Hi peeps, after a couple of days trying to get a custom ROM going i finaly cracked it.Worked round the partition problem and got Mix HD ROM running. It starts up just fine but restarts after 4 or 5 mins and keeps looping.I cleared storage in recovery and formated the SD from clockwork mod.And all goes according to plan then random reboots.Any help as to why this is happening?.Bit of a noob so be gentle with me lol.
You should post this question in the according threat.
I had the same problem but after some searching I found out the problem likely lies at the kernel.
so try flashing the older b33 kernel (link in first post of the rom)

thanx for the speedy reply, sorry about the post position.Got the kernel how is it flashed?.Through recovery like the ROM or is it done differently?.
same way like a rom.
So copy it to the root of the card and flash from recovery or clockwork mod?.Dont remember seeing anything in either about kernels?.Sorry for sounding desperate but i'm so close lol.
Just go to clockwork recovery and choose flash zip from SD and then navigate to the kernel zip file. If you got a error like me that the zip isn't signed just disable the sign verification and try again

Hi back again, just to say thanks to all that helped me on the road to rooted goodness lol.Flashing the kernel seems to have cured the boot loop problem. Now im off to see how i can add little extras to make my device my own.Cheers
Sorry back again just plugged my phone into my PC and it said i needed to format the drive (SD card i take it) so i did as there was nothing on it anyway but now when i plug it in it can see it but only lists it as 999MB, just so happens o be the same size as the partition i made with liveCD.Any ideas whats going on there or have i limited the size of my card by mistake?.How would i put that right?.Without wrecking my newly ROMed phone. The phone however still sees 6.68 GB.
How big did you made your ext3 partition? Did you do it with gparted? If so use gparted to check if the partitions on your SD are right (500/1000 mb ext3 partition and the rest fat32)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Well thats what LiveCD says i've got but when i plug it into windows it just wants to format the 1GB, surely it should want to do that with whats left at FAT32 right. The extension will format in recovery but the SD card wont. Doin my head in
Where did you create the ext partition on the disk?
If you created the ext partition before the fat32 partition windows wont recognize the disk and hence will want to format it to fat(default).
YO!!
First off I want to say this site is dope and tons of help to match.
This has most likely been asked before, but..uh I dont see/get it.
I have been trying to create partition ext3-ext4 on my sd with absolutly no luck.
I've been readin this for days now and never seem to find a definitive answer.
Everyone says that while in recovery you have option to partion ext3-ext4, but I guess my phone is retarded for some reason. While in recovery(any version and its clockwork btw) if i go to partition sd, once in that menu it brings up 5 different sizes. I check the last one and then the second step is to pick the swap. After I check what I want for the swap it starts the partition. Nowhere in the recovery menus(anywhere) do i see any options for ext2-4(ext2, ext3, etc etc).
So my question is: If it's not there where do I find it or is there any other option and is it really worth it?
I know how to gpart (or whatever you call it) but not sure how to allocate the sizes. 32GB sd class4
I've finally figured out adb and flashed several times. Call me blind, call me crazy, call me stupid...just don't call me coffee.
any help would be great.
T-Mo G2 is the device.
ps. I guess I'll get this out of the way so i don't have to keep posting dumb questions. I notice when flashing roms and it goes to mount the sd-ext(might have that spelled wrong sorry) I always get an error saying unable to load dev/block/mmcblk1 not formating. Nothing happens and the roms still flash just fine(usually). I saw this question before but everything I read that was supposed to be a"fix" didn't work. I am assuming I'm getting this because my sd isn't properly partitioned. any help on this would swell as well
oh yeah and it's ENG S-Off and all that other jazz. Used the gfree/rage method
cheers
Theres an option in ROM Manager to partition your sdcard for you but I have never had any luck getting it to work.
Heres A LINK that will walk you thru partitioning your sdcard thru ADB, it works, I used it to partition my sdcard, Just remember the sdcard for the HTC VISION is at dev/block/mmcblk1, the instructions will tell you to partition dev/block/mmcblk0, but this is for a diffrent phone. You want to partition dev/block/mmcblk1.
WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO PARTITION dev/block/mmcblk0
thanks for the reply. I learned that last night, lol thats the one I learned from last night. Problem is I need some input on how much to allocate for each partition. 32GB card.
cheers
Are you trying to partition your sdcard for use with apps2ext? If so since you have such a high capacitiy sdcard I would partition it to 1024mb ext2, 32mb linux swap and the rest FAT32.
Just a side note, remember to remove the existing partiton (which is the stock fat32) before starting the partitioning process,
â– Command: rm 1 (deletes partition number 1)
so how to I get the ext4 partition? same as i did the first 3? the reason I ask is because I still dont have sd-ext after i partition with recovery. I want to move dalvic cache so that my widgets will work from sd card
If it helps im using GV1.5 rom with the proper recovery 3.0.0.5 ( which as I just noticed is now the new recovery rom manager wants you to flash...got tired of having to adb 3.0.0.5 everytime I wanted to test CM7 or GV1.5)
thanks
i just tried running the following in adb after card was wiped:
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 31712 that worked
mkpartfs primary ext2 31712 32736 and then got error saying:
The location 32736 is outside of the device /dev/block/mmcblk1
so i think the problem is my card is actually 29.9GB and since my math is crap I cant figure what esactly to put...
Just move your ext partiton a little lower, the same thing happened to me when I tried to partition at first, had to play with the numbers a little. You don't have to get the total card capacity filled with a card that big what's a few mb's.
Sent from my HTC Vision
maybe I should of asked this first.
My reasoning for doing this is I read somewhere that if you can upgrade to ext4 you would be able to run widgets off sd card because the phone thinks it's stll on the actual internal storage,
am I wrong?
There's only one rom that supports apps2ext , which is what your looking to do and that is Enoms rom, but there is also Darktremor's apps2sd mod in the dev section which will enable this on all roms, in either case you need a card partitioned to at least FAT/EXT2.
Sent from my HTC Vision
got it. after darktremors script while in shell i ran ap2sd cachesd and wa la.
thanks again
Ive installed this rom twice and on the 1st or 2nd (im not sure ) i get a black screen. Does anybody know how to fix it ?

Please mention the steps u followed while installing the ROM in details?
Do u have a 512+ MB ext4 partition on ur SD card? If you have, then check whether properly partitioned ur SD card thru 4EXT recovery or something.
Ermm I was on another 3.5 sense rom so i decided to flash a different one but my ext partition was too small. i then used partition magic to format and then create a 1gb ext4 partition i then wiped everything and flashed the rom and all i got was a black screen. I wiped the sd card again and formatted it again and put the old rom back on and it didnt boot it just force closed everything so I formatted the card AGAIN and then tried the old rom and it worked. I dont know what im doing wrong ?
Partition your SD card for 1GB ext4 using GPartedLive or 4Ext recovery. You can even check the alignment and health of Fat32 and ext partitions through 4Ext.
Do a clean wipe before you install this.
Stock hboot or CM7/r2?
I have a new Kingmax microsd, 16 gb, class 10. After receiving it I did an error search and found none. I then installed Sandvold's ICS v0.5.0.1 from his thread and after a while every app crashed and the phone reboots and never returns to normal meaning it continually boots (not a bootloop, it just keeps loading forever not finding the sd card). When I go into recovery (4ext recovery touch) it tells me it can't mount the sd card and then the recovery boots without the sd. When I take out the sd card and put it in my laptop I see that the whole sd card has lost all partitions ( the first one FAT32 of 13 gb, the second one ext4 of 1gb and the swap of 256) and has becomed unallocated. This has happened 3 times (twice after installing the above mentioned ROM and one time without any ROM installed- just rebooted recovery after formatting the sd according to how I said before). I would like to know if the problem is with the sd card or my phones hardware. Thank you for helping me.

Use Minitool partition wizard. There's a partition recovery function. Or format into fat32 via computer, then boot into recovery and allocate your SD.
Good luck!

minitool doesnt partition ur sdcard very good. best way is to partition with 4ext recovery or gparted
Sent from my HTC Desire
I partitioned my card with 4ext recovery (before that I also tried doing it with minitool but didn't work that well). The problem, as i see it, is that at some point for some unknown reason to me, all partitions vanish, so android no longer sees my sd card, everything crashes and the phone reboots and loads forever (because it no longer senses my sd). When I enter recovery afterwards, the recovery says it can't mount the SD card. When I insert it in my PC I notice that all partitions are gone and all the space on it is unallocated. Maybe now I have explained things a little better. What is it that wipes everything like that living the sd with unallocated space?

Any ideas?
i really dont know but if it were me i would try partitioning my sdcard (with 4ext) to ALL fat32 (no ext4 or swap) and see if recovery recognises it.

I'll try and then get back here.
i was just having a read at some post on sandvolds ics thread and it seems to be full of issuses. (not surprised) lol. if i were u id just try a different rom, something simple like MildWild Oxygen with a 1gb (1024) ext4 partition with NO swap and see how u get on with that, then ul have a better idea what the problem is

Now I'm on sebastian's sense 3.5 gb. And nothing happened so far. I just hope it's not the sd card.

I'm on Sandvold's ICS v0.14 since yesterday (about 30 hours). Nothing happened so far. I've installed about 30 apps too and tried to stress the SD as much as I could. So basically I'm still waiting.

I'm at about 48 h since my last install and things are ok. Just a minor indigestion last night but nothing serious and completely unrelated to this thread.

It happened again. This time 7 days after the last install... I'm beginning to think the sd is broken.
Hi.
Ever since ive rooted my desire ive been using clockworkmod recovery and I'm kind of getting bored of it. Don't get me wrong, its stable and Its never given me any problems, but i change want some change lol.
Does anyone have any recommendations for recoveries? I'm thinking of switching to either cwm touch, 4ext, or twrp.
Also when I switch, do I need to somehow delete my current recovery, or is it OK to just flash it through fastboot without deleting the old one?
Thanks

4ext recovery is highly regarded around here, it's good for partitioning sd card properly among other things. see my sig, you can install it through the 4ext app.
to change recoveries you need s-off. when you change, it automatically overwrite the previous one. i think it's only possible to have only one recovery at a time (you only need one working one!)
4ext all the way. Best for Desire.

4Ext
I've recently switched from Clockworkmod to 4Ext and have found it quite good.
4Ext has tons of options and can be themed, the only problem I've had with it is the occasional issue where when you boot into recovery it comes up as read-only on /system.
This issue is easily resolved by deleting the 4Ext folder off your SD-Card and rebooting into recovery.
Apart from that - it's rock solid and much nicer to use than Clockworkmod....
thanks guys,
i just flashed it and its pretty cool.
I noticed that when i went to info it showed my ext partition as ext2, when i am sure that i partitioned it as ext4(using gparted)
Anyone else have this problem?

that's strange, not seen that before. you can backup your sd card to PC, then repartition from scratch as ext4. i've converted ext3 to ext4 before using 4EXT, don't think it can do ext2 to ext4?
you can't restore a backup to a different file type afaik. in other words, if you have apps on ext2 at the moment, don't think they'll be happy if they're restored to ext4.
if you're flashing a brand new rom, not really a problem, you'll need to full wipe anyway, so you'll have a fresh new ext4 partition to fill.

yeah its weird. I think i'll just leave it for now as it doesnt seem to be causing any issues.
Also i got this message on the second boot into recovery saying that i changed by hboot (even though i didnt) and that i should wipe my system partition. I decided not to, and my rom booted properly, so is that message normal?
One more thing, when i boot into recovery it takes about 15 seconds to prepare the boot. Is this normal too?
15 seconds isn't normal....
That sounds like the read-only /system partition message that I've got a few times..
Resolved by deleting the 4EXT folder from SD-CARD and it was fine on the next boot into recovery. (only 2 or 3 seconds)
Thanks that fixed it.
