Light sensor - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would really like to get this working.
I heard that a previous version of the fire OS, 6.2 or something, had automatic screen dimming available, but it was removed in an update. I'm pretty sure that some of the excellent fire developers could get it running on a custom ROM.
What do you think?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there's was a reason it was removed, it sucked, and wouldn't work correctly, this is a hardware issue so you could buy a better one a replace it by yourself? Not trying to be rude

What exactly was the problem? You'd expect Amazon woulda done quite a bit of testing before selling this device.

Yeah, you would expect it, but what piece of hardware in existence has zero flaws?

yes...if needed...but usually i always root my every android device...
There's no guarantee the new Kindle Fires will get rooted any time soon, and with rumors of the bootloader IDs, it seems very unlikely it will. If that's a major deciding factor in your decision to pick an Android device, you should definitely wait a while to see what happens.
But, if you're looking to get one of the current Kindle Fires, I'd say shop smart, and get one. You can get used ones on Craigslist usually for less than $100. Even "broken" ones (as long there is no physical damage) can be fixed pretty easily. Either way, for the price, it's a very solid tablet that is easily modified and has only a few minor disapointments, such as no hard volume or home screen buttons and small capacity but other than that, I'm happy with it.

In it's unrooted/unmodified state, I don't think it's worth the trouble or the money, although, I am very biased on the matter.

The new cm10/JB firmware is clean and fast. Having a camera no big deal for me, but I would like to have a microphone, since Google Now is working. Also battery life is not as good as stock, but having the latest firmware is worth it in my opinion.

[Q] Should I get the new Kindle Fire SD?

I saw the new Kindle Fire SD announced with slightly better specs available for $159. I wanted to buy it and also sign up for Prime to stream video and borrow books and have apps and stuff, plus root it and run Android 4.1 so I can have an awesome cheap "android tablet" with Amazon Prime
Is it worth the $280?
Will there be development?
Thanks in advance for aiding a little noob.

Buy it because you want to use it as an Amazon tablet. Whether or not these can ever be used as an Android tablet is the big question mark right now. There are rumors and much speculation about whether or not the bootloader will be secured in some way. The way that Amazon is marketing these things with lockscreen advertising, they have plenty of reasons to keep them from being easily manipulated like the first generation devices. Nobody will have any good idea about their potential until the right people start looking at them.
I have no idea where this $280 figure comes into play.
EDIT: I'm not sure the SD version is a good buy anyway. For $40 more, you get the better display, double the storage, bluetooth, HDMI out... that seems like the better choice.

The $280 includes Prime, sorry I didn't clarify that
$40 doesn't seem like much at all, and your views on the SD tablet are very interesting. I honestly haven't even considered the HD version. I'll check it out.
Thanks for the input.
It's still a question mark on whether the developers will be able to root the new fire easily. I suggest waiting for a month or so.

The new Kindles have a locked bootloader, but I have a feeling they'll be easily bypassed since Amazon lets you do manual updates via USB.
Ok you're asking us about 2 separate things. In my opinion, Amazon Prime is only worth $80 if you buy a lot of stuff online.
If I were in your shoes, I'd buy a used Kindle Fire or I'd find a way to get $40 together and buy a Nexus 7.

Do you trust this tablet enough to buy a 32GB?

Current 32Gb owners feel free to aviod this topic if you wish, I know you're answer will contain bias
Multitouch issues, GPS issues, random reboots. All making headlines in the tech media. When I see this I have to ask myself do I REALLY want to entrust this company with the higher priced model? I mean it's $40 ok I get it. But when it comes to customer satisfaction and not wanting to get burned you have to draw the line somewhere.
No matter what, you're not going to get burned.
They have a 1 year warranty.
The extra memory, given non expandable storage just makes sense.
If your that concerned about quality control, why buy it in the first place ?
Personally in going for more memory, because I think I may need it.
Also yeah, warranty is included (and you can always flash stock)

Just like The_Zodiac said. If you are that concerned, why buy it? You're not buying a faulty tablet. You're buying a tablet that has a possibility of being faulty. Let's just say that there is something wrong, why wouldn't you just exchange it for a new one?

No, I wouldn't trust this thing if it were given to me for free. Like most of you, I'm on my second one. Some of you are even on your third or fourth one. At that point, why not just return the thing for good or deal with the issues? You shouldn't have to return a tablet this many times in order to get a properly functioning one. This is absolutely unacceptable.
I'm worried about quality control because bad quality control shouldn't exist on such a large scale with these tablets. ASUS has had plenty of time to make a tablet properly. From their own Transformers to their other tablets all the way to the first gen Nexus 7. All of them have problems and it's annoying because you'd think after making so many, you'd figure out how to do it right, or at least bring the problem rate down low enough.
You pretty much of a 75% chance of getting a tablet with some issue that manifests itself only after you really start using the damn thing.
Come on Google, get Samsung on this.
Still on my first 32gb, no problems at all. No multi touch issues, no reboots, no dead pixels. I think one of the big problems is that you only hear the bad stuff, you don't hear from the satisfied customers.

This is also something I was thinking.
People are motivated to post about problems, not so much when everything is running smoothly.

This is the problem with these forums.. people come here to complain but don't post when they are satisfied with the product.. as such every little problem is blown out of proportion.. I have this tablet for the past 5 days and yet to face any problems.. All in all highly satisfied with my purchase.. 32 GB is a good option if you keep a lot of media or a heavy gamer.. otherwise 16 gb is good enough ..
First and foremost there is no product released till date that doesn't have some problems... if you are worried about it that you might get a faulty product then you should not buy any electronic item as there is a negligible chance that it may be faulty..
So, if you really want enjoy the nexus experience trust your gut and go ahead.. you will never be able to understand whether you will get a good product or a bad one by asking these questions in a forum

Im loving my 2nd Gen.
I have run it though all of the faults my original nexus 7 had like the flickering screen at low brightness etc etc and its not given me one single problem.
I say if you have a 16GB or God forbid the 8GB 1st gen like I pre ordered GET THE 32! I did and I love it.
Rooted it and put TWRP on it as soon as I got home running the Cyanogen nighties now.
I have no problem here. Work flawlessly. :good:
We have 2 of these 2013 32GB N7s at home.
None of them have shown any of the issues mentioned.
GPS works flawlessly on both of them(use mine daily driving around Houston)
Screen had been impeccable - no light bleed, no dead pixels, no multi-touch issues.
Having been burned before by ASUS on the Prime and disappointed by the Infinity, I bought this with a very critical eye on everything hardware related. That's why I skipped on the first N7. If there was just an iota of something wrong with the unit I have, it would have been returned in a heart beat.
I ended up buying a second one for the rest of the family. This one's mine
Glad to see ASUS finally step up...and hope it lasts longer than a device life-cycle.

Exactly.
I do have the GPS issue and a reboot usually fixes it, at may or may not stop working the rest of the trip.
The touchscreen grounding issues is annoying. If it laying on a table or mounted in my car it touch screen may become unresponsive at times. Picking it up in my hands and it seem to work fine. This issues are annoying, but I'm still keeping my tablet.
Not sure I will be buying Asus products in the future.

Same here. On my first 32GB model that I bought from my local Best Buy 2 days before the "official" release date. No issues whatsoever with mine! I completely agree that happy customers don't get on the Web to praise the tablet for working good, where as unhappy customers do get on the Web to discuss the issues that they're having! Also, I don't know of a single electronic device that doesn't have some issues with some of the products that made their way to the general public's hands! I simply don't think it's possible to have 100% perfect Quality Control for any company...

Isn't it unfortunate how some people just assume that if they're having a problem then everyone MUST be having the same exact problem! Lol
Anyway.
OP, your question should have been - Do you trust this tablet enough to spend ANY money on it. If you don't trust the device then you shouldn't spend a dime on it! As others have already said, if you're willing to spend $230 for the 16GB model, then spending $270 for the 32GB model is a no-brainer on a device that doesn't have removable storage, IF you need the storage. If you're willing to spend $230 for it, then $40 more isn't a problem. Plus you do get a 1 year manufacturer warranty with the device, so that will take care of natural issue if by chance you do have one. If you have the option to buy at a local store, then I think that is your best choice.
What I'm trying to say is this - You SHOULD NOT be contemplating the $40 difference in storage options based on trust. You SHOULD be contemplating making the purchase at all if you're concerned about it.
That said, I have ZERO issues with mine and couldn't be happier! I already have a 10" tablet and a 5.5" phone, but this 7" tablet fits nicely in between and serves it's on purposes for different scenarios. I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!

Exact same thing here (GPS every now and then... been a few days now) and unresponsive multi when ungrounded. But I have to believe Asus/Google will swap it out f they decide it's not a software thing.
If you are somewhere where a swap would e an issue though, I don't know OP. Check it out thoroughly before taking it too far
My first device had uneven gaps on the bezels. My 2nd one has been flawless. I have had no issues at all.

[Q] Is the nexus 7 even worth buying?

I've wanted a Nexus 7 for awhile now. I noticed Office Depot was selling the 32gb version for $229. And I was planning on going and buying one later today. But, after reading through this forum, I'm wondering if it's even worth buying one? Most of the threads I've seen are people just having problems with it. I don't want to drop over $200 on something that has touchscreen issues and random screen cracks. Are all of them this way, or just some? If so, is there another android tablet in the $200-300 price point that would be a better option?

The touchscreen issues are gone for me since the 4.4 update. But the screen has randomly cracked for me, in the left up corner (still working). If it worth buying one ? I don't know, this is a good tablet, smooth, fast, has a beautiful screen and all but it has some issues... I would say it depends of which phone you have.

It's slightly out of my price range. I'ma gonna be leaving here in a bit and pick a nexus up. Hopefully I don't get a defective model. If I do, I'll probably just get a kindle fire hdx and wait for cyanogenmod.
I got the nexus. So far, so good. Updated to 4.4.2. Used a screen test with no problems at all. The only thing I've noticed is a slight audio skip when switching from portrait for landscape mode on the youtube app.
For me, even considering some touch issues, it was worth it because the n7 was my first jump into android as well as a tablet form factor. I have not even scratched the surface on what there is to learn.

Video Walkthru of 4.6.1 Update

How come NO ONE has made a video walkthru of this update? Is that not a thing anymore? I would love to actually see in motion all these upgrades that Amazon has delivered . I am seriously considering a Fire Phone especially with Prime included. Anyone want to make a quick decent walkthru of this upgrade and upload to YouTube? It would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly I don't think the update included enough features to warrant a video. Sure it brought the android core to a semi modern state but it's pretty much the same Fire OS for the most part. Now that Google services and root can be had it makes the price with prime included a steal.

Yeah, you need to already have Fire to appreciate this update. Option to change wallpaper on the homescreen and smart dialing are not some sexy features screaming to be shown to the public. But, I agree, its absolutely worth buying.
