I got the Nexus from Bell Canada and I noticed that I have something called SIM toolkit in the app drawer. I clicked on it and it loaded but it didn't do anything. What is it and what does it do? Is it a bloatware?
In Europe is STK often used as an authentication channel for internet banking
or if your provider sim has built-in functionnality ,like shortcuts ...or services
So no way to get rid of it?

Or freeze it in Titanium Backup or uninstall it.
Ya, I was just wondering if it's some bloatware that was installed by my carrier.

No, it's the equivalent of the SIM menu that exists on just about any GSM standards-compliant phone if the carrier chooses to present a SIM menu. Remember that the SIM is actually a small computer chip that runs authentication algorithms and other simple programs. STK just queries the SIM to ask if it has a SIM menu, and if so it presents it to you. On Bell it doesn't do much - just lets you visit the account self-serve web portal and dial common customer service numbers. On WIND you can use it to request an SMS with your account balance and usage details, and also under certain circumstances to force it to look for roaming networks.
I think it's also responsible for pop-up messages that come from the SIM - for example on AT&T GoPhone, you get a pop-up every time you do something that decrements your balance, so that you know how much it cost you.
Short version - it doesn't do much, and it does absolutely nothing when you aren't running it. Leave it on, because every once in a while it's useful.
For me stk menu is important , i use an dual simcard adapter in my nexus
But in most custom rom it didn't appear ...
I've deleted it in every ROM for the last couple of years with no side-effects. (T-Mobile UK).

There is truly no advantage in doing so... it consumes no resources, and on the rare occasions you might need it again, getting it back is a pain.
If you are using a SIM that does not have any SIM menu programmed into it, the icon will vanish automatically. For example my LG Optimus One shows the STK with a Bell SIM but it vanishes with a Fido SIM.

it's a simore platinum adapter

but it's impossible to use 2 sim at same time, but i can program it to switch automatically (1 hour on sim 1 ,10 minutes on sim 2 )

aw! Thanks for the info!!
I just play with my S3 I747 and find out how to temporaly remove RAT restriction.
Click phone then punch code : *#197328640# ->Umts->Debag Screen->Phone Control->Network Lock->Rat_Free_Supporting ON
After you click this you see " Now RAT Free Supporting". Click back button and try setting radio by pressing *#2263#.
RTA will lock back after restarting.
could you explain what "RAT restriction" is and what removing it will provide?

Here is a thread that talks about RAT restrictions. It appears to have to do with restricting access to certain bands, but I am swimming in waters that are deeper than my skills will allow.

I gonna do a run for this later today to see if it will actually work for allowing band selection and sticking.
It seemed to work for me, but it's only been a couple of minutes so far after turning off LTE. BTW, the first menu is "UMTS", not "Units".

Any suggestions on how to make these changes permanent without rooting?
Since there is now a known code to lift restrictions until reboot, I hope some dev will figure out a way on stock based roms (both stock and mods), as well as AOSP based, to make it permanent. I have tried AOKP and CM10 in hopes the LTE and 2G toggles would work but no dice with AT&T SGS3.

Given the issue at hand, it is most likely a deeply embedded setting that will not be available to standard user base (non rooted), henceforth root access or even on a programming level will be needed to make the necessary changes. How the changes will be made available, if it is done, will depend on what was needed to make it permanent. This raises the question of where is this restriction coded into the AT&T SGS3. Is it firmware, ROM, SIM related, Radio? Seriously doubt it is hardware itself since there are ways to get around the restriction.

Testing this method now. So far I am running on 2G. I will give it at least a couple of hours and will update this post accordingly.
Update: I was messing around and decided to save this USSD (the official name of these secret dialer codes) in my contacts. From dialer you can start pressing *#1 and when it appears just press it. This gives quick access should you need to change radios often. I also want to add that instead of going back into *#2263# you can also select the band from *#197328640#. If you want to change it immediately, then once you get the confirmation "Now RAT Free Supporting" press the menu key on the left of the Home button. Select back and repeat again to go back again. Then, instead of choosing Network Lock choose Network Control-->Band Selection. This takes you to the same menu that *#2263# does and you can select accordingly.
@norbarb...perhaps you can update your OP to reflect that you can stay within the original selection instead of *#2263# and just go back twice to access the band selection. It is just one more way of doing things.
I also did the test of rebooting my phone. As mentioned by norbarb, if you have rebooted the RAT restriction is back in place. Regardless of which option you take to the band selection it will show RAT restriction until you follow the OPs steps again to remove restriction. Have not found a way for permanent removal of the restriction yet (I am optimistic and really want this permanent so I will look very hard to find a solution.). Also when I rebooted I had GSM 2G only selected prior and I kept the option upon reboot so only the RAT restriction is reset...not the network band settings.
Update 2: After 4 hours I am still on 2G Edge. I am in a very good LTE location so this is definitely the most promising outlook. I have found that I despite my love for the look of AOSP roms, the inability to turn on 2G at all will keep me with TW for now. Thankfully I do not mind the look of TW and with root, I can kill the Bloatware. I will look at all of the options in the *#197328640# menus and see if there is anything that may can be applied for permanent access. I also wonder if the secret to overriding the lack of options for network choices in *#*#4636#*#* will be here as well as this would more preferable to shut down LTE only.

Isn't the problem with doing this, say if you disable LTE and only select HSPA, it wont go to any 2G networks if you are out of coverage. Because its not on 'automatic', its on HSPA. So if you are out of a service zone of HSPA, then you dont have anything to fall back to.
If only there was a way to disable LTE, and use the other networks 'automatically'.

That is the problem. However, AT&T in their infinite focus on trying to force users to their networks of choice has purposely had the ability to do network selections disabled. Under normal circumstances in android devices the option of network selection is under settings and mobile networks option. This is removed I am sure at AT&T's request. The other way to access this is to use USSD *#*#4636#*#* in dialer and select "Device Information" which will give you an option to choose a network preference. While the USSD works the option to select network preference does not work.
At least with the option to unlock RAT and using USSD *#2263#, it gives some sort of ability to choose a network. For me this is perfect since I want the 2G only due to poor 3G and LTE signals at work. However you are right that it is not convenient if you just want LTE off. For the moment there is no known way to obtain this option on the AT&T SGS3.

Yep. I also think it's something to do with AT&T network setup. Because on AOSP ROM's we can't toggle LTE either. But the same ROM on a Canadian model phone will work just fine.
Even though the iphone has an LTE toggle. At least I read somewhere that it does.

It has nothing to do with the network setup...it is the carrier forcing restrictions on their customers. I have had three other android phones (including my wifes) in the last three years. All of them were restricted from choosing the network from stock rom. The moment I uploaded a ROM such as CM or other AOSP Roms I was magically able to do a network select. I even had to Windows phones (6.1 and 6.5) and both of them were stripped but with some registry edits I was able to add the option back to select between 3G/2G and 2g only. It is AT&T's way and they are notorious for it.
On a side note, I would not be surprised if AT&T is the primary corporate network that pushed for this network SIM lock ruling by the Congressional Librarian. Of all the carriers they have the most to lose.

I have been testing this for the last 4 hours and it does seem to work. Went to 2g only area and it switched perfectly to 2G and reverted back to 3g when I left the area. However I am not able to do GSM ONLY (2G only) using this method. You will have to follow the instructions on this thread for that.

It could result in battery savings and reduced dropped calls. For instance, I am often in and out of areas with little to no bandwidths under LTE. At default, my phone would always looking for an LTE signal which means my battery takes a pounding. By having my phone only look for 2G/3G, I do not take as large of a battery hit. Besides that, LTE does consume more power. For the most part I leave my phone with LTE off because the data speed is not crucial for me. At home I have a really fast WiFi network so it is better to be on it anyway while at home.

OK Thanks. But under Settings/More Networks/Mobile Networks/Network Mode there are 13 "band" combination choices. Do those choices not provide what you''re looking for (i.e.2G/3G)?
I've never changed mine, so I'm curious
Phone is an S3 for T mobile running 4.1.1
I've been in phone unlocking hell for 4 days.
Closely followed the "free" unlocking in debug mode method-trouble was phone will auto lock back after a couple hours or calls.
Tried turning the flag on and off, factory reset, all kinds of stuff and still no luck.
I broke down and bought an unlock code but can't get my phone to prompt for it.
I can't seem to undo the service mode change or find a way to enter the unlock code.
The phoen will not prompt me for an unlock code no matter which way I try to reset it.
Have you tried to odin to latest jb stock ?

yes, inserting non t mobile sim- it doens't prompt for unlock code
If I root and flash a different rom does does it bypass all hte lock/unlock BS or am I still going to have to figure out how to get that code entered
Also tried reinstalling drivers from kias- just rooted phone-it wouldn't be much trouble to install a different rom if that is the fix.
also I bought an unlock code but don't see a place to enter it in
Not 100% sure but I was under the impression the simlock feature was null on sgs3. I have no issues with mine using straight talk wireless full unlimited ($45 per mth). Aside from that, if you can give me some info on what you have done I might be able to help more. There are a few settings that need to be changed as well as phone based service menu changes.

ok
Inserted foreign (non t mobile sim)
Got a prompt for an unlock code, which I didn't have.
Used Google, found a way that looked promising by going in the service menu.
*#197328640#
Main Menu
[1] UMTS
[1] Debug Screen
[8] Phone Control
[6] Network Lock
Options [3]Perso SHA256 OFF
(after choosing this option, wait about 30 seconds, then go back one step by pressing the Menu button then select Back, now you are in
[6] Network Lock then choose
[4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ ..... wait for a minute then reboot your phone
Ok did that then phone worked. Kinda. It works for about an hour or a couple of phone calls, then the phone says "searching" and I don't have any network connection.
Also tryied turning the SHA256 back on, back off, intializing, every combination you can imagine, same result, phone doesn't work.
Bought an unlock code but can't get the pop up to come on to ask for it so I guess it is worthless.
Tried reinstalling firmwire via Kias. Same thing.
Rooted phone thinking that might be the answer. Worked for a day then same thing.
Spent countless hours on google and these forums trying to figure out a way to fix it.

Have you changed your service address? Sounds like your sgs3 isn't finding the correct path to your new network. ....
In your Phone: Go to settings<more settings<mobile networks- then touch the option network operators to scan the available networks in your area, wait for some moment, let your phone scan, a list of available networks in your area will appear then, select the network name of your service provider to register it and you are done. You can restart fore more efficient use then.
This is from another site, I have cm nightly so my options are a lil different now. That being said after manually selecting my network with stock rom, setting my APN/WAP had no issues. With the cm nightly I didn't have to change anything. I'm thinking one of the os updates might have made it hard to access or change this option. Will try to grab a dev friend to look into this for ya.

I selected 311040 and nothing....still got the "searching".
then selected "T-Mobile" and my phone connected to "cellular one".
please please please let this thing be fixed!
Ok we are getting somewhere.
Last night after I "registered" to T-mobile the phone did fine.
Today I stopped in at Cell one on the way home and told them I thought it was fixed and what I did.
She said that isn't good because I will get booted off when my bill comes because 50% of my useage has to be on cell one network.
So she scanned there at their store and set it to cell one.
I get back home and I'm booted off again. I tried to put it back on T mobile and I get an error now that says my Sim does not allow to register on this network.
Is there anyway to get ALL of T-Mobiles stuff off of this phone?
Would flashing a ROM do that?
So I was issued a warranty claim to return my Note 4 for a replacement due to not being able to make and receive phone calls and text messages.
The AT&T store has replaced the SIM card with NO fix to my problem so I was advised to get a replacement. My issue is that the device will be a refurbish and I don't like this option when I purchased a brand NEW one.
My question, is there an LTE on/off option somewhere? This morning I'm connecting to AT&T but it's Edge network only.
It'd be nice to solve this problem and keep my 'NEW' device instead of dealing with a refurb that may have unforeseen problems.
Is there an option in the *#0011# service menu?
Update after going into the *#0011# menu, I went into HW TEST MENU and chose Option 7 to 'NV REBUILD ALL'.
After reboot I seem to have full network functionality, even 4G LTE. So we'll see how long this lasts.
Goto Dialer then type *#*#4636#*#* then device info. Change lte/GSM to wcdma
The above update worked and has since choosing the option 'NV REBUILD ALL'.
So anyone who screws up their settings can always choose this to fix it.

I'm thinking if you add that number as a contact then you can add a quick dial shortcut to your home screen ☺
You may have to use another launcher as I'm unsure if TouchWiz has that feature.

I might just end up returning it. I was wondering if root is ever achieved on this phone would there be a way to then freely access the settings?
Bought 5 of these unlocked LG G8 phones for families in Laos and the update basically broke them. Now I can't get help from LG or Sprint. WTF...never again with both of these two companies. What a waste of my time and money, Grrrr.
I have the same problem. Can't edit the APN in Setting to get it to work. But when I go to ##data# and go to APN Setting and try to edit it demands my Service Code which I randomly entered 000000 and it opened for edit !! But most things are un-editable so that did not work for me. I.e I can edit user name, password, authentication, APN NI and PDN Type but I can't edit the APN to change it to my carriers "#777". Any ideas?
P.S. My device is actually sprint locked, but I'm using an unlocking electronic chip to make it work on my carrier
Update
This was brought up on the Sprint forum and a representative states, "We are only responsible for unlocking the device, not getting the APNs to unlock. You can contact the carrier you are trying to activate the device on or contact LG" as shown here. There was another post on the LG forum where an LG representative says to contact Sprint or the other carrier because the problem can only be resolved by the carrier here.
So currently Sprint and LG are passing the blame onto each other. This is sad to hear because this is the only disappointment I have in my purchase so far. Maybe if more of us comment on the issue to both companies we can find out which one is really at fault and get them to issue a fix?
I have the unlocked Sprint variant of this phone on ATT and my APN settings are also locked. My APN settings got messed up after this last update and once during a factory default. I fixed the APN settings for ATT doing the below steps.
Do the ##data# code

Then on the top right corner of the screen hit the three little dots
Then hit reset to defaults
Next restart the phone
After that mobile data and mms started working. Hope this helps.

check the sprint community forum, there is a moderator that can help you get your service code, once you have this, you can make changes to your apn (I don't think you can add a new APN though) The update screwed up this apn badly, sadly lg and sprint are just passing the blame around

I got in contact with him through pm. Sadly he said the method he previously suggested didn't work.

I don't think they would provide service code for locked phones!

The phones are unlocked, even with service code, you can't add a new apn, you can only edit some parts of the existing ones.
So.. is there a chance in the near future or what?!

Not really. But resetting to default should help in most cases
FIX
So I continued searching and there is an adb fix that forces the "Add APN" activity. Enable ADB debugging and then type
Code:
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1
This was discovered by xda member deskjet390 here. I used an app that a member named miji2 on another forum created that does this on device here. I also think I should link the website that I found all this information on as they're the reason for all of this so here.
