[Q] Phone randomly turning off - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So i have been using my phone without problems until, lately, my phone started turning itself off when it had plenty of juice (ie. 80%) and when i turned it back on it would have 0%, turning itself off again. I also noticed that when it does this i get LOS. I was on the CM10 beta or alpha rom when this first happened, so i changed to phandroid, thinking there was something wrong within the rom. But it is happening still with the new rom.
I do not know if it is battery problem, because it is not really swollen. Any help/advice on how to fix will be appreciated

By "it's not really swollen" do you mean its not swollen at all or it's swollen some? Because any swelling at all, even the slightest bit means the battery is bad. It will only get worse once the battery starts to bloat it doesn't stop or slow down it just swells more and more, faster and faster. If you put it on a table and it spins more than 1/4 turn it's swollen and it's bad. Every symptom you've described is a bad battery.
I like to break stuff!

It may not be the battery at all. Could be the power button finally giving up. Easy fix.

LOS happens with bad battery but not power button, power button also doesn't cause 80%-0% drop after reboot thats classic bad battery

I've dealt with enough bad batteries this last year on the et4g alone I can almost tell when they are bad just from the thread title lol. If theres massive battery drop after reboot or LOS and screen flicker b4 it randomly cuts off 99.99999999% its the battery pooping the bed

[Solved] My new T-Mobile Galaxy 2 just bricked itself!!

Sitting at the laundromat, watching a video that I downloaded thru the facebook app, all of a sudden the screen goes black. Thinking it went into sleep, I pressed the power, no response. I press and hold the power button, screen is still black, but this time it gives a haptic feedback. I press and hold again, it does the same thing. I removed the battery, waited a few secs, replaced the battery, and tried to power on, I still get the black screen and haptic feedback. Every time I press and hold the power button, screen remains black, no leds, with haptic feedbacks. I never dropped or water damaged the phone. Seems I may have received a defective unit. Production date on my box reads 09/28/2011. This phone is returning 1st thing in the morning!
Did you try to recharge the battery? That might be the problem

Try booting with sdcard and simcard off and see if that helps. If not you might need to return it..

How about restoring it to recovery settings? Boot via holding the both volume keys and power then clear data and dav.

have you tried removing the battery, plug usb cable computer to phone with battery removed, then putting battery in?

When I tried this, the samsung logo kept flickering very quickly along with a haptic feedback, but would not go into recover.

i might be a Samsung hard core fan, but this is definitely signs of a defective unit
This might be a Samsung thing, cause my old Galaxy Tab used to do this once in a while too.

This is what I discovered today......after the fiasco, I left my phone turned off while charging overnivht. Started my day off with a full 100% charge. I use bluetooth with my car stereo, and occasional talking. 2hrs into my day, I noticed that I still had a complete charge. Few hours more pass, still a complete charge after web browsing and everything else. I found this to be kinda odd considering my usage. I decided to reboot, and lo and behold, after reboot, my battery indicated less than 50% charge! With that being said, leads me to believe that actually my phone wasn't really bricked last night. More so, my battery gave the wrong readings, and while I'm watching videos, thinking that I have enough juice to do so, actually it didn't, which lead to the sudden shut off. I think my battery completely discharged without me knowing it.

[Q] What does this gap on the battery graph mean?

I was looking at the battery history graph just now and realized that there's a black gap on the graph. I can't figure out why that gap was there - my phone was on all the time and I hadn't suffered a sleep of death today. It looked like the battery recorder just had a blackout or something. Can someone explain that to me please? Thank you.
Means ur phone was booting.
Or it was off. Lol
Bored or an actual question.

If you actually read he said it was never off.
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
Oh wait I I read. I dunno.
If you were in CWMR then it does that.
Hi,
Maybe you don't see it (while you did not use it) but it's like a reboot, saw your graph you did not used continuously so maybe you have not paid attention to a reboot.
I mean a random reboot.
In any case, for me,each time I have this kind of thing it was due to a reboot.

Dude me and you are always answering questions alot together. Lol
Ah, the reboot explanation makes sense.
But then, doesn't the blackout period seem a little too long for a reboot? The battery curve dropped roughly 5% and it changed from green to yellow. I somehow expected that if a reboot was to cause a gap on the curve, it wouldn't cause a significant drop in battery level.

System crashed. It drains alot of battery when it reboots. A normal one takes 2%. Plus it's best to to turn it off and reboot if it does this. It could happen again If you don't.
I might also guess that with a random reboot, a few minutes of battery history might have been cached but not yet written to battery stats. So that'd increase the gap.

If you plug your phone into a charger or computer while on it will show that gap. Perhaps you were copying music or a soon-to-be-flashed ROM onto your phone for a few minutes.

Power Button??

So, my phone just rebooted out of the blue and the power button no longer works. sometimes it will get the power menu to come up, and then the phone will reboot if it is pressed again. I am running a VENUM hybrid ROM. I would not even know how to attempt a factory restore without an operable power button... anyone have any tips? I don't think Sprint would even fix this as I bought it from another Sprint customer

the battery moisture indicator is pink. i just cracked open the phone and I only see one indicator towards the bottom of the phone near the USB port, which is a fresh dry white. Don't think any moisture could have reached inside for whatever reason (not that it was wet recently...)
are there any others?
is there any way to power up the phone without the battery and test?
Mine does the same, it's started two months ago. It's gotten to the point where the phone reboots itself literally fifteen times a day. Very frustrating
Swyped from a Galaxy S2 on CM10
I guess I have the magic touch or some ****... just put her back together and it works like a charm I will be getting an extended battery I think. This battery is worn out and doesn't hold a strong charge.
I'm sorry to hear that multi, it's a true pain in the ass. I was just in touch with a Sprint rep and they said something about a $35 repair option?

My phone started doing that since yesterday. This is the second time it's happened.I'm thinking the power is stuck, cause when i try to turn off the phone. It always restarts itself. It's killing my battery.
This has been happening to me as well. It usually happens after chrome freezes on me tho. It did it for the first time not on a chrome page today. I think it's just the battery tho, it's been getting worse life lately. I ordered new Anker batteries so if it quits after that I'll keep everyone updated.

Something other than software is causing this to happen. Whether it be water damage, or damage from dropping.

[Q] Random power off issue

my epic 4g touch was on the cyanogenmod 10.1 wild for the night rom v. jan23v2. every time, if my phone were off a charger for 5-10 minutes the screen would flash to different brightness levels then turn off. it would do this every time since that rom. in order to fix the issue, i tried using sfhub's el29 root to go back to stock to try flashing the same updated rom. i was on el29 rooted and the issue still occured. i would have to plug it in for it to turn on again. is this a battery issue or is it something else? my battery is over a year old. any help would be appreciated. if you need more info, just ask

Amazon will have OEM batteries. Be careful though, some will label them like OEM but they are fake. You will probably be able to get a new one from Sprint or Samsung, though.

I've had good luck with cheap eBay ones for $3-$5. (~$10 for 2 + external charger, shipped from China)
Originally bought a cheap 1800mAh for my Epic, but kept it around and am using in my E4GT (when the orinal battery "puffed" and wouldn't hold much of a charge) Recently added a "2200mAh" one and external charger. It's a tiny bit thicker than my 1800, but still fits under the stock cover. I havent noticed the "2200" giving any better battery life than the "1800" - both work well and I've had no problems.
This issue is happening to me too but seems to occur when I'm downloading something like an MMS or app, or even an image intensive webpage. The screen flashes to different brightness levels and then the battery would suddenly "drain" to zero, where the software tells me it's at zero, but with a little extra charge and a reboot, the power level will be where it was before shutting down.
And none of this occurs while plugged in so I'm reasonably sure it's an old battery, I'd just like some confirmation. What gave it away though? The flashing screen thing had preceded a loss of signal so at first (and for about a week or so) I thought that was what it was until I found this thread.

Thanks.
When I went to get a new battery, the guy pulled the battery out and spun it on the counter. If it spins, it's expanded, and indicative of being on its last leg or already dead. Of course, you could also palpate the battery and you will feel the bulge but the spin test is simpler, definitive, and more entertaining. Just posting in case someone else runs into this problem or a similar battery problem and come across this thread - try the battery spin test.

Is My Phone Broken: JB Random Power Downs?!

I realize there's been other threads about the topic, but not this specific model and this situation. Specs...
Model: SPH-D710
Android Version: 4.1.2
Build: GB27
Anyway I haven't installed any new apps, obviously apps have been updating, but I haven't installed anything new recently. It started happening just over the past three days, the phone screen will flicker, like it's struggling to refresh then I'll loose cell phone signal, the screen will lock and then power off. When I try to power back on it shows the battery drained? I plug into a power source, let it set for a minute, it shows the correct charge and I can power it back on. It's happening roughly three times a day!
Aside from being annoying, yesterday I was on the road using it for navigation, and it crapped out. I had to find a rest-stop and do the recharge dance. Thank god I had a charger, otherwise.. well I'd have to find a gas station and ask someone, but really that's so barbaric right
So has anyone heard or seen this before? I'm hoping it doesn't mean I need a new phone, it's barely a year old. When it works I love this phone, but it's such a delicate POS sometimes, it really drives me nuts. Any help would be welcome

Ok take your battery out and sping it on the flat sides. If it spins like a top replace it.

Glad to hear it's a battery issue, however I'd remiss if I didn't ask about this spinning battery diagnostic. So does the battery's casing expand when it's going bad, or getting older? Or were you just screwing with the new guy
Screwing with you. Just kidding. On these batteries when they start to swell you can aldo notice an effect on the charhe it holds. I forgot who actually found it out. But when you can spin it feely its going bad. A new battery will maybe get a turn or two.
