S-pen causing reboot when drawing - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically my phone reboots after using s-pen for a few minutes whilst drawing. happens every time I draw for several minutes, stock or custom kernel.
Haven't seen this posted before so trying to figure out what the cause is.

Never heard of that before. Is it happening in a particular app or is it a random problem .
Does it happen while copy and pasting text? That's an issue which also affects other Samsung phones... Clipboard bug.

It happens with the s-note when I'm drawing something for several minutes.. I'm about to flash a different rom to see if it was a rom issue.
It's weird because it looks like it happens most when coloring in (filling in an object) - with the s-pen continuously on the screen. The phone would automatically go black and my boot animation would kick in.

I am having the exact same issue as you. The phone just reboot when I am drawing/writing in S Note for few minutes. This issue has been with me since omega v16 and now v17. Can I know had you fixed the problem after flashing a different rom?

How do I diagnose random reboots for my Note 2?

For the past 4 days my Note 2 has randomly rebooted at least once a day. I wasn't using the device for most of the reboots and just noticed that it rebooted because of battery drops. I don't really know what could be the cause since I don't remember changing anything recently. Is there any way I can diagnose this without root?
How about just flash stock rom? If you dont have lots of apps which you've used, then it should take care of problem without needing titanium backup which needs root. Just save ur data using kies and flash stock rom from sammy.

I'm actually currently on stock and unrooted. I was just wondering if there were ways to find out what caused the reboot such as logs and such? Or if there was an app I could install to keep track of what causes a forced reboot?

You could download alogcat from the marketplace, its free and will save a log of what's going on with your phone.
It might help find out why its happening
for me it happens cause the power button is so easy to press while phone is in pocket.
keep it pressed for some seconds by accident and phone reboots. even if screen is locked.

If your rooted run a logcat and that will tell you what happened right before the reboot, reboots are usually a Kernel Panic meaning something caused a big enough problem that it couldn't be recovered and crashed the core of Androids software "The Kernel".
As others have noted flashing a stock rom ideally via ODIN and then testing your phone may let you know if you had bad software or a hardware issue. Custom roms can have bugs that will cause kernel panic a stock rom should be 100% fine and reboot free
I find mine will sometimes reboot after copying something to the clipboard.

I had reboots on my previous unrooted HTC EVO. The problem was an app. I was able to diagnose the problem by looking at my install/update log. Basically, I uninstalled all apps back to the date I knew it was stable and waited to verify it was stable. Then added back one app only and waited. Repeat. About a week later, I added an app that caused a reboot within hours. I uninstalled it and the phone remained stable.
Here's where I found a chronological listing. If you have multiple devices, it will show all apps for all devices (tablets, vizio, phones, etc)
Google Play> My Android Apps> at the bottom My Orders & Settings.
This gives you a cronilogical listing of app installs and updates.
Mine turned out to be a call recorder app that I had put on the phone 4 weeks previous.
Seems like a Samsung issue:

I've got the same problem worth my note 2. At least I know I'm not alone.

Bad SD cards are also a notorious source for spontaneous reboots. If you have one inserted, it should be easy enough to retract it for a while to test it. ..
Note'd too from my N7100...
I'm also experiencing this issue. I'm using 4.1.1 Brazilian stock ROM here.
Even before flashing CWM (yesterday) I as going through this problem. Most times it happens when the screen is off.
Maybe changing the stock Kernel to a custom one would solve this?

[Q] Screen is dark suddenly having to restart

First excuse my English.
I'm here to report something that is happening on my nexus recently.
When I'm using it for a while the screen goes dark having to remove the battery and put again return to normal .
I see that it works normally when the screen is dark, because if I touch the screen it vibrates and performs what is on the screen, but do not understand why she is erasing out frequently, I've used other roms and kernels but it happens even be that the problem is on my player or someone besides me is having the same?
How to solve?

Generally a Kernel Issue. Which Kernel are you using? I had this problem before until I switched kernels and presto. Problem resolved.

[Q] s3 stuttering/twitching

I have tried searching for this problem but I must be using the wrong terms... so sorry in advance if I missed a post that addressed this issue.
My sprint S3 does this twitchy/glitching thing on every touchwhiz based jellybean rom (does not do it on TW ICS ROMS) I have tried. It basically makes it nearly impossible to do sliding animations, IE it can actually get stuck and start flashing halfway between screens, or when pulling down the top menu, however you can open new programs just fine if you are already on the right screen for them. Luckily it does not do this all the time, but when it happens it keeps doing for 10 minutes or so and its annoying as hell.
I figured this must be a rare issue even though it effects both my wifes phone and mine, since I have never read anything about it, however I just got a new replacement phone and it does the exact same thing, even on dead stock TW JB ROM.
Oddly enough I discovered last night that if I turn on my screen filter app it stops completely, but it starts right back up when I turn off screen filter..... any ideas how to fix this?
Try grabbing cache clear from the play store and set it to run every 12 hours. It helped my phone a good bit.

[Q] Freezing

Is anyone having any issues with their 2013 N7 freezing? I've had it completely freeze up on me once, and several time just today it has had major input lag (like 2-3 seconds later) or would just not accept input. It hasn't been localized to any particular app.
Is this a common problem? Should I just go exchange mine?
Seems like a software issue which can be easily remedied.

When I first got my new Nexus 7 I did notice some "freezes" and unresponsiveness. Touches that would go unrecognized (links in the browser, back button). did a factory reset and watched it in case I decided I needed to exchange it. But it is seemed to improve and I rarely run into the freezing.
I've so far not returned/exchanged it, but an still keeping an eyes on it.
I have most certainly experienced a heavy freeze period while typing on the onscreen keyboard. While typing in all the credentials on first set-up I experienced moments of almost 20 seconds of non-response, followed by all input entering as if it was lagged out network style.
Rooting and flashing a new rom, this has yet to happen. This is why I love Android so much... its community knows that it is Unix and treats it as such.
Yea mines freeze sometimes

yeah sometimes mine locks up for like a good 15 seconds.. hitting the power button doesn't shut the screen off either.. then when it unfreezes, it does everything I did lol like pull down the bar, hit home, and the screen off

Same issue. I think I will factory reset it + install cleanrom with the jassy kernel and see if it helps. If not, I will swap it. I love this thing! Its getting more love than my ipad atm, but I think I can make room for both of them in my already-gadget-overloaded life lol.

I have seen this several times with the Swipe keyboard. Since going back to SwiftKey it has not happened.

I was wondering if its really the kernal that's causing the freezing. My N7 2013 right now freezes after about 15 minutes of turning it on, and the only way to unfreeze is by holding down the power for 10 seconds. My tablet will constantly do this after each turn on, but once I placed it in safe-mode there is no freezing. I am thankful that mine doesn't have the touch screen issue though! but this freezing problem is really driving me bonkers.
I nodded off for a few minutes the other day when I had FBReader up and when I woke up and tried to exit it was non-responsive. I get the impression FBReader forces the screen to stay on, but perhaps everything else goes to sleep anyway? That's the only freeze I can remember seeing.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Sleep of Death

Problem: Cannot turn on the screen by pressing the power button sometimes. The screen is black or very dim, I cannot tell. One can see nothing on the screen, and it doesn’t accept any touch input, either. The phone still rings if there’s an incoming call. If this happens, the following several presses (about 10 - 20) on the power button will probably lead to a reboot. The “screen auto-rotate” and the proximity sensor may fail after the reboot, but will recover after a manual reboot.
Frequency: Fewer with higher Rom version. About once per day for 4.3.
Other description:
 The problem frequently happens when I just take the phone outside my house/office, and seldom happens when the phone just stays somewhere.
 The problem seems to be irrelevant to the remaining battery capacity or the uptime, but it never happens when charging.
 The problem seems to be irrelevant to the Apps installed.
 The problem seldom happens in the first 3-4 days after flashing a Rom, but happens more and more frequently as time goes by. My guess is some cache is stuffed by some trash, which causes the problem. The phone may be fine as long as the trash can be cleaned up on a regular basis.
 I manually reboot my phone at most every two days.
Solutions tried, but don’t work
 Flashing official ROMs 4.0.4, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.2 and 4.3 following the procedure “adb reboot bootloader; fastboot oem unlock; flash-all; fastboot oem lock”, without google wallet, not rooted.
 Turning off the auto-brightness control, as suggested by some post on the Internet.
Does it look like it goes to standby normally or does the screen show gibberish and then turns off?

Thank you very much.
I think it's standing-by normally even through the screen is black (or very dim, I cannot tell), since it rings if there's an incoming call. I can see nothing from the screen, and I don't think the screen accepts any touch input, either.
Does this answer your question? Thank you.

Thanks.
Was just asking if you had gibberish yes or no. In that case i've got a different issue than you (Suspecting f*cked GPU).
Have you tried a different ROM/Kernel combination maybe it's related to that.

No.
No, I just tried the official ROMs. Any suggestion?
Perhaps it's just busy in the background and running low on RAM. Give LagFix a try. Sorry can't link atm as I am on mobile...

LagFix does NOT help in my case. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
I've also had this blank screen with calls still ring issue for as long as I can remember, nearly 2.5 yrs.
I've always suspected it's my ROM and so I'd try out another ROM'S, BUT no other ROM works like how I'd like, so I always come back to my ROM.
It doesn't happen every single day, but it does happen very often.
I've tried using apps that auto reboot daily, but eventually this blank screen issue will return.
Unfortunately I can't seem to find any solution, so I just put up with it, it's like the 1 only flaw with my ROM.
&
Not to be at all rude, but I'm really glad op has had this issue from testing other versions of Android, cause then at least I know I don't need to give up my great tablet mode ROM.
LOL
I think I've finally found a work around for this screen of death.
Using Exposed, download/install this module/extension:
Disable Proximity
http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.mrchandler.disableprox
It does exactly what it's name is and ever since then I've not once had to remove my GN battery to work again because the screen went completely dead.
NVM
Screen still goes dead.
Anyone find an actual fix to this?
isajoo,
I had pretty much the same problems with my Galaxy Nexus running CyanogenMod 11 M12.
It got better by doing the following :
Blowing dry air in the earpiece… though the proximity sensor is clearly beside it. Can't do any harm though, I guess.
Settings/Applications/All/menu/Reset applications preferences (or whatever that's called in english) : that seemed to do a lot of good to my phone ! However, it's a very unsatisfactory answer on a technical point of view, as I still don't know WHAT was precisely needed. It's a "magic wand" solution for which I can't give an explanation.
Not specifically related, but greatly helped my phone in the responsiveness area : Trimmer (fstrim) (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fifthelement.trimmer), an updated version of LagFix that you may already know
Hope that helped !
(I wanted to try http://www.androidlegend.com/how-to-perform-proximity-sensor-calibration-on-any-samsung-phone/ as well, but apparently, /sys/class/sensors/proximity_sensor/prox_cal does not exist on my phone…)
