode and flashing the stock NE2 tar through Odin...

Cool I'll find it and give it a try
I tried,
I get a signature fail error when I try it in Stock recovery, and just a failed notification when I try it in TWRP. Anymore suggestions on how to get an OS on my device?

You need a windows machine and a program called odin to flash a tar not recovery.

Ok, I've been trying to flash .tar.md5 files via odin and but I get an error message on the phone that shows the binary counter, and says the file is not signed
Did you try flashing a custom recovery through Odin yet? I would suggest trying to flash philz latest version through Odin.
Turn off auto reboot in Odin. Once it's complete, pull the battery. Put the battery back and and reboot into download mode (power+home+volume down buttons at the same time)
Edit. Before doing the above, have you unzipped the tar file on your pc?

Yup, I've unzipped the tar file. I've been in and out of the latest TWRP and stock recoveries with no luck so far, but I haven't tried philz yet. And I'll remember to turn off the auto reboot and see if this method will allow me to get the tar file flashed
Thanks, I'll let you know

So I flashed Philz latest recovery and got back into download mode, but I got the same error message
SW REV CHECK FAIL. DEVICE 3, BINARY:2
I'm going to try to flash the custom ROM I wanted using Philz. . .

SUCCESS!!!!!!
Philz did the trick, initially the ROM wouldn't install but I ticked the update binary option and VOILA!
Philz is my new recovery, and now that I know it works. . .I may even get back to trying out my pegasus kernel lol
Thanks for the assistance!
