My friend had an old HTC Windows Phone, and one day the screen cracked. Dev tool! He was kind enough to let me use it (he's since upgraded to a sweet Lumia), and I'd like to begin by rooting it.
Will I absolutely have to reboot into Windows in order to root the HTC, or is there a tool for Mac OS X that will do the job?

if you have mango, your bootloader is 4.5 or 5.1
first you must downgrade your bootloader version using gold card method.
after that you Hspl you phone and use a Custom ROM on your phone.
note: your data on your phone will deleted during this works . . . so make a backup before that
To actually answer your question: I doubt the flashing tools will work on OS X, but they might be available. The program is called RUU (ROM Update Utility). As for installing HSPL, that requires a driver and a program that are also unlikely to be available for OS X. Creating the GoldCard can be done on OS X, since it understands the FAT filesystem, but that's probably the only non-Windows-specific step. I'm not even sure if the Mac connector app allows sideloading apps; you may need to reboot to Windows just to install anything after rooting (although custom ROMs nearly always have XAP installation built in).
I would install a Vurtral machine of XP or Windows 7 on your MAC if you want to do this...
If you let us know what Model HTC it is (or post a picture of it as most people would know by a quick look), we could get you to the exact process for your device. Each device is a little different int he process but, I know for a fact, I have not seen any of the tools for OSX or Mac (what ever you want to call OS X), using a VM that can connect to the USB port would save you a LOT of stress trying to get a Windows App to run on a OS X machine(if even possable for the 3rd party apps).

[HOWTO] Use DFT HSPL with Verizon Trophy (SparkW only!) [Revised 2-NOV-2012]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1503298
I've been using Xev's rom still, because there isn't a rom that has been tested by the author with ms' rtm rom. I would like to have the dynamics 2.0 rom, but its only for the euro edition (not the verizon branded edition with the 16gb storage)
If this isn't a verizon phone, just ignore my post.

ok im a bit lost but here is my situatoin and question...
Sit: I bought a Unicel HTC S621 phone works fine, but i want to upgrade the Mobile version from 5.1
Question: Is there a way to upgrade this with a T-Mobile 6.0 or higher version as i am a T-Mobile Customer?
Ponder: Is this phone the same as T-Mobile Dash? just curious because it appears to be.
Hi my friend. I have an htc s621 from mexico telcel, there is a lot of t-mobile roms in the roms section you should take a look there. They are the same phone as s621 is american and s620 is european.
Greetings
thanks alot just wanted to be sure they would work

Welcome to the forums
TY for the help i did read something, about unlocking CID... is there a way to tell if its unlocked?
i do know the SIM is unlocked as i have put my T mobile card into it and made calls and text with it in. So even tho its unicel phone i did get it does work with my t m sim.... i want to do this right, but am unsure if the CID is unlocked.
normally they come CID locked.
if you want to flash directly, turn off the phone, quit sd card and sim card and turn on the phone while pressing camera button, this will put your device into flash mode. Download a T-Mobile Rom and connect via usb, and run ROM update, if you get a error code then your device si protected or the model predefined is not the same as intended the update utility. You can "force" the ROM update using the tools that gmaniac2008 told you.
I like very much original rom, altough some cooked roms you can found in the rom section are very nice and have the latest windows mobile releases, lots of prebuilts apps and customizations.
in Official ROMS
you should install maybe this 1.22.531.6 (T-Mobile USA, WM6) because contains some configurations like mms, gprs, etc. from your carrier (to install this try the past method if dont works then you have to read more to force install)
A good choice if you want to try a custom rom, and they have autoinstaller (just need to quit sd and sim and turn on the phone, connect to usb, and run the utility. The utility is autoinstall.
is 080408 - Remade By Rickywatt windows mobile 6.1

Thanks for the help and guidance to the right ROM but one big problem, there is no romupdateutility.exe file in the .rar file i downloaded so how the heck do i get the update utility?
oh btw if it matters im running windows 7 x64
Just download the files, they contain te rom update utility. Just have to run.
Better if you make the update on Windows XP x32.
Take a further read on FAQs thread. Official updates (rom updates utilities) looks like RUU_EXCALIBUR_bla bla bla.exe
RUU_HTC_S620_bla bla bla.exe or
RUU_HTC_s621 etc etc etc
Greets.
May I know is there a way for MAC OSX?
Cause I only have a macbook pro.
Anyone know please tell me.
Thanks
I done mine on a macbook pro mate.
I used windows on here too though for the ruu.exe.
I find it really worth while to have windows installed on a MBP, just install it through bootcamp!

Can I do it in VMWare Fusion?
Though I've not tried it myself, there should be no problem running the RUU through Windows on VMware Fusion so long as you've attached your phone to the virtual machine.

Thanks,
But may I know what can I do with my phone after root?
Cause new to using Android.
To be brutally honest, if you don't know the reasons why you want to root, you probably don't need to root.
However, that being said, here are some good reasons why you might wish to do so:
1. Market Enabler - if you're in a region that doesn't allow paid apps, you can use Market Enabler to "spoof" your region in the Market to allow you to buy apps.
2. Apps2SD - if you're the sort of person who is going to install hundreds of apps on your phone, you'll appreciate the ability to install your apps to your SD card instead of phone memory.
3. Custom ROMs - whilst these are currently thin on the ground for the Desire, if you want to play with other ROMs, you'll need to root to install custom ROMs. This may become more important when Android 2.2 is released, as HTC are historically very slow providing updates for their devices (Hero -I'm looking at you!
4. Specific apps - some apps (e.g. Titanium Backup) require root access to function correctly. The same applies to other features like wireless tethering via WiFi or Bluetooh.
5. Control - you are just the sort of person who wants to know they are in complete control of their device. Whilst it is currently possible to root (thanks to Paul @ MoDaCo), future updates may prevent it so by rooting now you keep your options open.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Dave
What else do I need for the rooting?
Cause I just downloaded the Linux ISO
Thanks
I have flashed phones before, (my TP2 runs android)
Sorry for the extra post, but I know someone has tried this.
I've read the stickies, there is ALOT of outdated info, dead links, etc..
***Whats the easiest upgrade route to get a stock WM6.0 Kaiser on Android?***
WM6.0>OEM HTC WM6.1 ROM>Android
OR
WM6.0>Custom WM6.5 ROM>Android
Which is the easiest/quickest way to get Android?
NAND or run Haret off the SD card?
I don't need a walkthrough just anyone's quick advice. Espicially, any trip-ups I might encounter regarding the radios and SPL versions.
Thanks
Sucessfully bricked the phone trying using Atools!
congratulations for not thoroughly reading the sticky topic about HOW TO COMPLETELY REPLACE WINDOWS MOBILE WITH ANDROID.
It Requires Radio version 1.65 or higher (which is only compatible with WM6.1 or 6.5)
It Requires HARD SPL Version 3.29 or higher (which is compatible with WM6.1 or 6.5) for the case you wanna flash on NAND
So either way, you gotta upgrade to WM6.1, HardSPL, Radio, then Go to ANDROID. Impatience often hurts. Android is blazing fast when installed on NAND (sys + Data)
So tell me,
Your phone is bricked in what sense? flashing using Atools is risky. I suggest go with RUU utility or SD Card. And I suggest you must consider a lil bit of reading first
Atools isn't a flash tool...
Thanks for the help, and I can sense your frustration. I make my living doing IT work. And, I'm not technically a newbie to the flash game. I've owned the PPC6700, Mogul, Touch Pro, and TP2. I've flashed them all. I've even contributed a sticky or two.
I admit I was rushed. And like a small child with a gun, I took a shot without fully understanding Atools.
Yes, I can only blame myself for my Kaiser's demise. To answer your question, the Kaiser is toast. It can't get bootloader and only has a blackscreen and one green light. Atools wins this round. But I'm not too concerened, I'm in a position where I have a nice stock of Kaiser's to fry before I need to peruse The DEFINITIVE MTTY thread.
Dark_prince, please don't blame my impatience entirely for the phone's death. Don't you think some of the blame definitely falls on me not being a bit smarter than 'ye old sticky thread (How to replace Windows Mobile with Android). Following that sticky verbatim will lead a WM6.0 user to HARDSPL first, and then update WM6.1. Ignoring that, the sticky also instructs users to use Atools, which requires it's own sticky.
In the passing year and a half since that sticky was updated, haven't newer versions of Android appeared with newer methods of installation that aren't covered in the sticky? Specifically, it's not clear to me where to find a newer Android installation tutorial that doesn't include Atools.
I'm comfortable that I could complete an Android-Haret setup running off the SD card, but I don't think performance would be acceptable. I want what you and others have

and I'm not above begging for your help to get it.
Now that I've burned one attempt, I need someone's input about how to proceed. Any help is appreciated....
In my usage case, I'm starting with an AT&T 8925 (Tilt) (KAISER100) w/ WM6.0 Professional. Here's where I stand on attempt #2
1. Cleared the storage on the phone.
2. In order to get the correct usb drivers on my Windows 7 PC, I downloaded and installed WMDC 6.1 UPDATE: WMDC 6.1 Does not install ALL the correct drivers, you'll need to force some by reading this thread.
3. A few toggles of "Advanced Network Functionality" later, the phone was Syncing nicely.
4. I then downloaded and flashed the Official HTC AT&T Tilt WM6.1 Upgrade ROM Success.
I now have stock WM6.1 and radio version 1.65.21.18
Next up, I'm trying to decide which HardSPL to use, and which radio will provide me with the best options from the Android Chefs. I don't anticipate any trouble flashing these. But, which combination of HardSPL and radio offer the best base package for an upgrade to Android? I'd love your advice.
Speaking that, after I upgrade the SPL and radio, how the hell do I get Android on my phone if I'm not suppossed to use Atools? Don't I need Atools in order to create a custom .nbh and Android install package for my Kaiser? If not, where can I find these files, especially if I don't know my panel type?
UPDATE: A Little bit closer.
I successfully updated the SPL / Radio(1.70.Olinex) / SIM Unlocked using KaiserUnlocker.exe
Updated the bootloader to 3.56 Hard SPL nostuckinSPL / Force USB via SD card
Updated the radio from 170.0linex to 1.70.19.09 via SD CARD
For any Windows 7 x64 users attempting to Flash their Kaiser, be sure to have a look at [TUT] Dummies guide: updating HTC USB Sync Drivers.
I should have made a bigger mental note when after I installed WMDC 6.1, Windows FAILED to install the correct driver the first time I connected my phone to the PC in bootloader mode. The above thread explains the process of booting Windows 7 in a special mode, in order to force customized drivers to be installed on your machine, the hard way. I followed the steps until about step 12 (my device manager never yellow flagged anything). According to the thread, it looked like it failed, so I resorted to the next best thing. Keep the phone in bootloader and unplug and replug to different usb ports praying that my "forced-on" drivers would finally recognize the damn thing. Success, it finally did and Windows started loading the Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM Windows driver. Launching KaiserUnlocker.exe took it from there, albiet with one confusing caveat... IN the first part of step 1, KaiserUnlocker will tell you that you need to unplug and replug your usb during the second-half of step one. Okay, no problem. It fails to tell you that you're going to do this "uplug and replug" at the same time you'll be staring at text in red saying DO NOT UNPLUG OR LAUNCH ANY PROGRAMS!
However, unplugging and replugging is necessary in order to trigger Windows to use the bootloader drivers to communicate.
Hi guys. Becouse much people in thread [DFT][Updated!#2] HSPL / RSPL for HTC WP7 First Generation do not know, how to downgrade SPL to be able HSPL using, we can resume all known ways here. But, I have no all devices, post confirmations, please. I have got >=1 confirmations from all next mehods, but, use it carefully, it is on your own risc. For any devices no JTAG/XTC method is possible to restore factory state!
1. Two-stage way (worked for any devices only, but for all SPL states including "small" and "big" halfbrick).
Using official update parts.
Description .. in progress.

Google Translated Unbrick Manual.
2. ROMUpdateUtility way (worked for any devices only, for equal brand/region only, not for halfbricked, but PC USB connection is needed only).
EDIT: ATTENTION: DO NOT TRY METHOD NR. 2. It is really, that this method can work only on any device, but more devices may be fullbricked!
Using original ROM parts (Thanks to Ansar).
Description .. in progress.
Links:
Google translated from WMMania.cz
EDIT> Better way seems original SPL downgrading RUU only - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411904
3. Full GoldCard (worked for all devices, all brand/region, for intacted SPL and "small" halfbrick only, but not for "big" halfbrick). You need Y-Cable (may be simplified - see picture - you nedd 2,5'' external disc usual additional power cable and very chip USB A/F-A/F junction only).
Using original ROM parts.
Description .. in progress.
One way only, which is for Trophy device fully confirmed.
Links:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359498
4. Simplified "like" GoldCard (worked for any devices, equal brand/region only, for intacted SPL and "small" halfbrick only, but not for "big" halfbrick). You need Y-Cable (may be simplified too), but you do not need second WM/Android/Linux device for CID reading.
Using original ROM parts.

Please clear up my mixed head.
I have a O2 Branded Htc 7 Pro. I am stuck on 7720.68
I cant restore any of my premango states and I cant boot to usb host mode anymore. (800b010a or 8018004D or...)
So there is no way to fix my bootloader at the moment right? Official Updates from Zune (HTC Updates or 7740) dont work either. However I have the possibility to use the cab sender togo to 7740, but that is the only cab that works this way.
Help me please what can I do?
After Mango halfbrick
Hi kaemen. Have you tried http://htc7pro.howto.cz/O2ODEHTGoldHTCOEMUpdate2011.cab posting by cab sender? If success, you can downgrade SPL by GoldCard. But, it is for your risc, cca 1% of flashing results fullbrick.
Google translate page http://htc7pro.howto.cz/Unbrick/UnbrickCesky.htm or see all my posts in HSPL XDA thread. Martin
this is seriously bugging me now.
I dont have backup before 7720,
i dont have y cable or anything
spl is at 5.1
now can anyone simplify what needs to be done?
I dont understand why this is so complicated for everyone. I have a HTC Mozart on DFT 7720 and i can easily downgrade by restoring to a stock Pre-Mango ROM. Just plug in the device while holding the volume key to get the multi color screen and then run the RRU Rom .exe and there you go.
Im probably missing something here arnt I?
I get an error 80180048
Too danger

It is not so simply. This method can work, see point 2 from my first post. But, 1. it is not working on halfbricked device, 2. it can fullbrick phone in any combination of RUU-Device-Brand-SPL5.x.
Better way seems original SPL downgrading RUU only - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411904

This article is a year old, from the time of the first WP7 generation. Also, several people promised linguistic correction and no one did it. I am not able to write english right myself, this is translated with Google help. But, enough people used it successfully last year. Many recent articles is there now on XDA. I writed here first posts about halfbrick solution possibility without special hardware and about SPL downgrade too. But, they are very old, you can find many recent and better posts here.
Need some 101 help and explanations. I am much more familiar with Apple and have only rooted one inexpensive Android that I learned to do from here. It was an early ZTC and although I rooted it, I did not learn that much because it was a very basic phone. Purchased a preowned HTC Desire 626S T-Mobile so it already has been updated to Marshmallow.
SPECS
HTC Desire 626S T-Mobile
Android 6.0.1. HTC Sense Version 7.0 Software 2.17.531.13
Developer options enabled with OEM unlocking and USB debugging checked. Unchecked verify apps over USB.
Have windows laptop computer 2640M processor, lots of RAM and Win 10.
1.) Can't figure out how to unlock bootloader
Went to HTC developer website. Entered in the phone - HTC Desire*. The next step says that if the software version that I have (2.17.531.13) is earlier than what is listed on their list that I have to download the RUU. So I look at the list and do not know which T-MObile entry I should be looking at. These are the entries that remotely resemble T-Mobile
TMO PL 2.15.118.2
TMO UK 2.29.110.6
TMO AT 2.29.112.6
I am in the US so I figured the UK one can be eliminated. That leaves 2 left. If it is the first one - then my version is later and I can go to step 2. If it is the third one, then I have to download the RUU.
So which one of these, TMO PL 2.15.118.2 or TMO AT 2.29.112.6 is the one I should be using?
I think I can then proceed and figure it out from there ---unless someone recommends a different way to unlock bootloader.
2.) How do I root 6.0?
Any of the instructions I have found are for Lollipop. I found one thread at Android forums (can't post thread yet) but it is titled. htc-desire-626s-rooted-how-to-ota-marshmallow-update-re-root.1055825/ but that talks about an already rooted phone.
Am I able to root?
Can someone direct me to instructions that really explain along the way so I can follow along?
If I am able to root, can someone recommend a ROM that is easy to work with and provide flashing info. My goal is to have a simple stock Android interface that I can play around with and get rid of the HTC overlay stuff.
Many MANY thanks.

Yea I had it for a short time however, the Sunshine app is the best way to go in my opinion
I have the same phone.
I unlocked the boot loader and the web site told me that same BS. I put in my unlock token and they sent me an unlock code. It worked just fine.
Thanks everyone. I sold it --- lol. I'm going to look for a large screen android that I can root.Wanted a Phab 2 pro but it looks like they are discontinued.
