Update via kies - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi does kies check for updates depending on the current country if so cant we change the server location with hotspotshield and get updates from other countries? And remove the sim card from the phone....

It checks for the country version code of your firmware. The only way to get OTA from different country release is to flash a full firmware from that country. It's best to just grab the newest from from sammobile.com and flash it via Odin.

rooted phone and firmware update

Hi, with the help of this forum I was able to root my gio so that went fine now comes the question. II hooked the phone up to the pc and samsung kies said there is a firmware update so I clicked it and I got a disclaimer that when you're phone is rooted that upgrade to latest and greatest firmware this might fail because of the root.
What should I do now, do I have to unroot it before I put the new firmware on, or can I just proceed with firmware upgrade with the phone being rooted.
Thanks in advance.
Jan
Samsung kies wont notice you with that message.

I'm unable to upload a pic since I need to have 10 posts before i can use an external link, I tried just a few minutes ago and the same disclaimer keeps popping up.

Firmware updates

I have T-Mobile s3 is there a difference checking software updates (ota) vs using kies? I am unable to get my phone to connect with my pc. Will one get updates faster than the other?

I noticed on www.sammobile.com/firmware they. Show 4.1.1 for my phone ota. Is this the official firmware coming from T-Mobile that has been approved.

No, it's a dev leak.

It will get you the same ota update once released, but with kies you can get that ota whenever you want. With software update on the phone tmobile pushes it out by region. So while one or two areas will get it initially, others will have to wait until their regions rollout is scheduled. This is where kies is handy.
Another way is to go to that link for sammobile. Once released they should have the full fw available for download. Flash that with Odin.
If Samsung ever brings their ota system back up you could find the smaller and easier to use ota on that same page. That would be flashed in recovery.
And of course you can be sure you will find it here on xda!

If I use the sammobile firmware once the ota update is available will I be able to use the ota and restore back to factory rom?

Otas patch your existing system files to bring you upto the desired build. There are no otas that will go back. To do that you have to flash the full fw file in odin, this will wipe everything and take you back to either original or updated stock.
So yes you can always go back, but not via an ota.

Of course u lose the right for ota by rooting.
I'm also from HK
I think you can search for firmware from samfirmware

If you have root, just buy / install mobile odin and download roms from samfirmware. Advantage is that it can pre-root the roms before installation.

Update not working????

Hi
I updated my firmware to the open Europe (oxx) last week. Then today I updated to the BTU firmware but for some reason kies sees the device as TPH instead. Is there any way I can get this thing back to official BTU? ?
Thanks
Steve

download Samsung Galaxy S/S2/S3 csc from playstore... you need to be root to use the app. run it and see if you can change the csc. a word of caution. it will wipe your data. so make a backup first.
No it wouldn't work. Something about it not available on a single csc device

When I connect to kies it says it doesn't support updating because I have TPH but when I do *#1234# I get the attached image. I am so totally lost. All I want is to have official BTU with kies support.

Well I was kinda lucky as I dropped my phone and it got run over by a lorry, so I got a replacement on the insurance.

[Q] Will there be a Lollipop Odin file eventually?

Im not used to having a non rooted phone and I was just wondering if there usually is a tar file after an update that you can flash manually through odin. I don't think I can update my Note 4 OTA cause I'm on T-Mobiles network and I don't think it's gonna do it? Appreciate any answer.
+1
I have the same question...
Same
Check the Sammobile site if the firmware is up there then you can download it and get the Odin file.
