[HOW TO] Enable On Screen Menu Button for ICS/JB apps - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

EDIT: This janky hack disables haptic feedback on the menu/back buttons and changes the long press of the home button to go to the dialer instead of recent apps.
Due to the size of the GN2 the menu button is really hard to hit when using the phone with one hand. This mod will bring back the "three dot" menu buttons that appear in top right (and sometimes bottom right) corners of ICS/JB apps. There might be a better solution to this but this works perfectly fine for me. Your actual menu button will still work with this mod too.
1. Add this line to your build.prop (this will add onscreen buttons like the Galaxy Nexus):
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
2. Follow this guide to change the size of the navigation bar to 0 so the nav bar disappears but the menu button still stays. Just edit these 3 lines to value of 0 when you get to that step. Note, you do not need to do anything with SystemUI.apk, only follow the guide that deals with the framework-res.apk.

Wouldn't that make apps not run full screen anymore? I know it did on the EVO LTE.

Couldn't tell you. I reverted once I found out that the long press of the home button goes to the voice dialer instead of recent apps. I suppose I'll just have to wait until CM10 to have the menu overflow button.

Hi there,
Thanks for your tip!
However I would like it to work the other way round, ie. To keep the navigation bar (soft keys) at bottom, BUT remove the annoying 3 dot or menu bar in some app eg. dialer.
Possible to do that? Thanks!

Help! BACK hardware button suddenly opens volume setting screen?

Hi,
How I have done this I don't know, but suddenly the back hardware button (2nd to the right) brings up the volume adjust screen instead of returning to the previous screen?

It is the same screen as when pressing the VOLUME UP/VOLUME DOWN button.
Regarding registry tweaks etc I have only installed Diamond Tweak and the Itouch sensitivity tweak, for the rest all official software but I can't find any relevant settings that could have caused this.
It's not really a problem, but pretty annoying as I was used to using the back button and now everytime this screen pops up.
Anyone knows how I can restore the original functionality of this button?
Thanks!
Doesn't look like the standard volume control app to me. Have you installed some other volume control application that may have a hardware key assigned to it?
Hi and thanks for your reply. I installed the following apps and software but I can't imagine which one has caused this:
- TP2 TF3D Neon Tabs - V1.1 > removed again properly
- MusicID
- Skype
- Emoze Pro
- Diamond Tweak
- MP3Trimmer
- ITouch sensitivity tweak
- S2U2
- Total Commander
- Sprite backup
- Fabliv Action Screen
- No bottom curtain (transparent T3FD icons)
- No top curtain (transparent provider bar)
- Custom top bar icons
- Spike's ~ 6.1 MicNeo TaskBar Varient
I installed all cabs and did not use any manual regedit...
Hi,
I had the same after installing S2U2. If you disable in S2U2 sttings the Volume Control option the hardware back button is working like it has been in the beginning. By the way the volume keys will work in standby so this option is not neede for the Rhodium.
Kind regards
I dont have a pro 2, but it is possible that the button got reassigned for some reason, if open the start menu, go to settings, then all settings, go to the personal tab, and then click buttons and you can reassign what all the buttons do, and you can select the back button and then choose what command you want it to do, and that should allow you to fix it.
BTW- the steps might not be 100% accurate because I typed this based off of memory and didn't actually go through the steps to double check but I think it should work, if you get to the button settings screen though you should be able to reassign what all the buttons do
hope that helps
I dont think thats gonna work because you cant reassign the back button.. Ive also installed s2u2 and have also volume control when i press the back button.. When i disable volume control it works again..

[Q] Any other GNex ROMs with BIG MENU BUTTON?

Okay so I'm sure this probably isn't important to that many people but one of the things I really hated about ICS is the disappearance of the menu button. I don't like the way Google changed things by adding another dotdotdot menu button inside apps, because a lot of times that menu button is at the top of the screen.
This is a problem because this phone is HUEG. Trying to reach that menu button with one hand makes me afraid I'm going to drop my device.
Anyway for most of my time on the GNex I've used Apex ROM, which has had the option to bring back the big menu button which is always visible and fits in line with the rest of the buttons, like so:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Big menu button, right in front of the back button. While the placement is not the best in the world (I'd prefer the back-menu-home-taskswitcher arrangement personally) at least it has the big button. Most other ROMs seem to only have the ability to enable the legacy app dotdotdot menu button permanently.
Now, Apex has been updated and the big menu button is gone, instead replaced with the option to permanently enable the dotdotdot menu button that ICS uses for legacy apps. I don't like this, because it's off-center, looks bad and is more annoying to press.
I'm not particularly keen on sticking with an old version of a ROM if I can avoid it.
My question is this: is there another, or more than one, GNex ROM that lets me have a big menu button as well as keeping my must-have features (longpress volume keys to skip music tracks, multiple lockscreen shortcuts, notification power widget and all that jazz)?
As much as I like Apex (and the dev will be looking into re-adding the big menu button) I'd also like to check out other potential ROMs as well if they also have the big menu button.
I'm rocking foxhound Black Ed 0.6.. uses apex which I prefer and looks like this:

I'm using SlimICS and although the menu button isn't deault, you can set it up how you described, and I'd imagine several of the other ROMS such as AOKP have the ability.
In Slim all you need to do is go to the Advanced Slim Settings and make changes to how many/which keys you want in the "Navigation bar" section, and then change "Menu visibility" to "Always show invisible icons". Now you have the menu button as a regular key, but the three dots don't show.
Strongly agree with your complaint. Came from a gingerbread device here. Had my nexus only a week but gone thru several roms... try liquid smooth. You can customize the hell outta the buttons.
Or try straight AOKP. So many settings, this is one of the basic, easy to change ones.

2. Scroll to Customization
3. Select Hybrid Properties
4. Select Interface
5. In workspace slide Nav. bar to "0%"
6. Click Apply
7. Exit to home screen
8. Press and drag finger up
WoW! I think I actually might like this!
FYI: AOKP MR3 just released a way to hide the nav bar and a quick swipe up enables the nave bar to reappear. Just like WebOS!
My problem with PIE is when I have it set to either right side or bottom (easiest to access) it cuts off half of my backspace button on my keyboard as it is reserved for swiping in and PIEing from the right or its hard to click my space bar or punctuation marks if I have it set to the bottom.
Is there anyway to avoid this? Like preferably have it set to force swiping from the bezel, rather than allowing a majority of the finger to be on the screen when swiping up. I've messed with all of the launch setting sizes to no avail.
I have the same problem with my keyboard when pie is set to the bottom. I do not know of any fix. In a few days or so there will be a new release of PA with some impressive fixes that they have done. Take a look at they're (PA) Google+ page.

What about on the right as well? I'm actually running Xenon HD on a recommendation (there's soooo many roms idk what to do with myself) so I'm not sure if the updates will run through to xenon right away :/ might have to try paranoid android then haha

It happens to me when set on normal also.

[Q]I hid the notification bar and nav buttons somehow, and don't know how to undo it.

This is probably a really dumb question. I seem to have accidentally enabled a setting which makes the status bar and navigation buttons and the top and button hidden unless I drag them in from the top or bottom. I want them to always be shown, which is how it has been since I got the phone.
It was fine until earlier today when I was doing something else (tapping pretty fast) and I think I double tapped home, which brings up settings and I changes some setting. I thought it would be easy to find what setting I accidentally changed but I can't seem to find it.
I'm not even sure if its a setting in the rom, launcher, or something else.
I'm using viperone rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/rom-viperonem9-1-0-0-tweaks-hub-t3072773

I don't see that option anywhere under 'change navigation buttons' (it was the first place I looked). Here's a screenshot. Is this the place I should expect to find it?

Note the annoying empty space at the bottom where the nav buttons would be, expect they are pointlessly hidden.
Maybe you activated the fullscreen mode? Press and hold the power button and disable it. If you changed the power menu items in venom tweaks you need to check immersive mode under tweaks>misc>power menu items to make that option visable, again.

That fullscreen mode setting in the power menu was the problem, thanks. I never though too look at the power menu settings. Apparently there's nothing in any other settings menu about this mode, or at least I didn't see it.

For future reference you can also hide the status bar and the navbar in venom tweaks. There are a ton of changes you can make in that app so be careful so you can undo anything you do not like.

Themes / Apps / Mods Get the best multitasking/tablet experience

G'day everyone, just wanted to share a way to get awesome multitasking to get a nicer experience as a "tablet".
There's an app in the Galaxy store called GoodLock.
In the app is a heap of outstanding customisation tools you'll love. One particular one is called NavStar. It replaces the taskbar at the bottom on your screen with a "Task Stack". It's essentially a long list of all your currently running apps and interaction works the same way as the default taskbar... drag and drop an app from the Task Stack to the screen.
Instead of having only 8 apps in the default taskbar, the NavStar Task Stack shows all running apps, much like a desktop computer, for a much better multitasking experience.
On the inside screen, the task stack is shown next to the nav buttons. It disappears on the cover screen and only shows the nav buttons. Then checkout the GoodLock app called HomeUp... you can customise the entire multitasking interface (I have recent apps shown in a grid).
The only downsides are you can't use nav gestures with the task stack, and there's a bug the dev needs to sort out where when you rotate the screen, the stack disappears and you have to swipe the notification centre down to show the stack again. If youre using the cover screen then unfold it, it also disappears. I have a fix for it further below.
Now there are 2 tweaks for the task stack I've sorted out. One unfortunately requires root.
The first one is to get a tablet UI. It requires rooting and installing the Magisk module MagiskHide Props Config. Using this module, you need to change the build prop "ro.build.characteristics" value from "phone" to "tablet.
This gives you the date in the statusbar, a nicer/different notification centre and probably a couple over things I haven't noticed yet.
When done, it also gives you the task stack on the cover screen... that's the biggest reason I'd say to do this mod if you root.
If you set the nav buttons on the left hand side of the screen, you will get all 3 buttons and a couple apps in the stack on the cover screen. If you set the buttons on the right, the cover screen stack will show a lot more apps but the only nav button that will show is the back button on right hand side.
To get around this (if you want your buttons on the right), I have an app called Gesture Control. This way, I can have my nav buttons on the right which then allows me to use the back button on the cover screen to go back and use swipe up gesture to go home and swipe up and hold to access recents.
I also have a macrodroid task set up to disable the gestures on the inside screen (I don't need gestures as I have the 3 buttons) and enable the gestures on the cover screen.
The second tweak is using macrodroid/tasker to fix the task stack disappearing.
I have tasks set up so when the screen is rotated or the device is unfolded, a gesture pulls the notification centre down about 100 pixels then immediately back up in 50 microseconds... this shows the stack again and the status bar has a tiny little flicker you barely notice.
It's unfortunate that this bug exists and hopefully its fixed soon because it is an awesome desktop-like experience.

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
As an add-on to the above - in order to be able to display the Task Stack in NavStar you first need to go into the phone's Settings - Display and disable "Taskbar" there.
Otherwise the "Show Task Stack" option will be greyed out in NavStar.
