[Q] USB OTG problem - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a bnew USB OTG cable, I used it with my note II. It detects the flash drive then an error message "USB mass storage is unexpectedly removed".
Then it detects again the flash drive then reports the error. The problem goes on and on until i removed the flash drive.
I also tried the flashdrive and USB otg cable on other phone then it works.
ROM: omega v.12
Kernel: Stock kernel

What kind of rom do you have? Or is it stock samsung firmware? Infos about your system can help diagnose the problem.. Have you tried using other flash drives?

updated the first post for the infos :good:

anyone know about this?

If it works on other phones then there must be something wrong with your phone or at least your rom/kernel..try wiping your dalvik cache, see if it helps or try using this app by chainfire:

I have done fullwipe and reflashed the rom still have the problem

Mine does that sometimes. If you can reformat it, do that and it usually works fine.

check the another flash drive, same problem also occur in my note 2 but it has solved by changing flash drive.

Otg cable faulty.
I had a similar experience recently where it would not connect until i twisted, and fiddled with the wire for some time and at one exact position it would come up then if the cable is shaken just a little, it is unmounted unexpectedly.
Try a different otg cable. I'm sure it would work without any problem.

Having Same problem with OTG cable
My phone details:
Verizon i605 Note II
Beanstowns106 Build 9
Cable is in Standard Samsung box labled simply USB Connector in bold then underneath Micro USB type
from seller on Amazon: This approx. 4 inch cable is the straight type (not the one with 90 degree micro usb end)
When I insert it, above the notification area, I get a msg. USB cable connected. Same when I unplug it usb cable disconnected.
I have tried a usb mouse, usb keyboard, several thumbdrives formatted to FAT32. I get nothing on any scenario.
Can't find nothing in systems settings. Gave up on this cable even with Samsung markings on it. Inside the box the instruction sheet was in Chinese only. It was a $15 dollar cable.
Finally I broke down and ordered the $3 dollar cable with the 90 degree micro usb end. My Amazon confirmation tells me after the fact it's shipping from China and should be here by April 15th!
Would it be more painless to order the Smart Dock? I just need extra thumbdrive storage for FLAC files to use with a portable FiiO Amp/DAC in the pocket.
Has anyone found a way to get this working yet, much obliged for comments.

Got this resolved. In case others find themselves in the same situation. Here's what I did. Since all was lost, I cut the cable in the middle, it's only four inches so cut wisely. I can recall the original color pinout but that don't matter as long as you end up with this.
micro usb side: Red wire goes to USB side Red wire. (I believe they were orig. reversed with Black)
micro usb side: Black wire goes to USB side Black wire (Again I think they were orig. reversed with Red)
micro usb side White wire goes to USB side Green wire
micro usb side Green wire goes to USB side White wire
Now the tricky part... Gently pry open the plastic housing on the micro usb connector with an exacto blade then wire jumper the Red wire on the end of the connector i.e. top right from the rear view, and fold the small jumper underneath to the unused pin (same side underneath) an solder it.
test your work then epoxy the plastic housing back on. The cable is too short for shrink wrap, so fingernail or varnish your solder joints and let dry then electrical tape the p**s on it. Best of Luck!
MAJOR EDIT BELOW.....
Okay, I need to edit this post before someone else fries a neuron. Disregard the above mod. This is the correct wiring diagram don't fall for images google give you. I had it working and disassembled it to document it for you gys.
here goes.....
First place a yellow wire into the unused pin on the micro usb connector side.
Next solder that yellow wire to the Red wire and then solder those two wires to the Red wire on the Female USB 2.0 connector!
originally I said Black but it's actually the other red wire.
Then connect the Green wire (Data +) to the other sides White wire (Data -)
Similarly connect the remaining White wire (Data -) to the other sides Green wire (Data +)
Finally solder the to Black Ground wires together.
Note: if you want get fancy and charge the phone while your using some device in the female socket, I'll figure that out tomorrow as the google tutorials adding the 100K ohm resister didn't work for me.
I'll also be adding a switch and mini USB in order to connect a portable audio DAC for Hi-Fi FLAC use. It's 3:AM so it'll be done later tomorrow or Sunday if anyone is interested in doing this mod as well. Later! mookie man.

Have you tried using the cable on a different device? If it used to work then it might be a faulty cable.. Try wiggling the cable while the flash drive is connected and see if it'll work.. Have you recently tried any mods or differeny kernel before it malfunctioned?

cannot detect USB mass Storage
Hi I was looking for a fix with my problem.
I just bought a OTG cable then when i tried to put a flash drive on my N2 N7105 it won't detect the USB. I tried 4 kinds of USB also format them to FAT32 and NTFS but still my device cannot see the flash drive that i put in. the i thought maybe my OTG cable has a problem. so when we test it on the same device with my friend it connects automatically. Also I'm rooted and didn't flash any rom im just using the stock rom. anyone can help?

[Q] OTG USB hosting?

Is there a trick to getting the OTG/USB hosting to work? I have the latest Juggernaut ROM & latest Faux kernel. I received an OTG cable, but the phone doesn't react in any way to it. The light on my USB flash drive doesn't light up, mouse doesn't work, etc. Do I have a bad cable, perhaps? Or is there some setting I need to activate?
Thanks!

So I guess it's either not compatible with the T989 or the cable is defective? It fits in the bottom of the phone no problem, and USB devices physically plug in properly.

I have the Same problem like you have on your Phone. I have the Juggernaut V3.7 and and Bullet Kernel which support the OTG usb but I can not read the USB Flash Drive either.I think it's a bad USB adapter I bought it from Ebay too.
OK, I ordered another version of the cable, hopefully that will do the trick!
Thanks, fellas!
I received this OTG USB cable, which says it's for T-Mobile's Hercules, in the mail yesterday and it works great:

Seems to be very good quality. Another host cable I'd tried for the international version of the SGS2 (GT-i9100) did not work. It did work on my brother's i9100 he purchased in Europe, so the cable was good - just not cross-compatible (at least for that particular cable).

USB cable "OTG" not working am I doing it wrong?

I got a Micro-USB to USB (female) cable form ebay... from China (I didn't know until I chekced later. I usually have the "UK sellers only" option checked).
Anyway, after an eternity, it arrived today. But, it doesn't work when I plug it in. Nothing happens. My Sandisk Cruzer doesn't light up when I plug it in or anything.
I was on the ninphetamin3 Kernel, and I've tried the Siyah kernel, just in case it's the kernel that was limiting functionality... Apparently it's not because it still doesn't work.
It only cost a couple of quid, but is there something I might be missing that I can check before buying another from the UK?

That is not necessarily an OTG cable... did it SAY it was an OTG cable? If not, it probably isnt. Pin 4 and 5 need to be connected (in the micro usb side) for it trigger OTG functionality. if it is not working it means one of 2 things:
1. You didn't buy and OTG cable, you just bought a cable with the ends you wanted, but without the funtionality
2. Something is broken on your phone... test that cable in another phone with OTG capability (go to a verizon store if you have to)
3. I think i remember seeing you need an app to use some flash drives (keybaords and mice work without any app, i can attest to that from experience)

That's the one I got. It's 5pin, but you're right in that it doesn't say it was OTG.
I don't have another OTG compatible device to test with
I got an OTG cable and I tired loads of different things to get it working.... in the end I rebooted the S3 with a usb drive connected and it worked after that.

yep, it is just a plug adapter.
You now have 2 choices:
1. cut open the micro USB, and connect pins 5 and six
2. buy one that actually says it is an OTG

It looks like it works! Both the phone and my 64GB flash drive are being powered via a USB charger connected to a Y-cable. As far as I can tell, the phone battery isn't being charged and may still be draining a bit--this may depend on the current delivered by the USB charger. But I've been playing music for hours from an attached USB flash drive with my screen on and the battery level is still sitting at 98%.
I've attached ZIP files with a boot image containing the kernel. The yakju boot image was created by replacing the stock kernel in a Nandroid boot image obtained from the Galaxy Nexus described in my sig. The other boot images were created from the boot image included with the Google factory ROM. I can't test these, so use with caution. NOTE!!! Make sure you do a Nandroid backup of your phone before trying out the attached boot images. Things can go wrong and you want to be able to recover.
This was posted earlier in the thread, but credits for the kernel code tweak, along with details, go to the contributor to this thread
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/30615-can-you-charge-usb-host-mode-simultaneously/
Have fun!
10/09/12:
I've added two more ZIP files. These contain boot images with the code modded such that the phone battery is charged when using the Y-cable. NOTE: The phone will think it is being charged any time a USB OTG cable is connected. I haven't figured out a way around this yet. This doesn't really hurt anything, except if you have your phone set to stay on when charging, you could end up running down your battery! Important safety tip.
10/15/12:
I've replaced the previous ZIP files with two new ones. These contain boot images for takju and yakju JRO03C/4.1.1 that provide USB OTG+charging, with the added benefit that you can still use a standard USB OTG cable to connect an external device. As in the stock kernel, the phone will provide power for the external device. In other words, the new kernel in the ZIP archives auto-detects if there is a charger attached via a y-cable and uses it to power the external device and charge the phone, if it's found.
I've also fixed the problem where the phone would show a charging icon in the notification bar if a USB OTG cable was attached without any external device connected to it.
NOTE: THESE ZIP FILES ARE NOT MEANT TO BE FLASHED TO YOUR PHONE. These files contain a file called boot.img that can be flashed to your rooted phone from your computer via ADB with the commands
fastboot flash boot /path/to/<boot>.img
fastboot reboot
You can learn more about using fastboot at http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/Fastboot.
12/28/12:
Version V4 is replacing V3. This new version fixes the bug where detaching external power from the USB OTG y-cable or USB hub wasn't detected by the phone. Now, when power is detached, the phone switches to battery power, including supplying battery power to any attached USB devices.
Note that the reverse is not true. If you connect external power when the phone and external USB devices are being powered by battery, the phone will continue to use battery power. The external power is not detected. When in doubt, disconnect and reconnect the USB OTG cable to cause the phone to recognize what's attached.

I believe he is making a reference to your op
I don't understand what op is asking.

I think he is wanting to somehow daisy chain the devices having power from the first one provide enough charge current for the last one. Least that is what im thinking he said i dunno though
Ok let me explain it a bit better. Lets say I have a flash drive (external storage, external hard drive, whatever you want to call it) I connect it to my phone with a usb to micro usb adapter. Now I have my ONLY micro usb connector in use, but after a while I'm running out of battery so I want to charge my phone BUT I can't since I can't remove my flash drive (because I'm using it).
Now I'm asking for an adapter or something that can let me connect my flash drive and still be able to charge my phone. like a 2 usb to 1 usb adapter for PC. Or like the adapter to connect 2 headphones in one headphone port.
I hope it's clear enough now.

Connect that to a powered hub, plug flash drive into one of the hub ports. That should work, though i don't use usb otg, so i couldn't say for sure.

Unfortunately, the answer is no. I've tried several ways to get this to work, with no success. I routinely mount a flash drive using a USB OTG cable and the Stickmount app in order to listen to my music collection. It works great, but USB OTG drains the phone battery rather quickly.
I even cut out a notch on my desktop dock so I could attach the flash drive while trying to charge the phone via the dock's pogo pins. Here's a thread discussing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651757
The USB standard does provide for a method of charging while using USB OTG via a device called an Accessory Charger Adapter. But I haven't found such a device available anywhere.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you do happen to find another solution, do let us know.
I don't think I have the bits needed to try it, but looking through the spec, I think you can simulate the requirements for the ACA.
Connect a 124K resistor from ID to GND on the micro side. That should tell the OTG host (the phone) to go to Charge/Host mode allowing the B device (memory stick etc) to work AND allowing the phone to charge... You will need to provide a decent 5V power connection. You need to power both the phone and the accessory device from this.

USB OTG Cable Doesn't Work Anymore

All the supported devices worked with my Note earlier. My USB storage, a pen drive formatted to FAT32 also mounted well. I had a good time exploring the Note as a cool mini PC connecting my keyboard and mouse until recently.
Now the OTG connector is ONLY detected with a notification saying "USB connector connected" but nothing happens after that. I am aware that power is available across the cable since my brother's Galaxy Ace starts charging and the LED symbol on my Razer mouse lights up but there is no activity on the Ace except charging and my mouse won't work.
I have tried USB Host Utilities and stickmount from d great developer but doesn't that doesn't help but increases my concern.
Has someone faced similar issues? Someone help please..

Does the normal data cable work when you connect to a PC ?
If not then you might need to carefully clean your data port.
Yup that works perfectly fine except for the usual Hardware ID missing error on the PC..

USB On The Go/ OTG not working, help.
I have a note n7000 on ICS 4.0 and am a first time android user, bought the phone a week back.
I tried using an 8gb flashdrive with an OTG cable. it didnt recognize the flashdrive at all, though it showed that a USB
cable has been connected.
Next i tried a 4gb flashdrive. It did recognize it but didnt show it in the "my files" list. notification says "usb storage is
empty or un-recognized format or such"
I installed the "USB host controller " app, that did'nt help. I tried to format the 4gb flashdrive in FAT32 with 1024 cluster
size and quick format mode, that didnt help either. I have attached the screenshots from the app.
i dont wish to loose warranty, and have never fiddled with drivers of android device before.
thanks a lot folks.

The cable is bad, I faced the same problem I asked for a replacement cable, and that worked without any problems!

I got the cable checked at the vendor. he could play a micro sd card via a card reader through the same cable and also a keyboard.
Also what does "s3c usb host driver not found" mean?
now?
A screen shot I forgot to attach last time:

Are you on custom ROM?
Can you confirm if you are on stock ROM or custom ROM?

I was on stock back then..
Should Work!
I am using the N7100 and I have faced no issues yet...your cable should be fine...if in FAT32, will read automatically...if NTFS, use a program called paragon NTFS...running stock ROM and custom kernel...
otg cable works on note 2....
hello friends,,when i bought note 2 almost two months ago i used same otg cable which i was using on galaxy s2 but after updating note 2 when i attached otg cable it just shows "usb connector connected" and doest not read the flash drive,,i searched a lot on the internet for solution but didn't found anything and then flashed many different roms to check out if there is any problem with the rom,,but same result..so today i bought a new otg cable superior than first one,,so i attached it and it works prefectly,,i have tested flash drive,,keyboard mouse all works smoothly..
So at last i concluded that there is difference in otg cables may be it is in the pins structure of the adapter of the cable,,some of the cables which works on the previous galaxy devices does not works on the current galaxy devices,,so when you choose a otg cable make it confirm it is the latest build which is compatible with your device..
thanx...

diy smart dock for galaxy s3

after searching a little bit about 11 pin port in galaxy s3 and take apart an 11pin to 5 pin adapter i am thinking about make DIY smart dock for galaxy s3
i ordered mhl adapter and waiting for it mean while i tried to connect usb otg and extra micro usb connector together so i can use otg and charge the phone at the same time. but the problem is when i short ground and seance pin for otg ; charging doesn't work.
so any suggestion about the project?
i attached a plan of my project here
edited:after failing my 1st attempt i succeeded to make it work on my 2nd try!
this time i opened a 11 pin to 5 pin adapter. it has a small resistor which is connected ground to sense pin for hdmi out put. i removed that resistor and i connected 5 extra wire in the adapter 1. vcc 2. data+ 3. data - 4. sense 5. ground ( i showed in picture) . then i connected sense and ground with a 40.2k resistor.
then the 4 wire, which i i connected in 11 to 5 pin adapter (vcc, data+,data-, and ground) , goes to a femele usb where you will connect usb devices or usb hub.
and thats it!! hope you can try it too. if if have any other question just ask me

AW: diy smardock for galaxy s3
You forgot the vcc at the otg side, but anyway it can't work.
While charging you send 5v through the micro usb to the phone.
But in otg mode the phone will send 5v to the usb connector to supply power for the connected device.
I think your only chance is to use the inductive connectors to charge your phone while in otg mode.

There seems no way like you want it. I told you the problem.
You have to use the Pins for the wireless charger (QI-charger) under the battery cover.

charging via the back pins while in OTG mode with throw a message popup that says over current protection and shuts down the S3
at least it does on mine.
I have the smart dock and after opening, it does contain quite a bit of electronics

I have a suspicion that the IC to the left of the Realtek one is the brains of the board. The RT chip does the hdmi out conversion and the other two longer IC's are usb host and usb audio. Can't make out the printed data on the unknown chip, but my best bet is if we can get a dump of whats on there then we might have a good chance of DIY hdmi/otg capabilities. i'm no expert by far, but just throwing ideas out there.

hi guys! just want to give an update of my work.
i got otg and charging work together.
as in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061 i just connect ground and sense pin with a 40.2 k ohm resistor.
i ordered 40.2 k ohm resistor which i just got tonight. the hdmi adapter i have is a cheap and old one. its not mirroring the screen. i ordered a new Rocketfish MHL HDTV Adapter . hope that will work!! waiting for that to arrive!!!!
here i am giving 2 screen shot
mess lol
and here what i did so far....

Great work, necomer. I've also been trying that for two months now, but haven't been able to make it work. I have the 40,2 KOhm resistor between sense and GND, and am able to launch smart dock mode on some ROMs I have tried. So, which ROM are you running? My only idea here is that maybe you having a US S3 is what does the difference (well, I'm assuming that, maybe you have an international one).
Thanks in advance, and once again, great work :good:
Hi. Thanks for reviewing I am using us galaxy s3 and just the stock touch wiz rom android 4.1.1.

I'm pretty sure your buying the wrong MHL adapter. The Note II and the s3 have a different micro usb than any other phone and require the samsung
MHL adapter.
Not sure what you are trying to do?
Amazon sells a combo cable so you can use OTG and charge the device at the same time. I use it to connect a 1TB portable drive to my S3 and Tab 2 10.1.
I bought the official Samsung HDMI adapters for both devices. They are powered and stream over HDMI to my TV just fine. Works with just about everything I've tried although some services require some workarounds. Copy protection crap.
What you are trying to do sounds risky. You might fry the phone.
I apologize if I haven't grasped your intentions but I'm kind of slow.
Edit: I think I may get it now. Are you trying to power, feed external data through OTG and then stream out to an HDMI display?
Dumb question as I said I'm slow but, how about the official Samsung HDMI adapter and use the power in port with a powered OTG combo cable?

what i am trying to do is, use otg , charge the phone and use hdmi at the same time. i thought it would be easy bcz samsung made new 11 pin connector in Galaxy s3 . so apparently its supposed to work ,as they are not using same pin for transferring data. But i dont have any idea about internal proses. while charging and otg at the same time is possible, dont you think we can connect hdmi with it in any way?
well all this is just guessing from my little knowledge. i want some suggestion from those who worked on this and correct my mistakes

Maybe... it's a HDCP problem...
If your TV don't support HDCP function(or authentication failed), then MHL chipset will show a black screen
(HDCP : High-definition Digital Content Protection)
I was going to this topic, being all hopeful that I finally might get my S3 in OTG+Charge mode. And then it turned out it only worked on a phone still running 4.1.1. I have 4.1.2, and OTG+charge did work for me before, but it seems Samsung broke it in 4.1.2. It is probably the fault of the kernel that came with the XXELLC (a stock 4.1.2 ROM) update, but how to fix it is beyond me.
Are you serious! I won't update mine then. I need to use that together! !!
Thanks for the information
