I read that the boot loader on the G had been unlocked recently--the FreeGee project, I believe it was called. If that's the case, can we expect to see custom ROM support? I'm thinking, specifically, Cyanogenmod?
Basically, I bought an Optimus G for my wife last night not realizing there was no Google Wallet support, and that ticks me off to no end. Now I want to fix it.

*apologies for any obvious information I may have missed*
I have a Moto Z Play that has a locked bootloader. I've searched through a lot of these forums, went to other sites, and I've still not found the information I probably should have by now. I want to put the Resurrection Remix Rom on my phone, but I'm confused on a few different points. The phone was given to me and it looks like it was Verizon before I got it, and I use Straight talk as a carrier. I've seen the unlock process on Motorola's page, and it says my bootloader is not eligible for unlock. With the capabilities of a lot of these developers, I find it hard to believe this means the end of the road. My question is whether I can wipe the phone and somehow unlock the bootloader? Is there anyway I can speak to verizon to give me something to get an unlock code from Motorola? Can I put Resurrection on my phone without the bootloader being unlocked? Again, i've been reading and trying to figure this out on my own without having to make a thread, so sorry if this wastes anybody's time, but I could really use some help.
Thank you very much in advance.
If your phone is contracted with Verizon .... They they will not allow you to unlock the bootloader
To install custom ROM , you must have custom recovery ( may be twrp)
To be able to install custom recovery, you must unlock your boot loader
So both is not possible right now if your phone is from Verizon
So you can not install custom ROMs
Keep eyes on the MZP thread for solutions
Hope this helps
I have been trying for over a year to unlock, root, TWRP, custom ROM on my Motorola Moto Z Play that is Bootloader Locked to Verizon. I am SO sick of all these newer phones that are completely useless and fully locked down. It's been that way for about four years now.
I have successfully installed ADB on my computer, I've been able to communicate with my phone successfully, I've even installed an updated TWRP recovery from somewhere on the forums here, for this particular model. I'm not able to boot into that version of TWRP, it's simply won't do it.
And even then, there's nothing I can do with the phone. It's not eligible by Motorola to be unlocked. I'm about ready to toss this phone in the trash and go with a Moto Droid Razr. At least the older phones were customizable.
I will pay someone who can actually get this model rooted and with a custom ROM.
you can't unlock , if moto give unlock key then u can play around
1. Is there a method to root g8 thinq???
As far as im tracking right now there is no TWRP recovery image of the LG G8 ThinQ. I read This Post, and This Post, but didn't test it yet. If anyone rooted it, please let me know.
I have AT&T model. It has the option to enable OEM unlock. The phone is network locked to AT&T.
2. Also, are there any firmware available (e.g., clean one without bloatware)?
I have found This One but skeptical to actually try it out.
Despite the fact that Enable OEM Unlock is an option in Developer Options, when I try to boot into the bootloader, it is unsuccessful. Apparently LG has blocked access to the bootloader on this, as well as other phones.
For the record, I'm on AT&T as well.
Thats kinda lame. I thought that LG wont have same practice with keeping their phones locked as Samsung... Anyway, THIS POST shows supported devices to get to bootloader for LG. Looks like wont have any root any time soon.
What about that firmware without bloatware. Looks like it doesnt require the bootloader?
Hello, can you unlock the bootloader of the LG G8 ThinQ ANDROID 11 AT&T

Hello
I was wondering if LG allows you to unlock bootloader, install custom ROM on the G8S?
I have owned a G6 from a few years ago and remember they allowed bootloader unlock on certain variants of the G6 but for some reason not on another.
Thank you.
No is not possible yet and if LG unlocks the bootloader nobody knows.
I'm thinking if I should sell mine again at christmas without free bootloader it makes no sense the mobile phone
So just as a background, I used to be into the root/rom scene with my old Samsung Charge and then My Motorola Razr MAXX Smartphone circa 2013-ish. As Verizon locked down I stepped away but I found something interesting the other day. I just upgraded to the Edge+ and was playing around with my Moto Z2 Force Edition. Im taking it with me to spain to get a local sim inserted and be a local number while I am there for a few months. I did a factory reset and let it update to Android 9 and then hit the build number 7 times to enable developer options and found an option called "OEM Unlocking" with a description of "Allow the bootloader to be unlocked".
Perhaps with the age of the phone, Motorola has lifted its lock of the bootloader to be able to be rooted? or is this just wishful thinking. Now that it is an alternate phone I would love a chance to get back in to the scene, root it with a recovery and throw the latest Lineage on it or whatever is available. with the ability to unlock the bootloader, might a TWRP recovery work now?

All Moto devices with Android 5? have this option it doesn't necessarily mean it can be unlocked.
Most Moto devices that are not carrier-branded can now be unlocked.
but the only real way to know is to try the moto unlock site.

If the bootloader is unlocked you can flash custom recoveries, roms, and kernels.
