Real Multiwindow mode? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to enable MultiWindow apps like we can on the Note 10.1? I mean real windows, like the cascading type.
Its really an awesome feature, and for some reason I thought the Note 2 would have the same thing since it came out first and advertised Multitasking so much, but then I buy it and it has this silly window sliding thing that can only run 2 apps like cornerstone did.
Don't get me wrong I absolutely love the phone, I just thought it should have had this from the beginning?
Could there be some dpi mod or tablet mode modification that could enable this feature?
Here is a screen shot of how it works on the Note 10.1

Thank you for the link.
I don't really need it anymore since I switched to more AOSP 4.2.2 roms.
I just wanted to have the info out there if someone else needed it.

Why would you switch to AOSP, out of interest? :/ If you can't stand touchwiz, use project AOSP, have you tried that?
As for multiwindow, probably owing to the smaller screen size IMO. Still yeah, I prefer windows - at least would've nice if they'd left the option for us to choose

Nice, I didn't realize there was such a good looking themed TW rom like this. I will give this a try, there are a few things I miss from TW.
Thanks for the info.
And yes that was one of the main reason I switched, Touch Wiz is hideous and I got tired of trying to theme it and themes being half broken.
But now that I switched AOSP just feels like a breath of fresh air, nice ui for multi density configurations, less ram usage at boot, 4.2.2 lockscreens and widgets, a nice navbar (I disable my hardware keys). CM Theming engine. AOKP/PA/CM10 features.
And whole bunch of other little things I'm forgetting.
And soon we may be getting some Window Management.

Yeah multi DPI + 4.2.2 lockscreen widgets is definitely cool. That said, battery life is sub par on almost all AOSP roms, and you miss a hell lot of touchwiz features. IF it's mainly the touchwiz layout, Project AOSP should pretty much fix that for ya as I was on the same boat as yourself before

Its not so bad tbh. I'm using Slimbean 4.2.2 atm and I get screen on time of about 5-6hours almost the same as most of the touchwiz ROMs here. With aosp it just feels lighter and changing dpi without worrying about broken layout, incompatibility, etc is no longer. Even if battery performance is slightly lowered its still worth it. At least you don't have to pay anything for a complete customization as oppose to Simplistic framework that you need to buy in order to have that ease in customizing touchwiz ROMs.

I get 6 hours at worst and mostly around 7-8 hours on average. Oh and I get almost everything without simplistic on Project AOSP, but bought it anyways to get the full AOSP look. What incompatibility issues are you talking about?
I see no point in missing out on Touchwiz features and my favorite kernel Perseus (including, but not limited to the color calibrations and enhanced video playback) for those. I love AOSP on my Nexus 7, and have PA on it, but highly unlikely that I'd put on an AOSP rom on Note II.
If you really like it, good for you then

Well you see ive developed a habit of always reducing the DPI to around 240 and ive gotten use to it, and i like to heavily theme the rom. On the Sammy based roms, when applying a flash-able touchwiz theme and reducing the DPI through Build.prop editor/ xposed fw, the theme is suddenly absent in some parts of the UI such as the power menu. You need to download a theme thats been modified to work for a lower DPI. Basically the problem is it feels bloated after flashing so many different mods to get the result i want, whereas, on the aosp its all there and centralized into the Settings menu.
I cant help but think why the huge difference in size between an aosp and Samsung stock rom. My slimbean rom is only about 200-300MB with gapps and extras whereas the stock rom is around 1 - 1.2GB.

Well if you're that into modifying DPI, then yeah. As for bloat, you could choose which samsung apps to install while setup, so no biggie for me

Paranoid Android Rom interest?

Any interest in having this Rom ported over? I have no clue how to do it but would love to see it ported over as it is and or ported over with AOKP as the base.

Cool. Good to hear. The rom looks great and has everything I want in it except probably based on AOKP would make me happier.
The best part of the rom so far has to be this
20120504v0.4preview: Apps were too small? Problem solved!
First ever Android ROM with Per-App-Density feature, it once and for all solves the problem that was tablet mode. You never, ever have to deal with apps that are too small again since now you can decide how apps, systemapps, framework-elements and even widgets are scaled by defining their native dpi seperately from the system DPI. Its an experimental feature and for now these values are defined in your /system/build.prop - it has drawbacks (maily notifications can look a bit strange), but that will be fixed in time. Warning: Keyboards MUST run in system DPI!
A list of apps and predefined values is included, this should include most of what you need. everything else is blown up to 210 dpi per standard. if you still need apps to be bigger, get a build.prop editor from the market, edit and reboot.
Trebuchet fixes: Folder Name cut-off, landscape name cut-off, divider bars
Please set your Font to "Normal" in the System Settings, you won't need "Huge" anymore and all this does now is provoke overlapping.
Haven't really gotten into the tablet roms much but this one looks SICK!
I'd definitely rock this.
HyDra Rom looks pretty much the same except for some theming and the wallpaper maybe check it out
Yeah u gotta love that dpi per app feature and evidently it is being worked on for the galaxy s2, which I am guessing is the international variant. And I do like the hydra rom. Just not that Mega blue theme. Lol I'm sure I could apply a different theme but I'd prob end up breaking something but hopefully someone will port this to our device. Looks good

just need two things
1. cyanogenmod or any stable aosp rom. aokp does not test their tab related code and you get a whole bunch of broken things that come with it, its not a good base for paranoidandroid. cm works out of the box.
2. a dev whos willing to port paranoidandroid and help us making the hybrid features better.

as far as i can tell its plain tablet mode. paranoid is hybrid mode. we do drop systemUI into tabmode, but do our best to not trash your device by doing so. you'll get stock look on most of your apps, can even decide if bigger or smaller.

th feature we're working on right now is called per-app-layout, you decide if your apps dress in mobile or tab dress, all without reboot:
we forked trebuchet from source and optimized it to run in that mode, its the best possible launcher for tablet mode
hacked a whole bunch of apps that normally crash on you or give you problems: market works 100%, keyboard doesnt stretch, gtalk doesnt stretch, etc. in short, this entire rom is made to support you in that mode because we know it gives you hell normally. in that its very different from tablet mode roms.
Yes the per app dpi is what makes it stand out than just a normal hybrid tablet ui mod. No need to deal with small fonts. No need to select large fonts. So this is not the same as Hydra as some seem to think.

Paranoid Android and ICSorcery are what my girl runs on her Verizon Ynez. They are simply beautiful works. I worry how they would work on the e4gt without kernel source, though.
I've ported this before everything worked except for the keyboard. I know that I'm cooking up something tonight with a fresh start. I'm pretty sure I can get the keyboard to work this time.

Android 4.3 make our gnex fly again

I have to say that I'm really impressed what google has done with this update.
Memory leak is gone, With all my apps installed I have constantly about 200 mb free ram even with Apps that using heavy ram like facebook, messenger and so on.
Systemui lag also gone, no crazy lags in recents or lockscreen and I can finally use static wallpapers instead of live wallpapers.
Camera rotation lag is reduced by a lot and the animation has changed so you dont see that weird rotation anymore.
Stock launcher was never so smooth...I have to say i had never such smooth experience especially with appdrawer swyping. It's even better than nova launcher was before.
Performance overall has improved a lot i think it has to to with new OpenGL-ES-3.0. Gives boost to almost all Apps I have. Whatsapp scrolling through contacts is smooth, facebook scrolling was horrible at 4.2.2 now smooth and many other apps.
For me it feels like having new phone again. Before 4.3 I was thinking of buying new smartphone but now I will definitly stay for longer.
In this case I understand why pure google is always > modded Versions.
just my 2 cents
Let's see if it lasts. I'm sticking with Liquid Smooth 2.9 for now, with Lagfix on daily early morning schedule, Seeder, Triple Turbo Boost Mod for extra 1 Gig RAM and so on. Until they release Liquid Smooth based on 4.3.

I agree! I am so happy with this update, though it's only been two days for me so I may not have had enough experience yet to comment.
So far so good - I have not experienced any of the annoyances I found on 4.2.2: no nonresponsive phone when trying to start it, and so far (knock on wood) I have not experienced the crashes that would not go away on 4.2.2 even with nightly reboots and factory reset. Although I am not rooted now, and I have not restored all my apps yet (will restore after root).
I think the battery may be better too, because I forgot my phone in my car all night, after using it all day and then for 1 hour with gps navigation without plugging it in, so I expected it to be completely dead in the morning, but it wasn't! (Though it was close). I really hope this first impression lasts, but so far I'm really impressed!
Btw guys shouldn't the 4.3 notification is different than 4.2.2?
Why my notification is still the same like 4.2.2... is it because of dirty flash?
Clean flash users... are yours notification different?
Scrolling could be better on 4.3

The clock app is still super stuttery when you scroll through the alarms. On the N4 it is smooth and I am sure it is not because of the hardware.
Also if you start the stopwatch and swipe back to the clock it is smooth but not so when you press the lap button so that the red thing appears and then you try to swipe back to the clock. It is a minor thing but still..

Why should the notifications be different?
The notification pulldown UI isn't any different in 4.3, the only difference is that apps can now tap into your notifications and display them just like the pulldown can. It's a new API.
Also, even if there was a difference SystemUI would crash if there was a conflict, it's not like some things would carry over and some wouldn't, it just simply wouldn't work at all. Lots of force closes.

Tablet UI?

I must be missing something simple here, but when I fake out the density in my build.props (eg 250 to act as 9", 226 for 10", etc...) I see individual apps start drawing in tablet mode (eg dual pane in Gmail). However, the overall system UI never switches out of "phablet mode". Has anybody successfully gotten their n7 flo into full tablet ui a la the n10? (no top status bar, etc...)

Really, the only thing I miss about that tablet UI is the placement of the software buttons. The rest of it isn't anything too fancy.

As far as Xposed, I just got sdk18 running via manual install via bits & pieces from:

The one observation I had was that even though I was setting dp/res to 800x1280 in Xposed, to my eyes the actual appearance looks more like it's doing the math against 1200x1920. It's not a big deal, just my impression when I was coming up w/ dpi numbers for various apps.

To me this is phablet mode because that is what it has always been called. Many people still like tablet UI so I doubt devs will stop supporting it on larger screens such as the nexus 7 or anything without hard back and home buttons really imho. Hopefully someone will make a flashable mod for tablet UI soon. Or custom ROM yay such as cm10.1 or carbon ROM or the 10 or 12 others that include it.

I understand what you're trying to say. My point is that that "tablet mode" you speak of was deprecated with ICS. What you have on your Nexus 7 and the old Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 IS the 'tablet UI' per Google. What you're talking about is a mod now.

Its a mod for sure. I suppose I see why you could make a case for calling it tablet UI but really since there is only 1 UI and not split its just the 4.3 UI plus that would get darn confusing to my bedrock brain cause its been called phablet mode on so many threads for so many of my tablets. I have been playing around with android a bit myself though Im just a noob but if someone doesn't work it out that is better than me I might dive in head first and probably blow up my garage in the process since I kinda love what I call tablet UI a lot. All in what you get used to probably.

As far as Xposed, I just got sdk18 running via manual install via bits & pieces from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43923460&postcount=2249&nocache=1&z=526156020350754 and all of its various linked posts.
The one observation I had was that even though I was setting dp/res to 800x1280 in Xposed, to my eyes the actual appearance looks more like it's doing the math against 1200x1920. It's not a big deal, just my impression when I was coming up w/ dpi numbers for various apps.

Anybody else try the latest builds for the Xposed FW? I was going great but then chrome started crashing whenever I scrolled a page. Gmail did it occasionally, too - this happened whether or not I had customized those apps, or even bypassed the custom settings module completely. I restored to a nandroid from just before installing Xposed FW & all is well. Guess I'll stick to system-wide dpi changes for now; was just curious if anybody else had tried w/ success.
Okay i installed and reboot the tablet ui module but when i click on it it says it doesnt have a interface so how do i enable the tablet ui?

Um could be way wrong but changing DPI doesn't change into old school tablet mode. I think it goes by screen resolution and size and its might be tied to the launcher

Flashed last night. Looks nice. The custom theme is fun. I did notice navigation bar height didn't work, and by default the navigation bar seems really big. I did a clean install. Wiped system, all that good stuff. So I'm not sure if I did something else wrong or if it's just a bug. And the 3 dot menu even for the big menu is a bit odd looking but that is just a preference thing and I can change that easily enough. XDA app wouldn't get past the splash screen, don't know if the rom could effect that. I restored another rom and it works fine. Not sure. Overall though nice work on the rom. Keep it up!

OK, didn't think to look there as that is normally in the navigation bar settings. The options are in navigation bar settings they just didn't appear to do anything.

I am having hybrid setting crash when trying to go to tablet mode. Anyone else?

I really like this ROM! I like all the animations and stuff..but I am having really bad reception issues with the ROM. I was previously on Purity and didn't have any issues with reception. It keeps getting poor signal, or sometimes drops calls, or no bars/grey bars. I am using FK01/FK02 radios. I just noticed this is also 4.3.1! haha
Are there any screen shots? I'm using Sourcery and I love it but they stopped developing at 4.2.2
Is there anything in 4.3 that's worth leaving a ROM I love and don't really need anything changed?
The crack flasher in me is asking.

4.3 should be smoother and is what is currently being developed (roms/kernels actively being built with new/more optimized features)
One big thing with some 4.3 kernels now are that many have commits to reclaim more ram the os had dedicated to different things (which wasn't really needed)
For example mpokang kernel has anywhere from 750+ to about 775 total ram available vs less than 700 available stock

Be careful in saying the reclaimed ram wasn't needed. To get the full benefit you lose 1080p video. Its not necessary for some but I like to have it. A lot if people really like those kernels though. So definitely worth doing a bit of research.

It depends on which kernel (and in mpokang kernels case, which version) some, like Franco kernel reclaim quite a bit of ram and everything still works perfectly (including 1080p video)

Not sure about this ROM in particular...but from what I understand this is a common issue amongst many 4.3.x ROMS.

Which KitKat 4.4.x ROM have you used on an SPH-D710 and would recommend?

A few years ago this seemed to be limited to either Cyanogen or a couple other ROMS, I had performance issues with CM9 and used a custom ROM instead. Now it seems like everyone has their own flavor and builds. I'm currently on a 4.1.2 ROM, I think it was SlimBean.
I'm just looking for a close-to-stock 4.4 ROM for Sprint Epic 4g Touch, that is stable and works. Does anyone have a ROM you have tried and would recommend?
I'm leaning towards Mookie or CM11
Thanks and sorry for the noob post.
Its not kitkat, but have you checked out Project X ? I am running KitKat on my nexus tab. Though have solid custom rom options that am bouncing between , really wish I could install Project X .

I had not, but I did some googling and it looks pretty nice. I may download it and give it a try.
I already installed CM11 VILLUMINATI. It was a bit tricky, but after following the steps at the bottom of page 77 of that thread, I got it running and it seems fine so far. CM always takes some time for me to get used to, so I'll run it for a few days and see how it goes.
Hope it goes well. Must say, battery life is crazy good and the highly customize-able launcher (can save settings and implement when flashing updates et cetera) @bilgerryan created are awesome - like borderline time for a tattoo time awesome. Not to mention the folks in the forum are cool - good people. Anyway, good luck with everything.

Thanks! So far, I only have a few issues with the build. I can't figure out how to get rid of the Google search bar at the top and I can't figure out how to scale the number of columns/rows on the desktops. Other than that, the lack of 4G is hardly noticeable, even here in Silicon Valley. Can't get Kies to restore my data via USB, going to try WiFi connection tonight.

From my experience, you can't do anything with kies unless you have the version of android that's originally on the phone. So it's either Kitkat or 4.1.2, bloatware, and kies. I think we both know who the clear winner is here! I've also been using the VILLUMINATI ROM and I've had exceptional battery life and fast response from my phone at the same time. As for the Google search bar at the top, I think that is permanent unless you download one of those custom theme app thingies (can't remember what they're called), but doing that kinda defeats the purpose of having Kitkat for me, as I absolutely love the new white theme with everything. I've also noticed that from using those theme apps before that they tend to drain battery fast.
EDIT: As for 'what rom I would reccomend' it would have to be VILLUMINATI, even though it's the only one I've used so far. It works, and it's good. I'll be using this rom until there is a better update somewhere, or if I find a game breaker somewhere.

You know there are custom TouchWiz ROMs out there don't you? With tons of extra features and no bloatware. I say try my Project X and see if you still go with the bug-filled AOSP ROMs with quiet mic volume and speaker volume. BTW Kies is useless, try using Titanium Backup or ROM Toolbox next time.

Ok, I'll take a look at your rom later, thanks. Also, I have never really used kies except just to see what it was, I was just referring to the post I quoted.

Here are my two cents. Personally, I like VILLUMINATTI better than Mokee, mainly because Mokee has a weird thing it does when scrolling lists. It makes the lower list items really small, and expands them to full size as you scroll down a list. Cool looking once or twice, but not something I can handle on a daily basis. They are both extremely fast and smooth ROMS, and they use very little RAM, like 30% less! Just make sure to get the best ICS modem for your area (mine was FE22), update the GPS config file using FasterFix, and load in Textra so you can activate MMS easily. Of course, you'll loose 4G and dock connectivity with either ROM.
However, I can't use the 4.4 ROMS right now because they both have the same two bugs. Firstly, the Orientation Sensor doesn't respond correctly. Secondly, they don't communicate well with Google Glass (no phone calls). So I went back to Touched By an S4 ROM, which is a TW based 4.1.2 ROM that performs really well "out of the box".
Once those two bugs are fixed I'm definitely switching back to VILLUMINATTI CM11 because it unleashes this phones true capabilities.
Given the above offerings, coupled with the fact that only the individual user can make their own determination as to what is most stable for their device, going to close this.
XDA is not a support site as it relates to asking what is most stable, best etc, for roms and or kernels. This is because threads like these become places of arguments and trolling commentary.
All users are expected and encouraged to do their own research and review of development threads to arrive to the answer they need.
