VLC has released a beta. Unfortunately, it is not available in the US Play Store yet, but appears to be available in some countries. Hence, I've posted the file up here and can confirm that this version works with the Nexus 4.

The second important change is the introduction of full hardware acceleration. With this release, It has been able to decode 4K streams on a Nexus 5 or a BayTrail tablet.

It also features the better looking subtitles support that was added on VLC on the desktop.
Software decoding has been accelerated too.

Versions
This release of VLC for Android is the 17th Beta. It's numbered 0.9.0, since it's the last important version before the 1.0.0 release.
It's available everywhere, except in the US, but will be pushed as a staging release on the store.
It will be finally available in the US with our next release.
v0.1.4 - This update is mandatory for those using Android 4.4 KitKat because fixes video playing.
v0.1.3 - This update is mandatory for those with new Android 4.3 JWR66N/JWR66V because previous versions will not play video, only audio.
v0.1.2 - Improves decoding speed, solves a few crashes and misbehaviors, cleans the code and changes the license of the VLC engine.
v0.1.1 - This is the 13th beta of VLC for Android.
0.1.1 is fixing a few bugs of 0.1.0.
v0.1.0 - This is the twelfth beta of VLC for Android.
Bugfix and performance release compared to the previous ones.
It should solves quite a few crashes and misbehaviours, and should prepare the framework for future improvements.
If you have audio issues, a preference setting allows you to use a different audio method, like AudioTrack (Java).
Another preference is available for video output (YV12 is the fastest, RGB32 the safest).
v0.0.11 - This is the eleventh beta of VLC for Android.
0.0.11 is a fixing release for crashes occurring in 0.0.9
v0.0.10 - This is the tenth beta of VLC for Android.
0.0.10 is a fix for crashes above 0.0.9
v0.0.9: - This is the ninth beta of VLC for Android.
The new beta is an important release after 0.0.8; it tests new audio and video output methods, and fixes many bugs.
The audio now uses OpenSL ES, which should help improve audio/video sync. However, a preference setting allows you to use the former method, AudioTrack (Java).
For video, one can now select YV12 output: it should be faster, if it works
For older devices, 16-bit output should help display speed.
v0.0.8: - This is the eighth beta available of VLC for Android.
The new beta is a small release above 0.0.7, improving the SDcards management (including external), fullscreen playback, thumbnailing speed, headphones support, orientation behavior, Android 4.2, lock screen control and notifications, audio glitches and audio interface sorting. It also brings many fixes for crashes and issues that were reported by users,

It's not available for the US yet. Don't know why.
MX Video Player & DICE Player working well for me.
DICE makes some distorted sounds on some MKVs, MX works completely though.
I was excited for VLC but they are way too slow on putting out something usable and letting users actually USE IT (as Stryder5 mentioned)

OP updated. Thanks! If you want (and if it's possible), you should PM a mod to take over the OP of this thread. I don't get VLC in the play store so I don't get update notifications. Hi,
I just want to inform about an app that has been developed by xda members and has been reported as working properly on Galaxy S, and might be of your interest.
The aplication searchs in internet for tv shows video links that can be played directly on android, with an easy to use interface and fullscreen support.
There is a Lite (free) version with 12 preselected tv shows and a full (paid) version with 500+ tv shows.
The tv shows that can be watched on the lite version are :
Friends, The X-Files , Family Guy, Being Human, Monk, Lost, Heroes , Misfits, Prison Break , Breaking Bad, The Simpsons, South Park
You can read the full thread on this XDA forum link if you need more information.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903351
I post it here because not all users go arround the forum , out of their device subforum.
If you find any bug or any suggestion, we are listening to improve, the aplication is still under development, the new feature "send liks to email to be watch on a computer" has just been added this week and we will have new features soon.
regards
Please, test fast forward and rewind in Frogmovz server, pause it before flash forward or rewind. Report if it work for Samsung galaxy S.
Thanks
It's one of my base apps on my phone, works like a charm. No lag, no buffer, smooth playback. Imagine this + Tv output
There are only 12 shows in the light version, but apperantly those are most of my favorite.
Lite shows:
- Friends
- X-files
- Family guy
- Being Human
- Monk
- Lost
- Heroes
- Misfits
- Prison break
- Breaking bad
- South park
- The simpsons

Tried on Heroes Frogmovz.
Hi,
Thanks for the reports.
We are working to make FF and RW working in karambavidz that is the only server that does not support it at the moment. It should be working soon. We are also considering direct download for files and the inclusion of movies.
Thanks for the continuous support from all XDA members.
Regards.
Movies would be a huge addition, I recommend moviewatch.in, there are loads of servers too choose from, say "putlocker" is one of the best.
I'd definetely buy the app(would even pay more) if you implement movies, I'm more of a movie watcher, than a show junkie.

I think thanks Surdu_Petru it will be rooted soon, too.
Has anyone installed this already?
Does it kill your tablet?
no on 3 tablets
I just installed this coming from 4.0.7 and it has worked fine.
I tried to use the built in updater but it did not show the update, so I downloaded the file and flashed.
Nothing major so far.. early days but my device is NOT bootlooping

For those who updated, do you see the excessive RAM usage as reported by 4.0.24 users?
please, honestly. is there some improvement on the touchscreen dead after long standby and of touchscreen in general? thank you

How much free memory would you call OK ??
I've got a 1GB device and in 4.0.7 had >500MB free after boot, but with 4.0.24 it's only about 300MB. I've heard of people with 512MB devices who only have 35MB left after a fresh start.
From what I read, Android 4.0.4 should be using more memory than 4.0.3 ... but it seems a lot, 200MB more RAM usage.
Hi, I installed no problem.
by cons, regarding memory management there is a concern as for 4.0.24.
in the aplication menu program displays the current 0.00 using memory, I think again is good to have a return on 4.0.7, if not find a system to manage memory better knowing that v6 Supercharger is lag in games. Here is my return
Memory left from my 1gb = 300mb so yes, there appears to be a memory problem in latest build.
TrOjAn
Definitely using more memory now but it seems like it's put to good use, the tablet is wicked fast now! After the initial boot it took some time to find its feet which was most noticeable switching between home and panel screens but now it's been on a while and I've started most of my regular apps the difference is quite apparent. Starting up and switching apps has had a major makeover and is stunningly fast. As specified Wifi is now also connecting consistently now, tho it too early to say anything definitively. As of now, it seems absolutely worthwhile to upgrade.
oh my !
Have anyone who has had a replacement updated yet ...and if so ......how was it ??:good:
The sound volume is still useless would have been worth the upgrade to fix that!!!
TrOjAn
I switched from Clean_Slim&Fast_V01 to that version to see if the touchscreen issues are solved.
Had some problems with the aos-file, so in the end I had to format the disk - but it might be I just didn't get how to do it properly.
After installing everything seems okay. Touchscreen isn't that sensitive anymore (which is GOOD) but I'll wait some days of testing before being too cheerful.
If I press a little bit harder on the touchscreen, still there are those ghost fingers. But if I don't touch too hard, everything is fine (and better than before).
More results after a weekend of testing...
Just updated, everything seems to be a lot faster ......but best of all it works:good:

Quadrant score
Hi guys,
Just updated mine and the quadrant scores seems to be a lot better!
Noticed other thing, the native media players (video and music) are not working properly (at least in mine).
now on 4.0.25 rooted - no problems
Archos 80 G9 - 8Gb,512MB RAM, 1,2GHz
had the 4.0.7 rooted by surdu petru ->ok
tried the 4.0.24 -> "bricked" my tablet -> tapping for 5s on the touch made the device to boot
formatted all by recovery menue (not easy to get in)
recovered 4.0.7 stock -> ok -> SDE still working !
installed slim clean and fast by surdu petru -> ok
installed 4.0.25 rooted by surdru petru -> ok
waiting for OC kernel
Hey everybody.
New at the forum, but i want to say that, untill now (6 hours in testing) i find the new 4.0.25 update quite solid. Had have touchscreenn probs, which were the most annoying among bugs from this tablet that i have experienced with former official releases, but have to say that for instance fake touche and phantom touch problems seems to be out of the way. This text for instance is smoothly typed in, and for testing, the registration on xda and using the app for android proves to be example of smooth inputting via the onscreen keyboard. Untill now i've experienced alot of trouble with entering text, auto-hitting backspace and enter key at random. Now it seems stable without calibrations for 6 hours. Keeping u posted

The things that I find most interesting are the changes to mingw to support MSVCRT 11 and (hopefully, presumably) also support ARM with Windows. That could make it a lot easier to port other open-source programs which traditionally compile only under GCC. This could lead to a large new wave of ported apps, including games (I'd live to play Battle for Wesnoth on my tablet, for example).
vs project for vlc:https://github.com/sunqueen
I am able to compile it but it doesnt work on my pc.

Android 4.3 has officially been announced – it's been in the wild on Google Play Edition devices for a while, but the unveiling was put off for today. So, what's new? Well, 4.3 is a minor upgrade so it brings minor improvements and refines the user experience, rather than delivering game-changing features.
Multi-user support was introduced in 4.2 and it's updated in 4.3 with the new restricted profiles. A restricted profile can limit what content and apps can be used – even limit in-app stuff like what levels of a game can be played.
The suite of stock apps has been updated - Hangouts now officially replaces Talk and Keep is available out of the box. The Drive, Chrome and Maps applications have been revamped too.
The way Android handles notifications has been changed too. For one, you can view your notification history. Also, third party apps have access to notifications, which will help smart watches and apps that sync notifications across devices.
There are plenty of changes under the hood too. OpenGL ES 3.0 is now supported (Google presented impressive improvements in 3D game graphics) and the graphics stack should be faster overall. For games, Google unveiled the Google Play Games app, which lets you keep track of what your friends are playing and a leader board of achievements in the game.
The "master key" exploit has been incorporated into Android 4.3, of course.
Bluetooth 4.0 with Low Energy mode (low power usage and longer range for low-bandwidth accessories like those fitness tracking gadgets) is now supported in stock Android. Before, each maker had to roll its own drivers. Also for Bluetooth, AVRCP 1.3 is supported, meaning the phone can stream metadata about the currently playing song to the wireless speakers (or your car's stereo).
Wi-Fi can be kept on at all times to determine your position, even when you toggle it off.
A new hardware-based encryption for DRM has been added so content providers will be more willing to stream high-quality content. A new Netflix app is among the first to make use of this and streams 1080p video (it's now available in the Play Store).
An Android 4.3 update will be available on Nexus devices from the Galaxy Nexus up (4, 7, 10, you name it). Google Play devices - Galaxy S4 and Nexus One Google Play Edition will get the update soon too.

Wonder if erickas or maclaw are gonna make 4.3 Android?

Just back to hoping for kernel 3+ and a non-laggy or less-laggy than CM10, since CM10 is much smoother than CM10.1

Latest Google Play system update expands Android 13’s Photo Picker to older Android versionsGoogle released the Google Play system update for May 2022 earlier this month. Google’s initial changelog mentioned that the new update brings features like Self Share for Nearby Share and improvements to Play Store. But it seems there’s a lot more exciting stuff in the latest update than Google originally disclosed.
Google has updated the Play system patch notes to highlight some new features and improvements coming with the Play system May 2022 update. The most notable is the Photo Picker feature. First introduced in Android 13, the feature aims to restrict how apps access media files on your device. Rather than granting full permission to all media files, the Photo Picker will only allow apps to access select media files.
Google’s official documentation for Photo Picker mentions that the feature will be rolling out to devices running Andriod 12 and Android 11 via a Google Play system update.
Upcoming Google Play system updates are expected to include new features related to the photo picker. In one such update, the library will add support for apps that target Android 11 (API level 30) or higher
