Instructions
1. Make a backup
1.5 Using a file explorer, navigate to root/system/framework and copy "framework.jar" to your external SD card. This is in case the mod doesn't work!
2. Download correct zip
3. Using a file explorer, navigate to root/system/app/ and rename "SecMms.apk" to "SecMms.apk.bak"
4. Reboot into Recovery
5. Flash zip
6. Reboot
7. Enjoy!
FAQ
Q: It doesn't work!/How do I uninstall this?
A: If it doesn't work for you then simply replace your framework.jar (located in root/system/framework) with the one you backed up before flashing this. If you want to uninstall the mod then replace your framework.jar with the backed up version, rename "SecMms.apk.bak" back to "SecMms.apk" and delete "Mms.apk" from "root/system/apps". If for some reason you didn't backup your framwork.jar, you can find it in the same location in your current ROM zip.
Q: The Quick Reply options aren't showing up in my notification area!
A: If this happens simply touch the notification with two fingers and pull down.
Q: I can't send or recieve MMS!
A: If your MMS won't send then long tap on the message, tap edit, and then resend the message. If this is still not working, try adding the Cingular APN. (See screenshots below)

I'd love to have a fully working AOSP messaging app on TouchWiz. I've looked over some threads but haven't found anything that is fully functional. One of them seems to have a fix but it requires flashing a modified framework.jar for the GS3, which I'm fairly certain won't work on our phones.

I have used one on the last 3 ROMs I've used. I started with NOTEorious, then Asylum TJ, now CleanROM. The NOTEorious AOSP MMS cwm fix has worked great on all the ROMs i've used. It's transparent too. Props to cjsspape, or whomever made that file for him. it is not my work, I'm just mentioning the solution to your question.....
The only thing I have an issue with is when I tap a contact icon (within the AOSP MMS app) it says contacts have force closed, other than that it is fully functional.
Here is the link to his thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984546
Remember, just download the MMS FIX and flash the FIX only. That is all I do.
Oh, you have to remove SecMMS.apk manually too....otherwise it will still show the TW MMS, not the AOSP mms.

Everything works great. I like the transparency but I'm not really a fan of the custom icons. Any way to change that?
Does thos fix the low quality mms problem? Where you get that low quality slideshow. Instead of the real picture.

I thought touchwiz did not allow expandable notifications. Why not just go to an AOSP ROM? I suspect that even if someone gets it to work, the experience won't be the same as with AOSP.

That's because you also need the AOSP contacts, which also needs an AOSP dialer, which also needs an AOSP gallery.
Thanks for this though. I will look into it and perhaps make it flashable for those who want it to also remove the secmms.apk automatically.

I use expandable notifications all the time. The only thing I want from AOSP is the messaging app and the features that come with it. I've tried a couple of AOSP ROMs but ultimately I like stock better because of TouchWiz features. I looked up what I wanted and saw progress on other TouchWiz devices so I figured it was possible. Obviously it is possible it just needs a little work. Also, if you're making a flashable zip could you look into changing the theme back to stock AOSP MMS?

thanks! works perfectly! oh one last question tho, in regards to the lockscreen. the quick reply doesn't work very well with security lock screens like the pattern one right? cuz it gets a bit funky with mine when i have locks on.

I can send pictures. Sometimes quick reply is in notification area, sometimes it doesn't show.
On the other hand I found out earlier that I can't receive MMS. When attempting to open a MMS that I receive, messaging force closes... sorry guys. Wasn't aware of that issue...

Text it to yourself. Issue was also confirmed ^ above.
The source threads also discuss this issue, so if you want to send and receive mmms you have to stay stock. If you only care for sms then you can get the aosp mms apk with quick reply.

Sending pictures stalls sometimes. You need to long click the message, click edit, and then send it again. If quick reply doesn't just up just use two finger and pull down on the message. It'll pull up the quick reply options. I've managed to get the default AOSP MMS as well. I flashed the fix mentioned in the second post and then booted up my phone, pushed the MMS.apk from the JellyBam ROM to system, renamed the default MMS app (Secmms.apk) to "SecMms.apk" and then rebooted. Everything works minus the small MMS issue.

I was able to confirm this works.
1. Reboot to recovery
2. Flashed the noteorious mms fix (which came with the transparent mms app and Blue icons)
If you like it, go to 3 otherwise go to next step.
2a. Extracted mms.apk from jellybam rom and moved it into system/app
3. Rebooted.
The mmsms get stuck the first time around. Strange issue, since if you edit and resend, it works.
Confirmed Quick Reply works and mmsms shows preview in notification.
Thanks!

does this work on any 4.1.2 ROM that has been released lately. I'm on the rooted stock AT&T deodexed 4.1.2 ROM. Also, does this enable group texting as well?

One more reason to GO!!!! Go Contacts has Go Dialer included with works with any reasonable resolution (182-240) that LCD Density has on the Samsung Epic. Just replace the icon on your launcher with the Go Launcher Dialer and if you want Go Contacts and you are good to go. Go those of you who have balls of steel you can try a lower resolution but I won't I don't want to mess my phone up and have FC issues. I am happy I tried go launcher I am even trying go SMS and I have discovered it is way better than the stock SMS. But I will keep the stock SMS for MMS purposes. Since I heard that you need the stock SMS to send MMS messages. Plus I have a modified stock SMS that sends picture that are up to 5MB in size. I am happy I found the solution to my problem without have to create a theme which would take hours to do!!!
You'll need to contact the Creator, its apparent it doesn't fully support your choice of ROM
some info here -> Epic
Custom theme for smaller screen density.

I click on the link and read all through the post another person goto it to work for their epic too. I have no problem getting it to work on my Samsung Epic. It works great for me. It works great just the dialer look funny. Can somebody create a flash-able dialer for this screen density or even a theme for this screen density.

That is cool I remember the touch pro 2 had a dialer file that you could alter and resize for different Rom builds. I was just wonder if you could do the same thing with android?
That would relate to the dialer.apk probably. Less then the whole "android os" itself

Some people can change the look of the dialer, color,
appearance, etc. So it is possible it is just having the know how and most importantly the time to do it.
I asked a similar question a while ago and got zero answers.
I'm suprised more people are not into changing the dpi of their screen. Default is annoyingly large.
I run at 182, the smallest it will run without fc's from contacts.apk

Yeah I hated that. 180 worked fine on 2.1. There needs to be a way to edit the Dialer.apk so the graphics show up normally. The same thing for the camera app.
How can we get people to like LCD Density.

If we can get enough people using LCD Density. Maybe somebody will make a theme for it that is between 182 and 186. If one of the themer can fall in love with is program we might have a chance.
I'm definitely looking for an answer to this also. Would be awesome for one of our devs to implement. Maybe if we shoot a pm to one of them.

Try Go Contacts with has a Go Dialer included it is free.
I found the solution to my problem. The program I use is called Go Contacts which has go dialer bundled with. Download on free application and get the second for free. You can't beat that deal!!!! I am also using go SMS. I wanted to go all GO but I like the launcher on Launcher Pro Plus better than Go Launcher EX. But that can change if the widget were more like HTC and if it had a scrollable dock.
I just recently switched to Go SMS from Handscent. Mainly because it has been taken off the market. Anyways, Go SMS is fine but I have one minor gripe. When receiving a picture and opening it, it opens in its own stupid viewing program. I hate it cause it downsizes the picture super small forcing you to hit the zoom button 5 times to see it. So far I just hit the save button then open Quikpic and view it there, but is there a way to make it just use Quikpic straight from the message like all other message apps do?
Settings/MMS settings/preserve image resolution. That might solve your image size issues. Don't know how to get it to open in another app for viewing. Suppose you could long press the image.
yeah that didnt help. I see handscent is back on the market maybe i will switch back.
I use go on my EVO and I dont notice any decrease in res I long press message then save attachment to sd

I have GOSMS and running ACS ICS 5.5. Changed my LED to blue and it lights up and flashes just fine. I'm sure it's in the settings but when I get a MMS, I recieve notification from GO SMS and the Stock Messenging app. I have GO SMS set up to turn off all other notifications but MMS still comes through on both.
Maybe im mistaken, but i thought in stock JB MMS, atleast in the AOKP ICS you could convert sms to mms somehow. Am i missing the function in JB mms app?

Changelog:
7-16-13
It's kinda important I just noticed and fixed an issue with the other kernels, I still can't guarantee there performance but I've done all I can.

6-14-13
1. Eliminated more of the wifi calling popups and stuff. Including eliminating a couple of apps and modifying the IPservice.apk. This should fix some issues with unexpected wakelocks form IPservice.
2. Changed the AOSP and Blue theme Clear Notification and Settings button to blue, but Changed the Clock header to white. A separate add-on is available to change the clock back to blue. I just found it to be Ugly and the contrast just wasn't there... too much blue.
3. Fixed a small, error in the install script when theming the note 2 keyboard.
4. Added 5 more battery icons to the OTF battery mod. Just because

FAQ/Issues
KNOWN ISSUES:
Aroma might hang during installation. Hold power button until it reboots. It will reboot right back into recovery so don't worry.
Aroma's color might be off sometimes.
The Play/Pause function of "Music controls" does not currently work once the phone goes into deep sleep. Which is about 3 seconds. Need someone skilled with kernel development to give us a hand on this one.
AOSP Mms has a bug that when selecting your own contact in a message thread, it will force close the contacts app
A WiFi calling popup will show when setting up your WiFi for the first time.
Battery Notifications might be a little screwey the first charge. Might have to toggle the setting once you actually have a full charge and the notification, then unplug. If turned off the Notifications should be gone from now on.
Be careful using the volume up key when taking pictures with Best photo. It might cause issues. The on screen button works fine, and the volume key works fine in all other modes.
Tell us if you notice anything else.

GPS:
GPS not locking: Unfortunately This is going to happen to some when coming from AOSP based ROMs and other carrier ports.
A couple common fixes include...
=====================================================================================================================================================================
1. Easiest and most reliable way. Try this first!
Enter the Samsung service mode by typing this code into the dial pad *#197328640#
Then go to Mainmenu>UMTS>Common>NV REBUILD>NV REBUILD> (Important: don't exit the menu yet!)
Wait 30+ sec
Long press power button and select "Restart / Reboot"
Now check your GPS from any software that may use GPS like "Maps" or "GPS Status"...
All credit to harshaedvern for this easy fix
=====================================================================================================================================================================
2. Returning to the stock ROM via ODIN, acquire a GPS lock then reboot into Recovery.. Wipe and Flash new ROM.I recommend trying Chainfire's MOBILE ODIN first before the desktop version, it's really easy to use and it's free to XDA users HERE.
You can flash an ODIN package right from your phone and still retain your custom recovery, simply exclude it from the list of partitions to flash.
It will also inject ROOT if the ODIN package does not already have it... makes things really simple.=====================================================================================================================================================================
3. Restoring a nandroid of a TouchWiz ROM with a known working GPS status, make sure all location services are enables and can obtain a GPS lock. (go to additional steps now if needed) Reboot, Wipe and Flash New ROM...Additional steps if required before flashing new ROM:
Backup your internal storage and take out your sd-card now... just in case stuff gets deleted. Do a Factory Reset form within the restored TW nandroid. Reboot... Skip all the setup stuff... acquire a GPS lock again... Reboot into recovery Wipe and Flash the new ROM.=====================================================================================================================================================================
4. Flash back to the AOSP ROM you were just on. Obtain a GPS lock, then reinstall ROM again and see if GPS works
=====================================================================================================================================================================
5. Repeat until one of the options ends up working... Not much else to tell you to try. Good luck!
=====================================================================================================================================================================
GPS and Location Services: If you have Google Maps installed and Google Now, you will notice Maps uses your location services a lot during the day. Apparently Google thinks we need our location tracked 24/7. Turning GPS on only when needed will help eliminate the wakelocks created by maps. Going a step further you may also want to disable the "Use Network Location", This will also stop other apps form getting your location... Most apps will let you enter your location manually so it's not really a big deal turning it off, especially when your talking about increasing your battery life.
Thanks guys! Can't wait to try this rom!!!!

Just (clean) flashed this on my Canadian i747 -- so far, so good!
Loving the customization options (fonts especially)...
Been on stock VLDLK4 since I've had my device...
Overall, this ROM is very nicely done -- and is definitely a keeper.
oh man, this is awesome:
** "Please do not post any comments about battery life" --> yes, rule #1: there are no comments about battery life. use the ROM, let your device DIE (1% battery ^_^), charge it, let it die (again) and ....again....then you can get a true idea of battery life.

Fast "FREE" File hosting is hard to find for these large ROMs. Android File Host is probably the fastest, next to the Torrent. and the Torrent will be really fast if everyone would seed for a coulple of days.

I know, I see you all over these forums. I think you must have flashed everything by now. lol So I'm interested in what you think. Now we keep it minimalistic. It has lots of options but doesn't necessarily feel like a custom ROM if you know what I mean.

Needs testing but I resigned the AccessT-Mobile app so it shouldn't be recognized by the market. So since this version should be safe form the update you can choose to use it or uninstall it.
Fixed 1% battery mod... seems Samsung used 2 sets of xml to control the the battery icons.
Known issues
Screen off torch light is buggy. It will work fine within 3 seconds of the screen being turned off. If it works perfect for you no matter when you turned the screen off then it is creating the wakelock and you may experience some extra battery draw. *A reboot will get rid of the wakelock*
Battery MOD my be a little funky till you mess with the settings. *It might also be slow to open, as we add more icons it will get slower*
Tell us if you notice anything else.

Flashed this earlier today and it's been running pretty smoothly :good: Wifi calling would be awesome. I get terrible reception at work. Is there any way we can manually add it back? I'd be willing to give it a shot
Flashed last night, and it's running pretty smoothly.
One thing though is I cannot get pattern lock to start.
Edit: I did get it going with a reboot.

Anyone can do whatever they like with this ROM. I just figured that with the features loserskater and I implemented, thought you enjoy it.
With that said it shouldn't be much of an issue for a dev here to pretty much copy the features we added. Getting the WiFi calling back will involve putting the toggle back in the SecSettings.apk use the original IPServices.apk this one is hacked. Replace the missing ims-service.apk and ip-provider.apk Replace the phone.apk . Replacing the phone.apk will get rid of call recording. You won't be able to get call recording back using the T-Mobile phone.apk. There might have been more WiFi calling stuff removed in the android.policy.jar as well but I don't remember.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I've never understood the WiFi calling issue. I personally use Talkatone, and haven't missed a beat.
As for the features I look for to make or break a rom for me, this rom is tight. Phone, camera/pictures and music are all working great so far. I'm gonna be trying some different kernels later to see if I can tweak the battery life (it's all right now, but I'm always looking for improvements), and maybe another theme, though the dark green one I chose in Aroma is nice itself.
All in all, so far this rom has gotten off to a strong start. Nice job, and two thumbs up.

Is the call recording feature mic-based or is it true intercepted recording? I thought the MSM89xx series couldn't do intercepted recording (and mic recordings always came out horrible) so if you have true recording working, I'm jumping on this ROM just for that feature let alone all the other nice features it has!

The call record uses the same method that worked in ICS by wanam. And the recordings are saved in the sdcard/sounds in .amr format.

Wait. There's a call recorder in here? I've looked in the app drawer and don't see one.

Sounds like call interception. Kick ass, downloading now!

It's one of the AROMA options. It's in the phone.apk. When you make a call there will be a record button instead of add call.

Mind you it's still not a high quality recording.

AMR never is but its better than a microphone recording. I have missed being able to record calls on my Captivate and Inspire... It really comes in handy when dealing with customer service (especially wireless and cable companies).
EDIT: Wait, I thought the wanam hack was for Exynos and didn't work for Snapdragon?

Crap... just noticed this doesn't have the 5x6 TW launcher. Means I'll have to set up my icons all over again lol.
I'm having a small issue with the patter lock. At first, it wouldn't take until I did a reboot. But now, plugging in the headphones deactivates it. I can reactivate it by doing another reboot, but it deactivates when I plug the headphones in again. Don't know if this an across the board issue.

Ok, I'll look into that. I know that plugging in the headphones unlocks the device with just the swipe lock, this was a stock feature. Maybe the quick unlock with pin or password broke something.
Edit: I can not replicate the error with any combination, pin, pattern, password, tw lock screen, AOSP lock screen. When I plug my headphones in takes me to the pattern unlock and does not unlock my phone. All lock screens are working for me as soon as I change them. I'm not sure what would cause that.
