[Q] noobie wants to root hboot 0.98.0000 help - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Hello!
I bought a new htc incred 2 a while back then had issues with it and got this sent to me after i sent mine back for the warranty. I have always wanted to root my fone, but have been reluctant cause i don't want a brick. the straw that broke the camels back was my attempt at using GPS. I work as a conductor for a railroad in the rocky mountains delivering freight. I also bought a new ATV this fall and all of my riding is in the mountains. I WANT to use my GPS from my incred 2 and not purchase a garmin. I bought a larger battery so I could use my 2 for GPS! I have had terrible succes using GPS with the 2. After extensive reading on this sight about my GPS issues, it appears rooting my device enables me to use programs that enhance the GPS fixing that I desperately want. Hence my desire to root the incredible 2. My info is as follows:
***LOCKED***
VIVO_W XB Ship S-On RL
HBOOT-0.98.0000
RADIO-1.09.01.0312
eMMC-boot
Jul 18 2011, 12:39:36
Android Version: 2.3.4
HTC Sense: 2.1
Is there a method that is the least painful way for me to root? I noticed there is a pay for root sight advertised that if it is the least techy way for me to go, then i will. I have some tech experience with computers, installing hardware, OS's, etc...but limited knowledge with cells. I can learn the meanings of what I need to know to root my cell by googling anything i don't initially understand. So, i'm not afraid to try. What i would like is the easiest way to root though.
Thanks for help with this

It took 2 days for the devs to root the Thunderbolt, maybe less.

is this post development related at all? as in is this a rom/mod/kernel/think tank post? no
read through the other threads and posts before making another super awesome thread like this
jmaddox31,
1.) Your post doesn't belong here in the development section. It doesn't really belong anywhere on the site as it has no value.
2.) We're waiting for you to root the device and post procedures on how to do it. You aren't done yet? It only took 2 days for the Thunderbolt. You are pretty lazy for not having it rooted yet.
3.) We are not your trained monkeys and you are not paying anyone (I just checked my Paypal). So go back and quietly sit in the corner.
PS: Mr Clown, could you close & trash this thread, please?
this phone will most likely never be rooted... by software anyhow.. might have to return it for a tbolt.
Why wont it be rooted??

1) we had the thunderbolt for months before the release, we were familiar with it when it was released.
2) We perm rooted it on release day, s-off on day 2.
Thunderbolt was a similar situation, however because we were able to locate firmware vulnerable to scotty2's wpthis exploit, we we able to downgrade, then replace the bootloader.
We don't have this option on inc2, yet.
I have a inc2 eng hboot, and once a way to write it is found, we will have s-off root.

Hey man appreciate all your doing and when root happens it will be awesome. But on a positive note this device has the best battery life since my og Droid. It kills my tbolt in the battery department. Again thanks man.

We just need the htc software ninjas to leak an older ruu that can be exploited.

I would be surprised if a signed ruu dating before ~jan 7 exists.
if raskal comes up with inc2 support i can S-OFF and jcase said he'd help from there getting and RUU and making a recovery.

So that basically means a different exploit must be found then. One that exploits the code that is actually loaded.

did you receive s58 file from xtc for inc2??
so what all else is needed?
im gonna try and pull some strings and do some digging to get whats remaining so we can ROOT the monster.

(Please sticky) There is currently no root method for 2.3 stock.

As the title states there is currently no way to root the OTA. I'll read the forums and delete this when there is. But this is to cut down on the # of threads asking about the same question.

All that does is get you S-OFF. Doesn't give you root. You still have to flash a ROM to get root.

But I read somewhere that root was possible on 2.3 stock!!!
So how far do you guys think we are away from stock GB root without the clip? I just got mine, and have a chance to get it refunded if I want to. It took so long to get here, I feel that S-OFF will be accomplished without it any day now. Opinions?

Alpharev and unrevoked are releasing something "revolutionary" tonight. Whether that be the root method or that they recently discovered what a vagina is we dont know. Just wait for that.

Just got done trying that, it's a no go.
I'm debating what to do as well. I just got the phone yesterday, and I don't know if I should get the xtc clip or what. I upgraded early so Verizon wouldn't let me get a 4G phone for some reason.

Any news on root for 2.3.4?

has anyone heard anything on root for the new OTA update? just curious, havnt seen any info mentioning anything. does alpharev have twitter or anything that they use to discuss current projects/status?
It is still very new, probably won't have root for this version for a few weeks. Of course, I could be wrong, I'm just taking a shot in the dark. For 2.3.3 it took a few months.
Just have some patience and it will be rootable before you know it.
Petes One Click?
Unfortunately the only way at this point to root 2.3.4 INC2's is using the XTC clip. I can't say for sure if they are even working on rooting 2.3.4 because who knows we may be upgraded to 3.0 and are waiting for that. but like I said the only thing I can say for sure is the XTC clip.

Going forward with ota s....get s off....wait for ruu from jcase or whoever or a rooted rom to upgrade
Taking the ota is pointless
Petes one click will not work. That is for motorolas

This isn't true. I just got my phone a few weeks ago and it came with 2.3.4
I followed the instructions here. This was my first smartphone/rooting experience. It went flawlessly. So if I can do it, you should be able to as well (assuming you are mildly tech oriented).
No clips needed, just need to downgrade hboot to .97
Good luck

Any progress on 2.3.4 Root update? Besides Clip?

The reason that i ask this question is that i bought my mother a droid incredible 2 as she needed a solid phone to use for her business and something for her emails, easy web access, amongst many other things business oriented that her LG flip phone couldnt do. The issue is i dont live anwhere near her so i cant do the only root methof that we currently have, bc im not there, and it would be overly dificult to remote in and explain to her and all that. My question is, is there going to be something as easy as unrevoked or revolutionary that will come out for this update? THat i can explain over the phone, not a problem. Dont flame me for asking, if you look at my stats ive been here for some time and dont need someone telling me to wait if im a noob, im not, i just dont have easy access to the phone. also, is there any easy way to to tether? without root? like changing something in the service menu? that is a fool proof tested way to work? sorry for all the questions, ive stopped coming here for a while bc f some dooche in the fascinate forums, that ended up in the thunderbolt forums, that then ended up in the bionic forums and i just got tired of him. Good to be back all, thanks in advance for any help

I've read through the forums and the answer seems to be, "Yes, you can now obtain root without the clip. But only if you're competent in Swahili, like everyone ought to be. Otherwise, you don't have any business asking questions about how to do it."

S-Off

I'm a little bit confused about S-Off. If I were to have S-Off would I not have to flash boot.img? What are the advantages of having S-Off?
Thank you
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
You would not have to flash boot.img and also could give yourself supercid so you can flash any ruu. There is a lot more it allows you to do but that is all the general user would use it for

get what i mean?
Ohh okay. That makes sense. Thank you both for the replies. To achieve S-Off is it a hardware or software modification?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
There are hardware and software ways, currently no way to get it altogether without the HTC DIAGS, javacard, and Y-cable. Basically no way for us end users.

how close is S-OFF
I'm considering going for HTCDev, until S-OFF comes, but I've read somewhere that the HOX should receive S-OFF pretty soon.
I hate these kind of words "pretty soon, normal, common... " its seems bla-bla to me.
so in your opinion, how close is S-OFF?
