Wondering if i can get some advice from some fellow members. I'm heading to Bahamas Sunday and i just called Verizon to find out what roaming fees would be like. Well to make a long story short, they but rape u very badly (.50/ text, 1.99/min, $25/mb of data!).
I did a test and was surprised that when airplane mode was on, that my WiFi still wouldn't work. I want to kill all data connection other than WiFi so i can use Google voice to text and make calls over the hotels WiFi. Is there a way to do this?
I was thinking that i could just kill data, however the kicker is there is also a charge for each text i receive also, even if i do not open it!
Any advice would help!!!!

You can turn airplane mode on, then manually turn WiFi back on as well. Cell data should remain off.

Anyone have a short way to disable mobile networks except for WiFi while roaming? I'm taking a trip to the Caribbean, and I would rather use Google Voice and free WiFi than pay Verizon $1.99 a minute. Already have GV set up, just want to know how to disable the other data/voice network connections, or if that's even possible.
Also - if I've got WiFi Tether running in AP mode, can I bridge between my phone and the WiFi provider? The hotel I'm at charges you on a per-device basis (which really sucks), so I figured I'd run WiFi tether and just connect my laptop to the network via cell phone.
wifi on your device only goes one way, you can't use wifi to get data AND transmit data. you're either getting data via wifi, or you're using the network to get data, and transmitting data via wifi. i'm not sure of an option (like on a laptop or pc) which allows ISC (internet sharing)
RE: original question, airplane mode will disable all network connectivity except wifi.
Thanks Patches - didn't even try it out, had just assumed that Airplane mode meant all data went off, including WiFi.
Guess the solution to my roaming issue should be to disable roaming on the data side, and just not answer any voice calls that are incoming.
find out if google voice works on wifi.
also you'll have to consider sms fees also. i'd suggest contacting your carrier (vzw i assume) and tell them what you have in mind, and ask what charges to expect based on usage. how much for incoming and outgoing calls, txts and data. then approach each category and find possible solutions.
best bet is to pony up and get a prepaid phone for voice and txt charges, and wifi for data use on your android. FYI, you can send email to people's phone numbers. "ten digit number"@"carrier name".com (google to find out specifically the domain per carrier)
i don't travel internationally so i'm not very good at it, but i find prepaid phones are less expensive than the roaming charges, or calling cards.
Hi I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus and today I simply stopped receiving signal on it. I don't know how or why. I didn't flash anything or even use my phone at all. At one point it was working fine, then I noticed that where my signal bars should be, I have nothing but greyed out bars and an "X" on top of that. This was hours ago. I called T-Mobile(I use T-Mobile Prepay) and they had me do several things like remove battery and sim, and nothing helped. I have a custom ROM(Black Bean). I have used this ROM for weeks with no issue. Just to make sure I did a nandroid and I restored my old Stock-Rooted ROM. Still no signal. I then did a full wipe did a full wipe and installed Black Bean 3.1.2(older version which I know for a fact works fine) on a clean install. Still there is no signal. If I try to make a call, it tells me to turn off Airplane mode before making a call. But I am 100% that Airplane mode isn't on. I can go and turn it on, then back off even. Still I have no signal. I have no way of knowing if this is my phone or T-Mobile having tower problems. I called but they don't know anything since it was the pre-pay support line call center in India.
I have been generally disappointed with T-mobiles service. I would gladly give up the rest of my current month and re-subscribe to Straight Talk with ATTs Towers right now, but I'd have to get service going with them again and that would cost 45 bucks. And it's a waste if there is something wrong with my phone. So now I don't know what to do! =/
Edit: Quick update, I put in my Straight Talk SIM thinking that even if it were out of minutes, it would at least let me connect to the towers so that I can add more. Still nothing. If I hold down power(under stock) it brings up the power screen and that tells me that Airplane Mode is on even though I have it off in settings. If i click on that message, it says "Airplane Mode is OFF" but it isn't really, because if I go out and back in again, it's back to saying that it's on. However, I do have it turned off in my settings. I will also mention that WIFI does work.
Check if you activated the 2G option under Mobile settings. I had a similar issue a few weeks back. Almost drove me mad.

Sounds like your phone is the problem if there's discrepancies about whether airplane mode is on.
I under that Sprint VoLTE may get rolled out next year which may fix this problem.
My hotspot works on my Note 4 but if I receive a phone call or a text message it automatically shuts down and I receive the following error. "Unable to connect to data network, turning off Hotspot"
I know I can't surf and talk on the phone at the same time but is there a way for the hotspot to stay on so when I hang up the phone I can go back to surfing?
This is an major inconvience because I have my Note 4 tied to my home phone system through bluetooth. My Note 4 stays upstairs in a window where I get the best reception in my house. So when the hotspot errors, I have to go upstair and turn it back on.
Any advice?
Thanks.

+1 Very annoying indeed. I have the same problem... It's especially annoying because I set up Google voice to answer all my calls but as soon as it rings from hangouts I lose Internet connection and the voip call drops. Then the phone goes to cellular and I have to answer the phone that way... How do I prevent this? Not call screening I hope.
Easy fix - don't use Sprint for your ISP.
Some of us don't have that option.
That's fine, just realize that you're violating the T&C of your contact and leaching the bandwidth for the rest of us. If you do this, don't EVER complain about crappy download speeds on LTE or 3g since it's probably just someone using that tower as their personal pipeline. RIP unlimited data if this continues.
And there is a fix, use the search function.
Pilotmills, do you have a link to the fix?
Or, do you know what words I should search on?
I can't find the fix.
Thanks.

I recently picked up a Note 4 for my wife and it's unrooted, locked up normal everything. It's on 5.1.1. Where she works, they do not get good cell reception (mostly not at all) and her phone is always searching for service even when she's on the company WiFi.
How can I make it stop searching for service? She does have advanced calling turned on as well.
You'd have to put it in airplane mode, and then turn on wifi separately. This will shut off the cellular radios, she won't receive any calls or texts (unless she's using Message+) and this will save a lot of battery.
Go into wifi settings and un click always search for available wifi. Enable airplane mode to kill the modem from searching for service.

Hi all!
So I'm on holidays in the US, and coming from Europe I don't want my data to be activated, since i would have to pay an unreasonable amount of money per day. So i deactivated the roaming option in the settings menu, but the data was on after an hour, which resulted in me paying 24h of data.
So to avoid this to happen again, i deactivated mobile data altogether, but the data keeps turning on!! So i paid another 24h. Now i switched on plane mode, but then i cannot get sms or anything.
Does anyone have this issue? Or how to fix it?
In the attached screenshot, you can see how mobile data and roaming are deactivated, but the H+ is still active in the corner.
Thanks!
Did you try restarting the phone with the phone in airplane mode and without airplane mode?
The thing is if I do that and checked if it worked i might be charged again. It was just in case someone had the same problem and knew the solution
