Has anyone noticed this? Go to battery settings and look for android system and you will see what apps keep your phone awake and for how long. I'm pretty sure this is the reason why we lose a lot of battery very quickly. I have flashed a lot of ROMs and it seems like all of them have it. Anyone know how to fix it?

Have you been sure to perform clean wipes in between flashing these different ROMs? I have found that, typically, when Android System is hogging battery, it is due to a dirty system. Try a full wipe and reflash. This should hopefully solve your problem.

I'm sure I have wiped between ROMs. Factory wipe data in cwm, wipe cache and delvik. What else is there to wipe between ROMs?

Well, now that I looked at your SS more closely, your Android System doesn't appear to be hogging your battery. Mine is currently using 8% total as well, though my phone isn't keeping awake.
P.S. Those are the necessary wipes.

On the Battery section of Settings (under ICS) I see that com.android.phone is using 92% of my battery, but I made only 2 minutes of voice calls. It also shows that it's been running for 8 hours on an uptime of 9 hours. Also, the process com.android.phone crashes upon placing or receiving any call, but I can still get voice but no UI. What's wrong with com.android.phone?

Yours, haha. CM10 nightly.
Yeah, that's not right. And this is the first I've heard of it. Have you done anything...odd with it? I know you don't want to hear it, but the simplest solution would be to do a clean install (format system, boot and factory reset). Then install the ROM and go from there. Keep track of what you do, and if it pops up again, try and remember what you did recently to it.

Haven't done anything out of the usual... I'll probably wipe and reflash tonight's build. Thanks though
Let me start of by saying I am a Noob. I have been learning about the root and custom ROM process for about three weeks now. I have succesfully flashed the latest PacMan ROM and the latest SlimBean ROM. Both times I have reverted back to my Stock ROM. Everytime I flash a new ROM using TWRP, I wipe the Cache, Davlik Cache, do a Factory Reset, and Wipe the ROM. This leads me to believe I getting a clean flash, and everything seems to go smooth with the install. I have no problems with the inital boot, and it usually happens pretty quick.
I understand that each custom ROM has some great new features, but it hasn't out weighed that the battery life and speed (responsiveness) is still better on the Stock ROM. Is the reason I am seeing this is because the ROM's I have tried are 4.2.2 versus the stock 4.1.1? Is there something obvious that I am missing? If it appears that I am flashing correctly, is there a ROM that is should try the will improve me battery life and speed?
Thank you!
a full wipe also includes format /system.
how long are you using these roms before flashing back or trying a new one? the software takes a little time to settle in so if you're hopping onto a new rom every few days, you may not see the best that each rom has to offer you.

Do I format the internal memory of in TWRP? After doing some that is TWRP still functional? I have been afraid to do that because when I think of formatting it wipes everything. My thinking was the phone wouldn't operate.
Can you walk me through it in TWRP?
Thanks!

as long as your recovery is current, you have a backup (nandroid) and you have the ROM/gapps zips on the device, you're good to format (wipe) system. that erases the OS and allows for a new, clean install.
make a backup (if you dont have one)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik
wipe system
flash rom
flash gapps (if required)
reboot
let device sit a few minutes and reboot again.
Theres more to it then just flashing and having a better running phone. If that was it everyone and their mother would do it. You need to learn about the system and ROM you are operating on and tweak the settings to optimal performance for your phone, and more importantly to your liking.
Every phone is different. If one rom works great on one persons phone it may not run so good on another persons. You have to learn and have enough know how to be able to set the phone up in a way that runs good for you. While it may be frustrating at times I guarantee if you take the time to try out a couple different roms for a couple days at least, and play around with the settings until you know what they all do and why they are there and how work for or against your goals you will end up with a phone that you enjoy using on all levels. Features, performance, looks, etc.
Hope this helps, and good luck finding your custom rom 'sweet spot'
Try AxisM RLS18 rom its a great rom with so many features to it.

Update: I searched for a ROM using a 3.0 Kernel and found one with great battery life reviews call "Sons of Android". I installed it using TWRP 2.4.4 with the directions quoted above, and everything is great execpt for two things.
First, I always seem to get mirrored data. There is a Emulated folder and an SDcard0 folder that appear to have the same data. I have searched in the forums and found that it is an issue, but havent seen a solution.
Second, Netflix is draining the battery twice as fast as the stock 4.1.1. Before I could watch 45 minutes with 10% of battery and now the same 45 minutes is taking 20-25% of battery. Is this a 4.2.2 problem. It has been a problem on all the ROM's I have tried.
I am going to stick with this ROM for a while beacuse other than netflix the battery life is good. Just about the same as my stock ROM.
Thank you for all of your help for the Noob.
I have been having this annoying problem since day 1 and cannot get an answer to it. Even google has failed me. So, whenever I choose app defaults (like launcher or different sms app, etc) they stick as defaults until I reboot. When I reboot, it asks me again for each one. I have this same problem whether I am rooted or not, have had it with stock roms, etc. Why is this happening? It is very frustrating.
Wow... no one else is having this problem? Should I return it for exchange? It seems like a software glitch, but a factory reset doesn't fix it.
Still having this issue. Is no one else having it? Are there file permissions I can check? Is there a file not properly getting saved which holds defaults? I hate having to constantly remind my phone which apps to use for what.

As I stated in the OP, on every ROM, rooted or not. I have done a wipe with every ROM I have used. Even occurs when I do a factory reset with a stock rom. Fix permissions does not help either.
I have a sneaking suspicion that there is no such thing as a full factory reset.

Did you try wiping /system prior to flashing the various ROMs? Typically when someone does a factory reset, it means they are clearing /data and the caches. It sounds to me like something is messed up in your /system partition, which might be persistent across ROMs.

Yes... full wipe before each rom... and full wipes after factory resets.
does anyone know which file is responsible for storing app defaults? I'd like to take a look and see if it is getting overwritten, or what the deal might be. This is an annoying problem. Having to keep selecting my video player, launcher, etc.

Yes... e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g
I have fully wiped (yes all of it) prior to a stock rom install... and factory reset plus fully wiped (yes all of it) after a stock rom install.
yes... wiped to the point of losing ALL- ALL--ALL data. I have taken this thing down clean.
I have one-clicked, standard odin'd, kies, dialer pad reset, recovery mode reset, settings reset....
Every time... I am able to get back to stock clean... but nothing is resolving to the point where app defaults will start behaving. They arent behaving.
I lose them after every reboot.
app defaults not sticking on reboot
I am also having this problem on my Sprint SGS3 (not rooted).

I don't understand why you need that. KnishKnosh understands what the issue is. Are you not understanding what I am describing?
Surely you have seen this phenomenon before. Whenever there are multiple apps to accomplish a task (i.e. browsing, launching, texting, etc), it will ask you which app you want to use. You then choose an app and tell it to always use it or to use it just once. What I am saying is that even when I choose "always," it only sticks until I reboot.... then it asks again. This is not normal behavior.
I have the same issue as well Edufur, So you're not alone.
Usually my problem is Home Launchers not sticking on reboot.
And coincidentally its all the home launcher apps i paid for pro excluding Holo Launcher and Nova.
Apex Pro, LauncherPro+, ADWLauncher Ex are the ones for me that always resets its default status for being home.
There's a lot of people that has this problem and there hasn't been a fix for it.
Its more like a Device Compatibility issue for certain applications to me then anything else.
Because my friends LG OG doesn't have these issues.

I want to see your issue resolved. That is why I am asking all the questions, and for more information. I do not have the Device in front of me. So I must ask questions in order to help track down the issue. Yes I have seen the issue before. Spark91 brings up an interesting question. Are you using the Stock TW Launcher, or a different one ?
i uploaded scrernshot. hope it helps. thanks.
First thing is please edit that pic . So you Tap Always and after a Reboot it just asks again ? Has it always been that way ? You mentioned it was only on certain Launchers. Does it do the same thing on the TouchWiz Launcher ?

So it looks like he is experiencing the same thing as me. Yes, that is what happens. And even when I click "Always," it only sticks until the next reboot... and then it happens again. Yes, it has been like this ever since I bought the device (and even before rooting). Yes... it continues to be a problem even after factory resets / multiple wipes / all ROMS / full clears (including internal storage)... yes FULL wipes... before and after flashing new roms, stock roms, all of it. Sorry... but I am trying to be as clear as I can on this because it seems like people keep asking the same basic questions. No one seems to have a clue about this problem... it is nice to know though, that I am not alone with this problem.
So it looks like this problem even exists for other Galaxy products. I never realized this before but my GF has the Epic 4G Touch (galaxy s2) and it has the same issue. How is it that this isn't a big concern for people?

Because it sticks for everyone else. Like me.
So the other day i go put on a new rom and boot into TWRP to wipe and install. so i do my normal thing (wipe data/system/cache then install rom and gapps then wipe cache again. then reboot. i let it do its 10 min thing. then start to use the phone again. same problem as before (launcher constantly crashing) so i do my wipe and install again. this time i notice i have significantly less room on my data partition. so i go and do another wipe and install to check. this time even less space. i do it a couple more times to see if maybe it will fill up the space and then maybe completely wipe everything. no such luck. no my phone is basically useless with no way to install an OS or boot into the current one. any help on actually doing a real full wipe so that i have room again? i prepared to use odin or whatever i need to do to revert back to full stock then start all over again with the root process just to refresh my skills and get everything brand new again.
please any info would be great since id like to have a working phone again (pulled out the old iphone 4 in the mean time)
thanks guys!
Did you try a full system wipe using Infamous or Dark side to begin with? Try that first before doing anything else and see what happens.

TWRP has a Dalvik cache wipe which, IMO, is basically a factory reset. There may be more to it than I'm aware of. I'm not a dev, so I really can't say one way or another. Infamous and Darkside both have the full wipe which does everything. Anytime I flash a new ROM, I'll run Infamous followed by the TWRP wipe. Haven't had a problem, yet.
Glad it all worked out for you. I know what it's like to be in a situation like that. Been there, myself, a couple of times.
I searched for something like this, but couldnt find anything. Ive been flashing between different Roms since I got my phone, and wanted tosee if there was something that I could flash to wipe away all the gremlins from previous Roms. I still do a clean flash and wipe dalvik, cache, and factory reset. But ive been noticing little issues here and there.

Well There isn't one as such. Typically what I do is.
1. Factory Reset
2. Wipe Dalvik, Cache and sometimes /Data
3. Flash the Rom & Gapps.
4. Reboot Setup everything
5. Reboot Again to Recovery and then wipe Dalvik+Cache and then flash custom Kernel if I wanted.
I may skip Step 5 if I want to stick with Rom's own kernel. I know you went through this, I just wanted to specify the sequence. If you still have issues then post them on the new rom's thread.

Thanks. I know on the SGS Blaze 4G someone developed a gremlin cleaner that you could flash along with wiping everything manually. Just wondered if there was one for the S3. Im using Goosh rom, but it looks like the developer dropped support.

What little issues and on which ROMs? It matters.
Factory reset wipes data and cache. Dalvik cache is on the data partition, isn't it?
So factory reset, wipe system. Should be all you need to do.

Ive been reflashing Goosh rom, but after 2-3 months or so I have to reflash it because it slows down and starts to have issues. Havent installed or updated any apps. I dont have many and I know they can affect it. So thats when ive been doing. I really like the rom and get great battery life, but the dev has dropped support for it. Even to tell me to "use a different ROM" because he doesnt care. But each time I reflash it after a couple months, it doesnt seem to work as well as the very first flash from when I first got the phone. I feel like things are building up/not getting completely wiped.

Unless you're completely wiping everything, including internal sd, then there will of course be lingering data. But consider doing a true factory reset, which formats /data. From a custom recovery, it doesn't format because it's preserving your internal sd data. You'll have to specifically choose Format Data from within the recovery.
Something else you can try is in Settings, Developer Options, at the bottom choose Limit Background processes and I would select 3 to start. If it doesn't help much go to 2 and test.
