[Q] How to fix my messed up contact list? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, before I sold my Note, I exported my contact list to the sd/sim card and also synced to my google account. Don't recall which. I just imported the list to my Note 2. I noticed that some names appear five times under Contacts! In /storage/extSdCard, there are 0001.vdf, ... up to 0005.vcf. I guess these may have something to do with the Contact list. Don't know what they really are. Now my contact list is a mess. What suggestion do you have? Shall I delete the contact list in my phone and sync the original list from my google account? How to do that?

First of all make backup of contact thogh it is messed up. at least you will have copy of contact
go to contact - menu -import/export - export to SD card
then
look to google account on web, if that list is correct then go to setting -app manager - all - contact storage - clear cache and data
sync contact.
If your google web account also messed up
then try checking 001.vcf etc and find date of creating it. and restore from that file if it was created when your list was correct.

Thanks. Usually should I import the .vcf file with the latest number? For example, given that there are 001, 002, .., 005,vcf, I just choose 005.vcf that has the latest date. Are those with smaller number snapshot backups created automatically by the phone earlier on?
After importing the vcf file with the latest date, the phone seems to have the list. However, when I clicked Groups, all the groups that I created on my Galaxy Note do not show up. I only have:
ICE - emergency contacts
Co-workers
Family
Friends
My contacts
Starred in Android
All has (0) on the right.
Is there any way to get back the original Groups list?

I think importing from vcf, breaks groups and saves to ungroup as 'Not assigned'

All People - not showing ALL people

By default, all of my gmail contacts synced to the phone were under the "Friends" category and all showed up under the ALL category.
However, the moment I change the category on a contact, it no longer shows up under ALL. Consequently, if I change the contact to be under no category, the contact disappears altogether.
Is this a bug ? If so, any workaround ?
Hmm, some more info.
Went into gmail, and all of the contacts missing from ALL were no longer in the "My Contacts" group. Now this group cannot be added to manually, but simply adding a contact to another group automatically adds it to this group also.
So the workaround for me was to add all of the missing contacts to a new group (made up) and then immediately remove them again. Sync this to the phone, and they now show up correctly in ALL.
Sounds like a bug with changes on the phone removing the contact from the "My Contacts" group. Anywhere this can be raised as a bug to have fixed ?
I'm having all sorts of issues with contacts. For one the people app refuses to remember the settings to also show facebook contacts. Because for some reason they think some of my contacts are in fact facebook contacts and they don't show up anymore under gmail.
Really seems like a total mess to me : (
Guess it will take some time to figure out what is what with all the linking and things going on.
You are not alone by any means. Both my mate and I are are having similar problems.
You are right that all contacts get download to the phone correctly and show up under "All" as you'd expect but when you add them to another group, i.e. Friends, they do get added to the group but disappear from "All". Remove them from the group and they disappear altogether. However, they are still on the phone as you can find them through the "Search People" app.
I went online to my Google contacts, at contacts.google.com, and found these contacts had been removed from the "My Contacts" folder but appeared instead in "All Contacts". I moved them back to "My Contacts" and they reappeared on my phone.
Surely if you add a contact to a group it should still appear under "All" contacts as well as the group it's been added to?
Workaround??
Been looking into this a bit more....
It seems that you can add contacts to the default groups on the phone but they will be removed from the "All" contacts list [BUG??!! - I'm sure my wife's Hero doesn't do this]. To get them back, and appear in both the group/s and the "All" list, you have to:
1. Login to Google Contacts Manager, www.google.com/contacts.
2. Remove these contacts from My Contacts. They will go to All Contacts.
3. Sync the contacts on the phone.
4. In Google Contacts Manager, move the contacts back to My Contacts.
5. Re-sync the contacts on the phone.
...a real PITA but it just worked for me.
Alternatively, you can control the Groups directly online in the Google Contacts Manager however this only works for new groups or groups that co-exist by default. Some groups on the phone do not directly correspond with those in the Manager and vice versa so if you add a new group to the Manager of a name that already exists on the phone you'll get a duplicate group on the phone.
The kicker is that if you create your own groups on the phone or in the Contacts Manager then everything works without a hitch.

Contacts - google!

I do find the HTC people (contacts) both useful and confusing and have a few questions.
:: I find it a lot easier to edit contacts in my google account on the PC (online) and put contact details like email, phone numbers etc all together under one contact. However, if I do a google contact sync on my phone, it doesn't seem to change anything on the phone when I sync. Is there a way or place to be able to set the sync to change phone details when a change is made online first?
:: It becomes really confusing when you click on a particular contact and then see a list of 6,7 or 8 different contact references for one contact as HTC Sense seems to put all the similar contacts you have together and "linked". Is there a way to try and put all these together and have them as one contact only without manually adding details from one contact reference to another until they all reside under one contact point?
Any other tips greatly appreciated....
If I remember correctly, you can merge contacts in your Google account online. Just tick the duplicates and you should see the option.

yes, but once you've done that, when syncing with the phone it doesn't seem to overide what you have on the phone.
Strange. It does for me.
If I make changes online then sync, I can see my changes.
There is a linked button on the top right in htc people, probably there is the problem.
Found exactly what I've been looking for since I got my desire. I'm absolutely shocked that it's taken this long to find anything and when I have, it's for 1.6 only

Anyone know of another app that does this too but for 2.1 or 2.2?
Just to verify - are your contacts in Desire stored as Google contacts or Phone contacts?

I'm looking for something that does EXACTLY what the above app does. I have a mixture of contacts on phone and google. The google ones are okay. Some contacts when I click on edit, show 5 to 7 different contacts I can edit that are linked. one on google and then another 6 on phone. All I am trying to do is find an app (like the one I posted for 1.6) that allow a merge of all those in to my google contact with all the information.
The same issue obviously existed back in 1.6 days and is still here now

I'm not sure this will help you but when I first got my Desire I saved all my contacts as phone contacts.
Later I realized that they are not synchronized with anything (I don't use Outlook) so I decided to make them all Google contacts.
I exported all of them to sdCard and then imported the file through my Google contacts web application.
It's a long shot but perhaps if you did that then you could merge all duplicates directly in the Google contacts app.
I hope my post isn't too confusing
I'll give that a go... thanks
UPDATE: ok, I have done that and it's added the phone contacts and merged those that need to be merged. However, I now have a huge problem
I now have for every contact that needed merging, 10 or 12 records for the same email and/or phone number. Is there a way in the google contacts web to be able to sort and delete duplicate info within a contact? I can't find it and if not, this is going to be a right pain for 900 contacts
Did u set the people app to view Google contact only?. In the people app, press menu and select view. Make sure the check box is viewing Google contact only.

Merging your contacts created for the same number/email a separate record?
That is strange, it never happened to me.
I just did a test to be sure - I created a duplicate contact with the same mobile number and after merging the final contact had only one number stored. No separate record has been created.
All I can suggest now is to try and delete the contacts that needed merging (from both Google and Phone contacts) and then import your exported Phone contacts. This way you should not have any duplicates and the imported contacts will be automatically stored as Google ones.
The Google Contacts web app should help you with deleting.
Or you can try Contact Analyzer 2 http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/contact-analyzer-2_jmsk.html although I only read the description, I never tried it. But it might prove useful to you.
Have you checked Gmail contacts on your syncing settings?

Cleaning up contacts?

ok - so I get that if I sync my Google contacts to my phone, I sometimes see a name or email address to someone I don't have saved as a contact. i.e. I put in a text and then put in a name and as I started typing the name, Steve, I saw the name of someone I emailed last year about some skis, Sam. I love how Google never forgets and saves names, numbers and emails of people you'll never contact again.
Anyhow, I cleaned up all my contacts and want to export them to my SD so that if I flash a new ROM I don't have to worry about losing my contacts. Some of my contacts don't have gmail/email/facebook, just names and numbers. I've done this in the past and when I import the contacts from my SD card - it ends up doubling or tripling up names in the contact list - all un-joined.
How can I export a clean list to the SD and import it back without creating 200 additional duplicate contacts?
Just clean and deal with your contacts from the Gmail site. Keeps things a lot simpler.

I ran into the same issue myself. what I did was, cleaned up the contacts on my phone, export it to my SD card (it saves as a 0001.vcf file, but you can rename it if you want).
I was going to flash a custom ROM, so I wiped everything. And since you are flashing a new ROM yourself, its usually better to do a full wipe anyway. Once I got my phone up and running, I disabled sync contacts with my google account and made sure my contact list was empty. Then I just imported my saved contacts.
I backed up my SMS messages with SMS backup the same way, available for free in the market.
If you go into contacts you can hit menu while in contacts and set it to
show only contacts with a phone number or such

I had this issue as well when i first came to the Droid world. I had all these weird contacts showing up when I would search a name for a text or what have you. Found out that I had Google set to save contacts I once had and deleted or even any email addresses that I had ever sent to. I went to contacts on gmail and cleaned everything out and set gmail settings to not save the emails anymore. Not sure if this will help you or not but I thought I would share.
There is an app on the market that will scan and fix duplicates, merge contacts, and other things. I forget the name but just search for "contact cleaner" and it should show up.

Question Phone deleating/not reading my contacts

My aliexpress motorola x30 keeps deleating my contacts on the phone "contacts" app. Keep changing the order in the names. Also keeps deleating the "+" in the whats app saved contacts.
Keeps "forgeting" the contacts (in the app) i imported through .csv file to google contacts or the phone's memory. (I did it both ways many times)
please help.
I'm facing this same issue. I already tried these things:
- Deleated all contacts and imported again;
- Downloaded google contacts apps and imported them to a google account;
- Tried others google account;
Maybe it's a rom problem... I can't figure it out! =/

Hi.
My contacts were a mess, so in the .csv format i edit them in microsoft excel, fist. ( the mess was that i export them from many phones so the +52 1 were add and the phone/whatsapp couldnt read them in that format).
So after i edit them, i save them in .csv format from excel and import then in google account linked with the phone... Same tragedy ... (I use google contacts app). So i try to import them to the google contacts app but i couldnt from the phone (google contact app), you only have the option in the gmail app, account manager - people & sharing, contacts - import).
So i open the phone's original contacts app, and then try to import the .csv contacts but it only could read .vcf files. so i imported the contacts to gmail again and exported them in "vcards (ios only)" format which is a .vcf file.
Then i downloaded the new .vcf file and imported them in the phone's original contacts app. Since 8am and until now. No contact have been erease or "forgoten" from the phone. (I imported this file to the "phones" memory and turn off the auto sync with the gmail account).
Hope it works for you too!
I'm experiencing the same issues and I didn't find solution ,
also there is anther problem that some of my contacts their name not show when they call , some of them not all.
Hope some one find how to fix this annoying issues.

S20+ contacts - sync google contacts - big problem

Hello, have S20+ with the latest Android. Using 2x SIM card (home, work). Every contacts are synchronized to my private google account.
Curently I have 500 contacts in Google Contacts. Device shows me 518 contacts.
Sync doesn't work well. Deleted all contacts from google (500 contacts), in device are 43 contacts now. Deleted them and everything from the trash. Imported 500 contacts to google again, mobile shows me 571 contacts now.
Have this problem for some months. Sometimes I found a lot of contacts are deleted (in trash). Google shows me contacts was deleted by device ie at the night if I sleep.
- tried factory reset, didn't help
- yesterday I removed all contacts again and manually add every contact via google contacts. When 30 contacts was in google contacts, device shows me 42 contacts (a lot of duplicates again).
Any fix for that please? It's really uncomfortable. With iOS I didn't have these problems. I'm thinking about returning to iOS again!
example of duplicates in attachment.. If I go to find duplicates in device (by number, name, email), it still shows me there are no duplicates
I cleaned up some contacts and just found this:
google contacts: 488 contacts
s20 (phone app): 503 contacts
s20 (contacts app): 513 contacts
wtf?
SIM will have some carrier contacts and may have some you saved there in the past?. You may have saved some to the native or other dialler contacts before making Google the default account for contacts
Dont think the device has a problem, just think you havent realised how contacts works or realised theres carrier and dialler contacts.
Stop reimporting them and creating more issues.
Stop manually recreating them because Google will sync and create duplicates - youre creating the problem there...
Google Contacts has an option to merge and fix contacts, both in the Contacts app and in the online web page
Sign in - Google Accounts
Please never mention that locked down abomination of a phone OS again, we like freedom here...though it may be jarring to some
you're not right man..
1. don't have any contacts in SIM cards (tried both SIM in another device)
2. made factory reset (without restore backup) few times, still same problem
3. never had this problem with Android 11. It started with Android 12 I think
4. today tried delete all contacts and reimport again 4x. Everytime device showed me wrong number.
4.1 - first import shows me 28 contacts difference
4.2 - second import - 15 contacts difference
4.3 - third import - 41 contacts difference
4.4 - fourth import - 1 difference
5. if device shows me duplicates, there are no duplicates in google contacts
see attachments..
