Well since Play isn't getting official ICS, you'll have to get a custom rom.. Try the Cyanogenmod9 stable release from get.cm

You will need to unlock ur bootloader first , if you havent already?? Wether u want to upgrade GB or to ICS or JB you will need your bootloader unlocked. Check if u can unlock it for free or not by typing in *#*#7378423#*#* in dialler.

I wanna say that you would need an ICS kernel , which you would need to unlock your BL for.. and the system on your phone wont matter, since ICS isn't official on our plays your will need to instal a custom Rom which will overwrite everything anyway
Thanks

Well I did some reading and I think you will need an unlocked BL and at least be on the .42 firmware, 2.3.4 like you originally posted. I know there are a few ICS roms that work in the developer section. But I think for the official beta release your gonna wanna follow what Sony said.
Edit: looks like you have to fastboot a boot.img and userdata.img and system.img

You'll be able to get ICS without an unlocked bootloader once the official update is released, since the official releases can be made into files for flashtool.
Aside from the fact it'll be done through SEUS.

Yea it works even when you are rooted.
To change the region you gotta change the serial number of the device firmware in the build properties To the location where you want to change . The serial number is in the format XXXX-XXXX.
Or you can do it the easy way using flash tool.

If you use the latest version of flash tool you don't need to have ab unlocked boot loader.
You can always unlock your boot loader if it is allowed.

first of all,ota is not available for ics!
Sony said that in a blog post!
Like gire.prasad said, an OTA update for ICS will NOT be there. You would need to use SEUS or Flashtool or any other flashing programme.

We can use the NEO L one.
But then you'll need an unlocked bootloader to flash the Neo L kernel, right?

hi
Ars-s & Arc Users USE This method : Install MIUI On Locked BootLoader ( LT18i ; LT18a ; LT15i ; LT15a )
beacuse MIUI use Official Kernel.
Installing MIUI or ICS Rom on stock kernel without the camera inberted and pad bugs would be awesome!

[Q] how to get ics on locked bootloader!??

Hey everyone,
i have a rooted xperia play r800i and i was wondering if there are some intructions on how to install ics on my phone with a locked bootloader?
thanks if you respond!!!
Short answer: you can't flash ICS with the bootloader locked.
Workaround: however some people say you can use the ICS rom of a Xperia Neo L because is basicly a Xperia Play without the gamepad, but with its rom the touchpads and the camera of the Xperia Play don't work.
You probably won't be able to get ICS on a locked bootoader (except maybe Neo L), because it requires a different kernel. To get a different kernel, you'll have to unlock your bootloader, but seeing as you have a R800i, it shouldn't be too difficult.
Just unlock your bootloader.

800at successful ics?

love my phone. but it's almost 2 years old. my phone is stock but rooted and it runs excellent since i've cleared all the bloat.
i've got a build 3.0.1.b.0.270
android version 2.3.3
is there anyone happy with stock ics on their att play? if so, does everything work 100% (wifi, text messaging, internet)?
sorry for this newbie post to the experts but would appreciate help. thanks.
Atm there's no stock ics ics firmware... Most of them are modded roms from the original ics beta or ported from other devices... But first, UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER... If it's still locked you won't be able to flash any custom kernel or Rom...

To install ics you need to have your bootloader unlocked. Other than that your set to go with everything else.

On Krisdees Sony ICS Beta everything works great battery life with lupus 720 p ICS +GB......unlocking your boot loader is your primary objective...IdK if your being a r800a makes things different...as I am r800i
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
R800a and R800i are the same thing, it doesn't matter which in one you have... unlock your bootloader via zergrush and i recommend you to try either the express rom or the markpython rom, both have NXT looks... if you wanna try something a little different, try de hybrid rom by krisdee...
Have to pay

As far as I know, you have to pay to have your bootloader unlocked if you have the r800at. I recommend Jinx13, I got it done in about 10 minutes.
