I wouldn't have thought this is possible. Are you wanting to encrypt the whole sdcard, or just create an encrypted folder in it?
Why do you want to encrypt it?

Because there is a loop hole to locking people out of your device and even if you could lock people out of your device it's still possible to mount the kindle to a computer and look thru it's contents. I figured encryption would be a good way to protect privacy and make the device useless in the event it is stolen. Much in the same way an encrypted harddrive would be if it got into the wrong persons hands... accounts, logins , emails pictures, etc.

Are you using Amazon's OS, or are you using one of the 10.1 roms?
There is an option under Security in the settings that will encrypt your data, but I don't know if it works. It says the only way to decrypt it is to wipe the tablet. I also wonder if it would stop you from installing a replacement ROM, unless it it was saved somewhere that wasn't encrypted.
If you couldn't flash using TWRP, you would probably have to push the partitions via fastboot.
I think you need to do some searching on Jelly Bean device encryption.

I am using the Amazon Os along side android, I haven't noticed that option you speak of. Guess I'll have to look into it more. Was thinking truecrypt cause that's the standard when it comes to pcs and usbs. Thanks :good:

if you have encryption it asks for the password or has a setting for the password in twrp

I'm was wandering if anyone knows of a way to get Google Play on my Kindle Fire without root?
I don't want to root because I sent in for the warrenty once, so it would be a big help. I'm not new to the tech game so don't to me like I don't know what I'm doing plz.

Shouldn't you be experienced enough to use the search, then?

You cannot run Google Play without root permissions because it will only run as a system app with the proper permissions which you need root to modify. As far as warranty goes, you can restore a rooted kindle fire to stock and remove any proof of the fact that it has ever been rooted by following one of the guides to return to stock.
I used to have my KF completely bricked after running ICS and different ROMs on it and so forth and recently sent it back to Amazon for ghosting. After having restored it to stock and doing a factory reset, it couldn't be differentiated from one that was brand new out of the box.
Thanks but I still think there's got to be a way to mod Google play because I have 1 mobile and it works flawlessly, so I guess ill try to mod it

No, there is not a way to do it without root permission. You have to have root access to move to system/apk and change permissions.

I appreciate your drive and willingness to try but the reason it won't work is because even if you were to find a way to get the app to run without being run from system/app you will still not be able to use it to install apps. The way it was designed to integrate with android is to contact google's servers and directly install the app to your device using its own permissions derived from it being a system app. If it doesn't have those permissions it won't know what to do and will crash. It cannot just download the app to a folder like 1mobile does. I understand that you want to use google play without rooting, I tried to do it too before I eventually gave in and rooted, but trust me you will be much happier with the device when you have root permissions. If you decide to stay with the stock amazon version of android I would recommend trying modaco's rooted stock ROM which comes with google play already installed, it will not only save you the trouble of having to attempt to install the app yourself (which is actually more of a hassle than you would think) but it also has better stability than stock does and you don't have to worry about amazon upgrading you overnight without your permission and you losing root.

I got a used Kindle Fire, but it has a parental control app on it preventing me from doing ANYTHING. So at this point I don't even know if I am rooted and can't even get into settings. So how do I boot into recovery and factory reset from there, like I said I don't think I am rooted but can't tell either.

Try to use KFU to root and install TWRP. Once In TWRP goto wipe and wipe data. That should remove the app.

Starting off I have experience with rooting, flashing Roms etc. I use to own the Nook Tablet running Cm10.1.
I recently bought the Nexus 7 FHD and was wondering what the most simplistic way of rooting is there for the device. I am happy with my device's UI, I just want root privilege, more specifically so I can use certain apps and connected a PS3 controller to play games.
In summary, I need root privilege without flashing CM or recovery programs.

enter bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
allow the unit to wipe data/cache and reboot
enter bootloader again
fastboot boot twrp.img
In TWRP choose install and select UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip
TWRP the only way to root? I'd also much rather not wipe my data and cache. Not sure why I would have to for root.

When you unlock the bootloader, the tablet forces you to wipe data and cache as a security measure, otherwise anyone can just bypass your unlock method. You have no choice in the matter.
If you don't unlock the bootloader, /system is write-protected and you can't install root permanently.
You don't need to "install" TWRP. You just run it temporarily to install the root files. The command I gave you just loads twrp into memory to run it. It doesn't flash over the stock recovery.
You probably want to just look at one of the guides. I know you said you had experience with rooting, but probably not familiar with nuances on nexus.
Ahh okay, thank you. Before, recovery programs would flash over stock and I had to use an image file to flash stock back. Annoying.
My other question being what do you suggest me to do about backing up then restoring data and cache? Any apps work good with this PR should I manually back up my data and cache partitions?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
CWM Helium work? I know Titanium is only root.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Not sure about non-root backup. The first thing I do is to unlock bootloader so I don't have to redo my efforts, so I usually just use Titanium.
I want to save all my data and cache files including pictures etc. just like it is now. Whatever is best for that. I'm not all that crazy about rooting my new tablet (although the factory image is now released) but I like rooted privileges.

I'm sure there are backup programs that work without root, I just never looked into them. For the images, you should be able to just drag and drop them off the MTP device that shows up when you plug in the nexus to the PC (MTP is the replacement for USB mass storage)
I've found a few guides for rooting. Thanks for the help!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Copy/paste what you can off the devices storage partition, then unlock.
Nexus devices don't require a "hack" to root like other devices. Eventually there will be a non-unlocked method for rooting, but because it is so easy out the box, not much effort goes into finding a workaround.
This is why unlocking is always best to do immediately, even of you don't root or do anything.
Backup apps should work fine without root since it will have read only rights by default. Restoring a backup would require root to write. And Be cautious though because I used titanium backup while being rooted before I switched to a custom rom. When I tried to restore I got errors and the programs got really stupid. I uninstalled a few and they wouldn't let me reinstall at all without error messages. I had to find alternatives. Might be a better way but I didn't spend much time on it. Lost my Riptide 2 save though

I used the Nexus Root Toolkit to backup all my data and cache, and it restored without problem. Helpful application. Thanks to everyone!
Sorry for posting here, I just desperately need some help. I haven't been able to use my phone for about 5 days now. I need to know what to do, I'm so ****ing lost. I have a very unique situation (I feel), and I don't know where else to go. Basically, encryption ****ed up somehow and now I can't access my device via ADB, I might have lost ROOT, and I don't freakin know what to do next...I've never been in a bind this bad while rooting phones (done it for years now).
History on what happened: I had everything set up beautifully in CM11, I loved it, was smooth, everything worked.
Saw the encryption option in settings, decided to do it, and then the password I set up would not work. I wrote it down, I was extremely careful, I made sure I entered it properly both times. It just wouldn't work!.
Now I have no phone...I hope I didn't brick it permanently. I couldn't factory erase or anything through the CWM recovery I had. In the "mounts and storage" section, I was able to format the /system partition, but not the /data one. I believe that when I formatted the /system partition I somehow removed root, because now every time I try to exit CWM it says:
Root access is missing. Root device? THIS CANNOT BE UNDONE.
I tried saying yes, but it still asks every time. I am also unable to get the ls980 to be recognized by adb. I have cwm recovery open, and the phone is connected to the computer, but it doesn't see it. I suspect this is because I don't have root?
I am very confused, and could really use some help. The people at the sprint store have no idea...
Thanks!
Oooh, someone somewhere else said they had to remove all the drivers and reinstall. Before it recognize it. Not sure about cwm recovery but I know twrp had side load option. After you can see it in adb.

Hmm Ok, will try that. In general, when accessing a phone with ADB, do you have to be rooted?
Also, in general, when accessing a phone with ADB, what do you need to have open on the phone? Just any screen of the recovery right?

You used to have to root with adb commands. Pushing a file over and such.
I want to say you should be able to. But Google it for sure. With cwm there may be something in advanced.
I'm using twrp.

**** dude...holy **** all I want to do is wipe my phone and put a rom on there. ****ing encryption is WAY better security than I ever thought it was..............
If that is the case, is it possible to root an encrypted phone from adb? Or do I need to learn to format the partitions first? Remember, I was already able to format the /system partition.
What may get you a better chance without doing partition damage or such would be .tot back to stock.

I agree man...clockworkmod should have a sideload option on it. Try a diff USB cable what error message do you get ? Do you have access to your internal storage via recovery if so flash a backup I believe I remember reading that in the past somewhere through a diff device being encrypted
Sent from my LG-LS980 using Tapatalk
I hate to tell you this, but you're going to end up having to TOT. Just by wiping system, you lost any chance of recovering any file you had, because the generated encryption key is stored in that partition. Good luck bud.

With recovery, yes. Unfortunately I'm not quite ready with it. I suppose you could dd the partitions, but dd'ing an active partition is a little hokey.

With titanium backup, we could only backup all apps installed on FTV and possibly some settings (data), but not AFTV settings and the rest, right?
Seems that no one is interested to full backup the whole enchilada system in case of a disaster.

Titanium can backup any apps data, including system apps. That covers pretty much everything. Although you can factory reset it all day long and nothing will break or anything. I'm not quite sure what kind of disaster you're looking to avoid. The only thing that could go wrong would be if your /system got corrupt, which it won't. But without an unlocked boot loader there really isn't much you can do about that.

No you can brick it in other ways. I installed Google and did not reboot after installing framework. Stupidity like that will lead you to a blank screen after boot. Just remember this key function to factory reset.. hold right arrow and back button for about 10 to 15 seconds which brings up a factory reset

I have the backup its in a form of a folder.. 201409022009 inside this folder I have 2 folders.. addons & userdata and a file called xbmcbackup.val
The files are on my PC, how do I get them back on this new firetv I am trying to set xbmc up.. I loaded XBMC again and the XBMC backup app, however if I choose the path under the restore option it simply doesn't let me choose the folder.
