Use S3's wifi for my laptop? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I was wondering if there was anyway I could use the S3s wifi connection for a laptop. Not tethering using 3g
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Do you mean like this:
Wifi Hotspot > S3 > Laptop
?
If you do, you could use CWM tether (its usb tethering) or Wifi tether for root users (works if your phone is connected to Wifi but some people have had issues with that, I have not)

Kinda like ad-hoc but having it emit from the phone

Let me see....
You have someone Wi-Fi key stored in your phone, and want to share it to your laptop?
Try with Bluetooth, or in Play "Wi-Fi key recovery"
Also you can clone your phone mac address.

Tethering is using 3G. There's no other way to share data. Are you rooted?

Yeah...what he said...because if its wifi to phone to laptop then you might as well connect to the wifi directly right? Idk, I still dont really understand what you're trying to do

One of my laptops doesn't have a 5Ghz network card and since my phone can connect to that band, I was wondering if there was an ad-hoc like thing for android.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

I'm still not understanding what you want to do. Why don't you just connect to the network from your laptop and leave the phone out of the process?
This phone can not emit WiFi and use WiFi at the same time. Does that answer your question?

Alright it answers my question

Ahh ok, I've done that before on an OG evo AND evo shift, so it is possible...now whether it would work on this phone, I' don't know, some people have had issues but look around and try all the apps you can find to see if they will do the trick
I used wifi tether for root users v2.2/v2.1 (can't remember which one it was) and it worked flawlessly, just a lot of battery drain but thats to be expected

You can use your WiFi and tether at the same time?
I can USB Tether WiFi (like a network adapter), but I've never been able to tether my WiFi connection.

I'm currently having issue with my Wifi Tethering with the TrevEMod. it keeps saying "What the hell...." i've searched thru the forums and tried all the fixes and it still disconnects. Any word on this?

[Q] WiFi Hotspot when connected via WiFi

So after finding a cheap(er) was of getting mobile internet whilst I am roaming in Europe this summer, my plan is to use my Desire as a mobile hot spot and connect other phones and laptops via it as needed.
I have tested this and it works fine.
But I also have an iPass client installed on my phone which is great for hotel wifi etc but I was wondering if there was any way to make the phone act as a wifi hotspot even when it is using wifi itself to connect to the internet?
Thanks
Dun think so. Possibly there is an app on the market that does it. I do know that wifi will get disabled when u activate hotspot though. Tried routing my wifi through my phone. Doesn't work

No. The hardware is either doing one thing or the other...can't do both. Unless you can find a phone with more than one Wifi chip in it.

[Q] EVO Ad-Hoc detection

i have been doing some searching within in the forums and on google with no avail... My Evo (along with many others from what i researched) has the inability to see adhoc networks even though it can "see" the network with the the wifi analyzer app. i thought it was an android thing but my friend was able to connect to my adhoc network with his DX. is there a workout around that maybe i am overlooking so my phone can see and connect to an ad-hoc network? i am running ava-froyoZ1
Does anyone have the same problem?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Is your wifi buggy? I don't have any problems connecting to any network, unless its open but is password protected.
I am assuming not... I can connect to every WiFi network except for an ad-hoc. My phone WiFi settings won't even see the ad-hoc network. When I use the WiFi analyzer though it can be seen.

Had the same problem here on stock, I think CM does address this, but I already switched to a real router before I upgraded
I don't think the person that responded knows what an ad hoc network is
True Indeed

Can't tether phone to Iconia?

I was really considering buying an Acer Iconia until I used my aunt's. I tried using barnacle on my rooted Droid X2 to get online, but the tablet wouldn't pick it up. I understand that barnacle is an ad-hoc connection, and that there's some threads about enabling ad-hoc or something on this subforum. Is there any way to tether my phone to the tablet? Or is it hopeless? If there is, then I just may buy one.

Once you get root access, it's actually really easy! It's just copy-and-pasting the file on the link to the location.
...or just use PdaNet Tablet (Beta), free @ the Market.
I've been using "open garden wifi tether" on my phones forever and have never had any connection problems. Its free on the market, I use it in conjunction with "tablet talk" and I just do everything except calling from my tablet.

I've tethered many devices in the past...iPhones, Android phones, tablets, laptops, PSPs, etc. I'm using OpenGarden and I can tether two different laptops just fine to my Nexus S, but for some reason my A100 CANNOT see the network. No security, broadcasting...even when manually adding the network...am I missing something? The phone and tablet are right next to eachother, and I even tried seperating them to make sure it's not that they're TOO close.
I know I've read the A100 may have weaker wifi than one might hope for, but it works just fine throughout my house to connect to my wifi network - I can't see why it wouldn't see a phone broadcasting right next to it?
And this isn't an AD-HOC connection, so I can't imagine I would need to root the tablet for it to work. Any ideas?
Edit: Nevermind, forgot the phone has a built in tethering app (that I don't like because it lacks Access Control) and that worked just fine, so whatever problem I'm having must be OpenGarden related.
I've been trying to tether my Iconia A100 (not rooted) with my HTC Evo 3D (which is rooted).
I've tried using the Sprint Hotspot and the Android tether. In each case, the tablet sees the connection and seems to connect and it works for a little while, but after a short time even though it seems to be connected, there is no WiFi connectivity.
I just tried PDANet/FoxFi and FoxFi gave a message that the WiFi hot spot isn't supported on HTC phones. I tried the BT tether and again it seemed to connect, but there was almost no connectivity. Same thing happened with OpenGarden (that seemed to allow BT only -- it doesn't do WiFi -- or is that also because of the HTC phone)?
Is there any way to tether the Iconia to this phone without rooting the tablet?

I can't find Tethering Manager in Titanium Backup... Is it under another name? I only ask because I have found a Wi-Fi sharing manager but don't know if it's the same thing or not. Is it?

It's not called Tethering Manager. It's called Wi-Fi sharing and Wi-Fi sharing manager. Freeze them both and you should be able to tether like you used to.
Good Luck..

Sorry. I assumed that the question was about wireless tethering, when the OP didn't state that.
Tethering is the ability to connect your phone to your computer via a USB port and share the phone's internet connection with your computer. I assume Tethering manager is the T-Mobile app that manages that connection, although I'm running Juggernaut 5.0 and there is no Tethering manager on my phone. I notice if I connect my USB cable to my phone, the USB tethering option is available in Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot.
Wi-Fi sharing, (and manager), provides the same functionality, but instead of connecting the phone to your computer via the USB port, you connect via Wi-Fi, (turning the phone into what T-Mobile calls a portable "Hotspot"). This is often times called wifi tethering, which is why I answered incorrectly. The sharing part is because you can connect up to 8 computers through the phone at the same time.
Wi-Fi sharing doesn't have anything to do with sharing files.
To the OP, if you are trying to do USB tethering, and like me, you don't have the Tethering manager app installed, just connect the USB cable between your phone and computer, and then go into Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot. and see if you can enable the USB tethering option. If so, then you should be able to USB tether without issue. If you've already done this, and it won't work, then you may want to consider installing a ROM which provides this functionality.
You shouldn't freeze, (or need to freeze), Wi-Fi sharing, and Wi-Fi sharing manager, (unless you want to do wireless tethering with an app like this one).
Good Luck..
Barnacle WIFI Tether has always been my trusty go-to. Just install and go with no freezing or unfreezing needed, and it's full of features and options for your tether network.

I'm a quick learner, teach me something.
Wireless and USB tethers
For Wifi Tether [using your phone as a WiFi router to the internet: Barnacle WiFi is the best IMHO [free but phone MUST be rooted].
For USB tether: ClockworkMod Tether: Free AND DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT though you will need to download an exe and install to your computer [install Cloclworkmod Tehter open app and click ? icon and tap Download Tether For PC this will download exe to your SD connect to computer via USB cable and enable USB Drive copy file to computer, run it allow it to install and then after it is running on your computer disconnect your phone, reconnect open clockwork tether and hit the BIG icon above the USB Tether is not running text and you should see it picked up on the computer side.
If you attempt to use any form of WiFi tether app included by Tmo there is a fee for that and oh if you call tech support and try to ask about tethering they will tell you it is not allowed and they dont support it. Really, they dont want you doing for free what they can charge for, and there have been some cases of folks getting called by Tmo and asked to stop [I never have had that happen, but I don't try to use my phone as my only internet connection either so it most likely depends on how you use the tether and all.
Also, keep in mind sometimes you can install an app on your phone that kinda goes nuts and uses tons of data for no reason [could be coding issue, the way you use or set it up, etc] be sure to check to be sure it is not an app abusing your phone's connection and causing all that data usage if Tmo ever call is what I fall back on. You know how stupid us users are ;-)

sorry but wifi sharing has nothing to do with wifi tethering... I actually remove it. Tethering manager is what prevents you from using wifi tethering freely. This has been discovered like the first month the phone was released... That is why roms do not include it..
You can try it for yourself.

[Q] Tethering While Connected to Wifi

Hey all, I ran into this problem earlier today while in class and was wondering if anybody has a good fix. The wifi signal in some of the rooms in some buildings here at school is relatively weak, so much so that my wireless card on my laptop has difficulty picking it up, but my phone can connect.
On my old iPhone, I used to be able to create a hotspot using Pdanet while connected to wifi, so I was not using any of my data. Do any android apps provide this or similar functionality?
Quick answer is no. I wanna say back in the day I did it with a root app.
You could use USB or Bluetooth to share the Wi-Fi internet access to your laptop

Happen to remember the name of that app? I am coincidentally rooted.
Pdanet does work, however it disables wifi before creating the hotspot so I cannot broadcast new wifi from existing wifi.
