Help! Think I bought a stolen/locked kindle fire - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bought it off craigslist without really thinking to test it. Idiot, but it was cheap, it won't let me login with my prime account or anything so I basically can't use it.
I wanted to root it anyway, is there a way to root these or are the just useless?

Galaxy Nexus Came rooted???

Hey,
I bought a Galaxy Nexus here in Vietnam and just realized that it is running a custom rom and has been rooted. The phone was new (no scratches and had the original plastic covering the screen)... My friends here tell me that iPhones are often sold jailbroken so I was wondering if this is normal here??? English is a major challenge so I'm not sure if I will be able to get more information from them...
Everything seems to be working totally fine... just curious.
Post a screen shot of settings/about phone. Do you have superuser apk installed?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Here you go...
Superuser is installed.
Not sure why the picture didn't work... here is a link.
In Vietnam beware of the originality of the phone. It's easy to reseal the phone/box/accessoires,etc.
Definitely they sold you an used item. Go back to the store to get a refund or exchange for real new one.
Hope it helps.

I agree, the OP got sold a used phone.
yeah, i was probably used, or possibly a refurbished phone.
i head of people getting a Certified like new replacement (refurbished) HTC thunderbolt that was rooted with a sense 3.5 ROM on it.
but the phone is def. not a NEW phone from samsung. also, being rooted, who knows what kind of tracking stuff could be on that phone. i would take it back and do the rooting process yourself just to make sure.

Eh, you could always just reflash the factory image instead. That'll pretty well get rid of anything that could be installed on the phone.
Or use fastboot -w to wipe it all and then reflash whatever you want to be on it.
Assuming all the hardware works, of course.

I suppose the OP is in Hanoi Vietnam.
Do you like the food ?
either you paid a very good price and the phone works perfectly, in this case just flash a full official image. You can find them on code.Google.com
Either you paid the full price for a new one or it doesn't work or look fine, in that case I would go back to the shop and ask for a real new one or a refund

Sorry I don't want to bother the OP's life. It' that because I'm from Hanoi too and I miss My hometown.
Thanks guys.... I'm going to head down there today and find out what they say. I'm hoping that they happened to get the extended battery in too!

Ahh... Well they are saying that there is no way it came rooted and I'm SOL. And this is Vietnam so there is really nothing I can do about it.... Bah. Its working well so I have no complaints really.
Thanks everyone for the input on this.

If the hardware is working fine then you can just unroot and flash back to stock and you'll be all good.

What is the store's name ? street ?
or, better yet. leave it rooted and install Adfree, Titanium Backup, RM, CWM, WiFi tether etc.... Unlock the bootloader right away while you're at it (since it'll do a wipe/reset) and then go flash some roms!

Blacklisted Kindle HD, Android?

Hey all, I purchased two blacklisted Kindle Fire HD's (7" model) from a guy on eBay. They're blacklisted by Amazon, but in brand new condition.
Anyways, they work normal, I can access the web via Wi-Fi, etc. BUT can't log-in to any Amazon account to download apps.
So can I root it, and install CM10 or something? And if so, that will make them work perfect, right? Like if I add GAPPS, then I can just download any Google Play apps like normal?

Absolutely, amazon blacklist does not apply to aosp... or cm10.1 as it may be.
To answer your other question, it would be the same whether you installed cm10.1 or gapps
(stock rom doesn't really like some of the gapps tho.)

D'oh! My bad, yes I meant I'll definitely use a custom ROM from this site, with GAPPS on it.
So I did pretty good then? Ps, I paid $100 each! Both are perfect condition, just blacklisted.

[Q] Has anyone deregistered fire tv?

Hi,
I bought fire tv from a Chinese seller. however he can't give me the pin. now fire tv displays seller's account and I can't deregister and I can't buy amazon instant video. even I can't reset to factory. when I did them, It always quest a existing pin. I am fed up.
1. if you bought your fire tv from amazon directly, how to deregister it? does it need a existing pin?
2. if you bought the fire tv from a seller, how to deregister it? does it need a existing pin?
thanks

I got mine from Best Buy (via Ebay actually) and it wasn't registered to anyone. And when I set it up, I don't even recall an option to use a PIN for security. Anyone can get on my machine and a do a factory reset if they wanted.
www.amazon.com/pin
you can reset pins, deregister, etc. Only problem is, you have to log in to do it. And if it's not your account, I don't see how you can log into it. Unless someone has a better idea, I'd call Amazon and see if they will reset it for ya. Might get stuck with unrootable firmware, but at least you'd gain your Amazon functionality again.
Of course, there is the brute force method. Will take time, but will eventually work.

Hi,
thanks for giving some hint. Now, I can't get any help from amazon, they said they don't sell it outside of USA. It's illegal to use it in China. and I can't get support from my seller, he said I want to get the PIN and steal his money. before I can use it to play netflix and hulu. after It upgraded to 54.1, I can't setup new netflix again.
So I had to buy my second fire tv from amaon.com directly.
But I want to fix my first fire tv, Can you give me more instructions about "the brute force method" to save its life?
thanks

You can ask the seller to de-register the unit from HIS Amazon account.
This is a good idea. what a pity. I have gave him a bag reputation on taobao.com, so

If you have a rootable firmware, install CWM and you can perform factory reset there as well.
WARNING: Read and follow instructions carefully or you may get yourself in a jam.

Anyone still getting rooted units?

I had pretty much given up hope that i'd find anymore rooted units about a month ago until today when I walked into a store and bought 3. Is there still a supply of these rootable fire tv's?

you could get them on ebay. the key is to ask what is the serial. Its hard but a few give the serial and with that you can find out if its rootable. Did you find a few or are you still looking for it. If you did buy three. would you sell any one of them for the community?
Picked up one at staples from 7/14 so I can root it. Tech guy was nice enough to find one for me after bringing out a few from 3/15 so they're still out there. just have to sort through there inventory.

After making this post I have received 3 more rooted units in the mail today from staples. I am beginning to wonder if they stopped making these...
I've actually picked up 7 in the last 3 weeks all at staples....they still keep getting them in.
Most of them are 51.1.0.1 even...I think it'll still be a while you can easily pick these up. I have literally put forth no more than 5% effort in finding these

Actually I've honestly had better luck ordering from staples than going into one. The one time I did the manager actually told me without me asking these were not the rootable ones. Lol mabye it's just where I live.
Must be lol, although I've picked them up all over "congested" areas in Indiana ( I drive a lot for work ).

I like the ability of having a custom rom that is around the corner. The absolute imperative for me is SNES EMU and the Sega Masger System EMU that are charged on google play. and the Quicksupport teamviewer that only works on root for desktop sharing. I can always debug/tweak and help my friends/parents fix their firetv's. Rooted for me is very important.

If you pay for shipping. I can help you. I'm in Los Angeles. Send me a PM. There is a seller on ebay that may have rooted ones brand new but I suggest you message the person directly. I've purchased one for myself and once it arrives I can confirm what version it is. If you need I can stop by at bestbuy to see if they have rootable ones but chances are slim. just trying to help out.

It's a tad expensive, but I suggest buying them from the seller auction_discount. I've bought two of them, and he did a great job rooting them. He sets up XBMC, Stick Mount, Busybox, and other essential apps.

Id rather pay slightly more to get a rootable sealed one vs someone else doing it for me. I just got one from the person in the link above.
The earlier link that I had purchased was a bad one as it seems someone had updated the firmware and repackaged it. The box came opened with plastic.

ah, I agree. I'd rather have one that was rootable as well. I made the mistake of ordering one off of amazon, and it the software was way too new. I returned it and set out for another AFTV. I don't why I didn't pick up a rootable one instead of one that was already rooted.
Yesterday I went into the Navy Exchange on the base I work at, and saw they finally put out AFTV's. I whipped out my phone and checked all of the serial numbers on the ones on the shelf. BOOM! ALL of them were rootable. I picked up three of them right away. I'll probably go back and buy more soon. They all come with 51.1.0.1_user_510055620.

I'm in the same boat right now. It seems like the new updates are providing much of the same experience that rooted boxes originally had. Besides sixaxis and rbox's xposed module, I really don't utilize any of the advantages of a rooted unit over a stock one..
I'd just hate to kill a rooted box. It'd be like shooting a black rhino.

There are fundamental benefits to rooting and rBox has the latest one rooted. Its really simple to keep up with the rooted versions specially when you have the boot menu with recovery installed. For starters the latest version still does not allow ntfs mounts on usb. Then again remote quick support needs root for screen sharing remote as that is imperative if you build boxes for family and friends and if they need any software help.
I always land up helping my parents remotely. I have two sessions connected through teamviewer. one to the firetv and one on the pc and I'm golden. All tweaks updates and fixes work perfectly. except rom/firmware updates.

Refurbished Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote version?

Anyone know what version the referbs are, or is it randomness? Also is the root/mod situation? Is it the same/similar as the fire tablets? I have few of the fire 5th gens 5.1.x that are right at the cutoff and "seni-rootable" and was hoping to find at least hope that I can use the stuff I buy like I actually own it..
https://www.amazon.com/Certified-Re...01ETRH0AM/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
It is random. The FireStick2 has never been rooted. You can side-load apps though.
Thanks, Amazon is such a pain in the azz. The hardware is "ok" (aka it's cheap) but the hoops amazon makes you jump through to use YOUR purchase like YOU actually own is just ridiculous.
Here's an idea for ya amazon, how about you make your products good enough that people actually WANT to use it instead of having to FORCE people to use it..

Thats what I did, and excuse me for attempting to figure out whether amazons monopolistic anti-completive practices were as bad as they are on the fire tablet, turns out they are worse. And having to ask who has ultimate control over what you do with the products you purchase is not a question that you should have to ask..
