[Q] New tethering block on JB? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello everyone,
I know of the other tethering thread but they all seem to address the older ICS version of software.
I have the truly unlimited plan and was able to tether with the custom apn before (unrooted btw)
I have since applied the new JB upgrade to the device and it seems when I go to enable the tethering it checks with tmobile first before enabling.
Any ideas on different programs or way to block it from doing that?

[Q] Thether without root

I know is a redundant question but I updated the ota and can't root is any way I can therther without needing the root phone and sprint hotspot service?
currently there is not a way to wirelessly tether with out sprint hotspot un rooted. I believe someone said pdanet still works to usb tether 3g but i have not tried it myself.

Enable sprint hotspot??

Isn't there a mod by calkulin or something to enable hotspot on any rom?
If you are rooted and on the sprint rom, just use Wireless Tether app. If you are on any other rom, the sprint hotspot should already be unlocked.
New EvoKing 2.3 rom does not have it unlocked, hence this thread. I am currently using wireless tether.
calks tweaks likely wont work with 2.3.3
What I was thinking...I found the calk USB fix and it says 2.2 only.

Stock Gingerbread question

My GF has a G2 with stock gingerbread now running on it from the OTA. She wants wireless tether. Are these my only two options?
0- Pay for the tether add-on service.
1- Downgrade to Froyo and then flash a rooted GB ROM ?
2- Downgrade to Froyo and then flash a custom GB ROM such as CM7 ?

Pretty much your only options are to pay for an app or flash a ROM where that feature is included however, from what I've read, people have been getting billed for the feature when using the app, at least on TMo

Well the tethering feature is actually unlocked on the G2 (it comes preloaded on AOSP Android), but if you use any decent amount of data on the phone or computer, they'll start pressuring you to buy a tethering plan (even though they never actually block tethering). I personally tethered on several ROMs, stock rooted included, for several months before ever having issues.
Flashing a custom ROM or pre-rooted OTA-based ROM won't necessarily save you from the tethering problems. As I've sleuthed through and found out through the course of this thread, they can sniff out the user agents you're using on your computer even on custom ROMs and redirect your websites (this is easily fixable (read the thread) but nonetheless they are paying attn).
Either way, you shouldn't be paying for tethering. If you have no problems being able to root, then you should and put a custom ROM on there for more functionality (including WiFi tether) in general.

Thanks. That's what I noticed. She has working tethering via the AOSP stock ROM. So I'll just leave things along and once they start pressuring her to buy a tethering plan I'll consider flashing a custom ROM. As a side note, I've been tethering (via AOSP stock ROM and custom ROMs) on my Nexus devices for years now and T-Mobile hasn't said a word. Maybe 'cuz I'm not a heavy user.

Yep pretty much. As soon as you start using a lot of data they start looking and they'll check user agents and can block it. They don't try very hard though.

Free tethering on stock rooted rom

Could I get that? I'd really want to use built in feature, not 3rd party app.
It shows "mobile data isn't available or invalid sim" when I try to turn it on

Hi, I have the same problem, anybody has the solution for that?
Did it work before you rooted?
The Rogers ROM has unlocked tethering but I'm not sure if you can use it with your provider without getting in trouble.
Rogers ROM has tethering enabled, but I believe, a Rogers customer needs a data plan of at least 1GB to be able to use it.
if you are rooted and unsure if your tethering is enabled, view /system/build.prop and look for the line
Code:
ro.tether.denied
false means tethering is enabled, and vice versa
not sure for ATT Glides but you may have this too
Code:
ro.wifi.hotspotUI
0 means disabled and vice versa
Reboot if you did enable (change) those build.prop lines
I have the AT&T stock ROM rooted and it happens the same to me i look in the system folder and I find that in the AT&T ROM it said
ro.tether.denied=false
What these mean? How i can fix these?
I posted how to do this. Here's the thread I think.

Basically if you are already rooted use titanium to remove the tethering manager package.

moto z2 force, bootloader unlocked, stock T-mobile 8.0 not rooted question

As the title says, phone is not rooted yet. I'm on cricket running stock 8.0 trying to tether and hot spot but tells me i'm not setup for it and to contact the carrier. I was wondering how I can get around this?? If I root using Magisk would I then be able to tether??
Possibly,
If you are running the stock rom then the baked in tethering option will not likely work even with root access. If you root your phone however there are multiple tethering apps that you can get from the play store that will allow you to tether such as wifi tether router.
Hope this helps please hit the thanks button
