GSM Galaxy Nexus [Q] - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I recently had to do a battery pull and noticed a little circle(slightly raised/black/with an even smaller hole in the middle). I never really touch manuals, I guess I should start. Anyways, what is that for?

Any one curious enough that actually got an answer? Show some love.

Get a screenshot of the icon?

I guess I will provide a shot of what I'm seeing. Its a little plug of some sort top right of the battery after the back is off.

I can't find the resource that led me to believe this is part of nfc, but that's what i keep thinking.

And since your around and were cool enough to help... what is nfc? If it is not too much to ask.

Near Field Communication. Google Wallet uses it, just like Visa pay pass cards. They have a little wifi-esque symbol on them. Ever hear of android beam? Transferring data from one phone to another without wires... I'm a little taken aback that you have not heard of this!
Edit: Though some research is making me doubt this, as aparrently I would be looking for a chip on the logic board as an nfc component. Found this: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus/506286-what-under-sim-card-slot.html...
Anyone else comment on this?

@bodh if you decide to recheck this. Thanks for the link. Yeah, I kinda do android on my own close to a hundred percent of the time. I think I've come across the option somewhere in settings. That sounds pretty cool - to transfer files from phone to phone like that. It became an option on jb?

No in was announced in ICS. Are you a new user?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Only thing is, nfc is limited, and its best application seems to be as a walletless payment system. For example, you could transfer contact info and like text files, but not photos. For example, on the gnex the feature is called android beam, and i once tried to beam a photo to an SIII, which has S-beam, and it would not work. Something like "receiving device will not accept large files". So bluetooth still dominates, but it is definitely worth learning about.

It is a port that an external antenna can be connected to, but which was probably used by Samsung for testing purposes.
And for anyone thinking about using it, be extremely careful. You can easily damage it resulting in a severing of the internal antenna connection.

[Q] NFC Chip

I'm a bit confused. What exactly does this NFC chip do? What can I use it for on the daily? What apps are recommended for the chip?
right now nothing useful
after ICS 4.0 then we actually get to use it more often
Not 100% sure, but it might be useful for the latest version of Paypal. It seems to support NFC for transfers between friends.

NFC (Near Field Communications) will allow you to pay for items via your phone instead of your wallet. Many foreign countries have already accepted their phones as credit cards replacements; Japan for example.
But, it does more than just pay for items. QR codes that we just started using, requires you to use the camera and it will bring you to a site or direct you to an advertisement. With NFC, you can simply hold your phone to an advertisement (that is NFC capable) and it will divert you to site/advertisement. If you are in the U.S, you can go to your nearest T-Mobile store and they should have a NFC sticker you can try it out on.
but in North America, we barely have any place that is actually using it for mainstream
it's such a rare view to ever see or find anything with a NFC tag to scan
We are still catching up. I hear in Japan you can walk up to a soda machine and buy a soda with your phone.

Yeah, it's understandable why though. We are way behind in terms of technology compared to other countries. Just about 6 years ago, we didn't even have 3G yet, but we are slowly catching up.
NFC is not garnering alot of attention because Americans are so afraid of the consequences of such technology. They are worried about people stealing information through NFC or hacking their accounts through NFC, but many don't understand that it is much easier to pick pocket your wallet or rob you than it is to hack your phone to steal your accounts.
Hopefully we'll catch up soon though Google Wallet is currently testing NFC in various markets and offering a 10$ credit for you to buy anything in the store they are testing it in.
I think people don't realize is they have been using NFC for years with Paypass, now Paywave, and now Interac Flash is coming out based on the same tech.
Gas stations have been using it too like Petro Canada ... actually most places I've been too here in Canada have NFC pay terminals so we just need Google Wallet to be available here and we can go nuts.
I don't think that's NFC, the ones that are used in Credit cards are RFID.
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but something I was curious about...
Though it's still in the "anticipated" technology phase, there's a lot of buzz regarding NFC with various review sites praising or criticizing newly released phones for the inclusion or lack of NFC respectively.
NFC, like any other communications technology, needs both the hardware and software to control it, right? Our SGS2's seem to have the NFC "chips" (not sure what the appropriate term for the hardware is) in the battery (not just based on what's written on the battery, but what the T-Mo SGS2 manual indicates).
Based on this, couldn't any phone out there with a user-replaceable battery (read: any non-Apple phone) be pretty easily upgradable with a replacement battery pack and firmware update in the future? If that's the case, it doesn't seem like so much should be read into whether a phone launches with NFC capability or not.
But like I said, I don't know much about the technical aspects, so I might just sound like a moron.

The NFC chip requires it to be integrated into the phone in order for it to work. The NFC on the battery most likely states that it is optimized for NFC, I don't think there is a NFC chip inside the battery.
There are already 2-3 threads discussing NFC in this forum. One of them includes some fairly detailed testing about what is working atm.

if you replace the battery with another one that does not have NFC, your NFC option will get greyed out in Settings
so they battery might not be the NFC chip itself, but might very well behave like the antennae as found on the Nexus S battery door
I didn't know if I should start a new trad or ask here, but didn't want to clutter the forum.
So I'm seeing that they are making a big deal with the Galaxy Nexus for Verizon on not having Google Wallet in it.
My question is-
Is it part of ICS?
If not any idea of when it will be release?
Will it work on our phones since it has a NFC chip?
Not that there is alot of places to use it at, but it would be fun to have for the few places to show off, lol.
Wallet doesn't seem like part of ICS
already played with ICS on many devices, and don't see wallet included
you can always install the hacked version manually
yes it works

Multitasking!

Think we will be getting.an update soon for.the multitasking ability like the international version?:fingers-crossed:
5 Main Issues with Sprint's SGN2
I posted this up on Sprint's Forum to show that they are handicapping their new phone; thought I would post here as well.
No multiwindow capability
No Apps to SD capability
No simultaneous voice and data capability
No wireless charging capability
No GSM sim card swapability
I'll probably still get the SGN2 and will be happier when an update comes later to provide for the multiwindow capability because it is one of the things I really wanted this phone for; besides the huge screen and quad core processor.
And not being able to move apps to the sd card is a step backwards when we are moving forward with Android. What is up with that? This could become a problem for me as I usually like to load up my cell with apps.
Okay, we also lost the ability to talk on the phone while also using an app on the phone. From what I understand, it is becuase of hardware configuration wouldn't allow this.
Then the wireless charging would have been nice, but Sprint removed the contacts so we can't purchase the replacement back cover that would have given us wireless charging.
Finally, while I don't plan on traveling to other countries in the near future, you never really know, so I would have liked to have a true world phone where I can utilize SIM cards from other countries for cheaper price than what Sprint charges for international roaming. As it is, Sprint permanently hardwired their own sim into the phone. Still it does have GSM capability = $$$$
Started out really excited about the Note 2, just not as excited now. Still need to upgrade from my Epic and this seems the best choice.
You read my mind...in all points. Thank you.

Are these not the wireless charging contacts?
Those should be the NFC contacts.
i'm hoping jellybomb ports it from the other roms. very jealous the other versions have it already...
I'm sure (or atleast hope) that we will get in a update. I was excited about the feature as many others are, but if not, I'm sure devs will later port (as another member said) it over.
If I'm not mistaken, the other variants did not come out the box with the feature and received in a update some weeks later? I don't see why this would not apply to us as well. Not surprised one bit ours didn't come out the box with the feature. The international version came out, got the update before our variant even came out. I would suspect that our devices were already in route (being too late) to apply that feature?
Either way, both my wife and I are extremely happy with the device. We knew/know what could happen going into purchasing the device.
Just my first thoughts on it.

Perhaps you've not been following the post. The Sprint version is missing the phone-side internal contacts for any wireless induction charging, so the phone, no matter what mod, cannot do it.
There *are* directions on how to mod the international and I believe some of the other US carried models to use the Palm Pre touchstone charger induction coils and bases, however, sprint fully removed this, and the SPH-L900 doesn't include these pins.

Wrong. The contacts are on the board. Get a replacement rear housing and back plate, problem solved.

If you really want inductive phone charging it wouldn't matter if there were contacts (hidden or not). Other phones that never had it as an option have been modded to work with inductive charging.

BTW, there is a thread showing the internals of the Sprint phone and it looks like the inductive charging leads are just under the back plastic piece. They just need to be tested with a multimeter when the battery is in place to confirm.

I knew about the last three but not the first two nor wallet or screen record. WTF? I don't understand the reasoning behind removing functionality that are determining factors to have this phone in the first place. Split screen was a huge selling point for me. Bad enough I gave up my keyboard. On screen typing just sucks, even if I can do it efficiently. Split screen was supposed to be a great way to reference from one while typing into another.
Sprint hasn't done one thing that is customer friendly ever since the iphone came to town. Policies and perks all tightened and done away with. Now phones are all gimped out with embedded batteries, embedded gsm sims and removed features. Did they take a Verizon 101 class last year?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Disappointed for sure. Especially with the no voice and data, wtf... Cant even take a picture while on a phone call. Thats just ridiculous.
Called sprint seeing what they coukd do for me since I had an evo3d with failing digitizer and not eligible for an upgrade until May 1st...
They offered me the buy up program for 65 $ to move my upgrade date to that day. Which was November 1st. Had to sell them my 3d back (which was becoming unusable with phantom screen touches) and got 53 $ for it. Went ahead and handed over my MINT OG evo as well for 38 $ ...
First night was rough getting used to size and touchwiz. But after a full day yesterday its becoming easier to accept. And now I find out all this **** is missing that originally drew me to this in the first place.
Now im really leaning towards taking it back for the sg3. Being able to do other things while on the phone such as even just take a pic is important, or sending a text while on phone. Or a number of the listed things missinf in our sprint version for that matter.
can anyone inform me about the gs3 being able to do voice + data?

[Q] Anyone else using NFC tags?

So I got the 10 pack + keychain kit from tagsfordroids.com. So far, the only real uses I have found were one for work and one for home. When I get my Bluetooth carkit thing from Dice Electronics this weekend, I may go ahead and program the keychain as well so the phone will connect to the car and such once I am in it. I am using NFC Task Launcher to program to tags.
I was wondering if anyone else uses NFC tags and for what uses?
I just got a few and do the same. I have one where I come home it turns on certain features, I have one in the car that turns on bluetooth, and one on my keychain that turns off WiFi, BT and a bunch of other stuff to save battery while I'm out. It would be even easier if someone would hack our nfc.apk so the setttings would apply at the lock screen or while screen off.
I use AnyTAG (free market app). It doesn't actually write the NFC tag, just reads the ID number from it (so you can still reuse "locked" tags). Would highly recommend it if you're the only person using your tags.

This was one of the first things I noticed immediately. Yeah, we know it's not much more to unlock the phone first, but would be soooo convenient.
I am moving this from General to Q&A because well, its a question. But I am very interested in how to use these better. It is a function out there for these phone that I think is not tapped enough. Maybe this thread will generate more information on the subject.
Thanks for the move. I struggled with whether is belonged in Q&A or not.
You have to unlock the phone to use them?? From a security standpoint I guess that's good but for convenience it almost makes them pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless. They can be programmed like a batch file, performing multiple tasks, not just a single function, but I agree that being able to do them with the phone locked would be nice.
I suppose though from a security standpoint, it does make more sense, didn't think of potentially harmful NFC uses.
For me its not worth buying tags for something I can just take a couple seconds to do or automate with tasker.

...? Where did you see that? And can it be done on a stock SG3 (not rooted or anything...)?
FWIW, here is a small 8 min video I just saw when I was looking for something else about some of the functions of NFC. He is using the same NFC launcher app that you are using as well. But also talks about how some Samsung NFC tags won't work with Nexus 4 but do obviously with GNex.
It is from Gigaom, off the Reuters news site.

Can't watch it while at work so I will check it later, but I have heard of some tags having weird incompatibilities and such. Every now and then, when formatting a tag or programming, I will get the weird error about the tag's memory being too small. Not sure if thats what the video is getting at, but I will check it when I get home.

Insider News from Samsung Korea internal situation...

Source: Korea Samsung Headquarters clerk (from my country) sharing with his friend.
Reporting:
- Several High positioned personal resignations.
- The Firm stands strong and united, instead of despairing over the situation.
- Samsung's Engineers are working overtime over a new technology that will revolutionize the smartphone market. Priorly, this technology was supposed to be targeted for the following years. But after the Note 7 disaster, they decided to push it for the next Smartphone release.
----------
Opinion: Sounds legit. Just wanted to share the news. Nothing official of course.
I guess these "high positioned personnel" are the ones who pushed for batteries to be made by Samsung SDI. What makes it even more disappointing is, the replacement units are still SDI batteries. While we've heard nothing from the China region units with ATL batteries.
Samsung should shut their factory down and just stick with the winning formula.

How do you know this? You don't. We don't know the cause yet.
Well! Tell them to fu** ing explain to us what was it they messed up so bad to infringe our personal property, safety and make us a ton of expences we will never get back!! Tell them they should be convincingnus they are not incompetent to make electronisc anymore in the first place!!
Its not the batteries that are causing the exploding. Its the tweaking of the software that controls the processor to run fast charging. Samsung tried to get a faster charge than all previous devices and screwed the pooch on the software. They can probably issue a software/firmware update but people will not be happy and it may not be a permanent fix.
I have turned fast charging off via the cable and wireless. I have zero over heating problems, zero lag issues, phone is acting like a phone. the real catch is concealing it when traveling on a plane etc.... That is the hard part. I will probably turn my Note 3 into my travel device for music and games and such. Like a glorified Android iPod touch. Ill just turn disable to mobile data and phone stuff, hide the sim card removed icon.
A lot of work still. Damnit Samsung.....
My note 7's (both the original and the replacement) have worked basically perfectly. They don't overheat, don't lag, really not a single problem. The Note 7 is by far the best overall smartphone made to date. Best display, best display to overall size ratio, best camera, waterproof, etc. Only two issues I would say are the edge display which makes a tempered screen protector impossible and a so-so external speaker. And of course the kicker - the non-removable battery. Had they just made it with a removable battery this issue would have not been a phone-killer. It is sad that the best phone ever made to date is killed off like this. And we still have no definitive answer to what is the problem? Seems incomprehensible.

That sounds like speculation. These devices have been melting without being charged. We don't even know if Samsung knows what the actual problem is. Hopefully it all comes out so we get some reassurance about their next phones.
I read a lil bit ago that they didn't know what the actual problem was which is why they decided to kill it. They had over 100 people testing them round the clock and could not duplicate the issue of causing one to smoke/catch fire... of course though they were an anonymous
person close to the situation.

Look, I get it, I want to keep my phone as well, and I am not sure what I will do. But to fly with it, while you base the rest on rumors, is plain irresponsible. What you do at home is your business, but getting on a plane with several hundred passengers and a possibly defective phone isn't (there's literally no way for you to tell whether your phone is safe or not). Samsung did after all improve the replacements as they are reportedly catching fire without being charged.

What features are you going to miss, love or are concerned with when buying the Fold?

Without ever seeing the Fold in person and actually handling it I going to miss a few features based on the Specs I've read and videos I've watched. Here's my list.
Features I might miss:
1. Larger front facing screen...my caveat here is if the screen was larger it would probably be way too skinny anyway and would look really weird because of the dimensions..
2. Iris Scanner - love this feature on my N9. I know it's already gone on the S10's but it just works so well.
3. Update :MST for Samsung Pay is Probable for all phones. From what I've read, we're only getting NFC at least on AT&T but their website could be wrong since Samsung says it will have MST & AND NFC. That is always the beauty of Samsung Pay over various other Pay technologies. Worked just about everywhere for me.
4. MicroSD slot. OK, I might not use up the 512GB but do love the MicroSSD option which is great to easily move files and backups around., etc.
5. Waterproofing. I'm guessing that the Hinge is the problem and it would be difficult to waterproof the phone because of it.
6. The Fold would have been perfect if it had an S-Pen...with a selfie camera in the S-Pen (LOL!).
Features I'm not happy with (but I'll still live with):
1. That damn notch with a bezel on the big/inside screen. Almost made me bypass the pre-order. If that screen wasn't so large, I definitely would not have bought the phone. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a notch...Oh well.
2. (I know that this should probably be number one) The Crease! It remains to be seen but every video displays the crease in some manner. I find it funny that any article that I've read where Samsung has replied states that the crease is only seen in these **pre-production** models and the crease will not be seen on the final Fold versions. I'm not holding my breath on this one! So many reviewers stated that looking at the screen straight on and/or with a different wallpaper that the crease is barely visible or not visible at all. Now looking at the screen off to the side, the crease can be seen.
3. The batteries. They should have installed greater mAh capacity batteries. C'mon Samsung! You're using 2 separate batteries, give us more juice. You know we'll be on the 7.3" screen constantly!
4. I'm not really mad that they removed the headphone jack. I love options but 99% of the time I'm using BT headphones anyway.
5. The cameras. OK, we have LOTS of them! But for almost $2000.00 these cameras should have been even better than the S10/S10+'s cams. This Fold phone is Super Special and should have had a little bit more (can you say 10 X optical zoom? Might not have fit though).
6. I am still not fond of the Bixby functionality in comparison to Google Assistant. The Bixby routines are probably the best part of Bixby. I'll probably bypass Bixby.
7. Bixby button also being the fingerprint scanner. I'll lose my mind if I continually activate the Bixby button instead of unlocking my phone. That would make me crazy so I would use other software to disable Bixby altogether.
8. Many early articles on the Fold stated that Samsung would give us a free year of Samsung Premium Care+. I'm hoping that when I receive the Fold, I'll be surprised and find documentation to sign up for our free year. I'm probably dreaming...
9. They should have offered more for Trade-ins. Only up to $300.00 where it was $550.00 for the S10 possible trade-in values. (I'm kind of glad though since I may just need to keep my Note 9 around for awhile).
Unknowns:
1. It remains to be seen if the developers will build apps to work with continuity and sizing, etc. If that isn't done then we might own a $2000.00 boring paperweight. I need my Kustom suite of Apps and if they don't work, the Fold will be almost useless to me).
2. Will the Fold just be too long to easily fit in my pocket. I never put any phones in a back pocket but occasionally put in front pocket. Most of the time it's in a zippered pocket in a jacket or purse or backpack or small waist pack. I'm really not too worried..yet! Hahaha!
3. We definitely need a variety of cases. I'm sure they'll come. The interest in the Fold has seemingly surpassed Samsung's expectations. Samsung kept the final Fold design under wraps so long that I think that's one of the reasons the case makers haven't delivered yet (or they thought that the Fold wouldn't have much interest). I need a super protective Clear Case. I want to show off that Martian green with Gold Hinge!! (and I want to look at it too).
Final observations:
With all of the unknowns and possible negatives, don't get me wrong. I want the Fold!
I love being an early adopter and have saved up for this thing. I've been following Samsung over the years and drooling at all of their foldable prototypes.
With Samsung's track record on gorgeous displays, I know I'll love the tablet screen. I think that the small front screen is not a deal breaker because I liken it to my Lock/AOD screen where I glance at information then move on to the larger screen. It will be just one more step to fully open the Fold. Not inconvenient when you know what's coming! A huge, beautiful screen.
The COOL factor for the Fold is priceless! I am so anxious to get it and I know the feeling will continue as others spot the phone and want to check it out.
If the Fold ends up being a fantastic phone for me, then I'll be selling off a few other Tablets I have as well as my N9.
This is going to be Big! Cannot wait to play!
What do you guys think?
I'm just hoping root comes easy and comes quickly. Do you guys think it will be rootable?

Based off of the limited amount of people that will buy and have this device probably not, but I could be wrong ?
I'll miss the spen even though I don't use it that often, but the main thing I'll miss about that functionality is being able to capture video as an animated gif (I don't know if this exists on the S series as I've only used Notes as far as Samsung's go). I'll probably use my old Wacom dumb capacitive stylus that's been sitting a drawer for a few years for the simple diagrams I draw in meetings using One note. It did the trick when I used to use an iPad all of the time.
The small screen might get irritating if I want to tap out a message as I already find it difficult using something as small as an iPhone SE. Although with keyboard customisation maybe bigger keys can make that easier.
The notch doesn't really bother me. A hole punch would be equally as distracting as a notch to me on a regular phone, but in a screen that big I can't see it being a problem.
I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode as it is on the larger Samsung tablets. That would be a killer app for me. I know we can use up to 3 apps, but it's not the same as having a few windows layered and tapping between them, especially if you're copying and pasting between a few documents and you want that bigger layout on each to see text placement properly. Maybe someone will manage to extract and develop an apk that doesn't require root for that.
With regards to the above, I used to have a Toshiba PDA that ran Windows Mobile and with it's 800x600 display you could change the screen scaling and achieve a similar effect. It was pretty great.
The thing I'm mainly looking forward to is reducing my travel kit from a phone, tablet, and kindle to just one device. Ok maybe not just one device, I'll have room for my Switch more often now. Airport security love giving my bags an extra search due to all of the gadgets I end up carrying, and hopefully this will mean I just sail through like most other people.
And while it may be an elitist prick move, I want people to notice it. Most friends and colleagues know I'm a tech geek, but nobody notices the tech anymore, as all of the phones and tablets look so similar. They don't realise it's something new or cool and don't ask. Plus, nowadays all it involves is showing off something a bit faster with more storage and a better camera. Nothing has done anything new for years now. This brings back that wow factor when new phones had something brand new and sparks conversation about the future again.
The US devices will have locked bootloaders just like the other US Samsung devices. Unless I've missed it there is no word on international devices yet. If you're like me and root is a necessity you might want to consider waiting until the situation is sorted out.
Edit... One other thing I ran into today in regards to a potential S-pen is that a reviewer was opining the screen was too soft to support writing. That was a stated opinion not a fact from Samsung. So a guess but not an unreasonable one; It isn't hard to imagine the screen not being able to hold up to a pen.
Here’s an important notice for current and future Galaxy Fold owners

The specs on Samsung.com for the Fold only show NFC for Samsung Pay. They did the same thing on the Galaxy Watches.

Doubtful on AT&T or T-MO devices... You know it's always that locked bootloader thing in US phones.

Looks like we'll still be able to create a gif from a video (you could still have done it on the S9's too). Here's a tutorial for the S10's so I'm sure the Fold will be able to make one too:

Also, it is Dex ready/capable.
Great points you've made in your response! Thx!

This would be great! I'm wondering if it's for Non US Folds. I'm hoping it's for everyone. I wish I had the eSim/nano sim option but not with my carrier (AT&T).
MST not listed in their specs but hopefully it's just incorrect. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm out of here. I'm a rooter and right now I'm now feeling the love with dropping 2k on this device and then killing the warranty. This isn't a complaint per se, it's just not the right tree to be sniffing around for those like me that will most def flog the thing. I do hope all who buy in enjoy the bejesus out of themselves. Good luck gents.

I was just reading AT&T version of the manual & no mention of MST, only NFC. THAT would be stupid to me & I'd really miss it.
