Okay, I have a couple questions.
I currently have a rooted AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3, and I have a couple questions.
Question 1: When I wipe the cache and the data and all that, how do I save the apps I have on there and put them on my new rom? (ANSWERED)
Question 2: Will my contacts sync with AT&T on a new rom? If not, how do I save my contacts? (ANSWERED)
Question 3: (This could be an iffy question, don't answer if you don't want to.) What's a good rom that has good battery life but maintains good gaming? Or if you could just suggest a few good roms to start with, that would be fine.
I appreciate anyone who replies! Thanks.

1: If you don't want to lose app data, use Titanium Bakcup from the Play Store. Only way to keep app data when wiping /data or factory reset.
2: Sync your contacts with your google account, never will be lost again.
3: I prefer CyanogenMod. 10.1 is the latest for 4.2. AOKP is also great, there's 4.2 also. Make sure you do a lot of research about what a 4.2 ROM will do to your phones internal partitions. Or there are plenty stock based ROMs out there with TW.

Thanks for your help, now I just need to find out what a good rom would be.
I always hate this answer but it truely is the best way to go. Flash ROMs and try multiple out. I like lots of ROM but am currently on cyanogenmod. I also tried black jelly and urban karnage and loved them both for tw ROMs.

For Question 3 it's hard to define what the "best" rom is because there are many different opinions. I would look around and read up on the threads see if there are any issues and what people are saying about the rom. Try and find a video review on youtube and after all that just weigh your options and see what fits you best.

I tried searching for this, but the app seems to have some limitations. Please forgive if this is a repost. I have been on my 3rd rom for 2 weeks now but want to check out another new release. Long story short, I don't want to lose anything installed or subsequent app data. How can I back up and restore all of the non-rom data and have all of the new goodies of the new rom laid on top of the great app/personal data/settings?
Is this a dumb question?

Thanks both for feedback. So I can back up on titanium to sd then wipe all the cache etc, flash new rom, restore?

This is a fool proof list:
1. Titanium Backup all apps and data
2. Boot into clockworkmod and wipe data 3x
3. Flash new rom
4. Download titanium backup from market and install backups.
Thank you good sir.

Just out of curiosity, as long as you wipe the three things in recovery, will restoring old data on top of a new ROM from TitaniumBackup ever cause problems?
I've heard some people recommend not doing that, but never really gave any explanation.
Installing from titanium backup won't cause problems as long as you don't mess with system apps.

Hi everyone! Quick question for you....
If you are staying with the same rom and kernel setup, is it OK to restore system settings??? I've read numerous times that is advised NOT to do the system settings backup, but am unsure if it applies to my situation......
Thanks kindly!

Its never advised to restore system data as a general rule.
If you're on a custom ROM and simply updating to a new version of that ROM, you don't necessarily have to wipe before installing... you should be able to flash right over it.
Also... if you're switching between roms, it's generally advised not to restore app data as it's been seen to cause FCs.

I've generally never had a problem with USER app data, sometimes even cross-platform. That said the above is correct, it CAN cause issues, just something to keep in mind as you're restoring apps/data. Think what can I live without, what do I absolutely need, depending on the app, can its data be exported to an innocuous form that can be imported without issue, etc...

i do all three quite often...even when switching roms (i use my backup root and back up all three separately in the order system data, app data, and apps then restore in the reverse order).
just remember if you start having problems begin with clearing app data and move from there.

Hey all, long time no talk.
I noticed everytime a new ROM comes out you guys are always flashing. Is there an easy way to flash without having to "re-install" everything and keeping your screens the way they were previously? Or there is no simple solution?
Mike
Generally not really. If its a minor update for a current Rom u don't always have to erase everything but generally u will have to start from scratch. That's always the best bet for squashing bugs ect

You can always use titanium backup to reinstall apps, I'd definitely recommend dropping a few bucks on the paid version for no click restores. If it's an update to a rom I'm already running, I usually just wipe cache and dalvik before flashing, but you should always wipe before flashing a different rom.

Thanks guys

Titanium is a great ap. I have noticed that restoring aps with it can cause some issues and slowdowns. I always used titanium but now I prefer a fresh install. When u log into your gmail account u can set it to automatically restore your previous aps also when you look at the "my aps" section you can slide to the right and look at all aps you had ever downloaded.
Good luck, have fun and follow the roms specific instructions!

I'm with you. I used TiBu a couple of times, but had random crashes and stuff.
I do the full wipe now, every time. Stability is worth the trade-off of reinstalling everything
Titanium can be buggy at times but I use the heck out if it... I make a backup of xyz rom and rename it, then switch roms. Set everything up (if it's new to me) and backup/rename. For example I have titanium backupUKB, titanium backupCM9 and titanium backupSRZ all on my SD card...

I have been using GO Backup instead of Titanium lately and it is pretty good. You can restore all your backed up apps with one click; it only backs up user apps. It also can backup your messages and wifi access points if you backup that kind of stuff, and most of all it's free. I definitely recomend you try it out.

I only restore the user apps using Titanium Backup. I believe that should technically not cause any problems. Well I am glad it didn't the few times I did use it, so far.
2 questions
1) When I use goomanager and search for compatible roms, why does it show no roms were found? Im using stock everything, rooted.
2) TiBu, when i back up all apps and system data, it hangs on "com.android.sharedstoragebackup" Does anyone know whats wrong with this?
Don't back up the system stuff. Only cause problems when you try to restore it
As Mike said, stay away from backing up or restoring any system stuff.
As far as Goo...stay away as well even if it did show anything lol. Its best to come here to the xda Threads so that you can read about the current rom releases and updates. Also the Devs can add notes here better than they can on Goo.

Thanks for both replies.
I will listen to both of u.
but just for knowledge sake.
1) Why doesnt it show any roms on Goo
2) so most poeple would not back up system data? What is that anyways?
I did a full twrp backup, that should include everything, TiBu's benefit is having the option to restore certain items. Would any of those include system data?
A nandroid takes a full "portrait"of your system. TiBu only restores individual component s of your system
If you back up system info from say ics and then restore it to jb, it won't work out well. The framework is different
Not sure why it doesn't. Maybe an issue on Goo's end. I just downloaded goo on my note 2 and it is the same way.

what if its with another version of ICS? Would that be helpful?
Also, my guess is that it isnt really recommended to use Goomanager to flash roms. but do u know why im encountering that issue? EDIT: Thanks for ansering this one

The issue isn't really a matter of using it to flash ROMs - which really just delegates the work to TWRP, assuming that's the recovery you're using - so much as using it to find ROMs. You're much better off finding ROMs, say, around here, where info about the ROMs, support, etc. is right there along with the ROMs themselves.
It just Makes Senseā¢.
Hey everyone. Whats up. I am wondering if a complete wipe is mandatory every time when upgrading to a the latest cyanogen mod version? (To Clarify I mean from an older cyanogen 10.1 rom version). If so is there simple instructions that you could give me to explain exactly how?
~Fellow rocker
Thanks in advance

If it doesn't say in the OP where the instructions are, you are normally safe. You can always use Titanium Backup to save all of your apps and settings and them restore them after installing the updated version. Never restore system settings to any ROM that is not what you backed them up from. Apps are fine to do so.

Thanks Gray for your prompt reply, although to sum my question up more, I was really asking something different. You see I have an older version of cyanogen mod 10.1, using the same rom, I'd like to know how to upgrade to the newest version which is Feb 26 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2099881 without deleting my data. It kinda sucks to go through this process time and time again lol
~rockingfreely
The answer is in the OP install instructions of that ROM.

the reason you always wipe is to avoid bugs and problems. Even though you can get away with dirty flashing sometimes, most of the time its going to cause problems and lag
Do yourself a favor, buy either titanium backup pro or rom toolbox pro, backup whats important with those, and clean flash. those are the best way to keep things while avoiding problems
