I'm a big fan of the stock keyboard, mainly due to the number row being present which uses the available real-estate wisely.....however before I got my Note 2 I was a massive fan of Thumb Keyboard and Swype for their customisability.......as far as I can see both thumb keyboard and swype don't support having a dedicated number row, nor does the 4.2 keyboard which we can use so does anyone know of 3rd party keyboards and/or anything on the Play store that has a decent keyboard with dedicated number row available?
Thanks in advance

Thumb keyboard supports a dedicated number row in landscape mode for sure. Just toggle around a bit with the settings and custom layouts. Not sure about the portrait mode though.

Yep times 2. But im using swype. This is my best keyboard and better than slide it.
I use smart keyboard - far better than stock or even the HTC IME mod
Can you tell me in what way a keyboard is better than another?

Well the stock one annoyed me because the word suggestions appear over the top of what your writing, so you can't read what you've just typed.
smart keyboard has a section above the keyboard where the suggestions appear, so they don't get in the way.
also i found i hit the full stop button too often on the stock one as the space bar was too small.
smart keyboard has a free version so try that. but it doesn't have the word correction - that's only in the pro verison
switched to swype a few days ago, don't know if i'll be able to use traditional keyboards again lol
the word prediction is just amazing and much faster than typing on the standard htc sense keyboard
Swype without a doubt.
100% recommended.

Keyboard as portrait mode when in landscape use?
Hi guys! With stock keyboard on Desire, it is pretty good to use it in portrait mode, however, when you try in landscape mode -to take benefits of the larger buttons as well- you must forgo the rest on the page/app or whatever on the screen, because the screen is then full with keyboard and text input box only.
Is there any keyboard which is not covering the whole screen (this may be possible with an input field consisting of one, scrollable line) ??
i find swype incredibly slow, there is no way that one finger sliding to each key is faster than tapping with two thumbs in opinion.
Such choices are relative by definition.
IME, HTC_IME mod keyboard is the best all round followed by Swype in some regards. However, Swype disabling multi-touch in the browser kills its appeal on my end unless I'm using an app where I don't require the zoom feature.
And yep, Swype-ing words is faster, much faster, as odd as that might sound... simply because you don't have to hit the actual keys to bring the whole word up in prediction, and even when you hit a few wrong keys in a word, very surprisingly, Swype 99/100 auto-corrects the word or at least offers the correct word to choose -- far more forgiving than the other traditional keyboards. The detection, prediction and auto-correction are what make the product work. I basically scribble everything in if using it, and do it very fast with little error, less than a traditional on-screen keyboard if trying that much speed anyway (sure, there is an initial learning curve like with anything new. It 'aint a 2 day affair).

This is one major beef of mine on this phone too. It makes the landscape mode quite redundant in many usages.
I don't know of any such app yet.

I can't see why people like Swype over slide it.
I have installed Swype 3 times and each time go back to slide it. Swype although in beta just isn't as good.
For example when you want to do a double letter you need to do a stupid little circle over the letter. WHY? Also its not as accurate. Also I have consistently had a 40% fail rate with words.
Slide it is accurate, I hardly get any mistakes, it knows when you want or need a double letter. I can almost write as quick as if I were typing on a full size keyboard.
The only advantage Swype has is it looks good. I'm amazed people rate it over the far superior slide it.

How To use HTC_IME? how to mods it?
What I'd really like is to be able to use Swype in portrait, and HTC in landscape...
This is much better than all those:

totally agree,i find swype to be awesome for portrait but a bit rubbish for landscape.
so I'm coming from using Swype on Gingerbread and loved it.
Now that I'm using the Note 2, I've been using the Samsung Keyboard and not liking it as much, but I really like that the numbers are on the keyboard at the top without making any other presses.
Swype/Swiftkey both make you press a button to get to the numbers.
What I would like is a combination of the number keys at the top + swype style for everything else.
Any suggestions?
I think Kii Keyboard is exactly what you're looking for.
It's a new keyboard, currently in beta. But it works extremely well and the developers are improving it very frequently.
Get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zl.inputmethod.latin
You can enable the swype features and number rows through the settings.
Enjoy!
Did I miss it or what? I couldn't find hand writing recognition.

Kii is pretty much just the 4.2 keyboard with customizations. Tried it, was nice, but nothing special.
I like the Swiftkey Flow beta myself. It was updated today with many bug fixes. Nothing like swiping out an entire sentence without lifting your finger or stylus. Working great!
Kii keyboard just updated yesterday, adding even more shortcuts to the keyboard, I would highly recommend it. It has both the swype functionality plus the number keys you are looking for. Plus I believe it's customizable user dictionary and autocorrect via space key make it leaps and bounds better than stock.

I think if you touch the Spen to the area that you want to enter the text, It will automatically enter the handwriting recognition mode. I know my device does this. I'm on chinese n7105 rom so that I can have multi window and wifi tether but I assume that most roms would have the same feature.
im very accustomed with the custom keyboard of the note 2 but I would lik 2 modify it by changing its background color from grey to another color or a picture is there any way 2 do it??? I tried using different software but it changes the layout which I don’t want it 2 change as im very comfortable with the stock one…

Currently you need to be rooted to do this.
You can try other keyboards that you can change the color.
I am currently using SwiftKey keyboard. But there are other good keyboards that you can change the color.
I use Kii Keyboard myself...very customizable, and more importantly, it has a dedicated number row on top, just like the stock keyboard. It also supports split keyboard in landscape mode.
Thumb keyboard is also worth considering. Lots if customization including altering the size of keys, colour etc.
Really suits the Note 2 as the landscape keyboard is split allowing for thumb friendly typing

Go to the Kii Keyboard settings / Keyboard Layout & Keys, and under the section called Additional Key Rows, there's an option for "Show top number row". You can have the top number row show up for portrait, landscape, both, or neither.
IMHO, smart keyboard is one of the best alternatives on Android
Is there any way to incorporate the 5th row of just numbers from the Samsung keyboard into the Google keyboard? I looked in options and didn't see anything. I prefer Google's keyboard for the better autocorrect, but I use the row of numbers far too much to want to give it up. Currently running as full stock.

I was wondering what keyboard most are using? I purchased swype with dragon for my phone. I am not familiar with the Samsung keyboard. I know they have added the ability to swipe words now like Swype does. I also own Swift key. I was wondering if it was worth the resource cost to install and use Skype or Swiftkey on this tablet.

I've been using the (old) paid edition of swiftkey on my note 10.1 and my s3 phone for a while...however, finally discovered that, for whatever reason, swiftkey was causing serious lag on my s3. I did a bit of research and am now trying TouchPal X on both phone and tablet, which is free. I'm still getting used to it but really like what it offers so far...it let me resize the keyboard and font, has a swype-like trace function, predicts words really well and has lots of customisation options. The only thing I don't like is it creates a little toolbar about the keys which I would rather be able to hide, not a huge deal though. Would say it's worth a try - and if you don't like it, at least you haven't shelled out for it!
Hope this helps
I used to use Swype, way back on my Galaxy S2. But I now prefer the Samsung keyboard on my Note II and on my Note 10.1-2014.
I find using the keyboard for cursor movement is a better use of the swiping/sliding action than the swype kind of typing.
I use the SwiftKey beta with enabled number row atm. But I like the original Samsung keyboard as well although it has some annoying things like missing arrow keys and the pop up on holding takes way too long.
Another great alternative is thumb keyboard. Great customization options.
Thumb Keyboard. Great responsiveness and customization.

I really like the stock Samsung keyboard. I've tried Skype and it never got my words right. I tried the Google keyboard and it doesn't have the secondary key long hold thing that Samsung keyboard does...

Speaking of keyboard, how do users find the virtual keyboard(s) on the 10.1 2014? I read that the ones for the 12.2 would be a full size keyboard. How about 10.1 2014? Are the keys reasonably large and well spaced?
Until recently, the Samsung keyboards were crap. But the current Samsung keyboards are pretty good. I've tried Swiftkey and the the Google keyboard and prefer the Samsung keyboard over those.
