Hey all,
Just wondering what rom people on this forum are using on their note 2.
Also, if the sound recording is an issue on official cm nightlies, does that mean all roms based on it like the unofficial, or vanilla rootbox, liquidsmooth have the same problem? Because they are based on also?
Thanks for your time
maybe it's time we run a poll for all the roms out there?
I bind around between a bunch, but I spend most time on the Jedi series

check the development section to see what roms people are using
and, yes, any problems that cm 10.1 has, any rom based on it most likely will have..
It's not easy to do an actual poll on here. At best you'll get pages and pages of people listing roms. No value add, no data collection or analysis. So yes, the easiest way to see what people are using is look at the roms available. And lots of people flash roms like some of us shower; what they use today may not be what they use tomorrow.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

I've been testing out a bunch of ROMs that go by just to see what works and what is needed to be fix (let's face it... that's what this site is for... It's a developer's site that lets us alpha/beta test out their skills and report what needs to be fixed). Each ROM has their unique features and such.
It's not a popularity contest, so no, I don't think there should be a poll since it will not matter. What does matter is if you find yourself a ROM you like, support it, support the developer by saying thanks and if you can, donate. Don't be afraid to try other ROMs as well. I've said this before and I will say it again... You have nothing to lose but a bit of time depending on how much you make a ROM your home. Find which one works for you.
Nandroid backup, wipe, flash, test. Like? Say so. Something broken that hasn't been reported yet? Say so.
Try not to treat this site as a free custom workshop for your phone. Treat it as a test site and be happy the devs take the time to do these things for us users/testers.
Check my sig. Best rom!

So I have tried most all of the top 6 ROMs. Clean Rom is very stable, Jelly Thunder has nice eye candy, but hands down the best ROM for me is SkyNote 7, aka Sky Wallet. Love the light saber sound for s pen. I worked with Seanz testing wallet, so I KNOW it works. I did put the latest Perseus kernel, Awesome beats, and Apex launcher on it to customize. IMO, this ROM is the pinnacle of Note 2 development!:silly:

Cleanrom is my choice.
I've been on CleanROM for a while, but right now am trying Jedi XPX.
CleanROM is a very safe ROM to use. It's as close to stock as you can get. Hard to quantify exactly how much better performance and battery life are, but my impression is that it is better than stock. Nothing that blew my mind, but when the Note 2 is such a beast from the start, it's hard to say that it is, or isn't a vast improvement. This ROM also pairs well with a couple of custom kernels (Perseus and Saber are the ones I've tried). One awesome thing about that the developer of CleanROM does is package it with Aroma installer, which allows you to pick and choose what you want in the ROM.
I've only had Jedi XPX installed for a couple of hours and so far, it's really good. Seems to be smoother, but I can't really say with absolute certainty. You'll love this ROM if you're a Star Wars fan as the developer integrated some Star Wars soundbites with some of the actions. The developer also added his/her personal touches like having "Jedi X" at the bottom of the lock screen and "Deviant Development" on the notification bar as you're swiping it down. Personally, I don't care for it. As I've just loaded it, I can't really say much about battery life yet.
Seems to me that you really can't go wrong with the two I've mentioned above and the developers are active in supporting their ROMs.
JediXPX is the best fit for me, the battery life is just insane with his Saber Kernel........its stable as ****, and runs super smooth. i have been on it since Jedi 3. something or other.
i have tried them all as well, not just the top 6 and Jedi seems to be the one that has them all beat in my OP anyway. but there works of art so pick one and run away.
Skynote for me
JediXPX is the smoothest ROM I have ever used. And I go through a lot of roms lol

N7105XXDMA6 is what I've decided to stick with for now.
Paired with Perseus kernel seem to do really well for me. I love AOSP roms but can not stand the absence of the S-Pen/S-Note features, then again, there are mods for N7105XXDMA6 that have allowed me to mimic CM 10.1 very closely with color scheme, features, CRT animation....all that good stuff!
After going through about 6 ROMs and trying them out for a day or two. The one I have settled on is Paranoid Android 3.00 for the N7105. The vast majority of this ROM is flawless. Super smooth running with zero lag, lockscreen or otherwise. PA-Colors is a really cool feature. I thought i wasn't going to care but it really evolves they seemlessnes when switching between apps, the notification bar fades into each one and is completely customizable. Photosphere doesn't work just yet. But I expect that to come in a few updates or so.
I simply hate touch-wiz. I hope I'm not alone in feeling that way. Also, after coming the the i717 running Slimbean, the stock DPI is just way to huge looking. Touch-wiz and the stock DPI doesn't make good use of the size of the screen. I like being able to scale down the entire DPI and make it look like I'm not looking at it through a magnifying glass.
Honestly I will say that I may not completely understand the power of the S-Pen but it has enough functionality in non-touchwiz roms that i don't notice it lacking. But I do miss multi window, I really do.
Im open to suggestions and skyrocket intrigues me. I think im going to check it out.
*end rant*
The Jedi series is top notch. My personal favorite. A very good stock rom but added a few things to give it a different feel. Love it.

Jedi is really a beast. Great Bergey life and smooth as silk. Also something g that is super important very little problems and very stable. I have flashed other rooms but nothing else gave this combination. The saber kernel is amazing also. Quite a few themes that are not even built for this tomorrow flash well with it.
I have ever recently just starting g reading up on Jdevil rom and it seems to be getting rave reviews for speed and battery. It is based on the new international base and said to be super fast. People are getting huge quad scores without even oc. Something to keep an eye on.

So had my note 2 for a couple of months now, and love it. I'm using stock (but rooted) 4.1.1.
I've got Apex launcher and most icons and stuff skinned to AOSP, though I miss some of the AOSP apps and the look and feel around the device of AOSP.
What would I miss if I left touchwiz? The rom needs to be *rock solid* stable as well - I'm only moving if it feels as smooth as stock!
Suggestions?
from my experience:
Stock advantages:
better Camera, Camcorder with slow motion video, everything regarding Spen that is going beyond simple gestures, Spen software even though you can get replacements for that (like Papyrus instead of SNote), Allshare Cast and working MHL and HDMI output through dock, multiwindow
AOSP advantages:
faster Speed, newer Android version including its features (for 4.2.2 you get lockscreen widgets for example), open community with many innovative design ideas like PIE Navigation or PA hybrid engine and the like, AOSP look (if that's your thing, it is for me), a lot less bloatware -> choose what you want to install
They are both as stable as anything you can get in terms of ROMs. In the end it's a question of what features you want to have, if you can live without the Samsung exclusive stuff or not.
+1 mrruin
I love aosp roms but im sticking to Tw rom just for the sake of camera features. .

In general I find battery life a lot better on stock roms rather than AOSP.
Honestly, you'd miss a hell lot. It would just be another phone with massive screen with AOSP. I mean sure, you get the stock android experience and all that jazz, but on Note II, I would highly recommend sticking to TW based roms.
You'd miss: A hell lot of SPen features (like Airview), Multitasking, Motion, Camera app, S Note, other apps like Polaris Office if you use that. And from my experience, far more bug free than AOSP roms - again, that's purely my experience, might be way off here.
Just get a good AOSP themed TW based ROM and AOSP apps. I'm using Project AOSP now, AllianceROM is good too, from what I hear.
I like Touchwiz based roms on this phone a lot more, not back in the s1 and s2 days, cm was way better, but now Samsung finally got there act together.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317
best aosp for me - carbon ... they got nightly version as well haha
best tw based - ARHD or Wanam or Monxdified (cant go wrong with any of them)
best mix of both world - project aosp
I can confirm alliance ROM. I'm running it on a Verizon note 2 and it is the business! Keep coming back to it even during my own confusion on if I should run aosp or touchwiz

Personally I think you should stick to stock. All the hardware works properly then, especially the camera which has always been a problem with the open source ROMS. You DO end up with more memory and less "blo
In fact jonatton has already said it all clearly.
I'm a firm believer in the statement "My phone with custom ASOP runs so much faster, now that half the features don't work properly!!"
ASOP was a good choice on a lot of older phones where the stock ui was too heavy for the hardware. The Note II is not one of those phones. It's such a mighty beast that nothing much can really slow it down. Has anyone actually been able to fill the ram up yet? Not me that's for sure.
Sent from the mighty Note II
I have to agree that the Note 2 is a better phone running Touchwiz based ROMs. When I initially rooted my phone I went with the Note-orious Prime ROM with the Note2 Core kernel. I then decided to try another ROM so I ran my Note 2 on Pacman, Paranoid Android 3.
Sure the Paranoid ROM was amazing in its customization and had a buttery smoothness, but thats it.
I lost all pen features, s-voice which actually works brilliantly for me. I had random weird system issues. The camera sucked. Lost all voice command capabilities.
The other day I had enough, flipped back to Note-orious Prime and now wont look back.
The way I look at it is that it isnt bloatware if you actually use it.
EDIT: to add I also had atrocious battery life with the paranoid rom compared to the touchwiz.
Interesting thread.
I also might start off with a TW based ROM.

Been messing around with note 2 roms, and I too must say that stock tw feels best for me. I thought I don't care much for Sammy stock bloatware, but as I installed AOSP roms I started to miss my s note, air view, s Pen gestures etc. Now I tend to stick with tw based. Love phoenix, bobcat, arhd, wanamlite and assassin.

to add on to what's already been said I've actually been bouncing back & fourth from AOSP to TW & I've ran into a little issue that has me staying with TW for permanent although I love the DPI options you get on AOSP the most important feature for me was that my Beats headphones would barely work on Aosp I'd always get complaints from people saying they could barely hear me..never happens on TW though..

I've been on Wild for the Night for quite a while now. I made a brief detour back to 4.1 when the OTA roms hit. It was nice to have my speakerphone working properly and to have all my microphones work when my screen turns off (I like to record myself whenever I do public speaking). So to go back to 4.1 and find those working was quite pleasant.
On the other hand, I found most of those roms had bugs of their own that made them almost impossible for me to use.
So my question is really, what's the most stable daily driver out there? I see a lot of 4.2.2 variants these days. I've messed around with a few of them, but have yet to find one that's really clicked.
I don't really care whether it's 4.1 or 4.2.2; I really just want everything to work and run smoothly. What do you guys recommend?

Hello all,
I have noticed a dramatic slow down in new development for the S3. Have all or most of the Devs moved on or is it that the new OS versions are just not worth the effort over 4.2?
Thoughts...?

I sense that as well but I'm really hoping the devs can do something with 4.3 before they really move on.

This makes sense if you think about it. The Galaxy S3 is almost 2 years old. Time moves very quickly in the Android space and there are plenty of phones that best the S3 in both excitement and specs.
That being said, the S3 is one of Samsung's best selling devices and is still favorited among critics the world over. That may be why support for the S3 is still continuing at all. However I am guessing that from here on out the majority of support will come for AOSP based roms since those are being actively developed whereas AT&T and Samsung seem to be pushing out major updates for TW every 18 months or so.

One is based on Touch Wiz and usually incorporates many of the features that come with Touch Wiz like the Motion gestures and "smart" software. AOSP Rom's are compiled from Google's own source code that you see on their Nexus devices and usually come pretty bare minimum. Most geeks like me favor AOSP roms because we get to decide what features we want based on what devs are offering. If we don't feel a feature only one dev is offering exclusively is necessary then we simply don't flash that ROM. Whereas TW ROM's you're always going to get the same features with the exception of tweaks and sometimes addons.

I like the custom TW rooms because they generally are faster and smoother than straight stock and they still have all the key features that I bought the phone for. They also tend to be less buggy IMO than AOSP in certain areas.
A good custom TW rom like S3Rx with a custom launcher like Nova is about as good as it gets on the S3 for me.
I also realize that 4.3 is probably as far as the S3 will go for updates but that's fine as I'll be due to upgrade my phone before I get too antsy for 4.4 or above.

I checked out the S3Rx thread and it seems like it's still 4.1.2, is that correct? I am using Dandroid right now and I would like to jump to 4.3 but I do not seem to be able to find and recommended ROMS that use it.
I have seen the Slimbean.net ROM and it looks OK but I do not seem to be able to find any reviews about it on XDA.

I was contemplating the S4 but I see there are many issues with Custom ROMS there due to the lock down of the bootloader. If I were to upgrade, would anyone here recommend a replacement for the S3 other than the S4?
Hey, I'm looking for a ROM that has the following features:
- NO bugs
- Must be stable, very fast, and good battery life
- It can be any version (4.1.2 up)
- Must be rootable and without knox
(I saw cyanogen team made a kitkat rom for note 2..how is it?)
Currently I have 4.3 deodexed, pre rooted, deknoxed rom with note 3 spen features but it is slow, has relevant bugs, and it crashes often.
I looked in the android dev section but there are too many rom and I dont know if they have the feature I'm looking for.
Thank you!
There's no such thing as 'bug free Roms' especially for custom Roms since even the ROM developed by the manufacturer has bugs in them.
But if you want to have a 'stable' ROM, you might want to stick to 'stable' or RC aka release candidate. These Roms should have noticeably lesser bugs than nightlies even though nightlies are quite usable as daily drivers. 'Fast and longer battery life' - Disabling animations and other unnecessary widget and apps like halo will make a ROM faster with longer battery life. Customs Roms are all rooted and knox free.
I'm currently using PAC rom and on a good day I'm able to make it last for about 14 hours or more depending on usage. CM is a no frills type of ROM. It should be fast and decent enough when it comes to battery life but its quite subjective and varies from person to person.

Well there are many other tweaks for an optimized battery life, which can be managed even without a custom rom
