Hello everyone,
I've had my GNex since last February and just today I noticed something odd with my screen. Anytime I bring up a grey sub-menu it seems that there is weird fragmentation or pixellation of the grey shading longitudinally through the menu on the right side. Please see attached screen shots for a better idea of what is going on. I realize that the issue is faint on these screen shots, but it is really very pronounced on the actual screen itself. I'm concerned that my screen is dying and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I still have warranty for a couple more months. Thanks!
If it is indeed a hardware problem, it will not be visible in screenshots. Only way for you to show it would be to take a picture with another camera.

Interesting. Because I can definitely see it in the screen shots since I know what I am looking for. I'll try to post more shots with a circle around the region I am talking about.
If you can see it in screenshots it's a software problem. If you can see it on your phone's screen but not in the screenshots then it's a hardware problem. take a picture of the screen so we know what to look for too.
I mean, I do see oddities, but they look a kinda like compression artifacts
Edit: Hmm, I do see a strange horizontal line in the second picture..
This is an issue with 4.2. I believe it is documented as well, but since I'm mobile I can't get the link. Its just a software glitch and nothing to be overly concerned about
Oh I see. Okay thanks everyone.

I noticed as soon as I turned my Nexus on today that there was a line across the screen that looked like dirt under the display.
It is only noticeable on low brightness but the auto brightness set the phone to minimum when I turned it on so I saw it. I can only also see it on bright backgrounds like the forum - it is not visible on dark backgrounds or the home screens.
Does anyone else have this issue? I will return it soon and get it replaced but I am wondering if this is widespread or I was just unlucky.
Try turning the brightness right down and looking at this page and see if you see any lines/marks under the glass.
I have a line as well but it's quite small so I'm not really bothered.

Few very feint lines here too. Setting phone to fixed second lowest brightness setting and they vanish though.
This issue is on the gs2's too.
if you go to every forum of a phone that launches you will see the same complaint. its a plague

I can also see two faint grey vertical lines on either side of the screen if I have a light (white) background and brightness settings 1-3!
I haven't come across any other issues, I only noticed it after reading this thread and now its in bugging me. But I love the handset.. better than I expected!
Are these lines normal or do I have a duff handset? I have a couple of weeks to change it if necessary but I am also aware of the stock availability due to high demand.
Anyone else in same situation (O2 UK handset)?
I have the same issue on the lowest brightness, but not on the highest. It is also very faintly noticeable on my SGS2 on the lowest brightness. On my Omnia 7 (samoled) it is also very visible on low brightness, I think it is an amoled thing.

Exactly even the iphones with it's tinting issues SGS2 with it's Blotches in the dark
and the glass isn't perfect around the bezel
people just look for this stuff
I don't understood if this lines means defective screen or if all phones will have this lines.
I have the same thing on my Galaxy Nexus. I guess it's just a thing with Super Amoled screens, rather than a defect.

+1 Just as I said in my post above I have 4 amoled screen devices and they all it to some effect. Do not worry, your phone is fine.
could someone please post a picture so i can see what you guys are talking about? i'm curious to see what it looks like since i don't notice this on the samoled screen on my nexus s.
I had that issue with 2 evo screens. I would also get dead pixels or blotches.. Just have to get lucky with one I guess.

why is fine if it seems to have a problem?
do you think that it is normal to have lines on the screen?
can you tell for sure that every phone have that lines?
I have the same thing on minimum brightness. Its best seen by using a white image as wallpaper and having nothing on your far left and far right home screens. I have many vertical lines. When I scroll the home screen all the way over to the left until I see the blue gradient appear, the gradient varies in shades exactly where the lines are.
I noticed it as soon as i first powered on the device, same as the OP, as it was set to minimum brightness but I dont generally notice it any other time. I dont recall having the same problem with my galaxy S2
I got this phone last week and love it.
Anyway, I noticed that when I go to camera viewer in the dark or view a black image I get a gradient white to transparent line from the top of the screen all the way across. Is it normal or Am I the only one who has this problem?
See the attachment, so you can see the problem what I am talking about. See the mark on those pics.
Should I return it??
Thanks!
Yes, I get exactly the same thing. Only noticeable when the image at that end of the screen is completely dark.
It doesn't show in the actual photo.
I wouldn't return it as it doesn't affect the result and it seems to be only one pixel wide.

Darn near $800 phone... If I order it and don't have absolute perfection, it's getting returned.

I am glad to know that I am not only one here. However, I like to know how many people here have this 'not-really-problem'.
Anyone, does your nexus have a similar issue to mine? If so, please post here (just say "yeah, I have that, no big deal" or whatever)
Mine has it as well, and it appears to me to be the same color gray as the background for the camera UI, and this is just the edge of the "view finder," I am guessing that the coder for the camera miscalculated where the screen edge would be...
Bump
Please vote in the poll.
Thanks!
I just received my Galaxy Nexus, and the first thing that I noticed is that when opening pages with a lot of white, eg. Google, the screen seems to be all blurry, and makes the page almost look like paper (the best way I can describe it)
I was just wondering if this is common, or if I just have a faulty screen I should send back?
Do you mean faint vertical grey-ish lines all on the screen? I have that on low brightness, too. When I turn the brightness up, they go away (or are at least unnoticeable). But if it's lower than about 1/3 the way up, I can see the lines pretty clearly on whites and other light colors. They look pretty consistent and like there are dozens of them across the screen.
I was also wondering if this is hardware or software related. I just got the device two days ago and would rather not start out with a faulty one...
common characteristic for amoled displays. sent you both pms.
Hi i dont understand, please advice ihave same problem with the screen

this is XDA,not a selling, barbing, bidding community on this part of the forum.
if you got something related to the problem to share in those pm's.than share it here and dont be so egoistic.
share it with us.
or go away with your advertisement PM's.
and yes im accusing you, that for not knowing what's in those PM's.
if you really have helpful info, share it in a post, not a PM, doesn't matter if its a URL/link to a other site or thread.
Hi guys,
Sorry to post another thread about the screen but im not too sure if this has been covered under "banding"
The screen doesnt have any majour issue as sorts but i was wondering if what ive noticed is "normal"
if the screen brightness is quite low you can like speckles all over the screen as if the screen is like a piece of paper... It has that kind of grain effect to everything.
Its really hard to describe and i cant get it to show on a photo.
From what ive read banding is lines through the screen? this isnt the problem im having.
I hope someone know what im talking about
There is a sticky at the top of q&a section with loads of example pictures of screens and banding etc. Give a browse through it.
I have that graining too but only at like less than 10% brightness

Ah damn. i never bothered to look in that sticky that is exactly what im talking about.
Thanks very helpful.
It looks like my display falls within the "normal" range, although its still a little annoying.
Ill have to try and forget that its there.
Thanks for the help.
Just been on the xda app and I'm also now noticing that on the right hand side of the screen as I look at it has a slightly pink tint to it aswel... jesus

At low brightness the screens have a few flaws. Just keep brightness above 10% and they shouldn't bother you too much.
I've had mine at 100% brightness all day and it may be placebo effect but at 0% it seems to be better!
But it probably is my imagination.
Some people are saying that my purple screen issues documented here:

So I am on my second Galaxy Nexus, and I'm on my way to a third tomorrow.
My first one was absolutely awful, with blacks looking bright purple (Phone 1: http://i.imgur.com/2bjUZ.jpg ) and now OTHER elements looking purple (Phone 2: http://i.imgur.com/1EI0V.jpg ). That's not all. My first one was somewhat free of screen banding, but this one is riddled with it in every menu: http://i.imgur.com/j2oxB.jpg
How common are these issues? I'm getting kinda fed up here.

Are nothing more than standard AMOLED behaviour. They are saying that terrible colors like I am experiencing are normal if the phone is dim.
Is this true? Does anyone have ANY color issues at ANY brightness?
Well... I don't have ANY issues at ANY brightness fyi.

Good to know there are some phones out there that look great all the time
I'm not leaving the store tomorrow until I am certain the screen is perfect!
When you look at the phone in the store tomorrow, and you go to settings, don't get scared away by what appears to be "banding" in the background image. It' just a poor quality image google has chosen to use as the background. See?

Wow, why the hell would they use that AWFUL image?
Tomorrow I'll mostly just be looking for purple colors on low brightness.
EDIT: Here's a new picture showing that the screen is still purple http://i.imgur.com/uaRwP.jpg
Wauw that looks bad. I'm currently struggling with a grainy (gray) screen, but looking at other nexuses that seems normal. On light i can however see darker spots and lines on black screens (including boots and black images) but seeing other topics crawled with the same issue I don't put much trust in a device without it...

Oddly enough, neither of my Nexus' have had the grainy screen problem, just this discoloration
I received my 2nd Nexus today after the firsts' volume buttons stopped working. The new one has purple where black used to be, like yours, but doesn't make the experience any worse. However, when I pull the notifications area down on low brightness, the screen dims further - does this happen on yours? It's quite annoying...
Mine is okay. Not perfect but okay. There is still a little bit of purple (not that extreme like uours) but after a few days you barely notice it

on low brightness the notification tray is almost an opaque black
Same here but top bar gets even darker when notifications area is pulled down, even when brightness is set to 0. Whites are a LOT better tho.
Edit: just noticed that when taking photos, the brightness of whats being photographed affects the screens brightness. Also, top half of pages on tapatalk are a lot brighter than the bottom halves, it's strange and quite annoying once you notice it...
