Is it possible to cook a custom rom or just a rooted one for the Lumia 900 and flash it via care suite like an official update?
If it isn't why?
It's because most of them are locked bootloader and still no solution to unlock.

Okay but if you flash it via care suite it should be recognized like an official update, i mean that you don't have to root the phone but just flash a rooted firmware like it's an official one.
So now, how will we root some firmware and flash it like an official update?
To do that you'd have to get Nokia's private signing keys from somewhere (Most likely on a build box somewhere in Helsinki) and sign the update to appear as a legit Nokia rom.

No, the private key is most likely in the bootloader somewhere.
Nope, the bootloader only has the public key.

I used Nokia Care Suite to get the AT&T Tango update for my cyan Lumia 900. Since then, I've seen a couple of older posts (pre-Tango) that talk about not being able to update your phone through Zune if you used Nokia Care Suite to update a device, but the thing I can't lock down is if that is only if the ROM used was not an official one. Does anyone have any feedback on this issue? Have I hosed myself a little and now I can ONLY update using NCS or since I used the official ROM, am I still good to update through Zune whenever another update is available? Thanks, and sorry if I'm asking a questions that's been answered before .
Relax. If you flashed the official ROM designated for your phone then you're good to go. The Zune update installs the latest ROM in steps (3 in the latest update) file by file and leaving data/settings in place. Flashing wipes the device and replaces everythng with a factory fresh ROM image that already includes both the latest OS and Nokia firmware tweaks.
Cheers

One of the great things about xda, things do go untried. Maybe there has been no success in breaking the OS, but the people around here push everything else.
I didn't know for sure if using Nokia Care suite would allow me access to the future updates. So, I used the Suite to downgrade from tango. Plugging into Zune immediately triggered the Tango update packages, all 3 of them.
I figure if it works going backwards, it will work going forwards. So, as the last responder said...Relax, you're good dog.

In Nokia Care Suite, if you want to experiment and flash your phone with an update not yet available for your product code, you can rename another ROM with your own code and it will work, but then your phone is "walshed" - ie; won't update through Zune but you can always reflash.
As mentioned before, as long as you use the ROM with name matched to your own product code, Zune will work fine.
Hopefully this hasn't already been answered somewhere but I've looked all day and can't find anything. I bought my Z1 compact from Clove and am using it on T-Mobile's network in the US (Utah). Will I ever get an OTA update allowing me to install the new KitKat firmware or is my only option to download it from here and figure out how to use the flashtool and all of that? I haven't done anything to modify it except changing the APN so my MMS messages would work. If my only option is downloading and using the flashtool etc can someone direct me to the minimum changes necessary in order to upgrade to KitKat?
Thanks

Google "PC Companion" and install it. Launch it, then plug your phone in. It will detect phone and should allow you to install update.
I'm on Telus in Canada and no OTA update came, so I did the PC Companion root.

Download one of the ftf at xda and flash with flashtool. (Plenty of guides) That is if you can't wait a week orso for it to land your region
I bought my phone handset only and unlocked, I'm from the UK and heard that 4.4.4 is out, yet I cannot download it. I remember having trouble getting the z1c to update to the version I'm currently on, I cannot remember what I had to do, but frigging Sony Companion even says it is up to date.

Since your phone has an unlocked boot loader, it will have problems downloading the official phone updates released by Sony. You may have to manually flash 4.4.4 to your phone via some other third part software.

He means unlocked to any networks, not bootloader unlocked.
I also bought a SIM free device in the UK and I haven't had the update either on the handset, or by plugging it into a PC. It is based on serial number, so the newer your device, the longer it will take to get the update. I bought mine in April.
I got mine from Clove since the black model was available .. still no update.
updates are based on cust. numbers. i am thinking to flash it with flashtool to 4.4.4 and then just download the cust number ftf file when its out.
No update out in Switzerland too.
Install the Flashtool, download a ftf, flash the ftf, done, simple.

Hi Gjole,
Could you just help me a short step by step method "to flash it with flashtool to 4.4.4". Or send a link on how to do this.
I'm stuck on 4.4.2 (see my other thread yesterday in forum), so I could update but Sony give me a error message.
How could I get "cust number ftf file"?
Tks in advance.

Here is my guide#5 step by step if you still need it.
I just tried to update via downloading and then letting the phone install it, but it just rebooted me into recovery and when I clicked reboot and the phone turned back on, it said the update was corrupted.
Or do I not need to worry about OTA's anymore? Going to be flashing CM13 whenever it becomes available anyway.
Interested in the response to this, my strategy will be to stay stock for a week or two to get OTA updates, then root when good custom rom is available, on the assumption the dev will update rom with OTA updates. I'm new to HTC so please let me know if this approach is flawed

Hello guys
You can't use OTA's when you change the original recovery. You need to reflash it to HTC version to complete the update.
All explanations can be find there :

Step 8 is your answer.
Hi guys I'm having same problem. I rooted my HTC10 and now I can't install official updates. My question is: it's really a problem that? Never Upgrading anymore my smartphone I'm going to loose something important?
And when this device will be upgraded to Android N what happens?
Rooting it I blocked forever my device? Never more official updates?
Please let me know

It is a problem you should always be up to date with your firmware. This problem can be resolved BY flashing the RUU for your device.
Excuse me yldlj, what RUU means?

Thank you CoCrop18 for your post.
I read links and now I've an answer for the community:
Someone is considering to have a workaround that allow to install OTA updates (original or modified by community) in rooted htc10?
Or can we stress HTC to release OTA for rooted devices too because they allow us officially to root it?
Hey,
I just ordered a xiaomi mi 5s from gearbest and i was reading arround and it seems that it has a vendor rom that can have bloatware and bad translations and it can be bugged, so my question is what is the most efficient way to backup stock gearbest rom including kernel recovery etc? Because if i install a modified rom on my phone it gets voided by gearbest and i lose warranty, so i need to backup stock rom so i can restore all the things like it came if something happens.
Thanks
In order to make a full backup or to install a custom rom you need to unlock the bootloader.
Bootloader unlock = warranty void

but you can relock it back and in the gearbest website it says this "This Android/Windows device is designed to function specifically with the current Android/Windows OS installed on it. Any alterations such as upgrades, modding with custom ROMs, rooting or flashing the Android device with other firmware will automatically void the device's warranty." it doesn't talk anything about bootloader only roms so if i restore stock rom, remove custom recovery and relock bootloader it's all good am i correct?
When your phone arrive, just download the global rom, connect your phone to PC, create the folder named downloaded_rom on sdcard, put the global rom, go to updater app, select to install the rom and it's all done.
You don't even have to unlock BL or anything and you'll have the global stable rom with ota updates available and no bloatware.
Hope it helps.

Yes. It works.
Usually when its a Fake Rom (Shop Rom), worked out great for mine bought from Banggood.
It has been reported however that this does not work if you installed a chinese version.

Nice i will try but it does not void warranty? it's not better backup stock rom because in the website it says this "This Android/Windows device is designed to function specifically with the current Android/Windows OS installed on it. Any alterations such as upgrades, modding with custom ROMs, rooting or flashing the Android device with other firmware will automatically void the device's warranty." with upgrades they are saying that the updates can void too?

I don't see how this would affect warranty given that the rom that came on your phone was a fake, bloat and aware infested rom. Also unlocking BL is given by Xiaomi itself.
But i don't know anything about Chineses legislation on this. You're most likely on your own risk.
