I found this odd, as I work with a plethora of different handsets, software, roms, etc and had not run across this issue before...but here goes...
I recently updated 2 of my SGS2 (Sprint aka Epic 4g Touch SPH-D710) handsets to the 4.1.2 rooted Odin One-Click I found elsewhere in this forum - SPH-D710_FL16_709589_Rooted_Restore - and it worked without a hitch on all three handsets I did...one of the handsets is no longer in my possession, but I noticed on the other two that when I connect now with CDMA WS (Yes, I'm running the latest paid version) none of the passwords will unlock the phones now. I do havve the password, tried entering it manually with QXDM as well as WS 01F2030F5F678FF9 and it rejects it. My temp fix was to revert to 2.3.6 to flash the phone in WS, and when I'm done I'll (reluctantly) go back to 4.1.2 for the benefits because it does work so much better, but should I have to modify any programming later, this could be a huge pain in the a$$ me & anyone else that tries to connect with WS.
I Googled this till I was blue in the face & didn't come up with a single instance of the security password being changed or any reference to a new password in 4.1.2 or the kernel so I thought I would check & see if any of you have ran across this.
So in a nutshell, my 2 questions would be:
Is it isolated to the One-Click update I used?
IF its not isolated, does anyone have the new password?
This belongs in the Q&A section sport.
Try this to see if it works with jelly bean roms: 2012112120131219
This is the same password as the sprint galaxy S4 and it worked for me at least. YMMV

Almost all of the custom ROMs here come with one built into the Sprint Hotspot app. Otherwise you can download an app called "Wifi Tether" from the marketplace if you want. Much easier to just use those ROMs though since they have other benefits.
If your on ics, download the newer beta version of the wifi tether and under settings choose your device as galaxy nexus, here's the link to all the wifi tether.apk's
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
iniz94,
the wifi tether on the market doesnt work and I do not know how to change my OS
xST4T1K,
I have tried just about all wifi tethers from the link you provided and none work except Version 6 is seen by my computer but i still cant connect and also I went into settings and changed my device to samsung galaxy nexus and it still didnt work. But when I was using Version 6 which my computer was able to see there was no device showing galaxy nexus obviously due to an older tether.
When I bought the phone it was called Samsung Galaxy S2 but people also refer to it as epic touch 4g. The model # is SPH-D710. Is it because the phone is newer to the market and no one has created a working wifi tether for this model yet?
The phone is a cdma variant of the galaxy S 2 line of phones branded epic 4g touch by sprint are you rooted? if youve never changed your kernel or ROM your kernel may not allow wireless tether to work properly you need superuser and busybox for it to actually broadcast the internet you may need to do a little research and learn how to use recovery and odin and change your ROM and/or kernel so you can have tethering support and sprint has blocked wireless tether apps on our market

Go to the market and get FoxFi. Wifi and Bluetooth tethering, works even without root, and it's not blocked from the market. And it's free.

I have spring samsung epic tough 4g.
I rooted it to a stock OS using a simple method I found on the web here:
http://epic4gtouchroot.com/epic-4g-touch-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-epic-4g-touch-newsph-d710/
I did not install clockwork mod..only rooted my phone.
I then installed the latest ver of wifi tether beta.
I cannot get it to work with Encryption enabled...it works in AD HOC mode without encryption...although, a few times the app crashed on me and one time my phone rebooted when using wifi tether app...seems pretty unreliable.
I searched for foxfi in google store....does not come up for me at all...does this still exist ?
can i install that on rooted phone?
What is your advice to me at this point?
Should I use a custom ROM or wait for a fix on wifi tether?

Any Gingerbread ROM. It depends what you are looking for. Please do not try any ICS roms until you're ready to do so. It can be dangerous to your phone if you don't know exactly how the rom and flashing work with ICS.
Here are 2 of the most popular Gingerbread ROMS out there:
Calkulin's 3.0 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
Blazer 4.1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363071
Calkulin's has more of a stock look and feel & Blazer's Rom is very similiar but themed blue throughout.
If you are not rooted yet, here is a quick tutorial:

I have gotten the Wifi Tether (for root users) to work. As the title suggests you have to be rooted for it to work and you have to be using the correct settings. Please see attached photos. You should only have what is shown in the pictures selected (nothing else)

Received Jelly Bean from AT&T through Kies this evening. Google Now is working. I'm not terribly impressed with it. The phone seems to run quicker but I thought it was pretty quick before. A lot of the icons for apps have changed. The camera has supposedly upgraded but I wasn't using the original camera app anyhow. I had been looking anxiously forward to the arrival of Jelly Bean for a long time but right now I am a little underwhelmed. What other exciting things should I be seeing?
Same here. I haven't really noticed many differences yet. Still awesome as it was before though.
One finger zooming in default browser...ability to have more than 8 browser tabs (this one is pretty nice)....other than that....PURE SPEED! Iknow its not the best judge but ive been getting quadrant scores in the 7k range consistantly ever since upgrading!
Edit...downloads go directly to extsd card now!

Vibration with Sound after jellybean update
I upgraded my AT&T GS3 to jellybean today and for some reason now my phone keeps vibrating along with sound whenever I receive any notifications... In ICS I was able to turn off this vibration so that the device would vibrate only when it is set to silent mode. Does anybody else experience the same kind of behavior and if yes, were you able to figure out how to turn that off?
I have Samsung SGH-I747 with Android 4.1.1 and Baseband version of I747UCDLK3
I think AT&T has disabled a bunch of stock features in Jelly Bean. I don't have the settings under Display to turn on Multi Window... which pisses me off if it is indeed disabled by AT&T

I already have it unchecked and yet no success... Like I menitoned prior to JB 4.1, the setting worked fine with ICS. Attached is the screenshot from my device
I'm debating whether just to get the ATT Jelly Bean.
The alternative is to find a rom that is
1) pretty much identical to ATT Jelly Bean (no known issues/bugs/unresolved mystery, to the extent that is the same as the ATT one, which is not perfect of coz)
2) preferably no ROM-built-in restriction of tethering/wifi hotspot(the ATT ICS rom checks when I attempted to enable these)
3) remove the crapware, though I'm pretty ok with the samsung calendar and email app.
4) minimal trace of ATT, though as compatible with ATT network as the ATT rom (Is this achieved completely by using the right modem?)
The ATT ICS stock works pretty good except for the restriction of tethering. (I don't plan to use it extensively, but would like to have the option open for occasional use, e.g. 10MB). Is that doable at all?
Given the above, which ROM would meet all the expectations please?
Thanks!

do a google search of my signature tethering is not unlocked yet but its coming
So this is a bizarre situation that I hope someone might have some insight on but to be honest, I'm not expecting much
For some reason my PS Vita will connect to my phone's wifi hotspot just fine in ICS-based ROMs like CM10, however it will connect, get an IP address, and appear to communicate but time out when trying to connect to the playstation network or anything at all when using either stock Jelly Bean or any of the various edits I've tried.
I've tried about everything I can on the Vita end but there isn't a whole lot I can do there other than clear settings, try static DNS, things like that. The only thing that seems to work is using old ICS-based ROMs.
Has anyone experienced anything like this, or have any ides for deeper diagnostics I can do?
Cm10 just happens to be jellybean so did it work for cm9 or cm10 or was it working with 4.0.x and not with 4.1.x or is it just 4.2.x its not working with?

I'm on Verizon and just got pushed JDQ39. It was totally working in the previous version (which I think was 4.1.1 but I don't know). Now, like you, the Vita connects, gets an IP address, but can't connect to anything.

I'm on a galaxy nexus, google results brought me here because my phone's hotspot works for all other devices, but not on my vita. I'm on 4.3
Someone tell me if 4.4 will work or what I can change, downgrade to, or possibly replace as a tethering app. I've tried all the non-root ones such as foxfi with the same results.
Update, it works with liquidsmooth ics rom 4.0.4
I've recently switched from Sprint to AT&T due to extremely poor cell / data coverage at my home. Now I would like to use my HTC Evo 4G for app development and for offline GPS navigation (it has much better GPS reception than my new Samsung Galaxy S III). I've searched this forum, and the other forums as well, using these search terms:
flash rom update without mobile data usageflash rom without mobile carrier planflash rom without mobile data connectionuse phone as tablet without mobile databut have not found any relevant posts for my questions. I've also reviewed several of the guides regarding rooting and flashing new ROMs on the EVO 4G, but they all seem to assume that you have a service plan and want a data connection to the mobile carrier. I understand that is a normal thing and that my scenario is the exception, so that's probably why my searches have come up empty. I'm simply wondering:
1) Can I root and/or flash a new ROM onto my Sprint EVO 4G now that I no longer have a service contract with Sprint?I don't want the phone to connect to the cell tower for phone or data service, which I assume would incur charges, during or after the procedure.2) Is it feasible to do ROM modifications or Android application development on a device for which I do not have a service contract?Of course I understand that features involving the mobile carrier would be off limits.
All of this can be done without service. It just requires you know what you are doing. Its simple enough to root, you need to know what hboot version you have so you can follow the according procedure.

Its like this, on your laptop you can make yourself an Admin without having Wifi
Same with rooting and your phone
Thanks. I guess I was just being a bit paranoid that I'd get some fat charge from Sprint for the phone connecting to the cell towers during some of the reflash and boot processes before I could turn off the cellular radio (airplane mode). Not sure why I was worried, considering that the poor service at my home is the reason I switched carriers anyway.
I now have an unlocked and rooted EVO 4G. Next step is to try out a JB ROM ...
Hi.An absolute noob to Evo rooting but not to rooting itself. I got a Evo 4g that I just want to use as an ultimate MP4 player for my kid. It's Baseband is 2.15.00.12.19 and is running 2.3.5. What root method works and has files that can be downloaded because I've looked at a bunch that seem obsolete now. Thanks
It's not the baseband version that matters when you're trying to figure out which method to use for rooting. It's the HBOOT version you need to check. The first step is to unlock the bootloader. If you have HBOOT 2.18.0001 like I had, you first need to got to HTCDev.com, create an account, and use the unlock utility on that site. Just follow the directions there. You'll need to enter a number located on the back of your phone underneath the battery, then they'll send a unique binary to the email address you used while registering, which you can then use to unlock your bootloader.
If you have an earlier version of HBOOT, there are other methods to unlock the bootloader. A little more searching in the EVO 4G forums on this site will get you better instructions than I can give.
Anyway, there are several more steps to do after your bootloader is unlocked before the phone is actually rooted. Since you've done this before, you're probably familiar with the rest of the procedure.
Hope that gets you started in the right direction.

Oh, thanks. But I didn't mean to imply that the cellular radio was an issue. I'm not using it because I don't want to - I no longer have a service plan with Sprint - so I intentionally have the cellular radio disabled.

Always or just once.) I bought this samsung gn 2 online everything was already done to it. I think whoever installed the macks rom must have left the the touchwiz on it. Because it keeps asking me when i do things, perform action using touchwiz or xperia I also noticed that i have goomanager on it. Can i use the goomanager to reflash this phone? If so can someone give me information on how to properly do it. i also read something about mobile odin. Which one would be the easiest to use?
You have too much going on there. I would relash the rom. Make sure you wipe system, casche and devick; may want to do old school and wipe three times.
Goo Manager is probably suppose to be there, by design from the ROM developer. That should have been in the OP on the ROM three, along with known issues.

Doesn't verizon run a slightly different hardware version from sprint? Are you trying to connect to the verizon or the sprint network? If verizon, there are two possibilities. 1 - hardware, the sprint phone just doesn't like the verizon signal. (unlikely) 2. - ROM, is the ROM the sprint version or the verizon version? if it's the sprint version I would say that framework differences are causin the issue and would reflash the correct version for your carrier (or the correct port - the hardware differences I mentioned earlier)
Have you called customer service about getting your phone set up on their network? About getting the IMEI number registered in their database?
In other words what have you already tried with this used phone in order to get it set up on your provider's network?
