I followed the instructions for locked boot loaders here. I know it says restore using CWM, but in CWM it doesn't have the downloaded file under the restore options. Instead I tried going to install from sd card and it was there but when I selected it I got the message "installation aborted". Why does this happen?

"installation aborted" as it is not a flashable zip
EXTRACT DOWNLOADED ZIP FILE UNDER - sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
As above, extract the files from the zip, then move the backup file into your clockwork mod folder and put it into the backup file.
You will then see it as a backup to use when you boot into cwm.

I am rooted and wanted to use unrevoked forever so I could install the Virtuous 2.7 rom. I have followed all the instructions and downloaded unrevoked forever and put the zip file on the root of my sd card. then I rebooted into recovery and went to install the zip but it doesnt show up. I checked on astro to make sure it was on the root of my sd card and it is. Any ideas why the zip wont show up?
Thanks!
It won't show if is named wrong. Make sure it isn't named .zip.zip In other words zip twice
Alright guys/gals.My question here is this.Using unvevoked3 and not updating to the new OTA update is okay? I'm still having problems with sync not syncing? Thats cause i have not updated yet. Will my phone be alright without the update even though i want it..I cant seem to update it to my evo.Either no one helps or its not in plain English for some of us that dont have the experience rooting or unrooting.
What do you all think? Anyone in the same boat as me.? They say put the file on your sdcard root file.Where in the hell is that?
**** does happen and im in deep **** without the update.
Ok this should be easy. If u are unrevoked and u are full rooted running a custom Rom then just flash the update. There should be a post with the zip that u can flash in recovery to apply the update. If not then just wait for your custom Rom to be updated to the next version with will be surely base on the latest ota. Like u said it's def.ly not a big deal.
BUT:
If u are running stock or want to remain on a stock Rom just flash the rooted 2.2 base on the new OTA, Can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789913
Edit: came across this, should help you also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790394

Ok if u have it on your SD then that's easy providing that u got clockwork mod or another custom recovery. Just boot your phone into recovery, I use quickbot. U can also use Rom manager to boot your phone into recovery and also flash a clockwork recovery . Once in recovery just go to flash update from zip, then select the zip(should be the one on your sd) confirm and then reboot. You're done.
Edit:
Putting it on the root of your sd simply means drag and drop it to the main folder on your sd card, where u see all the other files and folder. Just open up your sd card in a browser(double click removing disk from my computer) and also the folder on the computer where u have the file. Then drag and drop it on your sd card. Where u dropping the files is the root of ur sd, hope this helps.

Get to SD root - connect your EVO to your PC through USB and mount it through disk drive from the notification bar then drag your update file onto the SD card, i.e. on my windows laptop, root would be the window "Computer->Removable Disk (G: )
To flash - power off then hold vol down + power button to get into hboot and then select recovery. once there, select flash zip from sd card and select your update file. let it finish and you should be able to reboot into the updated rom.
*quick boot is an app from the market that allows you to easily reboot into recovery for rooted phones

Michael this is an invalid file name. U do not have to rename or alter any thing with the update file. The file is already a zip file so the extension is already a .zip file. Any file that is zip will always be for example 'filename.zip'. you adding a .zip to the file name will make the file unacceptable as there is no .zip.zip file. Just leave the original file you downloaded as is. Once in recovery you can then follow the same steps you mentioned. Go to choose zip from sd card,u will see the zip file on the sd,select it then confirm and install. U should be fine if u follow these steps.

Just for the record... On Windows boxen, the default options for your filemanager,
is: Hide extensions for known filetypes
Translated:
If windows shows the correct icon for the file, it knows what type of file it is, and therefore will hide it's extension - in your case; .zip
Stupid, I know (Windows).
So, when you see the file "Update", and it shows an icon indicating that windows knows it's a .ZIP file. You will know that the filename is actually:
Update.zip - not just "Update" as you see in filemanager.
Bottom line; file has the correct icon in filemanager, it's extension hidden.
File has a generic icon, then file is unknown, and probably shows it's extension.

I am not a noob, but am a noob to Android on the Epic. I've been ok on my Vibrant, but I am trying to assist a friend on installing Mobile AP or Wireless Tether on the Epic.
I have read all of the docs., but all seem to skip the point of how to install the apk. On the Vibrant, I can copy the zip files right to the internal sd, and reboot into clockwork recovery, and install from there. With the Epic, not so.
Apks are installed thru the file explore or astro.
What about .zip installs? Do I have to rename the files to update.zip for clockwork receover to see it at boot? It doesn't have browse, like the Vibrant.
clockworkmod needs to be install first before you can browse zip files
Yes, thanks, that worked for the .apk, but what about the .zip installs that are flash installed via recovery, such as MobileAP, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804.
For example, when I copied the 'mobileap' .zip installation file to the sd card, rebooting into clockwork recovery, it does not see the it. It only see's a previously used, update.zip file.

I have installed clockwork mod.
boot into clockworkmod recovery, select install zip from sd card, and then select your zip file.
Every time i try to flash a rom i get a error that says
E:Cant find update script
Using Amon Ra recovery. Wiped everything and partitioned sd card.
Thanks for any help
Sounds like the update package is not signed with valid keys. Is your phone rooted ?

check your zip. If you zip a file two folders deep it will give the same error. open your zip and see if you see your files or another folder.
yeah when i unzip it, the first folder i see is the name of the rom "fresh" then when i open it, I see; boot image file, data folder, META-INF folder, sdcard folder, and system folder.
Well update script is in META-INF\com\google\android but if your zip file is not signed then it can't be flasshed that is why you get upgrade script not found.
How do i do that????? And walk me through what "signed" means
And im using a macbook pro if that helps any
Thanks a ton
Well did unziped the zip folder ? Did you make any changes to the installation zip ?
Now what rom are you running. So you have root ? When you use connectbot and type su deo you see #? It could be that your phone is not ruter and does not have proper recovery installed since we can't sign rom with the same keys that developers at sprint use we have to root the phone and allow it to accept custom rom.
all i did was download the fresh rom from the forum onto my computer, compressed it (zipped it) then rebooted my phone into recovery, wiped everything i needed to, enabled the usb, moved the zip over to the phone, disabled the usb and then went to flash zip, found the zipped fresh rom and tried to flash it.
Im running my stock rom that came with the phone.
If you running this on mac the os x will unzip ypur file and put the download file in trash so use zip file from trash. Now You need to use simple root to root and install proper recovery on your phone then you will be able to install custom rom .
Awesome! found the zip file in the trash like you said, transfered that over and it worked! thank you thank you thank you!
I wanted to update to the latest version of xiaomi.eu, which is no longer for fastboot, but for recovery. At first internal storage had (0mb), I changed it to EXT4, but still the problem is no visibility/ability to install the latest ROM copied to the phone, what to do?
I download the rom with the phone, reboot with TWRP-3.6.2, install, zip archive anb install, after select system an reboot
I cant do antything in TWRP because TWRP doesnt see ROM copied on storage.. All tutorials say "just go into twrp and install the copied rom", I don't see the copied ROM!
You have to look in a sub folder it will no show at root directory can't remember off hand might be data or meta something like that, after the OTA updater works great
Useing the Skkk latest TWRP by default it was in Chinese
