I flashed a rooted-stock FK23 Rom (JZ054K.SPH-D710.FK23) - there was no CWM on FK23 at the time (not sure if there is now), but it really meant that I had to Odin instead of zip flash. I'm newbie enough to not really know the differences. I'd like to try SlimBean, but I really don't know where to start -- should I Odin an ICS Modem? Kernal with CWM? Please give me a little help....
Hey! To get to SlimBean, here's what you'll need: Agats FK23 recovery, Mobile Odin, an ICS or JB modem (I'm using F127) and of course the SlimBean ROM and gapps files(if you want them). Get Mobile Odin on your phone and flash Agats fk23 recovery then boot into recovery. Once there, wipe data, cache/dalvik cache or use JB format x2. and flash the ROM and the modem you like and you'll be good to go

Sorry I meant ICS or GB modem not JB haha
Is ET4G called a SII9100 also? I'm not sure which rom to download from Slim.
The SII9100 is the international SII but our phone is the SPH-D710. Flashing anything other than SPH-D710 can cause some serious problems. Ktempleton has a thread on SlimBean in the Original Development section with the download link
Safe Mode
Ok, I copied everything to the external card (rom, slim gaaps, bunch of other addons on slim's site. I flashed Agats FK23, and expected to reboot to recovery to erase cash, data, flash rom, modem -- yet I think I found a "safe mode" -- can't seem to find recovery. Am I supposed to -- shut down, (hold) vol down, press & release power to boot to recovery....
Am I doing something wrong?

To get to recovery hold power and volume up until you see the Galaxy S2 screen then let go of both buttons and it will load

I had a few questions on how to do this. I eventually figured it out and since I didn't see an exact "Guide" on how to do this besides a few posts from the CM9 Discussion thread I decided to post the steps I did here.
Hope this helps somebody!
WARNING: FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE YOUR DATA (SDCARD will be fine though).
These are the exact steps I did.
1- Auto Restore Using ODIN via sfhub's TAR file to EL29; here (I used the SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe)
2- To install CWM, I used the Auto Root package (Option C) then (Option L); here
3- I then downloaded CM7 and GAPPS here and placed them on my microSD card
4- Booted into recovery and wiped data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and go back to "Mounts and Storage" and clicked on format /system. I then flashed CM7 and GAPPS (Directions on how to flash here here)
5- Go back to the main menu of recovery and reboot system
6- I verified I was able to boot into CM7 without any issues (Wait until it completely loads and did another reboot).
(Optional) I went back into recovery and made a backup
7- I then downloaded the CM9 zip file and GAPPS file (Download here scroll down for Alpha4 and GApps v7.1) and placed both of these on the microSD card
8-I then booted into recovery and flashed the CM9 zip file, flashed GApps v7.1 file, and wiped data/factory reset; (how to video here)
9- Reboot system
10- Enjoy CM9!
(Optional) You won't have a custom recovery after you flash CM9. If you want a custom recovery, I recommend you use this one here. I flashed it through Mobile ODIN and had no problems. I used the "Rogue Stock FB21 rev2 (Odin Tar)". Read this post if you want to flash through regular Odin here
Thank you very much. I was looking for something just like this
EDIT: Why can't you flash straight to CM9?

Honestly I'm not sure. I've seen several posts of people having issues when trying to go from any of the leaked ICS ROMs to CM9 (Some of them semi-bricking their devices). This is apparently the safest way to do it.

You can but you keep hearing people saying "iz brickz my fone" all the time because they tried to install CM9 with a kernal or rom that doesnt play very nice. So this is in a way the safest way to do it if you dont want to have any trouble. Ive been doing it like this since thats what someone posted on the cm9 thread when it first came out.
Edit: lo0l you beat me to the reply
Sounds good. Doesn't CM9 come with a kernel though?
If not, which kernel do you recommend using with CM9?

At the moment thats the only kernal you can use with it. no other AOSP kernal out there that is available to download. Atleast this is from what i understand. First time rooting phones after i got this phone. Still getting the hang of all this.

I was on the leaked ICS ROM and want to go back to a different ROM. My phone is kinda soft bricked now. I downloaded the EL29 auto restore and it's running now but it's stuck at the last percentage (data.img) part.
It's been sitting here for 30+ minutes and last night I let it sit for about 1.5 hours.
My phone won't boot up but I can get into download mode but it won't auto restore to the EL29. I don't know what I'm missing. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm sorry, Im confused. I have been searching and I have read 3 seemingly contradictory facts:
- NEVER flash CM9 with any other recovery other than clockwork mod
- NEVER use odin to flash clockwork mod on an ICS rom
- You can flash a newer version of CM9 over the old one
So i'm using CM9 RC0 and I would like to update to alpha2 without wiping. CWM disappeared when i flashed and I keep reading that its dangerous to use the stock rouge recovery. So I went to go use odin to get CWM back on but there is a warning to never try to load it using an ICS rom?
Where am I going wrong here? I really dont want to wipe and flash to a GB rom just so that I can use odin to get CWM and flash back to cm9.
Thanks, I just wanted to make sure i didn't ruin my phone!

What you want to do is flash the EL26 kernel with CWM through Odin. Once it's flashed and the phone starts to reboot, pull the battery. Put the battery back in, boot into recovery via Vol up+ power and then flash Alpha 2 over RC0, flash GApps and reboot. You should be good to go then.

This is a recent thing that started when the ICS leaks started coming. Before ICS, rooting and flashing this phone was as easy as any. It still is actually, but you have to be more careful, especially with any of the AOSP ROMs. It should be back to normal once the official ICS update is released and we get our hands on the source code.

Worked perfectly! Hopefully you have helped many noobs down the road when they search for this. What threw me off was QBKings video when he kept warning to never flash EL26 on ICS. (Mad respect though, QBKing!). Thanks for clearing that up for me!
On a side note, yeah, things seem complicated. I know there is a good reason why CM9 doesn't include a good recovery but I hope as things develop we will eventually get back to the "Rom Manager" days. Man, our devs spoil us!
Ok so i was on GA10 stock rooted (one click) and I wanted to go back to a custom rom so I followed these directions:
-Make sure you have the ROM zip file already on your SD Card before starting this. Gapps too if it is a CM/AOKP/AOSP based rom.
-Download Mobile Odin Lite from here. You can also download from play store.
-Download GB - EL26 Stock repacked with CWM from here. You want the .tar.md5 file. OR use EG4T-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5 md5 - 2b781e4515982a6b7d9586cbb3158647. Direct boot kernel will boot into recovery after flashing in mobile odin.
-Open Mobile Odin and select the kernel slot. Find the file on your sd card and select it.
-Flash firmware. It will take few seconds and phone will reboot.
-Next step is very important..
-Now one thing to keep in mind here is that you just flashed a Gingerbread based kernel. If you are on ICS or JB, your phone will no longer boot. So you want to hold down power + vol up until you see the CWM recovery.
-From here on follow the instructions of the rom you are trying to install.'
But now when i hold down power and volume up CWM does not come up....what can i do?
I can get into download mode so worst case can i do GA10 over?
You can do a one click restore only.!
You cannot keep data, it will bork your phone.
Otherwise you have to work with desktop Odin on your pc.
Mobile Odin ain't all that, i wouldn't trust an app to do serious stuff like this.
Hope this helps.

Um dude.
Do some reading. Then maybe some more. And after that try a little more.
OR you will surely turn you very nice shiny device into a pretty paper weight.
Seriously.
There is no CWM for a 'Stock' ROM. You must add/install that on your own. AND there are many ways to do it too - PC Odin, Mobile Odin, One-Click PC Odin etc. Again read...
Read through all the stickies, how tos and the OPs of the ROMs or mods you wish to add. And read through all the follow up posts to them. Your question is most likely answered already.
There is SO much information and help here it's crazy. But you're not going to go far if you can't search for it.

I know there isnt CWM in a stock rom thats why i followed the directions i posted above. I used Mobile Odin to flash firmware EL29 like it said. From there it stated my phone would not boot if i was coming from ICS or JB as i was, but if i held down power and volume up i would see CWM but i did not. I am afraid to try it again before I get some advice as to why it might have not worked.
You probably didn't hold the key combo long enough or held it too long. When directbooting a recovery like el26+cwm or el29 while on an ics/jb rom its usually easier to pull the battery, replace battery press and hold vol+ then press and hold power wait for the splash screen to show up and continue to hold the vol+ and power when the galaxy s2 splash screen flashes and comes back up release the buttons and wait a sec and recovery should boot up. If you release on the first splash screen it will contiune on regular boot and attempt to boot the rom, if you hold it too long on the 2nd splash screen (identical to first just shows a 2nd time) it will reboot the bootloader instead of starting recovery which starts the boot process all over again. If the rom you're using will boot with the kernel/recovery you need to release the keys on the first splash screen as it won't show a 2nd time, it only does that when the kernel can't load the OS so the bootloader restarts then allows the key combos to access download (odin) or recovery modes

Thank you for your answer Evil and im sorry for the double post but it upsets me when i come to a forum for help, (and trust me I have read alot on this site and others, but you can read something 100 times and if you dont get it, you wont get it) and people just answer with read more. I did read, and I followed the directions exactly and they did not work as planned. So I came here to figure out why.
But i appreciate you taking the time to answer. You mentioned dierctbooting and I am wondering if i used the wrong EL29. The directions state:
-Download GB - EL26 Stock repacked with CWM from here. You want the .tar.md5 file. OR use EG4T-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5 md5 - 2b781e4515982a6b7d9586cbb3158647. Direct boot kernel will boot into recovery after flashing in mobile odin.
I used the first EL29 Stock Repack should i have used EL29-directbootCWM? Does this mean once i flash in mobile odin CWM will boot right up without me having to hold down power and volume up?
Yeah direct boot should boot straight to recovery on power up without the hw key combo. El26 you have to do the hw key combo I always used el26 and never had any issues

I think im gonna try the directboot tomorrow. Ill let you know how it goes.
That's why you should always use EL29 direct boot.
Place your rom zip and gapps on sd card (external preferably)
Then flash EL29 direct boot it will boot straight to CWM, from there follow rom thread instruction, something like format data, cache, dalvik and Sometimes format system then do a factory reset just in case then flash zip then flash gapps reboot profit.

Yeah im not sure why I choose not to use the direct boot...I guess because it sounded easier I thought there had to be something else too it. But since I dont see any real battery improvement with GA10 I am going to try this today and go back to JellyBam. The battery life is slightly worse but I really like 4.2.1 and JellyBam seems really smooth to me.
So building and flashing ROMs is nothing new to me. I've been doing this since the Captivate days and have done this with all of my Android devices including my new Kindle Fire 2 (which is running 4.2) but for the life of me, I cannot get a 4.2 ROM running smoothly on my GS3.
Here's the deal. When flashing any 4.2 ROM, I get the same issues. Most times, it takes several (as in at least 8) presses of the Power button or home button to wake the screen. When it finally wakes, the animation on the "unlock" button freezes. I can sometimes still swipe it to unlock but most times, the button itself doesn't move. The phone typically runs fine once unlocked.
I know there are some camera issues still but mine make it totally unusable. I can open the camera but rotating it typically screws the orientation up on screen and no other screen presses work afterward. If I tap to open settings or flash settings, the options show up on screen but then again, screen presses are no longer working. I have to exit camera and start over which typically results in a couple Gallery FCs before it finally opens again.
What I've done to no avail. I've tried multiple combinations of wiping cache, system, dalvik, internal SD card, all within TWRP as well as checking MD5 on the ROMs after they've been copied to my SDCard and am running the latest TWRP available for my phone. I have also tested this without restoring ANY data and using the packaged launchers and I get the same behavior. If I go back to a 4.1.1 ROM, everything is perfectly fine. This ONLY happens on the 4.2 ROMs available.
I'm looking for any help on getting this sorted not because it's a big deal but because it's driving me friggin' insane!
Re: [Q] ALL 4.2.2 ROMs hate my phone. Help thread.
Have you tried CWM Recovery yet? It's what I use and have literally tried every rom put there with no problems ever.

You don't mention it, but did you use the wipe option that is at the bottom left of the TWRP wipe menu screen? The scary looking one that says it's probably not needed?
I do that one every time.
I would restore to stock 4.1.1. Then flash TWRP's latest again and try one more time by flashing something mainstream like CyanogenMod 4.2.2.
Flashing stock ROM's has fixed a couple weird issues for me lately.
I just flashed stock 4.1.1 through Mobile Odin Pro, installed CWM Touch, and flashed AOKP 4.2.2 from Task650 and same behavior. In fact, now when I hit the power button to lock the phone, I cannot turn it back on without rebooting the phone by holding power.
I flashed stock through Mobile Odin to try and prevent tripping flash counter but I may just flash from Desktop Odin and try again.
EDIT: Is there an updated boot loader (ICS to JB) that gets flashed through desktop Odin?

Have you tried a different kernel? I run ktoonsez KT747 with Task's AOKP with awesome results. Nothing against Task's underwear kernel, but maybe the 4.2 version just doesn't like your phone.

yes if you flash the 4.1.1 stock file through the desktop odin you will upgrade the bootloader , with the new boot loader everythime you reboot the phone with a custom recovery like cwm or twrp it will raise the flash counter. Here is what I would do. reboot to twrp , wipe data/factory reset , wipe cache wipe dalvic and wipe system. then go to advanced and reboot into bootloader/download mode. once in downlaod mode flash the rooted ics 4.0.4 rom with desktop odin, I was going to link the thread by mrrobinson but it seems someone un-stickied it so your going to have to try and find it.either go back to stock from sammobile.com and root it or get a pre-rooted file. once your back on stock rooted ics download goomanager from the play store. inside the goomanager click install open recovery script. this will install twrp on your phone. after that put the rom you want back on your and follow the op for that rom. do it exactly as it states.I reccomend task650's rom. If you still have a problem try a different kernel. Not all phones are the same, some phones wont even boot up with certain kernel's. hope this helps

I just did exactly this just now and the same exact symptoms occur. Even after flashing ktoonz kernel. This is the weirdest thing I've ever dealt with.

yes that is very odd. If it works fine on stock or 4.1 rom's then it definatly not a hardware issue with the button. Im sorry man , I have no idea what it could be.
Yeah I'm confused as well. I just flashed the last CM10.0 4.1.2 and it runs flawlessly. Definitely a head scratcher.
Hey guys i just installed a GB27 rom and i am rooted by i cant find how to install a custom recovery like cwm or agat? how do i do this?
There are tutorials in the stickies of the development and general sections.
You will need to flash the GB27 stock kernel back once you are done with flashing whatever tweaks or mods you want.

Odin or mobile odin

Currently there is only a repack kernel and you do not want to stay on that for long... but here it is just flash it in Odin (or mobile Odin) and reboot into recovery. also, you may want to DL the stock kernel and flash that after your done flashing in AGATS.

iam about to smash this phone. but it seems that ever since i had tryed to flash GB08 or GB27 all i have its bad luck. mening i instal eather rom succesfully. and everytime i try to flash the custom recovery from agat and after its all succesfully flashed i go to the custom recovery and do a factory reset and clear cache using the lates agats recovery and once i exite the recovery my phone stays on soem stupid boot loop on the sprint 4g boost screen and keeps looping.. so i have no other choice to go back to Fi27 from freaking 6 months ago. does anybody knows about this boot loop crap? i even dowloaded the latest agats recovery today and still same issue.. weather i use oding or mobie oding he same issue happens. now i also use agts recovery when i use the Fi27 and it works awesome. i just dont know what is this boot loop crap issue on JB.

I know there's a lot of information in the thread link in the quote you posted, but it discusses the known issue of the boot loops and the efforts to get the source kernels and the CWM/tRec recovery issues resolved.
With that being said; You're doing the right thing by using a known working recovery to bypass that issue when you want to reset and/or wipe.
Keep paying attention to that thread as Garwynn is working on it, and narrowing it down, and Agat will join in when he gets back.
I would suggest going back and reading that thread in it's entirety.
Long story short, something changed in GB27 versus other builds that causes data to be wiped in a way that permissions are not set properly and the kernel panics, resulting in said boot loop.
Here's the good news - the file system itself appears to be fine because I did a before/after and it can create files. Just throws all sorts of permission errors. If I can get a cable from home (and time at work today) I might build a test kernel without panic set in the fstab and for testing only. If not will have to wait until tomorrow for me to test.
