[Q] Need to ask a couple of questions... - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently suffered a HDD failure on my main PC and as a result, I lost all my Arc stuff.
I also recently bought a new micro SD card for my phone and I thought that now would be a good time to 'reformat' my phone too.
I'm currently running CM9 and thought it would be good to change to either CM10, AOKP JB etc.
However, I have some issues.
Firstly, I'm not sure which drivers I'll need to make sure that everything will work properly when I 'reformat' my phone. Are these what I need? - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582554
The second thing is, I no longer have the .ftf file for 4.1.B.0.587 that I can flash via FlashTool to start fresh and the Mediafire links on xda no longer work. So if anybody could re-upload them or point me to where I can find another copy that would be awesome. It's for an LT15i by the way.
I think that's all for now.
Thanks everyone.

Forget the .ftf question, I found a few links here on xda, my bad.

For your driver question the link you posted should have the necessary drivers. You should also install PC Companion and Update Service as those also contain drivers for each phone (correct me if I'm wrong on that)

R800i 4.0.A.2.368 UK on the Verizon R800x

This is a long shot, but this is something I've love to know whether it is possble or not. I have heard a couple people say that they pulled this off.
Obviously, the R800x Xperia Play on Verizon is the stripped down version of the UK version. The R800i has the whole Sony Experience, and I wish to have that on mine. So I thought to myself, couldn't I just flash the R800i 4.0.A.2.368 UK ROM found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1221105
onto my R800x Xperia Play? And before anybody says it, I KNOW that the network won't work, no phone and no sms. Only Wifi would work. That is fine by me. I would be perfectly fine with this just being an Android WiFi gaming device with the whole Sony Experience that the R800x lacks.
I've tried flashing this R800i ROM with FlashTool, and it keeps failing. Which sort of surprises me, because a couple of others in the thread in the link I posted above claim that it worked for them. (I can't post there. Dev section. Not enough posts yet)
Is is just a fantasy that will never come true? Or am I simply doing something wrong? If I was not very clear about something, please let me know, and I will edit this post with corrections. Thank you for your kind advice or suggestions.

i think its been confirmed that itll brick it someone tried to see if they could enable the sim card slot flashing a generic rom to the r800x yes the r800x has a sim card slot has a plastic thing covering it right behind/on top of the sd card

Well I'm not trying to enable the sim card slot. I just want the ROM on there so I can replace the horrible VCast with the Playstation Store, give me the Sony Ericsson widgets, basically all of the stuff that the R800i gets to have.
And since this phone is just my backup (WiFi only) device anyway, no network access does not concern me at all.

Actually, yes, this! I may not want the whole she-bang, but if I can find a way to replace the framework that wants to pull everything from the VZWapps store *shudder* then I would be a tad happier. Just replacing the "Play" app doesn't do it. So where is the framework that tells it where to go?
Second, I know there are portions of the SE Experience framework still in the R800x, as some of the widgets, when installed, still work. Also, there is something blocking the normal facebook app from installing an account hook like on other stock phones, even though the rest of the r800x is "stock". I think we can pretty much all see that the R800x was not "Stock" but rather just stripped. Almost all the hooks are still there, plus some that are VZW specific.
UPDATE:
I have gone ahead and tried this, done some testing. So far, I'm making progress!
I have gotten the European R800i ROM on my R800x Xperia Play.
It boots up just fine (new boot animation).
However, I am stuck at one spot. I cannot do anything except bring down the notification bar, view the Xperia Play games when I slide out the gamepad (VCast is gone!), and change USB options when plugged into the computer.
Here are the steps that I have taken:
-Full stock restore with FlashTool
-Flashed doomlords boot.img with the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
-Flashed frasertag's system.img with the command "fastboot flash system system.img"
-Flashed the system.sin from the R800i Firmware (I extracted it) with the command "fastboot flash system system.sin"
-Disconnected USB then turned the phone on. It boots just fine.
Now the reason that nothing actually functions at this point is because I only flashed the system.sin from the R800i firmware (this is just a theory!). Trying to flash the whole ROM in FlashTool will result in an error and fail. I have read in another post that a trick to bring full functionality (besides the network) is to create a Nandroid backup before flashing all of this, delete the system.img from the backup, then restore the Nandroid backup after all of the flashing is done. The restoration part has got me stumped so far..
I will keep trying, and will ask the guy who I got this idea from how he got past the restoring backup stage (where I'm stuck).
I am determined to make this work! haha

During my experimentations, I bricked my Xperia Play a couple times. Luckily it must have been a "soft brick" or something, because I was able to restore it by doing a full restore to factory stock. Nothing else would register in the bricked state.
I do not have a SIM card for this phone at the moment. The only SIM card I have on me is the 4G card for the Droid Charge.
I tried restoring the Nandroid backups without including the system.img in the restore, and it still wouldn't fix the problem.
Here are a few theories I have on why it didn't work, and what might work:
-The Nandroid backup was from factory stock, and NOT rooted.
-The inability to do anything on the homescreen may be due to the lack of a launcher.
So what I'm going to try next is:
-Do a Nandroid backup while in a rooted state, and all of the Verizon related software removed. Try restoring that.
-Download the system dump from the R800i, and install the Launcher APK via ADB Shell.
Not giving up.
I have succeeded in putting the Sony Ericsson Experience from R800i onto the Verizon R800x.
I'll post pictures a little later.

I am sorry for "abandoning" this thread, but I got incredibly busy with school. Here is what's going on. I got good news, and bad news.
Bad news, I got the ROM to flash onto the R800x, but encountered problems to the point where it's not even worth posting anything for.
Good news, so instead, I took a good chunk of goodies from the R800i dump, and put it on the R800x. A good number of the stuff works, but some doesn't. All these apps/widgets come straight from the R800i.
I am not taking the credit for any of these finds. I am just sharing things that I have found after searching the internet high and low.
First is the SE launcher. This will make your phone look and act a lot like the R800i. This includes the SE app drawer, the folders, the dock and the "jiggly" movements. Everything works except for the themes. Here is a download link:
http://www.mediafire.com/?zuq8hsexodjk3bx
Next is the Playstation Pocket/Suite app. This is the official Playstation app from SE. On the R800x, the widgets work perfectly, the app works fine, and the game launcher looks beautiful. The only problem is that when going to the section to buy more games, it doesn't show any games available for USA. But that's what PSXperia is for. If you aren't familiar with PSXperia, you must check it out.
Here is the link for Playstation Pocket:
http://www.mediafire.com/?mmhduygvlmsjdim
Here is the Media Shortcut widget. This just lets you select music, wallpapers or videos all in one widget. This of course comes from the R800i.
http://www.mediafire.com/?w41bp8wr7d81rb8
Here is the Photo gallery widget. I really like this one. It revolves in a circular motion with your fingers. Works fine in portrait mode, but does not work in landscape for me.
http://www.mediafire.com/?1yuvjhf2f7m1b4l
[ROOT REQUIRED:] And lastly for now, here is the Sony Xperia Play game launcher WITHOUT the VCast. You must remove the Xperia Play game launcher, and VCast. You can remove these using Titanium Backup. Then install this one. This removed VCast for me, and instead gave an icon in the corner that takes you to the Xperia Play optimized games from the Android Market.
http://www.mediafire.com/?5kmog06w4s3qn3i
UPDATE: jgregoryj1 has posted a better and easier method to remove VCast. See his post below (it's #18). It's way simpler, but know that root is still required.
I cannot seem to get the SE R800i music widget to work without crashing. But of course, the R800x stock one and others work like normal, so oh well...
Again, I am not taking any credit for these finds. I just tried these things for myself, and I am now sharing them with any who are interested in making their Verizon R800x's look and feel like the way the Xperia Play was MEANT to look.
In closing, I just want to reiterate, I am very sorry about not accomplishing the task of getting the ROM to work 100% (it was still unusable). But for anybody who wants the R800i look, these should tide you over.
Thank you guys for your understanding, and thanks to everyone for making XDA such a good place.
Travis
I wasn't even aware that verizon held out on these features. Thanks for getting then out there.
These features were indeed stripped from our model(s), and it was very disappointing to learn that they didn't include the Playstation Suite on these. Oh well, for I'm glad I didn't return it now. I love this thing.

Don't use flashtool. Use Fastboot (ie Fastboot flash system system.sin)
Also the radio will still work if you flash chevys nandroid backup after flashing the UK firmware.

I was able to get rid of the vcast market in the xperia play launcher by removing the vcast app from the /system/app folder and rebooting. If thats all you want to get rid of then just do that. The android market will then be in plce of the vcast. Although I have flashed te UK rom and have the full Timescape rom onmy phone for a few weeks now. Its pretty sweet and fast. But kudos for posting the helpful information

Also you need to flash Doomlord's kernel for 3.0.1.A.0.145 found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15805471&postcount=2
Then apply chevy's FTSv05 CDMA Patch v2. You will have a fully functional phone with the exception of multimedia messaging.
None of this works with 4.0.A.2.368 Roms though. I have been working on trying to get the radio functional on the newer Roms.
Or you could pull the kernel from a tft file like I did. dooms kernel had too many problems for me. No wifi, low volume, etc.

[Q] i did try search first but could find the answer..

yes i'm a noob and yes i'm sorry...
bit of info first.
phones been rooted using superoneclick
I unstalled some stock apps see below..
3D Flare
Bruce Lee
Crash Bandicoot
FIFA 10
Star Battalion
Tetris
The Sims 3
And some other apps which first owner installed i'm guessing but none of which came with the phone.
I used root Uninstaller (free ver.)and like a noob never backed up (small SDcard)
but today i found out if i want to update to future SE i will need to install them again.
found a link on another thread but the links seemed broke.
I have just rooted my phone to installed Rooted apps i don't want to mess around with bootloading or custom Rom right now.
ICS looks fine to me and i may want it if i can on a rooted device.
so my noob question is....
I would like to know how to install what i have removed if possible?
here is some phone info

baseband ver 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56

Don't like asking and wearing the 'noob did bad hat'
please don't flame me and sorry if i forgot anything..
i managed superoneclick ok but thats about it..
You could use the forums and search the "Xperia Play Android Development" for a .zip of the stock 4.0.A.2.368 software and open the zip goto>System>Apps and copy the apks to your phone's memory card and install them,
or you can use this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1221105&highlight=stock+2+3+4 and flash the orginal ROM using Flashtool. There are plenty of tutorials about Flashtool on Google and in the forums.
Once you've got the original ROM back, you can do a Titanium Backup and all that jazz to get root back.
Let me actually check to see if I have backups of those apps and I'll post them.
Hope this helps.
Edit: I don't have backups. But also just wanted to add that you can always install the latest SE update yourself once it comes out. Don't worry about not having those apps. You can flash it with Flashtool. Someone will post about it in "Xperia Play Android Development" once the official Android 4.0 is released and they will have instructions. Just search up how to flash custom roms and how to use flashtool until then.

thanks for reply but all the .zipFiles I found are now broke or removed.
wanted to stay away from Flashtools always have problem's with CMD stuff.
I guess by the time ICS comes out i might know a bit more.
so in short if i can find the apks for the stock apps i can install them using
Flashtool ?
is there no other way with just a rooted device ?
Just checked a backup of my Sd and couldn't see DIR System>Apps ? so is this on the phones memory ?
You can use a root explorer to access the system folder on your phone, any apk can be installed on your phone by enabling the unknown sources option, you don't need flashtool to do it.

No, you flash your entire system with Flashtool. I don't think there's a way to extract the apks from a .ftf file. If you had the zips yea u could just extract the apks and send them to ur phone and install or install them via flashtool or adb/fastboot.
Another option is to search Google for the apks for each one of the games you uninstalled. You could very likely find them that way.
Yes, it's on phone memory. If you have a root explorer app u can get to system. System directory is not on Sd. It's at /system. (One bak from Sdcard is the default directory where the System folder can be found.
Can't u jst find an exact firmware of ur phne n flash it via flashtool??
That'd be easier i thnk

Ok small update and question.
Thanks to justinchi I did google search and found a Apk for Bruce Lee game, installed it with root explorer form a new fold on sd root.
But I was wondering how I can move it to playstationpocket app ?
Does it have to be in the pocket like before for an update in the future ? Hope thats clear...

Well unfortunately, the ICS update for the PLAY has been cancelled for now:
http://blogs.sonymobile.com/product...ream-sandwich-rollout-for-xperia-smartphones/
But I don't think the Bruce Lee was in the Playstation Pocket App. It was in the Xperia Play launcher. If it isn't showing up there, try to use titanium backup to convert it to a system app and then reboot your phone. It's not sure to work, but I hope it does.
See my post on writing letter to Sony about the cancelled update:

Awesome, glad it worked. Yea, the Vita is a little disappointing right now, but there are a lot of great titles coming for it. I think it still has hope! Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice (though it's very eery), LittleBigPlanet, and others. They can't abandon their only real mobile gaming device.

Bro,I am new to xda.I've got one of this lt15i.Its on stock 4.0.4/4.1.B.0.587 and unlock bootloader says yes.
Does everyone here need to download Android SDK prior to flashing or rooting their devices? And when one does download the android SDK and run it on pcx64 it prompts to download java as well. Now I've got to files. So I double click on SDK and keeps prompting to download java. How do we overcome this as I believe it a must have application to connect both pc and device.I am stuck with these two downloads not knowing what to do next.
If there was a way kindly open a thread for newcomers to go into a post on how to get started on pc and then their device.

Hello, before I begin, I just want to thank you for your post is actually what finally gave me the final push to get an account here at xda. I know how it feels when you can't get a quick reply, or even worse, when you end up resorting to trial and error and brick your phone. So, I decided to create a new account to help people stuck in similar situations as well as to relieve the more experienced members of some of their load. Answering the same old questions can get pretty boring haha.
To answer your questions:
1) No, you will not require SDK if you're only seeking to root or flash your phone. Though, I have read some guides where they recommend you do so because you can also get the required usb driver files from there, though this is also not necessary.
2) I'm not too sure about your problem with Java, however, you do need to get it fixed because it is required for certain applications like flashtools. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. I used to have similar problem with Java, albeit for other programs. Perhaps one of the more experienced members around would be of more help if the problem persists.
To end off, I'd just like to express that I do agree with your final sentiments. I also started on my android journey alone, and it was a bit of a hassle figuring stuff out, especially after I unlocked my bootloader and couldn't rely on SEUS to save my ass. Well, feel free to ask if you have any questions. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to explain some details in an easier-to-understand manner.

[Q] Need the 2.3.4 Gingerbread Verizon update

So I just got an Xperia Play that I won from a giveaway. Nice little phone. I already have a Galaxy S3, so I have no reason to use the Xperia Play as my phone. It does, however, make a nice wi-fi only game playing machine and media player.
It is on 2.3.2 still, which I assume is what the phone launched with. I just read that there was an update that brought it to 2.3.4, so I tried updating, but it won't check for updates without a cellular connection (have no idea why; seems kind of stupid). Is there any way to still get this update? Can I download it from somewhere online and put it on the microSD card on the phone or something?
Thanks in advance.

And to giv u start go on to the x-play development thread, stickies & find a guide on "how-to" flash a f/w. There's also a guide at the general section too. So go get started.

Okay, I didn't know it was redundant, since I hadn't seen any other threads for it, and I was wondering if somebody had the firmware file and if I could just put it on the microSD card and install it. If I had known that you can't do that, the thread would not have been posted.

[Q]Want to ROOT & REMOVE ICS upgrade & go BACK to Gingerbread..???.

Hi Everyone!
I have an Xperia Arc that I got through Rogers. It had been running Gingerbread 2.3.4 and the ICS update didn't arrive until a year after I got my phone. I read that it wasn't really recommended to do the ICS upgrade even though it had become available (according to Sony). I had been waiting for SO long to check it out that I took my chances on the 50/50 good bad reviews on it and went ahead with the ICS update when Sony/Rogers released it.
BIG MISTAKE.
At first I didn't think it was that bad - but now after having it for a few months- I HATE IT. My phone runs like S***. It's slow laggy.
I had been wanting to root my phone for a long time (I want to get rid of all the bloatware software and be able to use firewalls and tweak CPU speed).
I was all ready to root and use a custom ICS ROM - but I thought about it and I would rather have GIngerbread back on my phone. My phone was awesome when it had Gingerbread and all I ever want to do now is smash my phone - it just can't run ICS properly.
So here is what I want to do:
1. Root phone - I have already downloaded FLASHTOOL, and the DOOMLORD V4 Rooting tool.
2. Flash phone and get RID OF ICS
3. Install a custom ROM
I just need a bit of help.
I need clarification regarding the ADB Drivers.... I have read in numerous places that by just having the up to date Sony PC Companion that you will have the ADB Drivers needed - and I already have the most up to date Sony PC Companion.
I also need some tips regarding ROMS and KERNELS. I understand they are different and they have to be compatible but when I was originally getting all my files for ICS all I found was a kind of 'all in one' - maybe I was confused - and this is why I need some clarification. Do I need to have a separate ROM and KERNEL otherwise then what do I do?
THANKS!!!! rEBECCA

Click the first link in my sig, read it, then come back and ask about anything you're still unsure about.

Thank you for your quick reply. I had actually already read it. I DID read it again though... I picked up a bit more knowledge from the 2nd read but it still didn't clear up a few things.
I'm still not clear on the ADB drivers, I saw all the tutorials about ADB for noobs etc but I'm reading on a LOT of places that just having Sony PC Companion installed and up to date will have the ADB drivers...
I should also let everyone one know that my phone is a ROGERS phone, so my bootloader is LOCKED. I have figured out that there are some ROMS that will work on a LOCKED (carrier (rogers) bootloader.
I currently have Android 4.0.4 (I did the update when it came avail to me and I regret it - i really need gingerbread back) I would also like a rom that doesn't have all the Rogers 'bloatware".
All I want to do is undo the stupid ICS update I did and get rid of that HORRID Rogers bloatware!
Through all my reading over the last while I've learned of 'omnius' - I guess it will unlock my bootloader, root, flash and do lots for my phone. Anyone else recommend this for my situation?
Flash a stock GB ftf and go from there, which will debrand your Phone in the process.
