I would like to get back my NFC capabilities but dont want to flash a custom rom to my phone. (used MIUI on last phone) mainly due to the fact that I would like to keep it as stock as possible and be able to use NFC for google wallet and have working GPS.
Is there any way to just re-enable the NFC?
Look at tw roms they are close to stock and nfc should work with them
Maybe I'm being a Super Noob, but why doesn't NFC (or GPS ?) work ? What happened ?
For the T-Mobile GS3 Touchwiz-based ROMs (this would include stock rooted) you have to do a work-around hack to be able to use Google Wallet and will not be able to be used otherwise and you have to use Modoco's modified Wallet apk in order to be able to use your original build.prop values where they are concerned.

Hi,
I have rooted and flashed numerous ROMs on several phones that I've had over the past few years, and installed minimal GAPPs such as BanKs, but this is a bit different.
I have just bought an S4 mini for my daughter, I have the intention of locking it down in many ways, but one thing i would like to do is remove gmail (and possibly other apps). I know there would be the option of not setting up a google account, but i don't want to do this as i want her to have access to google play music.
So my question is, can this be done on the stock ROM (with root), or a ROM that is based on stock so that she can keep all the fancy samsung widgets and things? And if so would the ROM be safe/stable, or would i need to do this on a more vanilla ROM such as CM or AOSP?
Thanks.

You can easily disable app in the application manager without rooting the phone. This will allow you to remove contact sync calendar sync gmail sync and all the other bloatware that cames with google account. But it's only disable and can be reanable eaysily

After rooting you could uninstall or freeze (=disable) nearly everything with Titanium Backup.
For a list which apps can be uninstalled without losing important functions, see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39395506&postcount=604
You'll have to lower your sights, though, if your daughter wants to use some of the "bloatfeatures"...
But still, a rooted stock ROM should be sufficient.
I've got a bit of a question about CM-based ROM's and NFC that I can't seem to find an answer to: Do the CM-based ROMs have the ability to use tap-and-pay NFC apps? I've tried installing from the play store but instead get a 'your device is not compatible with this app'. Similarly, if I restore from a backup made in a Sense ROM, the app won't run.
Is this just an issue with the ROM - it just doesn't have that capability - or is there some way to patch around this issue. This has me stumped - any help would be appreciated.
Is it possible to have app stock like
\system\priv-app\SamsungCamera3.apk or VoiceNote4T.apk in CM13 or 14.x ??

Only if they are not dependent upon the touchwiz framework. For example samsungs internet browser can be installed on any device (example of non touchwiz dependent app) where as gear vr only works on samsung roms (touchwiz dependency) . It wont hurt to try you will just get non functional app or fc. NOTE!!!! I STTONGLY SUGGEST NOT FLASHING ANYTHING ANDROID IS DEPENDENT UPON FOR BOOT OR TOUCHSCREEN FUNCTIONALITY (SYSTEM UI, documents ui....leave anything with ui in package name alone. A phone without the ability to be interacted with would seriously suck. Obviously backup before trying system apps ....the camera isnt going to work ....im doubting voice note will either, but i havent tried either (the cam im certain wont work we have been looking for a working one since march)
I have an old T-Mo S4 on 4.something and would like to play with some custom ROMs. I see that there are several ROMs but am not sure which one to start on.
What's the cleanest, most compatible, stock-like ROM for the S4? Preferably Android 7.x or newer.
Additionally, is there a simple way of reverting back to an official T-Mobile ROM?
I went with lineage, used it for a couple of phones. It's currently in active development, root is optional so I think safetynet is not an issue. I think a couple of other ROMs are based on lineage, so I just stick with them.
As for reverting back I don't know. I had to download stock for an old phone and flash back, this time I tried backing up stock, but didn't back up stock recovery, didn't think of it and not sure if I can. I don't know if my backup of stock will work if I try to flash back. Still pretty new to all of this, or maybe not new so much as I'm not a developer and I'm trying to follow as best I can.

I flashed AlaskaLinuxUser's [ROM][7.1.1] SlimRoms N [jfltetmo] build on my bone-stock SGH-M919 a week ago. It's my daily driver, so I'm glad the 7.1.1 Slimroms ROM has proven to be lean and stable.
It carries the same SGH-M919 model number so IR blaster apps are available.
It is not rooted, so corporate sector apps don't have a cow over security.
It is easily rooted using the recover-flashable SuperSU zip, and easily unrooted inside the SuperSU app.
Portable Hotspot works well, although only in the 2.4GHz band.
Media players are absent (slim indeed), so I had to download AOSP Music+ etc.
Wi-Fi Calling does not work :crying: due to not having T-Mo's proprietary app.
TWRP can backup and restore the whole phone using an SD card. You'll need around 7GB free on the card.

Have you attempted to manually get Wi-Fi Calling working? There are plenty of stock devices - the Moto G6 for example - where Wi-Fi Calling works.
I'm getting lost in a lot of the information in here.
I'm fed up with lousy performance and charging my phone 2-3 times per day. I've read a few posts online about how the Exynos version is to blame (lucky me, that's the one I have), and that there are some minor tweaks I can do to both improve the performance and battery life.
However, I am dependent on VoLTE and being able to mask root access (actually, I don't really need root access, I just want to change the CPU settings, which I assume requires root access).
From what I've read none of the AOSP ROMs supports VoLTE, and the Lineage crew says it's impossible for them to support it, while other ROMs says that "everything works" which I would think includes VoLTE.
So to the point. I need to keep VoLTE, and I need to be able to mask root. Is it possible to retain those while:
1) Being able to mod CPU settings
2) Being able to uninstall Samsung (cr)apps
3) Getting a clean android experience without any Samsung customization
Device: SM-G960F
Many thanks.
Im on Soliders ROM, very very good ROM.
I have WiFi calling working, but I have to contact my provider and ask for the config file to be OTA sent to me (only if I full wipe on setup)
I have VoLTE, but it doenst work or activate. Not sure its every worked.

Awesome, but now I have a new question. What does bri4 mean? I see BRI1, BRI3 and BRI4 for some ROMs, does that have something to do with which version of the device I have?
BRI4, its just the latest release basically.
Can check in settings>about>software to see your version and work from there
